Skating@Life, part of the Centrefor Life, is an open air ice rinkbased in the heart of Newcastleupon Tyne just outside the Life Science Centre. Located next toNewcastle’s Central Station,it has quickly become an integralpart of NewcastleGateshead’sflourishing Winter Festival attracting all sectors of the market from school and groupvisits to corporate entertaining.

Skating@Life is now in its twelfth year, and is a well established and popular part of the region’s cultural identity.Running for 15 weeks, Skating@Life is one of Europe’slongest running outdoor ice rinks, and this year will open

from Saturday 10th November 2012 until Sunday 24thFebruary 2013. The rink attracts significant media coverage over the entirety of the season and we hold strong links with Metro Radio who help promote therink regularly throughout the skating season.

The rink is situated on Times Square which attracts a significant daily footfall, as well as the 70,000+ skaters and250,000 observers who use the ice rink. Approximately5000 school children also enjoy curriculum linked activitieswithin the Life Science Centre as well as a skating session.

Each year we also host skating lessons run by ITV’s Dancing on Ice star Susie Lipanova and offer a wide range of group and party ice skating packages – to find out more please visit our website life.org.uk

As well as a twirl on the ice, visitors to Life also have the option to visit the Life Science Centre and enjoy our new exhibition the Curiosity Zone and new 4D Motion Ride. TheCuriosity Zone is 100% hands on and designed to bringout your inner scientist and the 4D Motion Ride is a pulseracing, action packed adventure where visitors will feel everytwist and turn as they hurtle through the landscape on screen.

Life’s mission

Opened in 2000 on a derelict 10-acre site to the west of Newcastle Central Station, the Centre for Lifeis one of the most successful of the country’s 14 landmark projects founded to mark the new millennium.

Although pioneering research takes place here, most members of the public will know it as the home of the Life Science Centre, an award-winning visitor attraction exploring science through fun, hands-onexhibitions and events. Skating@Life, the outdoor ice rink that takes over Times Square for 15 weeks of the year, is an increasingly popular part of the Life ‘mix’.

Attracting over 220,000 visitors each year, the Centre delivers a diverse science communicationprogramme. Features include live science shows in the Science Theatre; interactive exhibitions suchas Human Life, comparing our ancestors’ world with our own, the Planetarium, showing a range of immersive films projected onto a domed ceiling; hands-on science workshops and demonstrationswith energetic Science Explainers; and the 4D Motion Ride, offering an exhilarating excursionaboard a motion simulator.

In addition, we run a series of events and activities for adults and we are the lead partner in NewcastleScienceFest.

Life is also the largest provider of formal taught science workshops in Europe, providing over 40,000educational experiences to school students every year.
