Most of the low income neighborhood tend to neglect the open space and public health. The public space is therefore; not well defined and emphasized. The low income neighborhoods have a lot of problems such as the deteriorated air quality, social justice problems, increasing public health problems, safety problems such as violence and dangerous streets, heat island effect. How can we provide a neighborhood for the low income residents to settle down while also creating energetic and health communities and public living space? How to generate new dynamics, improving the quality of life? In the Directed Design Research, I would find the possibilities to use the open space to repair and improve the problems of the low income neighborhoods.

Blur and Disappear of the Urban BoundaryDiversity elolves into an ideology which is rooted in our city and our life. Nowaday, the relationship of different cities are closer and closer, the urban boundary blurs and disappears. It is very accurate to describe Shenzhen and Hong Kong as twin cities nowadays.Big idea: 0.5 Custom Line"0.5 Custom Line": The citizens of Hong Kong and Shenzhen don't need the passport to go to the other city. Shenzhen citizens don't need to go to the downtown of Hong Kong to access the institution and laws of Hong Kong. They can go to the "0.5 Custom Line". At the same time, the institution of Hong Kong can provide the commercial and other service to the Shenzhen citizens. On the other hand, in the "0.5 Custom Line", the Hong Kong citizens can access the quality service in Shenzhen, at the same time, Shenzhen can provide various kinds of service to the Hong Kong Citizens.

Food Cart CultureShenzhen's Soft Urbanism
Shenzhen is a city forever changing. This condition is exacerbated by the city's need to plan at the large scale to establish a city of the future. In the short and mid term, this inevitably creates gaps at the urban small scale. Within the gaps in life culture and services this creates Shenzhen's dynamic "Food Cart Culture". It is within this condition of civic instability that this SOFT form of urbanism evolves. It is one that creates new spaces ad hoc, without planning, and without permanence, the antithesis of the broader scope of development within Shenzhen.
Our intention is to use this research as the beginning of a discussion of the importance and effects of itinerant vendor and how it can be made more official and its legality and urban impact better understood, and generally more acceptable.

Our works are exhibited in the Shenzhen & Hong Kong B i - c i ty B i enna le o f Urbanism/ Architecture in 2009
For the biennale, we create a Biennale Idea-Cart which is based on the drawing we do and sell our research, the CASE STUDY, the CART DRAWING DOCUMENTATION to the Biennale visitors as a series of products such as PoKer, postcard, mini-books. This is a meta-cultural representation of our research as the object of our research and sold in the manner of our research.

CART DOCUMENTATION
We are very interested in the food carts themselves. So we investigate all forms that Shenzhen food carts take, and do detailed CART DRAWINGS in black and white which show how the carts do their job, and how they are suited to not only their products and customers, but also the other necessities of the itinerant seller, mobility, storage, maintenance, escape...etc.

CASE STUDY Background:Food carts, apart from being design elements and social necessities, become Shenzhen's architecture of the small scale. The city is invested in developing itself architecturally, but this is a top-down dynamism. The small scale is necessarily ignored or abused or cast-off through this radical large-scale imagining of the city. In parts of many neighborhood, the carts become the architecture. When they arrive, they fundamentally change the urban environments in positive and negative ways. They change how traffic flows, how spaces are used, how neighborhoods are defined…

The itinerant vendors are fluid, sensitive...Unlike fixed physical architecture, the Soft Architecture defined by the Food Carts represents an opportunity to explore a type of space design that is wholly unplanned but is driven by the desire of the city( the opportunities and necessities of the flows of people) and the pressure of the city( the curators).Unlike built space, the Soft Architecture defined by the Food Carts have the ability to return to the before condition. The food carts add a sense of temporality to the city. Points in the city evolve and change with the changing time of day. The food carts redefine the physical limits of a space, or even define a space where previously there was void.
We take the photos for this interesting site every 30 minutes. At 8:30 am. There is nearly no food carts there. At 9:00 am, the curb appears a large number of food carts which sell the breakfast. Because there are many office buildings in the site, a large number of white-collar workers go to work at this time and need to have breakfast. …At 10:00 am, the food carts which sell the breakfast disappear gradually. The space of the curb is void. After 10:30 am, there appears a large number of food carts which sell fast food for lunch( rice, dished accompanying the staple food, soup), they gradually occupy the physical limits of the space. The Saide Science and Technology Building is in construction in the site, many workers need to have lunch at noon, as a result, there appears a large amount of food carts which sell fast food for lunch. At 13:00 pm, the food carts which sell the lunch disappear gradually. The space of the curb is void again.

