BSS: Shivaji, what do you think was the turning point of your career?  

Shivaji:  I think the turning point in my career was leaving my hometown which brought more responsibility. My moving into a quality role was the other important decision which changed my professional life.

BSS: You have undergone Black Belt training from Benchmark. How was your experience?

Shivaji: I attended Benchmark Six Sigma Black Belt in September 2008. I found it to be1.       Well Structured 2.       Had a lot of Illustrations 3.       Good number of working examples4.       Concepts were nicely elaborated. 5.       Flow of phases was linked very well. Well maintained continuity BSS: Should students go for Green Belt during their MBA? Shivaji: Definitely, Six Sigma can bridge the gap between theory and practice. Operations Research and TQM taught during MBA do not make sense from practical perspective. Green Belt is more about business sense. Students need to have real business thinking.

BSS:     How has Six Sigma impacted your personal and professional life? Shirshendu: Six Sigma as a subject has taught me to work with measurability everywhere. It has helped me bring in better focus and prioritization. I have recently published papers on Six Sigma in journals (like International Journal of Industrial Textile, International Journal of Six Sigma and Competitive Advantage) and this has been an immensely satisfying experience. I am doing more research and you can see some more high value papers in coming period.

BSS:     What kind of Six Sigma projects have you been doing?Shirshendu:  I carried out a project in 2008 which was recognized as good project within TATA group and we got the recognisition for the same on 4th  March 2009. This project focused on reducing defect generation in e-learning business. The project drastically brings down the, defects level and subsequently the level of rework  percentage also reduced

VK: What importance do you assign to Six Sigma with regard to organizational success? MP:  Honestly I would say that Six Sigma is the foremost breakthrough Management philosophy that came up in the last century. It is the way business should be done. It is the most comprehensive end to end Business Strategy that I have come across in my career. It's a scientific approach that ensures a strong linkage with the organization's business results. Any organization that wants to consistent success should make Six Sigma as an integral part of its DNA.

VK: How has Six Sigma experience shaped your career? MP:  Six Sigma has been the best thing that happened to me in my career. What does a person want from his work life: Variety of assignments, international exposure, global recognition, fast growth, a feeling of satisfaction at the end of day's work, a feeling that one is helping individuals/organizations to improve. I have got all this in my career after getting exposed to Six Sigma. One thing I always wanted from my work life was an opportunity to see all business functions and how do different industries function. During my MBA days I used to wonder will there by any such skill which would help me in doing this.  Six Sigma gave me that one skill that I wanted. It shaped by thinking, it made me do lead and complete big high impacting projects., it made me make a larger contribution by shaping careers of others by adding Six Sigma to their skill set via workshops/trainings. I sincerely owe a lot in my career to Six Sigma.

BSS:  Vivek, can you share with us some details of your career journey?    Vivek Madan: I got lucky as my first job after Engineering and MBA was an ICICI bank assignment in Six Sigma. After couple of stints in banks, I joined a large multinational BPO and got into an MBB role with seven BBs with qualifications from premier Institutes reporting to me.

BSS:    What kind of benefits have you derived due to Six Sigma knowledge? Vivek Madan: Good number of benefits including the following -• Ability to deliver business benefits brought me closer to leadership sooner than others. • Ability to see complete picture from a business perspective very early. • I was able to interact with leaders of various businesses internally. So access to people and visibility

was always very good. • I was able to learn how processes behave. • Carrying a Six Sigma toolkit with me always helped in day to day professional situations even outside the projects. • Six Sigma language and jargon helped me to get the message across quickly (especially because leadership here knows six sigma terminology very well)

BSS: What kind of Six Sigma projects have you been working on? Debasis Pati:- All my projects have been in IT domain. I have worked on two Green Belt projects where there was direct benefits in term of FTE reduction. Similarly the Black Belt project that I did was focused on service requests which were 9000 in number in the beginning of the project. We achieved reduced count of service requests, reduction in TAT.

BSS: What kind of benefits have you derived due to Six Sigma knowledge? Debasis Pati:- I can say that Six Sigma knowledge has been instrumental in my career growth. It has been a differentiator that has led me to important roles which I would have missed otherwise.

BSS:- What career direction do you see for yourself in the coming period? Debasis Pati:- Six Sigma being a way of life already, I can visualise myself growing well. With professional networking and experience sharing, we can all even faster. To add to this, I am willing to share my learning and experience of 10 years. I strongly feel that it is good to introduce Six Sigma philosophy early among students. It is nice to know that Benchmark has already initiated such programs.

Organizations where he used Six Sigma: e-Funds, Motilal Oswal, Using it as Music Director as well.

BSS:   How has Six Sigma shaped your career? Vidhyadhar Bhave: I got my first Six Sigma exposure when I was in BPO ops role. It has had been the single most influencing factor in my career. In addition to the statistics part (which I had some exposure even before Six Sigma), the soft elements - the project approach, the approval mechanism, involving people to get acceptable and powerful decisions; all are wonderful aspects.

BSS:   What kind of Six Sigma projects have you worked on? Do you still use Six Sigma? Vidhyadhar Bhave: At e-funds, I was part of a team that did integration of three processes using Six Sigma. At Motilal Oswal, bringing down the median TAT of first transaction for new users from 12 days to 5 days. These are the two good ones among many that I mentored and led. You may be surprised to know that I still use Six Sigma as a Music Director. Converting VoC into CTQ using QFD is one approach I can share with you. When a client asks for music, I need to know the type of song in their language. I convert it into CTQ's that my people can relate to. QFD framework makes things easy. We know what to ask and how to convert it into our language

BSS:-   What direction do you see for yourself in the coming period? Vidhyadhar Bhave: I wish conduct Six Sigma training and consulting assignments as an outside consultant along with my music direction. I would like to help small industry owners realize the benefits.

Organizations where he used Six Sigma: Abhishek Industries (No 2 Textile company in India and 5th in the World)

BSS:       What kind of benefits have you derived due to Six Sigma knowledge? Rakesh Sethi: A systematic analysis mechanism like Six Sigma is a must. System development is good for employees as well as companies. DMAIC makes it easy to communicate with senior management and provides a structured approach.

BSS:       You have undergone Black Belt training from Benchmark. How was your experience? Rakesh Sethi: It was a very good learning experience. On Six Sigma front, we have been working on three focus areas which are 1.    Yield improvement - The yield which was 89-90% initially is now up 97.26%. Increase in yield by 1% saves close to 55 lacs for the company. 2.    New product development - We have focussed on eliminating production problems early (during sampling itself). The feasibility studies are now done in advance. Capacity and technical requirements for an order are understood in advance. This has eliminated air shipments which had a cost of Rs. 7-8 Crores every year. 3.    System and physical balancing - The data in the SAP system needs to match with physical data.
