On Monday 20 August our school council chair, Ms Helen Adam and I, presented our narrative to the Independent Public School (IPS) facilitators. We spoke about the academic and social and emotional programs being delivered at Nollamara Primary, the school Business Plan 2018-2020, the cultural diversity of our students and the positive engagements the school has with parents, families and our local community. We will know by the end of September if Nollamara Primary will be joining the hundreds of other schools across the state that have IPS status. Watch this space for more information!
Faction Carnival - Friday 31 August 2018Mr Marcus Hall, staff and students have been training hard over the past term and everyone is excited and ready to participate in all the events planned for the carnival on Friday. Could parents please ensure their children are dressed in their faction colour. Please also remember to provide your child with a hat, sunscreen, a warm jacket and lunch.
The program for the day has been emailed to families and additional copies can be collected from the front office if you would like to see when your child is participating in an event. Unfortunately, the canteen will not be able to prepare lunch for the carnival but a coffee van has been organised for the day. We look forward to seeing as many parents and families as possible.

Skype in the classroomEarlier this term, Rooms 13, 10 and 2 headed to Room 13 for a special interview. But, it wasn’t any old interview, it was a VIRTUAL EXCURSION, through Skype. A Visual Communications coordinator at John Curtin Gallery, Brad Coleman, introduced us to the artwork created by some children of the Stolen Generation as well as sharing some stories about the Stolen Generations.
The artwork was beautifully created with
silhouette trees, sparkling rivers, bright suns and
gorgeous sunsets-all only made with chalk! It all started with Mr White
one day…
Examples of the art from the Carrolup Collection
One day Mr White and his class were just starting the day. The children were all very quiet and shy, but Mr White wanted to change that-so he did. He asked all the children to go outside as they were going on a bushwalk. He asked them to remember the details of their environment as when they went back to the classroom they would have to then draw a landscape in their books. It turned out that the children were all very talented and had amazing drawing skills. The children started to like Mr White as he was very friendly, and socialised a lot more with their peers. Every week after that they would draw the landscape and go on a bushwalk at least once.
After a year or two the kids started getting a lot of attention and the government got furious at this and tried shutting the school down. These first attempts were unsuccessful.
About six months later, an old lady came to Carrolup from England, to meet these kids. She had a great and strong connection between them and their peers. She was amazed when she saw the kids drawing. So she started getting the kids some oil paints and crayons.
The kids’ drawings and paintings started to look even more realistic and colourful. After that she headed back to England on a boat, which took about 6 months, and she begun selling their artwork there and made a fortune, but then a scammer scammed her out of the money (her and the profits of the art) by becoming her husband.
After a few years, the school was shut down and Mr and Mrs White died in a car crash, they will always be remembered for what they have done for these young members of the Stolen Generation.
Today, the law that affected the Stolen Generation has changed. After that Brad explained a bit of the kids drawing and answering some questions. He started going in depth of the art that the kids drew. After that we waved goodbye to Brad and he waved back to us and that was our Skype conversation! What an afternoon!

Master Chef
Mrs Forrington's Year 4/5 students have been looking forward to the annual Master Chef competition all year!
This event was held on Thursday 21 August at school, with judging conducted by Ms Michele, Mr Shortill, Ms Carter, Ms Jody and Ms Hammond.
The students had spent literacy lessons planning their recipe, sourcing ingredients and preparing to make their selected food item, something healthy to eat for breakfast.
Many creative breakfast recipes were made including pancakes, waffles, fruit salads, bacon and eggs and tasty drinks.
Nollamara Primary would like to thank staff from the Nollamara IGA for their kind donations of a variety of ingredients for the students. Without their generosity and the enthusiasm of Mrs Forrington and Ms Sharon, special experiences at our school couldn't be possible.
Nollamara Primary celebrates Book Week "Find your treasure!'Nollamara Primary staff and students celebrated their love of books this week with a parade and a presentation by Koob Story Keeper.Pirate Pete (Mr Cooper) made a guest appearance, telling jokes which were pretty awful but kept all entertained.Costumes included pirates, Robin Hood, Little Red Riding Hood, a green sheep, Alice in Wonderland and many other creative characters.A sincere thank you to families for joining in this event and supporting your child to wear a costume. LEARNING THE SKILL OF CALMING DOWN
WE ARE HERE TO HELP!
We have all felt overwhelmed at times, it’s definitely a part of being human. Learning to manage these feelings is one of the key skills we learn in childhood from the adults around us, and a topic I often talk to students about. I explain that when we are feeling very emotional, through stress, shock, anger, sadness, or fear (to name a few!), our body pumps out stress hormones that stop us thinking clearly, and we feel emotionally overwhelmed. Here’s two techniques that can make a difference:
1) Positive self-talk – such as “I’m going to be ok” or “I am safe”
2) Take three slow deep breaths
While these things are very simple, they are effective in sending a message to the body to stop pumping adrenaline, and to turn off the brain’s inbuilt alarm system. This helps you to calm down and think in a more balanced way. Try it, it works!!
