Imagine what it would be like toattend a major league baseball game onJuly 4. You arrive early in anticipationof the pre-game activities celebratingIndependence Day. Veterans from ev-ery branch of the military are honoredon the field, and a huge American flagcovers most of the outfield. At the end ofthe National Anthem, two F-16 fighterjets roar over the crowd. It is an amaz-ing display of patriotism!

As you sit down, you notice the manto your left is wearing a hat that says“Vietnam Veteran.” He turns to look atyou. His face is showing emotion. In asoft but firm voice he exclaims, “Youhave no idea how much it hurts whenyounger generations take that flag for

granted. My friends died for that flag!”You immediately know what he is

talking about. Earlier during the na-tional anthem, several teenagers in yoursection kept their hats on and talkedthroughout the National Anthem. Theytreated it as something common orordinary. They had no love for the flagthat this man’s friends had lost theirlives fighting for.

Do you feel the man’s pain? Are youfrustrated on his behalf? Does the knowl-edge that people died for the flag heightenyour emotion? If so, ask yourself thefollowing question: Christian, what doesit say about our hearts when we take forgranted the very institution for whichChrist died?

What are we communicating whenwe no longer honor the church throughloyalty and commitment, choosing in-

Scott Attebery Scott Atteberystead to treat it as common or ordinary? What does it say when families spendmore money on tournament leaguesports than they give to their localcongregations? What are we to thinkwhen corporate worship services are

regarded as optional, take-it-or-leave-itevents?

Has disrespect and lack of apprecia-tion for the bride for whom Christ diedbecome all too familiar?

Recently, I was performing a wed-ding ceremony during which I quotedEphesians 5:25: “Husbands, love yourwives, as Christ loved the church andgave himself up for her…” While Paul’sintention is to teach Christian men howto love their wives, I think it is fair toask a related question: Do Christianslove the church the way that Christloves the church?

The Bible says that Jesus loves thechurch in the same way a bridegroomjoyfully loves his bride (Isaiah 62:5).The church is precious to Christ. Hegave his life for the church (Ephesians5:25).

If we claim to love Christ, and yet we

“Righteousness exalteth a nation: butsin is a reproach to any people” (Prov-erbs 14:34).

America’s only hope is foundin this verse. Our nation has agodly founding and a gloriouspast, but if the Lord tarries, what kind of nation will ourchildren inherit?

Evidently Americans believethe economy is the top issue. But I’d rather leave my chil-dren the legacy of a godly na-tion than great wealth squan-dered in a godless society.

Righteousness is our great-est need. Alexander Hamiltonsaid, “People get the government theydeserve.” Something has happened inAmerica. If we want to know what’swrong, we need to look in the mirror.

Righteousness Exalts A NationRighteousness Exalts A NationRighteousness Exalts A NationRighteousness Exalts A NationRighteousness Exalts A NationAmerica was born in a revival. The

Great Awakening swept the land in a

flame of righteousness. Out of that, schools were built, principles taught, and character became strong. A new-born nation declared her independencefrom England and upon almighty God.

Our Founding Fathers knew the bestgovernment was the least government. The more character you have, the more

responsibility you’ll assume, andthe less government you’ll need.

You cannot have true lib-erty without true righteous-ness. They are inextricably in-

terwoven. For example, if a man be-comes a criminal, he’s put in jail. Fail-

ing his responsibilities, his libertiesare taken away. A baby has noresponsibilities. But he also hasno liberties: he can’t choose when

he’s going to sleep or what he’ll wear. Ashe grows and assumes responsibilities,he’s given more liberties.

We will have more or less liberty indirect proportion to our character. Whenwe lose character - righteousness - we

don’t love his church, something is desperately wrong! We must restore a sense of honor among our

congregations for the local church. It’s time for churchesto emphasize commitment and loyalty. Let’s teach ourchildren to appreciate and cherish the church bysetting the example through our own passion andparticipation.

Maybe you’ve noticed a lack of love and commitmenttoward the church in your own heart. If that’s the case, allow God’s Word to ignite a new passion for his churchin your heart. To get you started, here are six biblicalreasons to love your local church.

