1. Feature Description, Integrity, Eligibility:

SITS# 32 WA __ _

The feature is a one room prairie school on a concrete block foundation. The gable roof is covered with asphalt shingles. There is a yellow brick chimney at the peak of the roof near the south end. The soffits are closed. the building measures 24 feet east to west and 36 feet north to south.

There is a wide trim board located under the peak ends of the roof. The remainder of the siding is 6 inch wood lap with 6 inch wood lap corner trim. There is a wood one step porch that leads to the 4 panel wood door. There is a transom with two pane window about the door and above this is a large circle filled in with wood, perhaps a window. There are three double hung, four over four, windows on both the east and west sides of the school. There are decorative cornices above all the windows and the entry door on the outside of the building. There is a foyer as you step into the school and 4 wood panel doors to either side that go to the coatroom area which is open to the school room. The walls in both the foyer and school room are covered with pressed tin down to shiplap wainscot. The wall angles to the ceiling and this slope at the top of the wall has decorative tin with a leaf design that then connects to the ceiling which is also covered with pressed tin in a different design than the walls . There are blackboards on the entire south wall as well as the school room side of the foyer wall. The floor is tongue and groove hardwood, replaced with the move. There is a stove near the north school room wall. There are desks, books, pictures, maps and other items common to a country school. Light fixtures inside and exterior wiring suggest electricity.

The first school term began in April 1886 and closed in 1908. The school then served as the Forest River Township Hall until the late1960's. It was donated to the Walsh County Historical Society in 1976 and moved to the museum grounds in that year.

This building sits in a fenced yard owned by the museum. There is a large school, used as a museum, just to west, houses to the south, a log cabin to the east and open area to the north.
