The Business Chamber of Phalaborwa recently had a public presentation discussing marketing features and the future of the town.

James Daniels, manager of the business development unit of SANParks informed the group of local business people that approximately R25million will be invested in the town in developing the new Wild Activity Hub on a planned 4 hectares of ground just inside the Phalaborwa Gate of Kruger National Park.

“The idea is not to be in competition

with the accommodation already available in town, but rather to create a centre of activities that will draw tourists to town” says Daniels. Detail planning should be done by the end of the year, with the aim of starting early 2016 with this exciting development. To add to the excitement of the proposed development, Gustav Rischmuller of Angelcy Brand Messengers discussed steps towards making the town marketable and brand it as an amazing tourist destination. Dr Emil Notnagel, Executive Director: Economic Development, Kubwa Group

claims there needs to be an understanding as to what the community maturity level and capacity is and then to work together towards a common vision using very specifi c methodologies. “We need fewer projects which are implemented, perhaps two to three sustainable projects annually” Notnagel says. One main message of the presentation was clear that there needs to be a new approach to local economic development. It is not the role of municipalities to implement projects but rather to create the environment in which projects can fl ourish. Local

government and every important role player need to be in partnership for projects to be sustainable. To end off the presentation, Tony Cawood highlighted his initiative ‘Die Hitte Fees’ as the next project to watch, with a three year commitment from sponsors it promises to tick all the boxes for uplifting the community and driving tourism. Charmaine Nxumalo, head of Rixaka production based in Namakgale stated after the presentation: “This was defi nitely informative and I am very excited to be part of this Hub project that will uplift the community”

MARRIED: Meridian college would like to congratulatetheir Grade 6 teacher Wilmarie who got married to Marnitz this past holiday. ‘We wish her all the best as she starts the new term as Mrs Botha,’ said Hannes Faber.

SNAKE: Zian Van Den Bergh, a snake catcher with help from Nico Mathebula took the snake out of the house, where it gave Nsuku a shock of his life at Lulekani recently.

A young man got a shock of his life when a 2.8 metre long python accosted his home at around 03:00 in the morning at Lulekani recently.

Nsuku Phakula says he was sleeping when he heard a sound of a plate breaking. At fi rst he thought it was criminals breaking in, and then he heard a second plate falling on the fl oor.

His suspicion was aroused when he heard things falling on the ground. It turns out that it was African Rock Python that had come into the house uninvited; it coiled itself into a washing basin in the kitchen.

‘I went to the kitchen with a torch, I found the snake in the basin but it didn’t fi t because it was too big, I pointed my torch to different directions and realised that its concentrating on the torch then I was able to escape,’ said Phakula.

He said he was in shock for 15

minutes, he could not move. ‘I took a broom and switched

on the main switch because it was down, so when the snake saw the light, it was powerless and moved behind the fridge where it sought refuge,’ added Phakula.

In the meantime help was summoned and the snake was eventually taken by a snake catcher. Zian Van Den Bergh, the snake catcher said the snake has dangerous bites but it’s not venomous.

‘I belong the herpetological society of Greater Ba Phalaborwa, I have been a given a permit to transport snakes, I have relocated the python at a private game reserve around,’ said Van Den Bergh.

Residents can call Zian Van Den Bergh, should they have a problem with snakes. Contact details; 083 525 2352.

Dan Ndlovu who is only 30 years old owns a civil and construction company, with an employment of 14 people from Shutter-hand, Bricklayers, Steel Fixers, Plumbers and Tilers.

Dan named his company after his Father Jankwana Ndlovu.

He believes in having a plan in life and work hard to achieve after the goals that he sets out to achieve.

He had a plan to become an entrepreneur and not an employee. He studied Business Management at Mopani FET Collage in Phalaborwa, and gained some experience during his employment at Sir Val Duncan and the Post Offi ce.

He partnered with his brother Benjamin Ndlovu and registered Jankwana Trading cc in 2008 and started operating in 2010.

He said that his dream is to expand and have his own establishment with adequate equipment, additional staff and broaden his knowledge and skills to be able to provide different Civil and Construction services.

