First President Day

The First President Day is important for Kazakhstan and is celebrated every year. The first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, is prided for his policies for the people and the country of Kazakhstan. On December 1, 1991 the first

national presidential election was held in Kazakhstan. Nazarbayev won having received 98.78% of votes. Since then, December 1st has become a truly significant day for every citizen of Kazakhstan and since 2012 the country has celebrated this anniversary as the

Day of the President. In many counties of the world the first leaders and founding fathers

play a crucial role in the development of a country, in uniting a nation and positioning it on the international arena as a responsible member of the global community.

Kazakhstan Celebrates Independence Day Our independence is the

result of the sacrifice made by our ancestors. It is the merit of our grandfathers who defended this immense land. It required strength, valour and determination to rise up the flag of independence. Therefore, it is one of the nation’s most important and brightest holidays.

In the days leading up to December 16, large festivities, concerts, exhibitions and compe-titions were held to cele brate the anniversary of Kazak hstan gaining independence in December 1991.

Kazakhstan has worked hard to cultivate its abundant natural resources, build a new capital, become a world leader in the anti-nuclear weapon movement and it regularly unites the world’s religious leaders.

“On this day, we implemented a great mission-we began our in-dependence,” said President Nur sultan Nazarbayev. We con-gra tulate Kazakhstan with the up-coming Independence Day and wish everyone health, peace and happiness.

The construction of Ice Town in Astana has already become a tradition. It is erected every year, closer to the New Year and Christmas celebrations. Sculptures in Ice Town are always united with a common theme, making Ice Town a unique complex of different and marvelous sculptures.

In the centre of Town is placed a rink and, of course, ice slides, which are always very popular with local children despite the severe cold, strong wind and ceaseless snow. The sculptures are made of firm ice bricks and often represent figures of animals or the world-famous architectural structures like Big Ben or the Eiffel Tower. Sculptors can unrecognisably change a piece of an ice to symbolise the Baiterek, or castles, or fairy-tale characters, and other incredible constructions. In the evening the ice sculptures have illuminated portholes inside, thereby becoming bright and colourful. Construction of the

Marvelous frozen city township annually brings in millions of tenge!

This year four Ice Towns are planned to be composed in Astana in general. The biggest one has already been built in front of the Khan Shatyr shopping mall. The main New Year’s tree of the country (25 m high) has been installed in the centre of Ice Town. There are 200 sculptors that have been engaged in the construction of Ice Town!

The area of Ice Town is about 2,000 square meters. More than 5,000 cubes of ice and 7,000 cubes of artificial snow will be used during construction. An ice skating rink, ice slides, snow sculptures, cartoon characters, snowy panels and other magical heroes will be available for visitors to Ice Town in 2015! Three other winter towns will be built in front of the Mayor’s House, on the Essil River and near the Otan-Ana monument.

Spirited Away is a Japanese animated film written by the legend Hayao Miyazaki after he came back from his retirement. The movie follows the story of a ten year old girl called Chihiro. Chihiro and her parents are moving to a rural town, but unfortunately take a wrong turn and end up in a ghost town. As

The final home match for Astana’s first season in UEFA Champions league ended in a disappointing draw against Portuguese Benfica - 2-2. The first half of the match was perfect for the home side. Astana scored two goals in first 20 minutes by the efforts of Patrick Twumasi, with the assist of Junior Kabananga, and the goal of Marin Anicic, with the assist of Foxi Kethevoama. However, Benfica made a painful equaliser, by the efforts of Raul Jimenez, and by that decreased the possibility of Astana to play in play-offs to 0%.

The next and the last match of Kazakh championship will occur in Istanbul, where they will fight for a chance to play in the Europe league with Galatasaray, the champions of Turkey.

The match was incredible. The atmosphere on the stadium was fascinating. Astana fans were very exited to cheer on their team. They were shouting Astana! The players were playing incredibly well. I was present at the match and I will never forget this and the emotions that it gave me. When Astana scored the 2nd goal it was incredible! Astana was leading against Benfica! Soon after Benfica started to score, and scored two goals. When the match finished everybody was proud. The score was 2-2 which was a very good result for Astana.

they walk around the empty town, the family find freshly-prepared food and Chihiro's parents eat it. Chihiro herself doesn't eat it, but goes exploring. While exploring, she meets a boy named Haku who tells her that her parents are in danger. Worried, she runs back to her parents, but finds that they turned into pigs. She now has to find Haku to help her parents turn back into humans.

Spirited Away is a fantastic movie that has so

many things to say: the importance of words, materia listic greed, and the power of love.

