MEZUZAH PRAYER
MEZUZAHWhy a Mezuzah?
In addition to its role as a declaration and reminder of our faith, the mezu-zah is also a symbol of G-d’s watchful care. The name of G-d is an acronym for the Hebrew words which mean “Guardian of the doorways of Israel.” Placing a mezuzah on the doors of a home or office protects the inhabi-tants—whether they are inside or out.The mezuzah should then be affixed to the upper third of the door-post on the right side as one enters the house or room. If the doorpost is wide enough to permit, the mezuzah should be tilted with the upper part slanting inward toward the house or room.
Baruch Atah A-do-nai Elo-heinu Melech haolam asher kideshanu bemitzvotav vetzivanu likboa mezuzah.
Blessed are you, G-d our G-d, King of the Universe, Who has made us holy with His commandments and commanded us to affix a mezuzah.

LALOThe experience of Shabbat is an experience of and for a lifetime. You don't need to change your lifestyle to make it work. You can build slowly, taking on a little at a time, so that the commitment will be a natural and lasting one.It is a gift you will give yourself and one which you will want to share.

Hanukkah is a holiday that celebrates the liberation from oppression. It also provides a strong argument in favor of freedom of worship and religion. In spite of the human action that is commemorated, never far from the surface is the theology that the liberation was possible only thanks to the miraculous support of the Divine.

Freedom is the primary theme of the seder, with numerous other recurring themes and motifs. The seder permits Jews to worship God through prayer, study, and learning by taking part in what is essentially a lesson of Jewish history, literature, and religion. Participation in the seder lets one symbolically and vicariously relive the Exodus, where past and present merge.

The seder is designed to help us re-member the story of the Exodus and, more importantly, our place in it. The most important words of the Haggadah are, "B'khol dor va-dor hayav adam lirot et atzmo k'ilu hu yatzah mi-Mitzrayim"--"All people, in every generation, should see themselves as having experienced the Exodus from Egypt." The seder is much more than a history lesson; it is our yearly re-enactment of the liberation and continuity of the Jewish people.

TZEDAKAH
Tzedakah is fundamental to Judaism; it is at the very heart of who we are as Jews. Tzedakah is not a choice. It is one of the 613 mitzvot, or obligations, we live by. Many of our sages considered it the mostimportant commandment. The root of the Hebrew word is tzedek—justice, or righteousness. In the Bible, tzedakah means “righteous behavior.” We do not give to chari-ty out of kindness alone. We perform acts of tzedakah as we seek to create a just world. The commandment of tzedakah is so important that the recipient of our charity is considered to be granting us a favor by allowing us to fulfill our obligation. The poor must also give what they can, so that they, too, are able to perform mitzvot.

The sheva berakhot are the real heart of the Jewish wedding ceremony; the themes of joy and celebration and the ongoingpower of love are expressed. The blessings, from one to seven, begin with the kiddush over wine and increase in intensity in theirimagery and metaphors. It is no accident that there are seven of these blessings, since the number seven brings to mind the seven days of creation. The final blessing culminates with imagery of the entirecommunity singing and celebrating with the bride and groom, reminding all present that the couple standing under the huppah is a link in the chain of Jewish continuity.

Whether it is making the mundane sacred, or incorporating the sacred into your family's routines, there are a variety of ways to develop Jewish routines for your children and your family. It is as important for parentsto model the rituals and routines as it is to encourage them in your children. As your children's first and most important role models, you need to "practice what you preach" to your children for them to trulyabsorb the values and traditions you are trying to instill in them through the practice of Jewish rituals and establishment of Jewish-themed routines. Before you know it, your children will be making Jewish memories that will last a lifetime.