His fi rst tender was with Foskor Ltd where he constructed a new two room building for Mashishimale Community Crèche.

He continued to take on small tenders to establish his name and position his company in the civil and construction business.

Jankwana Trading cc was awarded with a tender to construction the Growth offi ce foundation after having satisfi ed the requirement as per Palabora’s Procurement Process and requirements.

Gerry Scala, Civil Supervisor from Read Swatman & Voight SA (Pty) Ltd, has been working closely with the Jankwana and became a mentor.

Gerry said that he has personally become fond of the team as they have demonstrated the ability to do the job, within the prescribed scope of work.

He further said that, with a small team of nine personnel on site, they followed the necessary safety procedures and carried out the work with such confi dence.

Jankwana was selected as one of the benefi ciaries of the Palabora Copper’s Supplier Development Programme (SDP) being facilitated by the Palabora Foundation.

The SDP Programme is aimed at building up the capacity and capability of local companies so that they qualify as suppliers for the mine and other big companies in the area thus contributing towards developing the local economy and build wealth in the area.

Ndlovu said that through the SDP programme, his confi dence grew even more as he is now able to challenge himself to tender to jobs that are over what he used to tender for in the past.

‘I am happy that we have a company that supports the dreams of small businesses in the area. Through these programmes and the confi dence that they demonstrate, we will be able to grow our businesses and become employers of tomorrow,’ said Ndlovu.

LOCAL BUSINESS: Jankwana Trading CC employed 14 local people for bricklaying, ling, plumbing and other civil construc on work.

Bushveld Terrace Hotel, located on the doorstep of the Kruger National Park, Phalaborwa gate hosted a spectacular evening of beautiful classical music. The evening was off to a great start with guests sampling Rhino Tears wine in the tranquil setting of the hotel’s pool area. Musical group, Sunset Serenade Ensemble, en route to their annual performance in the Kruger National Park, entertained the classical music lovers of Phalaborwa with a complete fi ddler fest. Away from the rush and noise of town, this event proved that Bushveld Terrace Hotel is able set the mood for a romantic getaway followed by fi ne dining at the Hat and Creek restaurant next door. JJ Meiring, visiting from Cape Town described the performance as delightful and added: “who knew you could fi nd something like this in the middle of nowhere”. Local businessman Len Booysen added: “I saw the group performing in the KNP and just had to see them again, it was a beautiful performance”. About 150 guests attended the performance at the Bushveld Terrace

Hotel of which many enjoyed a set menu afterwards at the Hat and Creek. Dave Turner, Managing Director of Bushveld Terrace Hotel says: “we wanted to test the Phalaborwa market to see how they would receive a classical evening and we are quite happy with the turnout, we might even consider making this an annual event.” The wine served before and during the performance, is part of a fundraising initiative against rhino poaching. The idea for the wine came about when Mt Vernon MD, John Hooper, met with John Turner, Chairman of the SANParks Honorary Rangers Conservation Services Unit; and Andre Nel, owner of The Hat and Creek restaurants in Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa. After spending a couple of days with the fi eld rangers at the Kruger Wilderness Experience bush camp in the Kruger National Park, the idea for a wine that could raise money for anti-poaching efforts was developed. To date this initiative has paid over a total amount of R265 000 toward rhino conservation.

He adds: “I am humbled by Pastor SM Aphane and his church, HOWI, who sent me to donate groceries to JCI community as these people are destitute and this can happen to anyone”

The school is very grateful towards their generous donors which include Ackermans, Phalaborwa Rotary club, and individuals who feel the need to contribute. The school also conveys its gratitude towards Heqlen Mica and Cash Build who recently donated building materials worth R12 000. Sambo adds: “ I would also like to thank all the staff who ran a 10 year race with me, they embraced this charitable vision and we managed to put smiles on destitute faces in all sorts of communities and as Schiettocht School we add our voice to those who say ‘no’ to xenophobia.”

The school welcomes any donations from the community and can be contacted at 083 517 4770 / 074 076 5366 / 082 336 6975.
