The role of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is well understood by those that work within large organisations but the nature of the role and its importance to any business owner is not well understood outside this environment.

In large organisations this person is often the CEO’s trusted business advisor and is far more than just an accountant – someone that often reports in to the board, steps in as CEO where necessary, drives initiatives that improve business performance, manages financial risk and ensures that the funding platform is appropriate to support the business moving forward. They are often the individual that understands the business from end to end hence capable of managing the competing priorities of functional budget holders in ensuring the right decisions are made in the best interest of the organisation.

Typically in the SME sector, business owners will look to their public practise chartered accountant to perform this role however the requisite skillset to operate as CFO being internal, commercial,

value-add orientation is different albeit complimentary to the external, technical, compliance nature of the public practise environment. While a few public practitioners successfully traverse the divide most do not, meaning that the business owner is left searching for this skillset from elsewhere.

• Given that typically overheads are lower in an outsourced environment, very competitive pricing can be passed on to customers. Work is normally quoted on an all-inclusive hourly or daily rate so you can easily budget cost and activity can be planned within any financial constraints ;

• Typically an organisation providing this service will provide a quality assurance oversight at no additional cost by a senior member of the team to ensure that the engagement remains on track and is an escalation point should it be needed.

• Finance professionals experienced working for large organisations can diffuse what is relevant for smaller organisations and implement it. Given that most small organisations want to grow, they generally like to work with individuals that are comfortable with scaling up
