than 5,200 acres of developed terrain, Vail is one of the big-gest ski resorts in the world, and third largest in the United States. Spanning seven miles, Vail’s back bowls are an expe-rience you’ll never forget.

Finally, in March the club re-turns to Sun Valley, Idaho, after a nine-year absence. So who might find this trip ap-pealing? Maybe anyone who:

1. Is looking for a good value

2. Has never been to Idaho (that would be me!)

3. Is prone to getting altitude sickness (5,945 ft at base, 9,150 at summit)

4. Would like a dedicated be-ginner/lower intermediate terrain area (don’t worry, there is also plenty of ter-rain for the experienced skier)

I hope you are as excited about these trips as I am. I look forward to seeing you on one or more of these trips. Please see Page 5 for special information on this year’s trip signups.

As you are aware I’m sure, COVID 19 is making it very difficult to socialize. As a club, we have had to postpone or cancel all of our recent events. Vice President Karen Nugent has devised a plan to get to-gether at least virtually, using Zoom. See Page 5 for details.

Enjoy your summer and please stay safe.

Drum roll please…and now the moment you’ve been waiting for. It is with great pleasure we announce our 2021 ski trips!

The trip committee did fo-cus on trips that ranked high on our annual trip sur-vey, where we could get a great value and also use the Epic Pass, as our local ski area –Hidden Valley—has become part of Epic Re-sorts. Many of you stated that you intend to get an EPIC ski pass for the coming season.

Of course, you may have concerns regarding COVID-19 for next year’s ski sea-son. You’ll be glad to know that all the contracts for our trips next year contain a COVID clause. We will re-ceive complete refunds for any trip cancelled due to the pandemic.

Once again we are offering three ski trips for the com-ing ski season. First up is the Flatlander Ski Associa-tion (FSA) trip in January to Telluride, Colorado. We would love to have you go on this trip and represent the St Louis Ski Club in some of the fun competitions, although you are by no means obligated to com-pete. I always enjoyed the snowshoe relay competi-tion, and usually participat-ed in the women’s downhill race. Do I “knock it out of

the park”? No. Do I have fun? Absolutely!

So let me take a step back and briefly describe the FSA ski trip. It is one of the larg-est and oldest amateur ski events in the United States. Nine mid-west cities come together and compete in various snow-related activi-ties. The ski destination gen-erally changes every year, which I think helps keep things fresh and inviting. On the final evening of competi-tion there is a lovely awards dinner. I find it very fun to connect with other ski clubs and skiers! And what’s not to love about the historic town of Telluride, which is just a gondola ride away.

And if you don’t have or in-tend to get an EPIC pass, know that the lift tickets for FSA trips are always at a deep discount due to the large number of FSA trip attendees.

Our 2021 Trips I am excited to report our trips for 2021. This year we feature a 4-day and two 6-day ski trips. Our first trip will be the Flat-land Skiing Association (FSA) trip to Telluride, Colorado, Jan-uary 30 to February 6, with lodging at The Peaks. This ski-in ski-out luxury hotel is the nicest accommodation I’ve stayed in in my over 20 years with the club. This FSA trip will be for a full week with 6 ski days. This trip is being cap-tained by long-time club mem-ber Paul Snyder. Our second trip will be 4 ski days in Vail, Colorado, Febru-ary 21-26. We are staying at the Highline Vail hotel. It in-cludes a daily hot breakfast and a welcome reception! This trip is captained by returning cap-tain Lou Boyer. Our third trip is 6 ski days in Sun Valley, Idaho, March 13-20. It has been a few years since the club has skied in Sun Valley, America’s first destina-tion ski resort. We will be stay-ing in apartments in the histor-ic Sun Valley Lodge. In addi-tion to the club party, this trip features a welcome reception. This trip is being captained by returning captain Dan McGurk.

Single Person Supplement For a limited time through August, we are continuing the single person supplement for our members who would rather not share a room. Note: Besides members pay-ing the additional cost of the room, we must add the cost of other shared trip expenses since each single supplement reduces the number of par-ticipants by one. These in-clude expenses for the club administrative fee, trip cap-tain trip credits and shuttle fees. In addition to the cost of the trip, the following is the single person supplement price by trip. The full single person supplement is due with your deposit. Telluride: $1,200 Vail: $ 720 Sun Valley: $ 925

Procedure Reminders

If you plan on racing on the FSA trip, please be prepared to wear a helmet. Also, if you need return lift tickets due to medical issues, a doctor’s note is now re-quired. The resorts used to

be more lenient for lift tickets refunds, but no longer. If you are not sure how many days to ski, go with your minimum number. The good news is you can usually add additional days at the resort for the same discounted rate.

Final Notes

We continue to offer PayPal. No more searching for stamps and envelopes. You can do it all online. Check out this issue for more detailed info on our trips and signup procedures. And this year you can rest assured we are covered in the unforeseen circumstances that our cur-rent situation impacts skiing in 2021. No one will be out money if an entire trip is can-celled due to the coronavirus. As always, though, we strong-ly urge you to consider trip insurance in case you are forced to withdraw from a trip for health or safety reasons. I thank the trip committee for putting together a great group of trips based on your trip sur-veys. As always, I strongly suggest you sign up early (and often) so you will not be left out.