I. The Local Church Publicly Identifies UsI. The Local Church Publicly Identifies UsI. The Local Church Publicly Identifies UsI. The Local Church Publicly Identifies UsI. The Local Church Publicly Identifies UsWith ChristWith ChristWith ChristWith ChristWith Christ

Acts 2 begins with the day of Pentecost and endswith a glimpse into early church life. The group of newchurch members is described as “devoted to the apostles’teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of breadand the prayers” (Acts 2:42) and that “day by day [theywere] attending the temple together…” (2:46).Notice what the last sentence of the chapter says: “Andthe Lord added to their number day by day those whowere being saved” (2:47). To whose number is the Lordadding the new believers? To the church. By Christ’sown design, the local church identifies us with Christ.

When we neglect to join a church or take ourmembership lightly, we are like the man who tells hisgirlfriend, “I love you, but I don’t see any reason to getmarried.” He enjoys her company on occasion, butdoesn’t want to make a public commitment. Thank-fully, this is not how Christ loves us. Yet is this howwe treat his church?

How Do I KnowIf My Child Is A Christian?

by Kelby Johnsonby Kelby Johnsonby Kelby Johnsonby Kelby Johnsonby Kelby JohnsonI have worked with many kids and

teenagers over the last fifteen years. Before that, I was one. And in all of thistime, the idea of salvation and assur-ance is probably the issuethat seems to be the mostconfusing. I especially be-gan to think more about itas my own children grew inage. I had always prayed forthem that God would workin their life but things reallychanged as they began toknow biblical truths and askquestions. I’ve talked withmany parents about thistopic as well. And while Ihave total confidence in thesovereignty of God to work through HisHoly Word and Holy Spirit to savesouls, there are still some things we canthink through to help us counsel ourchildren or anyone else through ques-tions about the gospel.

My ConcernMy ConcernMy ConcernMy ConcernMy ConcernI am convinced that many people

hear their child or a child in theirchurch say "I am saved" or "I got saved"

and their first response isto pat them on the backand say, "I am so proud ofyou." Should we be excited?Absolutely! But we mustbe careful that the childknows it is God who savesthem and nothing inthemselves. The next stepfor most parents is to sendtheir child to talk to a pas-tor about these things. Thisis a fine idea. Pastors wantto talk to people about the

gospel so we love this opportunity. Butwhat I've often seen is a rush to get thechild to the pastor's office, down a churchaisle, and into the baptistry.

I am concerned by this hurried pro-cess because I want children to have a

real biblical assurance for their salva-tion that is not based on tradition, notbased on a parent's or a pastor's prod-ding, and that is not confusing to thechild. I don't want the child to have afalse confidence because an adult, even

an adult who has good intentions, mis-led them. I surely don't want to be theperson who ever turns a child awayfrom Christ but I also don't want to bethe person who gives a child false assur-ance that leads them to questioning anddoubting for years. How do we find thebalance? I think there is a way to workthrough this but it requires muchprayer, patience, and thoughtful ques-tioning.

What Do I Listen For?What Do I Listen For?What Do I Listen For?What Do I Listen For?What Do I Listen For?When we take our child to the doctor,

how does the doctor find out what iswrong? He asks questions. "Whathurts?" "How long has it been hurting?""Is it a sharp pain or a dull pain?" Andmany other questions like that. This ishow we must counsel our children, byasking questions. I’m assuming at thispoint that the child has heard the basicsof the gospel message: The sinless life, substitutionary death, and resurrec-

tion of Jesus Christ. If the child showsa lack of key knowledge of those things,I must go back and talk about thosethings before proceeding. It is the powerof the gospel that saves. The messageabout Jesus Christ is essential!

As I talk to a child, I begin askingquestions and listening very closely. The first thing I want to hear is for thechild to express repentance of sin, sav-ing faith (belief) in Jesus Christ, andconfession of Jesus as Lord. Those threethings are the biblical response to thegospel. The child may not be able to usethose words or know exactly what theyall mean, but I will ask questions (whichI call “Gospel Investigation”) to try andsee if these three things areunderstood: repentance, belief, and con-fession.

