The kingdom at Bujang Valley is believed to have evolved earlier than Srivijaya Empire (centered at Palembang) but came under Srivijaya’s influence in the 7th century.
H I S T O R Y
Kedah was the transit port for traders (awaiting the monsoon winds) travelling through the Malacca straits. Kedah Peak, or known as Gunung Jerai was used as a navigational becon for these traders. Traders soon propagated Hinduism and Buddhism and their culture, building shrines and temples along the coastal area, evident from artefacts found at the valley.
With the decline of Srivijaya in the 11th century, the Bujang kingdom became powerful again but waned in importance with the rise of Malacca as an entrepot.
