UALBANY FINISHES NON-LEAGUE PLAY AT MARQUETTE INVITATIONALThe UAlbany volleyball team will compete in one more in-season tournament before the start of America East play, heading to Milwaukee to play three matches in the Marquette Invitational, featuring four teams with winning records.

UAlbany plays in the invitational’s opening match, taking on IUPUI on September 18th at 5 p.m. ET at the Al McGuire Center. The next day, the Great Danes play tournament host Marquette at 1 p.m. ET, then finishes the invitational against Wichita State at 6 p.m. ET.

UAlbany took second place in the Colgate Classic with two wins last weekend, standing at 5-4 overall. IUPUI finished in second in an invite in Illinois with two wins last week, holding a 7-4 record. Marquette lost in two of three matches in Wyoming to have a 6-3 tally. Wichita State is 7-4 overall after going 4-1 in its home invitational last weekend. Marquette and Wichita State are each receiving votes in the AVCA rankings.

UAlbany will play IUPUI, Marquette and Wichita State for the first time in program history. It is also the first time that the UAlbany volleyball team will play in the state of Wisconsin.

UALBANY PICKED TO FINISH SECOND IN AMERICA EASTUAlbany has been predicted to finish second in the America East in the preseason coaches poll, picking up 31 points, including two first-place votes. Reigning America East champion UNH was predicted to finish first with 35 points and five first-place votes. Stony Brook (24), UMBC (23), Binghamton (17), Hartford (11), UMass Lowell (6) rounded out the rest of the poll. Votes were made by the conference’s seven head coaches.

UALBANY PLAYERS CHASING RECORDSTwo UAlbany players are close to adding their names to the record book in blocks. Amanda Dolan stands with 234 total blocks, tied for 10th in program history. Tatum Jungsten is just behind her at 233 for 12th place. Chris Hofer holds the UAlbany record with 597 blocks from 1984-87, while Kamisha Kellam has the DI record with 416 from 2005-08.

Mikala McCauley is currently in the UAlbany record book, stand-ing 7th in program history with 1,835 assists. She is 26 away from 6th. The UAlbany record is 5,049 by Blair Buchanan from 2003-06.

LAST TIME: UALBANY TAKES SECOND IN COLGATE CLASSICEarning victories over Rutgers and host Colgate, UAlbany fin-ished in second place in the Colgate Classic, its second in-sea-son tournament with a 2-1 finish.

Laini Leindecker got named All-Tournament Team a 3rd time, hit-ting .241 with 41 kills and 31 digs. Tatum Jungsten also made the All-Tournament Team with 19 kills, 13 digs and 10 blocks.

TWO PLAYERS EARN AMERICA EAST WEEKLY AWARDSAfter UAlbany’s performance in the Colgate Classic, two Great Danes earned America East weekly honors. Laini Leindecker was named Player of the Week with her two double-doubles, while Mikala McCauley was picked as the Setter of the Week with 100 assists, 20 digs and 14 kills, helping the team hit .232 over the weekend. It is McCauley’s second-straight setter of the week honor.

2015 UALBANY GREAT DANES VOLLEYBALLSCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:IUPUI is the reigning regular season co-champion of the Summit League. The Jaguars are led by 2014 AVCA All-American senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Hickey, who hits .224 with 153 kills, 14 aces and 118 digs. In the middle in 6-foot-3 junior Logan Wall-ing, who has 84 kills and 33 blocks with a .328 hitting percent-age. Senior outside hitter Kelly Wachtel got all-conference honors last year and stands with 80 kills and 22 blocks.

Marquette will play its first home matches of the year in the invitational. Standing with 199 of the team’s 501 kills on the season, redshirt freshman outside hitter Taylor Louis hits .264 with 73 digs. 6-foot-6 middle hitter Jenna Rosenthal, a redshirt freshman is hitting .325 with 70 kills and 42 total blocks. A member of the Preseason All-Big East team, redshirt junior Meghan Niemann is hitting .296 with 81 kills and 29 blocks.

Wichita State was predicted to finish first in the Missouri Val-ley Conference in the preseason poll and holds a victory over ranked Kentucky. 2014 AVCA All-American sophomore middle blocker Abbie Lehman leads the team in numerous categories: .427 hitting percentage, 117 kills and 37 total blocks. Also in the middle is senior Katie Reilly, who is hitting .371 with 92 kills and 16 blocks. The main player on the outside is junior Jody Larson, who has tallied 62 kills and 81 digs.

