EDWARD DE BONOEdward de Bono (born 19
May 1933, in Malta) is a physician, author, inventor, and consultant. He is known as the originator of the term lateral thinking, wrote a best selling book Six Thinking Hats and is a proponent of the deliberate teaching of thinking as a subject in schools.

SIX THINKING HATSThe de Bono Hats
system (also known
as “Six Thinking
Hats”) is a thinking
tool for group
discussion and
individual thinking.

Continued….Combined with the idea of parallel thinking
which is associated with it, it provides a
means for groups to think together more
effectively, and a means to plan thinking
processes in a detailed and cohesive way.

UNDERLYING PRINCIPLESThe premise of the method is that the human
brain thinks in a number of distinct ways
which can be identified, deliberately accessed
and hence planned for use in a structured
way allowing one to develop strategies for
thinking about particular issues.
![Page 6: Six Thinking Hats 2630 B](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022082808/555d9969d8b42a45788b4b9c/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Dr de Bono identifies five distinct states in
which the brain can be "sensitised". In each
of these states the brain will identify and
bring into conscious thought certain aspects
of issues being considered (e.g. gut instinct,
pessimistic judgment, neutral facts).