Miyazaki showed that the world is relatively safe for children, but he also ackno wledg ed pain and dread in ways that other animated films wouldn't dare

Once a year, there is a special event for people to help others. They just need to come to the Annual Christmas Charity Bazaar inheld the Astana Radison Hotel and buy other countries cultural goods. All the money which was collected during the bazaar was given to charity for children who are not as fortunate and children with no homes.

Christmas is probably the most notable holiday in the world. More than 35% of the population on Earth (2.3 billion people) are connected with this wonderful holiday. Christmas is a worldwide product of endeavor and thousands years of evolution. This month discover the origins of Christmas traditions from around the world!

S rozhdestvom!KazakhstanChristmas in Kazakhstan is almost always

snowy, as it snows for around four months of the year. About 70% of people in Kazakhstan are Muslims, so Christmas isn't a big holiday and 25th December is a day just like any other day. This means the shops are open, the public transport is running and everyone is at work.

Christians in Kazakhstan don't normally celebrate Christmas on Christmas day, unless they happen to be off work or it’s a Sunday. Instead, the main Christmas celebrations are on the Sunday before Christmas Day. Christians in Kazakhstan have translated some English songs into Kazakh and Russian and there are a few traditional songs that were composed in Kazakhstan, but they normally sing their usual worship songs in church on the day they celebrate Christmas.

As we know sometimes New Year celebrations are very similar, but in the world some countries celebrate differently and even on another date.

Thailand-BangkokThe Songkran Festival is celebrated in Thailand like

New Year’s Day, from 13-15 April. Thai people usually pour water on themselves in the New Year because they believe it will wash away their sins and bad luck. Also their calendar starts from birth of the Buddha, so in April 2016 they will celebrate 2559th year.

Brazil-Rio De JanerioPeople usually wear costumes like in the Rio

Carnival thinking if they wear their costumes it will bring good luck, fortune, and prosperity in one’s life. Also they believe, if you wear white clothes that you will have luck, happiness and serenity for the whole year.

Australia-SydneyThe date and celebration style can be similar with

some countries, however New Year’s celebration in Sydney can be explained with one word, festival. Like the United States of America’s

New York and United Arab Emirate’s Dubai, Sydney offers a visual feast with uncountable amounts of fireworks that every one should see.

It doesn't matter where you are or what your tradition is, if you have people that you are happy with, then Happy New Year!

Annual Christmas Charity Bazaar

At the bazaar you have a chance to win great raffle prizes, taste traditional dishes from other countries, buy various goods at low prices and take part in many other amazing activities. This year‘s bazaar was attended not only by people from various countries, but also by different institutions and organisations, as well as Astana international schools.

It was nice to see Nurorda International School represented too, which also brought more of our students and teachers to this international event. Excellent job guys and we hope to see everyone at Nurorda participate next year!

that it will be filled with treats while they sleep. In Scandinavia, similar-minded children leave their shoes on the fireplace. This tradition can be traced to legends about Saint Nicholas. One legend tells of three poor sisters who could not marry because they had no money for a dowry. To save them from being sold by their father, St. Nick left each of the three sisters gifts of gold coins. One went down the chimney and landed in a pair of shoes that had been left on the hearth. Another went into a window and into a pair of stockings left hanging by the fire to dry.

AustraliaIn Australia, the holiday comes in the middle

of summer and it’s not unusual for some parts of Australia to hit 100 degrees Farenheit on Christmas Day. During the warm and sunny Australian Christmas season, beach time and outdoor barbecues are common. Traditional Christmas day celebrations include family gatherings, exchanging gifts and either usually seafood or barbeques.

During Maths Week, our teacher Ms Bineetha organised a memory challenge. Students from 9, 10 and 11th grades needed to learn Euler's number, as many as they could after the decimal point.

Ms Bineetha arranged this competition, because being able to solve maths problems depends on a number of skills that build on one another like building blocks. One of the most important blocks is the ability to remember. Children need to be able to keep all the numbers in their head, figure out what operation to use and create a written math problem at the same time. Scientists think that memory challenges like this will help to develop memorisation.

The best result was shown by student of 11th grade, Aliya Chuzhegulova, who remembered 156 numbers. Second place was given to Zeynep Naz Yelken of 10th grade. She also worked hard and remembered 77 numbers. Students that didn't take part in competition, watched with great interest. Our school is proud to have students with such a good memory. Keep up the good work!

Treasure Hunt during Maths week The maths treasure hunt, which was ideal for doing in a large space

or outside, had 24 questions which looked at different parts of the curriculum. The class was split into groups of two or three, and then set free to run around and find all of the answers in the correct order. From our school grades 8-11 participated. It was marvellous to watch each class battle for the top prize.

