Problem Identification - Brainstorming

The problems identified using the Brainstorming technique were: 1.Unnecessary use of plastic bags 2.Paper wastage 3.Heavy bags 4. Global Warming

Page 5: Sin eng-33 - greenathon

•Greenhouse gas emissions, temperature and sea levels are all rising. •The biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions is from energy generation and use •Making changes at home can help change our future.

•Energy efficiency is the easiest way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at home and workplace.

We understood this and felt we could make a change thus Project Save Energy was concieved.

Page 6: Sin eng-33 - greenathon

1. Save our natural resources 2. Energy Conservation 3. Cost reduction - cheaper energy bills 4. To save environment- Less Greenhouse Gas Emissions

5. In every walk of life there are opportunities to save energy - WE FELT WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY

6. TOPIC is relevant to our Core Values- Team work and Attitude and our school policy of helping environment

7. Gain knowledge

8. Solutions are within our reach to implement.

9. It is improvement through awareness without any cost and everything to gain but nothing to loose.

Why Project Save Energy??

Page 7: Sin eng-33 - greenathon

The problem we decided to work on was

CREATE AWARENESS ON SAVING ENERGY to reduce GLOBAL WARMING as 80% of the students voted for it.

SAVE OUR EARTH from GLOBAL WARMING

What is electricity? How it is produced?

Electricity is the most versatile energy source that we have; it is also one of the newest. Homes and businesses have been using it since about a hundred years.

It is produced from natural resources like:

water gas

coal

KNOWLEDGE SHARING SESSIONS

IGNORANCE TO AWARENESS:

Page 15: Sin eng-33 - greenathon

1. Energy isn‟t free we pay for it. So wasting energy is the same as wasting money

2. To reduce heat production to help to reduce in global warming in a small way

3. We should conserve energy because if we use up all of our NON-renewable resources, when we won't have anything to resort to.

IGNORANCE TO AWARENESS

Why should we save energy?

KNOWLEDGE SHARING SESSIONS

Page 16: Sin eng-33 - greenathon

1. Recycled tin can would save

enough energy to power a

television for 3 hours.

2. Recycled glass bottle would

save enough energy to power

a computer for 25 minutes.

3. Recycled plastic bottle would

save enough energy to power

a 60-watt light bulb for 3

hours.

How is Recycling an excellent way of saving energy and conserving the environment?

1. Why should we use fluorescent bulbs?

Compact fluorescent bulbs use 1/4th the energy of regular bulbs, they last 10 times longer, are more cost effective.

WE ALL AT GIIS(EC) NOW KNOW:

ENERGY IS AN EASY WORD,

IT MAKES OUR LIFE EASY,

BUT IT WILL REMOVE ALL EASINESS IN LIFE IF IT IS EXHAUSTED

WE HAVE UNDERSTOOD THIS GRAVE PROBLEM WHICH WILL MOUNT IN COMING YEARS

WE ALL AT GIIS(EC) SAY „SAVE ENERGY‟

WE ARE AWAKENED, WE WILL NOT REST

TILL WE SHOW THE „LIGHT TO BRIGHT‟

AWARENESS TO AWAKENING

Page 19: Sin eng-33 - greenathon

1.We started observing places where power was being wasted to help us make effective plans 2.This observation made us realize the extent of power wastage and We became more determined to create awareness to reduce global warming and save our earth

Page 20: Sin eng-33 - greenathon

1. Reminders to turn off electrical equipments such as - copy machines and printers, Air cons, fans, lights when it's not being used.

2. Use of Compact fluorescent bulbs in school. 3. Observe „Earth Hour‟ in school. 4. Encouraging students to follow power saving tips

at home and compare bills to check savings and energy consumption.

5. Charts showing TIPS on energy conservation.

6. Creating awareness for the whole school in the assembly

( teachers, students and staff )

Page 21: Sin eng-33 - greenathon

7. Appointing „Energy Monitors‟ in each class for regular checking. Conduct energy patrol to monitor the same.

8. Educating people about the efficient use of power.

9. Create S.E.E.K club ( School Energy Environment Kids‟ Club).

10. Celebrate „energy week‟

11. SMS/ E-mail on efficient use of energy to be sent to parents.

12. Spreading awareness among communities via home visits.

AWAKENING TO COMMITTMENT

Page 32: Sin eng-33 - greenathon

Dear Parents,

Saving energy and the overall environment is a topic that has gained public attention more

recently. People are realizing that at the rate we are using earth's valuable resources, we will

face serious shortage in a near future.

With the economic situation in today’s society, many people are looking for more ways to save money.

One good act everyday will help the mother Earth to give us many more beautiful days for our future

generations to come. Let's all help mother Earth and help ourselves now and for the generations to

come – Love Our Planet EARTH.

To save the planet Earth, We – the staff, teachers & students of GIIS, East Coast Campus have planned to make one commitment each day, during the ‘Energy Week’ (20th July to 27th July).

Our resolution for DAY 3: 22nd July,11 is

Reduce waste. Use E-banking, e-ticketing to save paper, Use Washing machine or dishwasher, when

only full.

Students are doing different activities in each class to create awareness on ENERGY CONSERVATION

Grade 3: Students in this class are involved in group activities on "Saving Electricity"

Grade 4: Students are designing Posters on " Save environment"

Grade 5; Students will write essay on " A Day without Electricity"

We hope you will adopt these resolutions at home too and practice round the year in all possible

ways to save Environment and the Earth.

Warm regards,

Madhu Khanna

AWAKENING TO COMMITTMENT

Page 34: Sin eng-33 - greenathon

Survey Questions: 1.Are you aware of the present day electricity crisis in the world? 2.Are you ready to go out of the way to save electricity? 3.Do you have Compact fluorescent bulbs at home? 4.Do you switch off all electrical appliances when no one is at home? 5.Do you try to create awareness among society for saving electricity? 6.Did you observe Earth hour 2011?

50 neighborhood families interviewed by „Ignited Minds‟ team members

Q4. Most positive Q5. Least positive

We can conclude that even though people are trying to save electricity at home, they are not trying to create awareness in society

AWAKENING TO COMMITTMENT

Page 35: Sin eng-33 - greenathon

Impact: 1. This Project has wide application so all stakeholders welcomed the project

and helped implementation – even at homes, neighborhood and friends

2. We created awareness among our 1200 schoolmates and their

parents(approx 2000), 80 teachers , staff , sub-staff, 50 neighborhood homes,

40 community members and school children from Bedok Green Primary

School who took part in the ‘Greenathon’ on our sports day.

3. Most importantly we are all much conscious and aware regarding

environment and saving energy
