    Simple Sunday Skirt Pattern

    Supplies:

    Fabric

    Scissors

    Fabric pen

    Straight edge

    Iron

    Pins

Elastic (3/8 or 1/2 inch width)

Suggested fabrics: 100% cottons, cotton linen blends, and linen.

    Tips:

Pre wash your fabric. This will allow for any shrinkage.

This skirt patterns works best for adult women when you make it to fit snuggly over

the hips. This means use the actual number that you measure around your hips.

Fabrics tends to stretch as we wear them, so it will loosen a bit. Little girls and

children may prefer a loser more flowing skirt, so add on 1 3 inches on the width

This skirt is slightly A lined. If you prefer a more straight pencil skirt look cut thewidth on the bottom of the skirt to match your waist (skip the step of adding the 1.5

inches to the width on the bottom of the pattern).

I will refer to your personally calculated hip measurement as X during the

instructions as this will vary from person to person.

    Elastic Waist Skirt Instructions:

    Step 1: Calculate Your X

Measure around the widest part of your hips. (Measure the entire circle of your hips.)

Divide this number by 4. Add 5/8 inch to this number. (This number will be called X from

    this point on.)

Step 2: Make Your Paper Pattern

Along the top edge of your paper measure in the X inches. Mark this (point A) with your

pen. Measure 18 inches down the edge. Mark this point.

Measure in X plus 1.5 inches and mark this (point B) with your pen.

Use a straight edge to create a line from point A to point B.

Cut out your pattern piece. This pattern piece will be referring to as Skirt Body Pattern Piecefrom this point on.

Step 3: Cut out Your Fabric

Line the straight edge of your Skirt Body Pattern Piece along the fold of your fabric. Pin in

place and cut out. You will need 2 of these to create the front and back of the skirt.

Step 4: Create the fold lines of the Hem

This is optional but recommended. Fold the bottom edge of one of the skirt panels over 5/8

    inch. Iron flat.

Fold again 5/8 inches and iron flat. Open the folds back up. Repeat on the other bottom edge

of the 2nd Skirt Body fabric piece. This will make nice fold lines for when you hem your skirt

    at the end.

    Set these pieces aside.

    Step 5: Create your Waistband

Cut out 2 strips of fabric.

Strip #1 should be 3.5 inches tall and X + 5/8 inches wide.

    Strip # 2 should be 3.5 inches tall and X + 1 inches wide.(This X is your personal # you calculated above. )

    4/13

Cut each strip on the fold, just as you did the skirt panels.

Place your waistband pieces pattern side together. Sew one 3.5 inch end together.

Iron this seam down flat from the backside.

Lay your waist band pattern side down on your work surface. Take the top edge of the

waistband and fold it over 5/8 inch and iron flat.

    5/13

Take the left end of the waist band fabric and fold it over 5/8 inch and iron flat. Repeat on

    the right end. Set aside.

Step 6: Sew your skirt body fabric panels together.

You want to take your two Skirt Body fabric pieces and place them pattern sides together.Pin along the left and right seams. Sew along the left seams starting at the top and working

to the bottom. Repeat this step on the right side sewing along the hem.

Finish each edge with a zigzag stitch or French stitch to prevent fraying when you wash the

skirt. Basically this means sew along the very edge of the fabric with a zigzag seam or

French stitch setting on your machine. (You may also surge this if you have this option on

    your machine.)

Turn the skirt body inside out.

Step 7: Attach the waistband to the skirt body.

Line the seam you sewed in the middle of the waistband fabric with one of the side seams on

the skirt. (It does not matter which side seam you choose). Pattern sides together.

Pin the bottom (non-folded edge) to the top edge of the skirt. Pattern sides together. Pin your

waist band into place. Overlap the slightly longer folded end of the waist band on top of the

    other folded end..

Sew around this top seam using a 5/8 inch seam allowance.

Fold the waistband up and iron this flat.

Fold the waistband piece over in half wrong sides together.

Line your ironed/ folded edge up with the seam you sewed at the top of the skirt. Pin in place

working your way around the skirt.

    7/13

Sew along this edge inch from the fold. (You can also sew this along the outside of the

skirt as seen in the photo. Follow the line you sewed bewteen the waist band and the skirt.

This will yield the best results.)

    Step 8: Add the elastic.

Thread your elastic through the waistband tunnel. (I like to attach a safely pinto one end of

the elastic and thread it through this way. It gives you something to hold onto.)

Be sure to pin the other end of elastic to the end of the waistband tunnel so you do not pull it

    through the opening.

