Research Questions

• How do attitudes towards engineering, science, math, technology, and STEM careers differ among genders in grades 4-8th grade?

• How do perceptions towards math, science, technology, engineering, and STEM careers differ among age levels in a rural environment?

• STEM Semantic Survey Pre and PostTest

Page 9: SITE Middle School STEAM Camp Perspectives and Attitudes Towards STEM

Participants

• 48 students

• 4th and 5th grade, 6th-8th grade

• 33 males and 15 females

STEM Dispositions by Age

• Only one STEM disposition was significantly correlated with age (p<.05). STEM disposition towards Science was correlated at r=. 256 (p<.04, 1 tailed).

• By the posttest administration, for the boys (n=33) there was a positive association between age and dispositions towards science (r=.432, p=.03, 1 tailed). For the girls, (n=15), there was a slightly negative relationship between age and dispositions towards science (r = -.219, NS).

Discussion

• Terminology and Vocabulary

• Limited Participation Population– Need to repeat with larger participant pool

• Career Guest Speakers: Positive Impact

• Fabrication Printing Impact Engineering Dispositions

• Student Reflection Showcase Impact

• Rocket Activity Encourages Older Male Dispositions Towards Science