What do we need puzzles for? It's a simple game, but this competition really helps to develop maths skills.

The puzzle competition was organised for the lower grades. Students happily participated, and a major plus was that it was all about teamwork. What did the students have to do? The goals of collecting the jigsaw were:

•to acknowledge jigsaw puzzle competitions as a sport•to develop math skills•to entertain the kids•to foster friendship among jigsaw puzzle enthusiastsOur teachers really tried to do their best for our students, and the

children had a good time. Thanks to our teachers!Aisulu Tusupova, 10A

First of all, you need to understand that all of these competitions unite different students from completely different classes. Weeks like Math Week make our school life more interesting and colorful. Here are some competitions, activities that we had:

Sudoku- is fun and useful for all ages. I'm sure you have heard that this game increases your logic, strategy and brings calm and order. Mathы teachers posted many different Sudoku challenges on the floor and students tried to complete as fast as they could.

Type racing- this activity gave students typing practice, and developed computer skills. This activity helped to rear leaders in students. The relationships between students became closer, because of the competition.

Firstly it was amazing, teachers chose students who wanted to teach maths lessons from grades 1-6. In our school this year four students from grades 9, 10 and 11 were chosen to prepare a lesson on a new chapter and then needed to go to the younger students’ lessons to teach.

When you are a student teacher, your teachers control you and write comments about your performance. For students, it is such huge experience to teach lessons and share our knowledge. Our maths teachers gave us a wonderful chance to learn how to be a teacher. As one of the student teachers, I was so happy with that and thank our maths teacher Ms Bineetha Shiju for giving us a chance to be a teacher this year.

Santa Claus is a legendary figure who is said to bring gifts to children during New Year. According to the stories about him, Santa Claus lives in the North Pole with his wife, Mrs. Claus. Throughout the year Santa and his elves make toys for New Year. They also watch over children to see if they have been good or bad. On New Year’s Eve, Santa travels all over the world on a sleigh pulled by reindeer and delivers toys to each child's house. This short story makes children believe that Santa Claus does exist.

As New Year is approaching, children have the chance to meet Santa Claus during our

New Year signifies a new beginning. For some of us, it means that it is time to start anew. Before each year ends, most of us write down our New Year’s Resolution. These are things that we want to achieve, have or change in the upcoming year. As we can notice, when we do these things, the focus is solely on ourselves.

“Letters to Santa Claus”storytelling activity and pretend play or make-believe play (the acting out of stories which involve multiple perspectives and the playful manipulation of ideas and emotions). This acti-vity helps nurture creativity and imagination for the child’s development and enhancement of cognitive and reasoning skills. We also had a “letter to Santa Claus” where they wrote what they want to have this New Year. Of course, with the collaboration of parents, all wishes will

be granted to the children thinking all received presents are from Santa. In the end, believing in a story like this in not about deceiving children, but engaging them in different exercises which help them develop their skills while providing one of the best experiences that they would ever have.

India is the great country known as the land of festivals. One of the famous and most celebrated festival is Diwali or Deepawali. For most Indians, it marks beginning of new year and is celebrated as festival of lights. Following Indian lunar calendar, it is celebrated in the second half of October or first half of November, after summer harvest. This year, it was celebrated on 11 November. In olden times, India was primarily an agrarian country. This was the time when granaries were full and long summer was coming to an end. Diwali marked the end of harvest season. The word Diwali is a shorter version of “deepavali”, meaning “row of lamps.” It is traditionally celebrated by lighting small clay lamps with oil and candles around homes. Families get together for the festival and exchange gifts with friends and relatives. Indeed, lot of sweets are eaten on this day. There are lot of fireworks also. “Rangoli”, a traditional decoration of vibrant colors,

is done at the entrance of house for good luck. Rangoli can be made with coloured powders, colored rice or flowers.

We informed the children of Kindergarten about Diwali festival in order to make students aware of different traditions around the world and prepare them to be truly

international persons in future. Students were shown slides about Diwali celebration in India. We made Rangoli with dried flowers and lighted few wax lamps in the class room on the occasion. We also had a small celebration with snacks and juice. Students really enjoyed Diwali celebration.

The Giving Tree

The Giving Tree by Shel Silver stein teaches us the importance of giving, selflessness and uncon ditional love. The Rain bow kids, after hearing the story, were deeply inspired by it so instead of wishing for something for themselves, they decided to take on a different course. They decided to put up their own giving tree and hang their wishes for people who are close to them. They all agreed that it was better to make a wish for those

who care for and love them a lot. Through this little good deed, they hope that they could express their gratitude and put a smile on the faces of the people whom they dedicated their wishes for.