After the initial survey, we choose one interesting site regarding the food carts culture in Shenzhen- Nanshan District Gaoxin Metro Station High-tech Development Zone Kejinan Road for CASE STUDY. In regards to the urban effects( SOFT ARCHITECTURE) of the food cart, we address how the carts play a role in the creation and operation of the city, exploring how food carts manipulate the spaces they occupy.
Our primary concern is: based on the time sensitive, how the fluid nature of the space of the food carts change, how they choose to arrange themselves, how they both occupy a position in the city, and serve the city.

The Concept of Montage City:
Montage, means "putting together in a certain order".For example, the film has many scenes, but when they are putting together with a certain order, it makes a story. From the research and analysis before, I found that the site is very eclectic, it makes up of or combines elements from a variety of sources. But I find some problems. The eclectic site is like a mess, a patchwork, there are a lot of elements, but they have no order. In my concept, I use the TECHNIQUES of MONTAGE, remain the eclectic elements, and then consolidate and overlap them, and use some new elements crossing the site, like the bicycle-track system and open space system to connect all the elements in a coherent and logical way, to make it have order. All the elements grow individually but jointly to form a greater whole.

ANALYSIS Like the city Los Angeles, the site in downtown of Los Angeles is a melting pot of many different elements and with that much intermingling. The hodgepodge is highly democratic, and that it is precisely this hodgepodge which most beautifully reflects the richness and multiplicity of human aspirations.

Principle:1. Remain the eclectic elements in the site. The hodgepodge is highly democratic, and that it is precisely this hodgepodge which most beautifully reflects the richness and multiplicity of human aspirations.2. Use the montage techniques: CONSOLIDATE, OVERLAP, CROSSING (INTERSECT) and TIME/ DEPTH to connect all the eclectic element in a coherent way, and meet all people's need.
Goal: Connect the eclectic element in a coherent way. Make them have order. And meet all people's need.

Sculpture GardenL.A.'s Backyard
Pleasant Little Tokyo & The Arts District
Little Tokyo is a Los Angeles district that is nestled south of Union Station and the EL Pueblo and just west of the Los Angeles River and the Arts District. Little Tokyo is filled with rich culture, history and value. It demands the attention of its surrounding or off-limits districts. It longs to be the oasis of its neighboring counterparts, by offering greener, slower pedestrian friendly streets with enhanced cultural destinations and a unique connection to the river. The big idea is incorporated into creating the backyard feeling into Little Tokyo.Based on the strategy plan of the team, I translate the big idea to the street level to the site, create the sculpture garden which serve as a pleasant backyard for Little Tokyo. Permeating the energy from the Little Tokyo, and the gateway to the friendly street, attract more people and penetrate the energy to the site. The direction of movement follows and works with the topography and offers a barrier free access to the center. The activity spine will be denser through the recharged open space. And the nearby space within the central area of sculpture garden will be given new order and value.

China is a country that has a vast population, with limited land available. To make room for more open space, constructing tall buildings is a favorite choice for many. As Le Corbusier had said in “Bright City”, and I am paraphrasing here, that since tall buildings meet the need for sun, air, and water, it is very rational to build them. The question I pose is: To what extent can this “rationality”be a value judgment of our living conditions? Simply because it is rational does not mean it is better. For example, the building coverage in the neighborhood of Paris is very high. Most residential were built as an enclosure structure. Sunlight, air, water and other conditions are not as satisfying as those for tall buildings. However, in this kind of high coverage residential, people cherish their surrounding courtyard spaces and their squares highly. The open space in the city becomes a melting pot for social communication and different activities, creating a vibrant and interesting atmosphere for the society.
In my opinion, mere rationality can sometimes result in monotony. Therefore in my design, I try for the harmonious coexistence of the high-density residential and the open space. At the same time, for open space, I attempt to manage the relationship between the neighborhood and the city, in order that the neighborhood becomes an integrated part of the city.