Repent, Believe, ConfessRepent, Believe, ConfessRepent, Believe, ConfessRepent, Believe, ConfessRepent, Believe, ConfessS o m e o n e

once said thatrepentance andbelief are twosides of the samecoin. They areundoubtedlymentioned to-gether inScripture. Jesussaid, "The timeis fulfilled andthe Kingdom ofGod is at hand; repent and believe in thegospel." (Mark 1:15) Paul echoed, "Tes-tifying both to Jews and to Greeks ofrepentance toward God and of faith inour Lord Jesus Christ." (Acts 20:21)

Here is a simple definition for each ofthese responses:

Repentance can be defined as a “heart-felt sorrow for sin, a renouncing of it,and a sincere commitment to forsake itand walk in obedience to Christ."(Grudem)

Saving faith (belief) is accepting, re-ceiving, and resting upon Christ alonefor salvation. It is a deep inward trust, not just a mental assent. In other words,it is truly with the heart not just withthe head.

Confession of Jesus Christ as Lord isusually the first outward sign of some-one who has repented and believed.

Paul said it this way, "If you confesswith your mouth that Jesus is Lord andbelieve in your heart that God raisedhim from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and isjustified, and with the mouth one con-fesses and is saved." (Romans 10:9-10)

So, in summary, if I'm talking to mychild or anyone else about the gospel, Iask basic questions to help them thinkthrough the gospel and the gospel re-sponses as explained above. While ask-ing these questions, I use their re-sponses to try and figure out where theyare in their spiritual journey. I'm al-ways looking for ways to emphasizeChrist in this discussion.

Lifeword Community Radio, whichis less than four years old, has been aneffective tool in undergirding and sup-porting churches, pastors, and mission-aries in areas where traditional broad-casting doesn’t work as well. It hasallowed new languages and dialects tobe heard by millions in remote areas allover the world.

Pine Tree PrunerMy house sits in a pine

thicket. We had an-other "pine tree pruner"the other evening and

when I looked outside the next morningI saw what an excellent job the "pinetree pruner" had done. There werelimbs everywhere. Well, know-ing my granddaughter wascoming to mow that day, I hadto get busy.

Being quite ambitious, I be-gan picking up everything thatwas bigger than a pencil. That wastaking up a lot of time, so I began onlypicking up those bigger than my thumb.I soon decided that was going to take upa large portion of the rest of my life so Iupped my specs to anything bigger than

my arm and I finished just before thelawn mower arrived.

Not only did my pine trees get prunedbut a whole large tree fell on the fencebehind my house.

That afternoon, I heard what Ithought was a large lady walk-ing on my front porch in high-heeled shoes. When I went to

the front door there was a cowat my door. She and some ofher sisters had found thegap in the fence caused bythe fallen tree.

I'm just saying that you never knowwhat a day will bring and I am re-minded once again that no matter whatcomes along, God is there for me. ".....be-ing instant in season....." comes to mind.

lose liberty, for people who cannotlive responsibly from within must becontrolled from without.

James Madison said, “We havestaked the whole future of Americancivilization not upon the power ofgovernment - far from it - . . . [but]upon the capacity to govern and sus-tain ourselves according to the TenCommandments.” But today the TenCommandments are called “uncon-stitutional” and removed from class-rooms and many public buildings.

Sin - A Reproach To Any PeopleSin - A Reproach To Any PeopleSin - A Reproach To Any PeopleSin - A Reproach To Any PeopleSin - A Reproach To Any PeopleThe great American dream is dis-

solving because of sin: sexual perver-sion, killing unborn children, break-up of the family, obsession with ma-terial things, craving for pleasure.America is self-indulgent, out of con-trol.

With the erosion of character, werelinquish more responsibility to gov-ernment, and whatever it subsidizes, government says it must control. When we depend on government tofeed us, it will control us. Govern-ment is here to protect from tyrannyand punish evildoers, not meet ourneeds. Sure as night follows day,

when government provides, it begins toregulate. Then it’s free to oppress.

Look at our education system. It hasoutlawed God. The Bible is out, humanismis in. The Ten Commandments wereswapped out for values clarification, one-world government, glories of the welfarestate, and a new world order.

We’re now living in the shadows of anage. Our liberties are fast receding. Yousay, “But we still have lots of blessings inAmerica.” Yes, we do. But they are re-sidual blessings our forefathers left us.

Revival - The Restoration of a NationRevival - The Restoration of a NationRevival - The Restoration of a NationRevival - The Restoration of a NationRevival - The Restoration of a Nation“When the righteous are in authority,

the people rejoice. But then the wickedbear rule, the people mourn” (Proverbs29:2).

We must take America back. We don’thave to be a majority, we’re salt and light.Salt penetrates, purifies, heals, and pre-serves. To say “don’t mix politics andreligion” is like saying put the fish in onebarrel and the salt in another. But “if saltloses its savor,” Jesus said, “it’s good fornothing but to be cast out and troddenunder the feet of men.”

The church of Jesus Christ is being“trodden underfoot” because we’ve becomesalt without savor.

Our Constitution was written forpeople of character. Godly charactermust permeate our society. We mustset the standard in caring for our ownand the widows and orphans. We musttrain up our children, godly offspringwho will take leadership positions andreturn us to living by godly principles.

I want to leave my children andgrandchildren a godly nation. Don’tyou? God is our only hope, and revivalwill be the restoration to our nation.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN IN BIBLE SCHOOL?by Gary Thomas

"PLINK"I hesitate to even approach the subject that is tethered at the backside region of

what is left of my mind. It has been leashed there for many years now, and I fearif I approach too close, it will break free and unleash itself on an unsuspecting world.Well, here goes nothing.

Modern technology has greatly enhanced the quality of life ofmost people I know. Vehicles are equipped with, so I'm told, GPS,Satellite radio, back up warnings and video, heated seats, non-touch door openers, and keyless ignitions, to name a few. Theonly back up warning my 364,000 mile vehicle has is whensomeone begins yelling at me, or the dog yelps. I do have heatedseats, however, they are only activated during the summermonths. My air-conditioning is wonderful, but only during thewinter months. They are backwards, kind of like most of my life.

Dishwashers, microwaves, bedets, ro-bot vacuum cleaners, Wi-fi, solarpan…..SCREEEEEECHHHHHH!BEDETS? Moving on. All of these conveniences haverendered many a healthy teenage boy to while away hissummer break piled up on the couch staring at his cellphone. Perhaps life has become too easy? Not according tomost people I know. Life has just become more complicatedand busy for your average person.

That is why I enjoy gardening. It gets me back to a simplertime, even with the modern technology that has eveninvaded the outer world known simply as "the country".There is almost nothing more satisfying than getting to-gether with family and friends to have a good corn shuckin'.Maybe spending time on the front porch shelling peas comes

close. In my opinion, there is one thing that tops all others in quality satisfaction, and that is the "plink". The "plink" is simply the sound a jar lid makes when it seals. It was once an all familiar sound that most people knew and loved. As time rusheson, the "plink" may eventually fade away as have land lines and standardtransmissions.

For me, I'll just sit here and smile as I listen to the "plink".

Chuck Lee

Gospel Investigation Gospel Investigation Gospel Investigation Gospel Investigation Gospel Investigation Here are 21 questions to help you

investigate your own or your child'sunderstanding and acceptance of repen-tance, belief, and confession. I think itis helpful for all of us to think throughthese questions biblically, honestly, andpersonally to examine ourselves as Paulinstructs in 2 Corinthians 13:5. I havelisted multiple questions that corre-spond with each of the three gospelresponses.

RepentanceRepentanceRepentanceRepentanceRepentance1. What is sin?2. What is an example of asin? 3. Are you a sinner?4. How do you know you area sinner?5. Why is sin wrong?6. How does it make you feel when yousin?7. How does God feel about your sin? 8. Must God punish you for your sin?9. Why must God punish your sin?10. How does God punish your sin?11. Are you ready to abandon your sin?12. Why are you ready to abandon yoursin? 13. Will you abandon all your sin andobey Jesus Christ with your life?

BeliefBeliefBeliefBeliefBelief1. Since God hates sin, how can Godaccept you as a sinner?2. What did Jesus Christ do for yoursin? 3. Do you believe Jesus Christ died androse again?