  • 8/3/2019 Simple Sunday Skirt Pattern

    8/13

Tie the two ends of the elastic together. Slip the skirt on and tighten the elastic as

needed. Pin in the correct length for your waist. Sew the two ends together using a zig zag

    stitch.

Slip the elastic into the waistband to hide it.

Place the lzig zag line you stitched on the elastic in the spot where the two folds of the waist

    band overlap slightly.

    Pin flat.

Sew a straight line along the folded edge vertically. Be sure to catch the zig zag sewn o nthe

elastic. This is just a double measure to insure the elastic is very secure.

    Step 9: Hem Your Skirt

Fold the bottom edge up 5/8 inch and iron flat. Fold again and iron flat again.

Sew around the hem. (It looks visually to start on one of the side seams when it runs into thehem of the skirt.)

Drawstring Skirt Instructions**These instructions are identical to the elastic skirt version. They vary on the placement of

the waist band and making the drawstring. Please refer to above photos as needed. Photos added in this section of the instructions are

for the waist band and drawstring.

    Step 1: Calculate Your X

Measure around the widest part of your hips. (The full circle of your hips.) Divide this

number by 4. Add 5/8 inch to this number. (This number will be called X from this point on.)

Step 2: Make your paper pattern.

  • 8/3/2019 Simple Sunday Skirt Pattern

    10/13

Along the edge of your paper measure in the X inches. Mark this (point A) with your pen.

Measure 18 inches down the edge. Mark this point.

Measure in X plus 1.5 inches and mark this (point B) with your pen.

Use a straight edge to create a line from point A to point B.

Cut out your pattern piece. This pattern piece will be referring to as Skirt Body Pattern Piece

    from this point on.

Open then back up. Repeat on the other

Skirt Body fabric piece. This will make nice fold lines for when you hem your skirt at the

    end.

    Set these pieces aside.

    Step 5: Create your Waistband

Cut out 2 strips of fabric. These need to be 3 inches tall and X inches wide. This X is your

    personal # you calculated above.

Place your waistband pieces pattern side together. Sew one end together.

Iron this seam down flat from the backside. Take the top edge of the waste band and fold it

over 5/8 inch and iron flat.

Take the left end of the waist band fabric and fold it over 5/8 inch and iron flat. Repeat on

    the right end. Set aside.

Step 6: Sew your Skirt Panels Together

You want to take your two Skirt Body fabric pieces and place them pattern sides together.

Pin along the left and right seams. Sew along the these seams.

Finish each edge with a zigzag stitch to prevent fraying when you wash the skirt. .

    11/13

Turn the skirt body inside out.

Step 7: Attach the Waistband to the Skirt Body

Lay out your skirt body piece. Decide which is the back of the skirt. It is identical, so you

have to choose one side to be the back.

Mark the middle of the skirt directly in the middle of the 2 side seams. I like to do this with

    a straight pin.

Line the seam you sewed in the middle of the waistband fabric to the middle point on the

    back piece of the skirt.

Pin the non-folded edge to the top edge of the skirt. Pattern sides together. Pin your waist

band into place. The two folded ends of the waistband should meet up to each other directly

in the middle front of the skirt.

Sew around this top seam using a 5/8-inch seam allowance.

Fold the waistband piece over in half. Line your ironed and folded edge up with the seam at

    the top of the skirt.

Sew along this edge inch from the fold. (You can sew 1/4 inch above the seam line if you

are sewing from the outside of the skirt - as seen in the photos from the elastic waist skirt.

This gives the best visual appeal.

    Step 8: Make the Drawstring

  • 8/3/2019 Simple Sunday Skirt Pattern

    12/13

Cut out a strip of fabric 2 inches tall and X + 14 inches long.

Fold each end 5/8 inch and iron flat.

Fold this strip of fabric in half lengthwise and iron flat.

Fold the top edge down to the meet the center fold you just created. Iron flat.

Fold the bottom edge up to meet the center fold. Iron flat.

Fold the whole piece in held lengthwise.

Start at one end and sew along the open length of the fabric just inside the edge. until you

    reach the other end.

    Step 9: Insert the Drawstring

Thread your fabric drawstring through the waist band tunnel. (I like to attach a safety pin toone end of the elastic and thread it through this way. It gives you something to hold onto.)

Pull the 2 ends of the drawstring out the opening on the front until they are even.

    13/13

    Step 11: Hem your skirt

Fold the bottom edge up 5/8 inch and iron flat. Fold again and iron flat again.

Sew around the hem. Start on one of the sides where the hem meets the vertical seam.
