Cutting OutCut the fabric according to the measurements below.Cotton lining & inside pocket1. Back: cut one 24cm x 24cm wide (9 1/2” x 9 1/2”)2. Front: cut one 18cm x 24cm wide (7” x 9 1/2”)3. Pocket: cut one 20cm x 24cm wide (8” x 9 1/2”)

Preparing the embroidered panel

1. Place the embroidery with the right side down onto a soft, padded surface and press the linen around the embroidery.

2. Measuring from the centre lines, measure the embroidered piece to 18cm x 24cm wide (7” x 9 1/2”).

Trim along the marked lines (diag 1).

ConstructionAll seam allowances are 1cm (5/8”) unless otherwise specified. The coloured areas on the following diagrams indicate the right side of the fabric.

Making the liningPreparing and attaching the inside pocket

1. Fold the pocket piece in half across the width with wrong sides together and matching raw edges and press.

2. Measure 8cm (3 1/4”) in from each side edge and rule a line down the pocket piece.

3. Place the pocket piece over the small lining piece, matching the raw lower edges.

Pin in place.

Stitch along each marked line to create three pockets (diag 2).

Making the lining

1. Place the lining pieces with right sides together and matching lower edges, sandwiching the pocket between.

Pin and stitch across the lower edge (diag 3).

2. Re-fold the lining with right sides together and matching upper and side edges. Pin and stitch down each side (diag 4).

Press the side seams open and the press the foldline that now marks the centre base.

3. Open out a corner with right sides together and matching the side seam and base foldline.

4. Measure 3cm (1 1/4”) from the corner point.

At this point, stitch across the corner (diag 5).

NOTE – adjust the measurement if necessary so that the stitchline falls on top of the previous base seam.

Repeat for the opposite corner.

5. Press the corner triangle seams towards the base.

6. Fold the seam allowances around the upper edge of the lining to the wrong side and press.

Attaching the base (optional)I like to have a firm base in my pouch so that it can stand up. If you prefer a soft base, omit this step.

1. Round off the corners of template plastic.

2. Using a large needle or awl, pierce two holes, 5mm (1/4”) from the edge and 5mm (1/4”) apart at the end of the plastic base piece (diag 6).

3. Centre the piece of template plastic over the lining base. Hand stitch in place, though the prepared holes and stitching into the triangle seam only (diag 7).

You will need* 24cm x 24cm wide (9 1/2” x 9 1/2”) piece of print cotton (back)* 25cm x 75cm wide (10” x 30”) piece of ivory homespun (lining)* 5cm x 15cm wide (2” x 16”) piece of template plastic (base – optional)* Matching sewing thread

Constructing the pouchAttaching the zip

1. Position the back piece over the zip, with the right side against the right side of the zip and matching the raw edge with the edge of the cotton tape and pin in place (diag 8).

2. Leaving the tape at each end of the zip free, stitch the zip in place as close as possible to the teeth of the zip (diag 9).

Repeat for the embroidered front.

3. Fold the front and back with right sides together and matching the lower edges. Pin and stitch across the lower edge. Press the seam open.

4. Re-fold the front and back, matching top and side edges. Pin and stitch down each side as you did for the lining.

Press the seams open and the press the foldline across the print cotton that now marks the centre base, the same way you did for the lining.

5. Open out the corner with right sides together and matching the side seams and base foldline.

Measure 3cm (1 1/4”) from the corner point and adjust if necessary.

6. Stitch across the corner in the same was as you did for the lining (see diag 5).

Press the corner triangle seam towards the base.

Attaching the lining and finishing pouch

1. Position the base of the lining and pouch with wrong sides together and sandwiching the plastic between.

NOTE – if you mirror the pieces so that the base seams are on opposite sides you will avoid bulk along one side of the base.

Hand stitch each corner of the pouch to the corners of the lining with short shank (diag 10).

2. Fold the lining to the right side, slipping it over the pouch (diag 11).

3. Fold the ends of the zipper tape inside the lining and pin the upper folded edges of the lining in place (diag 12).

Hand stitch the lining in place.

4. Fold the pouch the right side and press, taking care not to press the embroidery as the heat of the iron will easily damage the wool embroidery.
