Oil circulation pump for the valves rocker arms and the timing system.

Introduction

Congratulations for having purchased this craftmanship product, built with precision ,care to details and very high quality. This engine will provide many hours of service and great performance if the instructions in this manual are followed. This engine is the result of 10 years of study and research, and even though it’s a relatively young project has nothing less than the well known engines largely sold on the market. The timing system, is a new concept and design, and has been designed so as to avoid gyroscopic effects caused by the inertial masses that move at high r.p.m. The materials used have been selected for the specific application. The heads and the cylinders are machined from a solid piece on CNC machines, using specific materials in order to minimize weight and provide high reliability even in critical conditions. A glow driver system, that is mixed to the throttle servo channel, is available so to supply a consistent current flow to the glow plugs . This unit can supply current on demand to the glow plugs once the engine is running to save the current draw. This system provides a steady and reliable idle in flight at a very low rpm and maximum rpm at full throttle. Running the engine on the test bench with the glow driver on for about ¼ on the low end and the last ¼ on the high end will provide a noticeable rpm increase of about 1000/1200 rpm,

Test bench mounting and safety operations

Build an appropriate test bench with a centered hole where the motor mount is attached . The hole has to be at least 8cm to allow the passage of the intake pipes and the throttle pushrod/wire. The whole system must be attached firmly to a work table as shown in the picture below.

Secure the motor mount with the bolts supplied making sure everything is tightened. Position the fuel thank behind the engine at carburator level. Connect the fuel line to the carburator and the pressure line to the pressure fitting located on the crankcase lower left side. (If you notice that the engine richens up disconnect the pressure line and close with a plug the pressure fitting. This may be related to specific local conditions such as altitude, air humidity etc.) In some cases , if aerobatic manuvers have to be performed , a pressure pump may be required. Unscrew the prop nuts and install the propeller as per recommended size. Balancing the propeller is a must. SLEngines is not responsible for damages to internal parts of the engine caused by an unbalanced propeller. Lock the propeller in place with the plate, nut and locknut. Make sure is well secured to the crankshaft.

Connect all the wiring cables to each glow plug routing them through the center hole located behind the holding crankcase and connect the earth cable to one of the bolts of the motor mount. The terminal clamp of the glow plugs cables must be connected to an on/off switch of at least 16 Amps. Keep in mind that each plug uses around 4 Amps and to test run the engine on the bench at least 28 Amps are needed(We Recommend 6 batteries of 2V 5A each) with at least a 2,5mm diameter cable to connect the batteries in series with each other.

Simple wiring without glow driver module.

A glow driver module to be installed on the plane is available. The unit is controlled by the receiver on the plane connected to the throttle servo, a LiPo 7,4V 2100 ma battery pack is needed (see picture below , optional)

If the glow driver unit is used you must follow the instructions that come with the unit. If the engine is run on the bench ,connect the throttle pushrod with a clevis to the carburator and the other end to a small lever located in the back, this will let you adjust the gas from the backside in a safe way. Fill up the fuel thank, open the throttle, put a finger on the carburator intake opening, which is located in the back of the engine, and turn the propeller counterclockwise at least 6 turns for the first time. Then you can turn it just twice. This way the fuel will reach the cylinders. Power up the glow plugs by turning the switch on and flip the propeller counterclockwise with a consistent hit, use a protection glove. The engine will start right away. Be careful to the propeller recoil if you are not consistent in the movement and the engine does not start. Our engines come with some preliminary break in time and therefore don’t require a starter to be turned on. A starter may be required to start it during the winter when climate conditions are different. Once the engine is running let it run on idle so as to warm up all the moving parts and adjust the idle , if necessary, through the serrated round drum on the carburator. When the engine is warm and in temperature, about two minutes later, open the throttle gradually and increase rpm , adjust the needle valve if needed. Even though the needle valve is set and adjusted at the factory different climate conditions may require some readjustment.

These pictures show how to do the electrical wiring

Maintenance Adjust the valve clearance by removing the rocker covers first , then insert a 0.8 mm feeler gauge in between the valve head and the rocker arm. Unscrew the locknut and adjust the specific bolt on the rocker arm , make sure you thighten the locknut after you have finished the adjustment. This operation has to be done every 10 hours of running. If the engine is not used for any time, or if the rockers look dry ( open up a rocker cover to inspect ) then inject (through the screw cap located on the front top side of the crankcase), 3 cc of COOL POWER synthetic oil or similar and turn the engine by hand few times. The same has to be done for each cylinder but with 0,5cc in each cylinder through the plug opening. Turn the engine about 10 turns so to let the oil set in the cylinders. This engine is a wet sump type, but does not have an oil reservoir to store the oil. It simply uses the collected and added oil that is contained in the crankase, then uses the oil pump to circulate the oil throughout the engine. that is why it is important to keep topping up the crankase oil. Excess oil will not do any harm. For storage brush the engine with oil (use a soft delicate brush), wrap it in a nylon cover and store it in a dry place.

SLE Radial engines, seven cylinders 4-stroke, 90cc. The SL Engines motor is made by craftsman in Italy and is the only 90cc 7-

cylinder radial engine currently on the market. The engine is built with Italian craftsmanship and precision, for performance, reliability and power. No shortcuts were taken to produce this amazing piece of workmanship. It includes separate lubrication for the camshaft, not from the fuel. The look is very close to the most famous radial engines used in the past on real airplanes. The 90cc Glow version produces around 9,5-10 Hp when running at maximum power. The max. rpm varies from 6700 rpm to 3400 rpm when using high pitch and large diameter propellers. The idle rpm is from 800 rpm to 1200 rpm. When running at the min. of 800 rpm it’s necessary to use an “on board” glow driver system or an electronic glow driver with a li-po battery to supply a consistent current to the glow plugs improve reliability. The camshaft system uses a large diameter drum to ensure a smoother running cycle. Acceleration from low to high RPM is very smooth and controllable - similar to a 2 stroke engine. Special materials and metal alloys were used for

the construction, such as ergal, titanium, NCD steel, etc. and were chosen for the application. Thermal treatments and coatings were used for longevity. The rotary cams were nitrite treated to avoid wear. A lubricating pump works via crankcase pressure to lubricate the buckets that hold the rocker arms and push-rods. Push-Rods covers are a feature not found on other Radial engines. This allows the oil circulate and provide a constant lubrication to all the moving parts of the engine. Technical data: Displacement: 89.6 cc (12,8 cc per cylinder) Stroke: 23,2 mm Bore: 26,5mm RPM Idle.: 800/1000 RPM max.: 6500/7500 Weight: Including engine mount and radial silencer – 3.9 kg – 8.47 lb for the gas engine 3.2 kg – 7.2 lb for the glow engine Power : 8/10 hp Propeller: 24x6/8/10-26x8-28x6/8-max 30x6/8 RPM per propeller: 24x8/10 7500max 26x6/8/10 6400 suggested rpm 28x6/8 5700/6000 30x6/8 3200/3400 max suggested Fuel consumption: 1,8-2,6 liter/h Kit available soon for conversion to gas - includes electronic CDI plus parts to convert.