4. Do you believe Jesus Christ died inyour place and rose again for you? 5. Do you believe with all your heartthat Jesus Christ is your Savior andLord?

ConfessionConfessionConfessionConfessionConfession1. Who is your Savior and Lord? 2. Do you surrender your life to JesusChrist? 3. Will you follow Jesus Christ and His

Word forever?

If I don't feel good about an answer, Iwill ask the question in a different way.I'm not trying to tell them the correctanswer, though I do explain what Scrip-ture says as we go along. I'm trying toget them to discover the truth and see ifthey realize the necessity of repentance, belief, and confession.

If all these questions are answered inwhat seems to be a heartfelt manner, Ifeel like the child has expressed anunderstanding and commitment to thegospel. (We’ll see in a moment that thisprofession alone is not the ultimateassurance for salvation.)

The next thing is to tell the child thatsince they have repented of their sin,

believed in Christ, and confessed Jesusas Lord, He is their King and they areto follow Him for the rest of their lives. I say things like...

-You are to learn God's Word so youknow what God expects of you.

-You are to learn to pray so you cancommunicate with God.

-You are to be active in a churchfamily so you can learn and grow andserve.

-You are to try your best tobe like Jesus in your attitudes, words, and actions.

As a parent, it is my callingto not only tell my child thosethings but to train them inhow to do those things and tomodel how to do those thingsin my own life. This is key in

helping our children become followers ofJesus Christ.

What’s Next?What’s Next?What’s Next?What’s Next?What’s Next?Some will not agree with my next

step, but it's what I feel is right based onwhat I've read and seen. I do NOT rushthe kid down the church aisle and intothe baptistry. I do discuss what baptismis with the child but my primarymindset is more about the child’s un-derstanding and response to the gospeland not so much on simply getting thembaptized. (As a pastor, I will honor theparent's wishes at this point though.I'm just talking about my own childrenand my recommendation for others.)

CHURCH NEWS IN BRIEF

Study: Unchurched will talk about faithby Bob Smietanaby Bob Smietanaby Bob Smietanaby Bob Smietanaby Bob Smietana

NASHVILLE (BP)NASHVILLE (BP)NASHVILLE (BP)NASHVILLE (BP)NASHVILLE (BP) -- Americans whodon't go to church are happy to talkabout religion and often think about themeaning of life, according to a newstudy released today (June 28).

They're also open to taking part incommunity service events hosted at achurch or going to a church concert, theresearch revealed. But only about athird say they'd be interested in going toa worship service, and few think aboutwhat happens after they die.

Those are among the findings of anew online survey of 2,000 unchurchedAmericans from LifeWay Research. Thesurvey, conducted in partnership withthe Billy Graham Center for Evange-lism at Wheaton College in Wheaton,Ill., found more than half of Americanswho don't go to church identify as Chris-tians.

But they are mostly indifferent to

organized religion, said Scott McConnell, executive director of LifeWay Research.

"Unchurched Americans aren't hos-tile to faith," he said. "They just don'tthink church is for them."

Talking about faith isn't tabooTalking about faith isn't tabooTalking about faith isn't tabooTalking about faith isn't tabooTalking about faith isn't tabooFor this survey, "unchurched" means

those who have not attended a worshipservice in the last six months, outside ofa holiday or special occasion like awedding.

Among their characteristics:-- Two-thirds (67 percent) are white-- Just over half (53 percent) are male-- About half (47 percent) have a high

school diploma or less-- Nearly two-thirds (62 percent) went

to church regularly as a child-- About a third (32 percent) consider

themselves nonreligious-- One in 5 identifies as Protestant, 1

in 4 as CatholicFew are turned off by conversations

about faith, McConnell said.Nearly half (47 percent) say they

discuss religion freely if the topic comesup. A third (31 percent) say they listenwithout responding, while 11 percentchange the subject.

Only about a third (35 percent) saysomeone has ever explained the benefitsof being a Christian to them.

Christians may be reluctant to talkabout their faith out of fear of offendingtheir friends, McConnell noted. But thesurvey found that fear is unfounded.

