Parish Council News:At the Parish Council meeting in June the following resolutions were made:
• Bev Fernandes was co-opted onto the Parish Council• The revised budget and three-year forecast was agreed• As the Parish Council previously agreed to spend £9,500 from reserves on architect
and surveyors’ fees for the HUB project to go ahead. Members agreed to pay the architects and surveyors directly to enable the Parish Council to reclaim the VAT, therefore making the agreed funds go further.
• Members agreed quotes to install Community Defibrillators outside the Village Shop and Frank Bond Centre. The Clerk will order the units and co-ordinate installation.
• The new advisory group roles were agreed
Next meeting date: Thursday 8th August, 7pm, Church Hall – everyone welcome to attend
Somerset West & Taunton Local Plan consultationThe Strategy team at SWT have started work on the new Local Plan for the new Council area. We are at the very early stages of the process and are preparing to consult on the Statement of Community Involvement between 19 July and 30 September 2019.The Statement of Community Involvement (SCI), sets out how we involve the residents, businesses and others when we look at local development. The SCI shows that we will operate planning in an open, transparent, accessible and inclusive way. Above all, the purpose of the SCI is to bring a sense of ownership locally by actively involving people in decision making.Details of the consultation can be found at: www.somersetwestandtaunton.gov.uk/sci
‘The Importance of being Earnest’For this month’s article I thought it would be nice to tell you about a truly lovely event that took place in our village on Tuesday 9th July at Milligan, the home of Jane and David Gurr.
It was back in January, that I was approached by Taunton Thespians to recommend a new venue for their 2019 Summer Tour, performing ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ and the obvious location for this open-air event was Milligan, in Netherclay.
The Thespians have a long-standing connection with Bishop’s Hull. Not only do many of their members live in the area, they have also performed several times at both the Frank Bond Centre and Bishop’s Hull House. I’m sure many of you will have attended a village event held at Milligan in the past and once again, the Gurrs were kind enough to open their wonderful home and gardens to host this glorious Oscar Wilde comedy.
On a warm summers evening, the walled garden to the side of the house was chosen for its acoustic qualities and intimate feel. It proved to be an ideal ‘theatre’ for the 86 audience members to enjoy their picnics, whilst being thoroughly entertained by some excellent performances from the Thespians.
A percentage of the ticket sales were generously donated to our very own Bishop’s Hull Hub Charity, who also raised additional funds from selling draw tickets and refreshments, including bowls of rather delicious strawberries and cream.
The performance ended around 10pm with well-deserved applause for a superb performance. A beautiful evening in an idyllic setting, with lovely people, fabulous entertainment and a happy ending for Earnest. What more could we have asked for?
I’d like to thanks Jane and David Gurr for being superb hosts, Taunton Thespians for a memorable performance, the Hub volunteers for their hard work and of course, a huge thank you to all those that supported the evening.
John Hunt

Eusebius Quartet comes to Bishop’s HullIt is with great pleasure that Concerts in the West is for the first time bringing one of its visiting groups of professional musicians to Bishop’s Hull. Local resident Catherine Maddocks founded Concerts in the West which is now a small but nationally respected charity promoting the best of younger generation performers. The Eusebius Quartet will perform at St Peter and St Paul Church on Thursday 5th September starting at 7.30pm. They are presenting a programme of music by the so-called ‘Father of the string quartet, the 18th century composer Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven, the composer who through his monumental Opus 132 Quartet transformed the genre and the Sixth and final quartet of the 20th century Hungarian master, Béla Bartók. After first meeting as teenagers The Eusebius players went their own ways while studying music but then reunited in 2015 to form their extraordinary quartet. They are undoubtedly making a name for themselves with their imaginative and communicative performances and have appeared at numerous London venues including Conway Hall, St James’ Piccadilly, the Foundling Museum, Blackheath Halls as well as many venues across the country. As part of their mission, Eusebius has specialised in bringing performances to young people. Tickets at £15 (£5 for students and free for under 12s) can be obtained in advance:
