    SMALL BUSINESS CELEBRATION 22 23 NOVEMBER 2013

    Introduction

    Gold Coast City, often referred to as the Small Business Capital, has a resident

    population of over 500,000 and is now the sixth largest city in Australia. The

    city is located in one of the fastest growing regions in the nation and its

    business and industry base of tourism, construction, and entertainment,

    retailing and service sectors such as health and education has driven the

    region's prosperity in unison with its population's shifts from the southern states.

    However, challenges lie ahead in continuing the rate of economic

    development in the region in terms of jobs growth, education outputs, healthservices, social opportunity and environmental sustainability.

    The Gold Coast is the next development phase of its economic evolution and

    attracting and assisting small business is an essential part of maintaining its

    commercial attractiveness.

    Small Business Association of Australia (SBAA) is also keen to assist business

    owners and entrepreneurs to grow and sustain the pool of smaller

    companies. To this end SBAA works with governments, educational institutions

    and larger businesses to help maintain the prosperity of small business in an

    effort to curb failures and retrenchments.

    Accordingly SBAA will hold an inaugural Celebration of Small Business with

    the support of the Queensland Chamber of Commerce & Industry (QCCI)

    and other organisations at Bond University on the Gold Coast in November

    2013.

    SBAA Patron, Mrs Gina Rinehart has contributed $40,000 to be used in

    recognising individuals and organisations that have materially assisted SME's

    (small and medium enterprises).

    A number of events including an expo, workshops and the first grass roots

    small business conference will be held.

    The event will subsequently become a fixed annual promotion in all our

    mainland States.

    The two day programme will feature;

    An expo on Friday 22 November that will feature the biggest B2Bnetworking event;

    Industry Workshops 22 to 23 November; The Rinehart Gala Dinner Award carrying a single prize of $40,000 Friday

    22 November, AND

    A Small Business Conference 23 November that will include small businessowners, academics, researchers, policy makers.

    Purpose of the Rinehart Award

    The purpose of the Award is to celebrate an enduring and important

    contribution made towards the advancement of small business through the

    development of a product, a service, an educational program, advocacy

    role and/or entrepreneurial activity.

    The Award Prize

    One award only with a cash prize of $40,000 (forty thousand Australian

    dollars) donated by Mrs Gina Rinehart. The prize money may be used for

    whatever purpose at the discretion of the winner.

    Eligibility Criteria

    Nominations can be submitted from an individual, a company, apartnership or a non-profit organisation.

    Nominees for the award will be judged based on theircontributiontowardsthe advancement of the small business sector in Australia.Applications should not be submitted which are based solely on the

    success of an individual business.

    Nominees from any industry sector are eligible.

    Application Process

    Submissions should address one or more of the criteria shown below.Please limit responses to each criteria to 300 words (excluding supporting

    evidence)

    Submissions should be accompanied by supporting evidence fromindividuals and/or organisations that can attest to the validity of the

    information provided. Supporting evidence may include relevant media

    coverage, letters of support, independent testimonials etc. Up to six

    pieces of evidence should be attached.

    The judging panel reserves the right to verify information provided.Award Criteria

    Applicants are required to indicate how they have contributed to the

    advancement of the small business sector through one or more of the

    following:

    Innovation through design of products, services or educational programswhich have improved the way the small business sector operates.

    Developmentof small business friendly initiatives which have improved thecompetitiveness of the small business sector.

    Advocacyfor the small business sector through active involvement inrelevant forums including effective representations to industry bodies and

    government.

    Promotion of the integral role played by the small business sector withinAustralia.

    Leadership through contribution/s to the development of employeesand/or managers across the broad spectrum of small business operations.

    Application Fee

    A non-refundable application fee of $500 (five hundred Australian dollars)

    applies to all applications. Applications will not be considered without priorpayment.
