Making An Experiment

Monitoring 16 young&healthy adults

In a sealed room-researchers measuring energy used (O2 CO2)

Everyone: first 3 days-sleeping 9 hours&eating meals with necessary calories

Than, split into 2 groups: 1-5 days with 5 hours sleep, 2-5 days with 9 hours sleep

Page 5: Sleeping:How Does It Affect Eating?

Making An Experiment Continued

Both groups: large meals, snack throughout the day (fruit-potato chips)

Switched

5 hours: 5% more energy burned

5 hours: consumed 6% more calories

5 hours: eat smaller breakfast, eat a lot after-dinner snacks

Evening snacks-more than an individual meal

Adds to evidence: Overeating at night=weight gain