"Unchurched folks are not being over-whelmed by Christians talking abouttheir faith," McConnell said. "If faith isimportant to you, then your friends willbe interested in hearing about it."

A personal touch still mattersA personal touch still mattersA personal touch still mattersA personal touch still mattersA personal touch still mattersResearchers looked at the kinds of

activities unchurched Americans mightbe interested in as well as methods forinviting them to church.

About two-thirds (62 percent) wouldattend a church meeting about neigh-borhood safety. Half would take part ina community service event (51 percent),concert (45 percent), sports or exerciseprogram (46 percent), or neighborhoodget-together (45 percent) at a church.

"Concerns for neighborhood safetyand desire to express compassion to theunder-resourced seem to be the biggestpotential draws for the unchurched toget connected to a church," said RickRichardson, professor of evangelism andleadership at Wheaton College and re-search fellow for the Billy Graham Cen-ter for Evangelism. "Invite unchurchedpeople to those kinds of events, andmany say they will attend."

Fewer are interested in attending aworship service (35 percent), recoverygroup (25 percent) or seminar on aspiritual topic (24 percent) if invited.

Why not baptize immediately? Be-cause although repentance, belief, andconfession are the biblical responses tothe gospel and salvation is by gracealone through faith alone in Christalone, there are clearly signs or "fruit"that someone who is truly saved willhave in his or her life. Biblically speak-ing, this is not an option. Hebrews 12:14says there is a “holiness without whichno one will see the Lord.” In otherwords, someone who is truly born againwill grow in godliness over time.

Gospel InspectionGospel InspectionGospel InspectionGospel InspectionGospel InspectionSo, for example, after my child ex-

presses repentance, belief, and confes-sion, instead of bringing them into thebaptistry…1. I continue to pray for clarity of thegospel and fruit in their lives. 2. I continue to teach and explain thegospel to them to make sure they under-stand. 3. I teach them about the biblical fruitof a believer. 4. I watch their lives to see if they areexhibiting any of these fruits. 5. I don't expect my child (or anyoneelse) to become a theologian or a spiritu-ally mature person over night but I dothink we can reasonably expect to see

some life change over time.

What Are The Fruits Of Conversion? Many others have written extensively

about this and the best place to find agood summary of the fruits of a Chris-tian is the book of 1 John. I have listedthe five that I most often look for in myown children. None of us always exhibitthese things as we should but a Chris-tian should show these in their life as aregular habit. 1. Do they show a love for God? 2. Do they show a desire to know andobey God's Word? 3. Do they show a love for others?4. Do they become convicted over sin? 5. Do they show a desire for God'smission?

But How Do I KNOW?But How Do I KNOW?But How Do I KNOW?But How Do I KNOW?But How Do I KNOW?We now come back to the original

question. How do I know if my child issaved?

“I know my child is saved becausethey claim to be saved?” No.

“I know my child is saved becausethey have reached a certain age.” No.

“I know my child is saved becausethey want to be baptized.” No.

“I know my child is saved becausethey are a good person.” No.

“I know my child is saved becausethey know all the answers to Biblequestions.” No.

None of those things give us any kind ofbiblical assurance. These two questionsdo:

1. Has my child expressed heartfeltrepentance of sin, belief in Christ asSavior, and confession of Christ as Lord?(The only way to know is to talk aboutthe gospel and do Gospel Investigation.)

2. Does my child show signs of achanged life? (The only way to know isto do Gospel Inspection.)

My HopeMy HopeMy HopeMy HopeMy HopeI'm still working through these things

and I know there are more questions tobe considered, but I hope some of thismay help parents, pastors, and otherswho deal with children or youth. Pleaseconsider taking more time to discussthe gospel and the biblical responseswith children in your home or church.Ultimately, my desire is that we asadults will help guide our children to-ward Christ in such a way that theywould know Him, love Him, and obeyHim forever!

If we really love Jesus, we will wantto follow him as our Great Shepherd andleader. The Bible teaches that Jesus hasgiven certain men in each local churcha special stewardship to keep watchover souls on his behalf. We call thempastors. The word pastor means “shep-herd.”