SHANNON HURLEY TRANSFERS TO UALBANY FROM GREEN BAYThe 2013 Horizon League Rookie of the Year and a member of the 2014 Preseason All-Horizon League Team, Shannon Hurley has transferred from Wisconsin-Green Bay to UAlbany, spend-ing the last spring in the Capital District. In 45 matches played, Hurley finished two seasons with 464 kills and 129 digs for the Phoenix. She will have two eligible seasons to play for the Great Danes.

UALBANY VOLLEYBALL EARNS TOP TEAM GPA IN ATHLETICSThe UAlbany volleyball team earned a 3.44 GPA in the 2014-15 season, the highest GPA among all UAlbany teams during the year. With that GPA, UAlbany was honored by the American Vol-leyball Coaches Association with a Team Academic Award. In ad-dition, Mikala McCauley was the America East’s Elite 18 winner for volleyball.

FEAR THE FRESHMEN:UAlbany brings eight freshmen for the 2015 season, hailing from all across the USA and three different countries. So far in 2015, Nicole Otero has served as the team’s libero, leading UAlbany with 164 digs. Chloe Lamb plays as UAlbany’s right side hitter, leading UAlbany rookies with 35 kills and 19 blocks, while Gabri-elle Hansen plays in the back row with 12 aces and 81 digs.

2015 UALBANY GREAT DANES VOLLEYBALLHEAD COACH MJ ENGSTROM

MJ Engstrom enters her eighth season as head volleyball coach at the University at Albany in 2015.

Engstrom has posted an overall record of 121-87 and 69-15 in America East play over her first six seasons. Her record includes three America East titles and as many NCAA appearances as a head coach. She previously coached Villanova and Nicholls State to NCAA tournament berths.

2014 saw UAlbany return to the America East title match as the Great Danes finished tied for second place in the conference, going 7-5 in the league and 10-17 overall. Viktoriia Stroilo earned her third-consecutive America East Defensive Player of the Year honor after finishing 10th in the NCAA in digs per set, totaling 517 on the year. Laini Leindecker earned All-Conference First Team status, while Stroilo and Amanda Dolan each earned All-Conference Second Team.

Engstrom, a native of St. Paul, Minn., is on the editorial board for the International Journal for Volleyball Research and is a member of the USA Volleyball Sports Medicine and Performance Commission. She was a student-athlete at the University of Minnesota and received a degree in psychology in 2000.

ENGSTROM APPROACHING TOP DI MARK AT UALBANYAt the helm of UAlbany, MJ Engstrom has amassed 126 victo-ries, winning the America East regular season five times and taking the title three times. She was named the America East Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2011. She is just 16 matches away from tying Kelly Sheffield, who has 142 wins at UAlbany, for most DI wins at the school. In her coaching career, Engstrom has taken three different schools, UAlbany, Nicholls State and Villanova, to the NCAA Tournament.

PICKARD, VANDEGRIFT NAMED ASSISTANT COACHESUAlbany will have a couple of new assistant coaches for the 2015 season. Joining the team is Josh Pickard, who will serve as the first assistant after spending the last three years at Montana State. Earning a promotion to assistant coach is Traci Vandegrift, a 2012 UAlbany alum who spent the last two years as the team’s graduate assistant manager.

Another UAlbany alum earned a new coaching job for the 2015 season. Former Great Dane setter and assistant coach Brooke Stanley was named the head coach of Converse College in South Carolina.

TIME ZONE DANESUAlbany sports players from all four time zones in the contigu-ous United States. With seven from the USA in the Eastern Time Zone, Illinois native Amanda Dolan is from the Central Time Zone, Dominique Fisher from Colorado and Lyndsey Weiler from Arizona inhabit the Mountain Time Zone while the team’s Califor-nia players, Tatum Jungsten, Emily Lopes and Akuabata Okenwa, live in the Pacific Time Zone.

BLAIR BUCHANAN INDUCTED IN UALBANY ATHLETICS HALL OF FAMEThe all-time leader in assists in program history, Blair Buchanan has been inducted into the UAlbany Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2015. Playing from 2003-06, Buchanan finished with 5,049 assists and 1,082 digs, standing as one of two UAlbany players in the top-10 all-time in program history in those categories. The three-time America East All-Conference First Team setter led UAlbany to its first pair of conference tour-nament titles in 2004 and 2006.

2014 IN REVIEWAfter defeating Boston College and UC Riverside in non-confer-ence play, UAlbany started the season 4-1 to sit in first-place, eventually finishing tied for second place at 7-5 in the league. As the 3-seed, UAlany defeated 2-seed Binghamton in four sets in the America East Tournament to earn a title berth against host New Hampshire. Despite taking set two, UAlbany fell to UNH in four sets to get the league’s runner-up trophy.