Without joining and participating ina local church, you miss out on thebiblical leadership designed for you.How can you expect a pastor to noticeyour spiritual need if you are never atchurch to be noticed? And if you neverjoin a church, whom do you expect willtake responsibility for shepherding youor caring for your needs?

Hebrews 10:25 instructs us not toneglect meeting together, but instead toencourage one another. Meeting togetherin community as a local church is theprimary place where believers encour-age one another. Feeling lonely? Suffer-

ing from depression? Facing difficultcircumstances or challenges? You’renot alone! Just as you need the encour-agement of other believers in your life, they need your support in their lives aswell! Don’t neglect to meet together oryou’ll neglect God’s plan for encourage-ment in your life!

Just before the Hebrew writer warnsagainst neglecting to meet together, hecalls us to “consider how to stir up oneanother to love and good works…” (He-brews 10:24). Every believer is called to“love one another” (John 13:34) and iscreated to “do good works” (Ephesians2:11). Simultaneously, every believeris tempted to love self and to performself-serving works. The church is one ofGod’s tools for stirring up our hearts tohonor God rather than exalt ourselves. The mutual edification and opportuni-ties afforded among the congregationhelp individuals overcome temptationand serve together.

When we serve together, it is lesstempting for an individual to exalt him-self/herself for the good works performed.Further, working side-by-side promotesunity and fellowship among the congre-gation.

In Matthew chapter 8, Jesus pre-scribes steps for a believer to resolve anoffense. After going to a brother andtaking witnesses, if the brother stillhasn’t repented, Jesus says to take it tothe church. Of course, this necessitatesbeing an active member of a local church. The church provides accountability forthe offender while providing aid andsupport for the offended.

To whom will the abandoned wifeturn for support? Who will go after thewandering father and call him back tofaithfulness? Where will the brokenfamily find help in healing?

Community organizations, charities, sports leagues, and recreation groupsare great, but Jesus didn’t give his lifefor them.

Jesus died for the church, purchas-ing her with his blood. Even still, he isbuilding his church and the gates ofHell will not prevail against it! All otherinstitutions, governments, properties, and possessions will pass away – but theChurch belongs to Christ forever!

The Church’s one foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation By water and the Word:From heav’n He came and sought her To be His holy Bride; With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died.

Six Reasonsfrom page 1

When it comes to church invitations,a personal touch works better than asales pitch.

More than half (55 percent) of un-churched Americans say a personalinvitation from a family member wouldbe effective in getting them to visit achurch. Other methods, such as achurch member knocking on the door(21 percent), a TV commercial (23 per-cent), postcard (23 percent) or Facebookad (18 percent), are less effective.

Little interest in life after deathLittle interest in life after deathLittle interest in life after deathLittle interest in life after deathLittle interest in life after deathResearchers also asked unchurched

Americans about the big questions oflife.

About 7 in 10 agree there's an ulti-mate plan and purpose for every person. One in 5 (19 percent) disagrees. One in9 (11 percent) isn't sure.

Nearly 6 in 10 (57 percent) say it'simportant for them to find their deeperpurpose in life. A third disagree (31percent), while 1 in 9 (12 percent) isn'tsure.

Few wonder, at least on a regularbasis, if they'll go to heaven when theydie. Just under half (43 percent) saythey never ponder that question. One in

5 (20 percent) isn't sure the last timethat question came to mind. Three in 10(29 percent) say they ask themselvesthat question on at least a monthlybasis.

This lack of interest in the afterlifecan pose a problem for Christians whowant to share their faith, McConnellsaid. Many have been trained to askquestions like, "If you died tonight, would you go to heaven?"

That tactic might not be as effectivetoday, McConnell said.

"If the only benefit of being a Chris-tian is that you get to go to heaven, mostunchurched people don't care,"McConnell said. "It can't be the onlyway of talking about faith."

Instead, McConnell suggested thosewho want to share their faith talk abouthow their relationship with Jesus af-fects them in day-to-day life and discussthe benefits of being part of a church. And be proactive, he said.

"Don't wait for unchurched people tobring up the topic of faith," he said. "It'sprobably not going to happen."
