The SMART Podium interactive pen display connects to a computer or projector and enables instructors to annotate over visuals, save notes and access websites or applications.

SMART Board interactive whiteboards and displays help instructors make learning a hands-on, visual experience for students. Their touch-sensitive screens and intuitive interfaces make them amazingly easy to use.

The SMART Slate wireless slate lets instructors interact with their SMART Board interactive whiteboard or SMART Podium from anywhere in the room. They can control applications, write notes and highlight information in digital ink.

The SMART Response XE interactive response system features a full QWERTY keyboard on its handheld remotes (or clickers), allowing students to enter complete mathematical and scientific equations in response to an instructor’s impromptu questions or prepared tests.

When you use the SMART Slate wireless slate, you can interact with digital course materials no matter where you are in the room. The SMART Slate enables you to control applications, add notes and highlight information whether you’re at the front of the room, back of the class or beside a student.

Gain mobility in your teachingThe slim design of the SMART Slate allows you to easily carry it as you move around the room, staying connected wirelessly to your computer from up to 32' (10 m) away. the screen. He pauses the video and continues his explanation, circling the clutch disc and drawing arrows. Once Paul is sure everyone has grasped the principles of the clutch mechanism, he clicks the video back to life and the class proceeds.

According to Randy Paul, the introduction of the Sympodium to SAIT Polytechnic’s AST program has revolutionized the way courses are taught. The product, which has now been implemented in both theory and lab classes, enables instructors to deliver course content much more quickly and effectively. As a result, the material can be presented in greater depth, giving graduates a vital edge in the job market.

The Sympodium, in conjunction with a computer, projector, multimedia switch and screen, addresses the main challenges faced in an automotives lab, particularly the logistics. Instructors use the pen tool as a mouse to control peripherals, run videos using SMART Video Player, search websites and write in digital ink over applications on the display screen. When linked to an Elmo magnifier or a digital video camera, the interactive pen display is ideal for presenting and explaining concepts on a large screen. “Before we used this technology, we could only demonstrate to two or three students at a time,” says Paul. Now 20 or even 60 people can clearly see the annotated component. Consequently, a much smaller percentage of each lab is now spent on physically showing students how components work.

Not only are hours of class time saved each week through this efficient approach, but students learn more quickly when concepts are presented and explained

using multimedia. Reinforcing ideas with digital resources, particularly when instructors can manipulate material on the interactive pen display, enables instructors to be more responsive to their students’ needs. When a question arises, instructors can choose from an Internet site, a video or an Adobe Flash file and click on their interactive screen to bring up the most appropriate resource. Or if material from previous discussions or classes needs to be reexamined, teachers can easily refer to it with a touch of the pen tool.

SAIT instructors using the Sympodium then have extra time to concentrate on developing their students’ diagnostic skills. “Because we can do the basics so much faster and in so much more depth, we can get on to the troubleshooting, which is the key to it all,” explains Paul. “Both skill levels and comprehension levels are higher now, particularly in the diagnostic area. Using the Sympodium interactive pen display has increased marks on the lab and shop test by approximately 10 percent.” By enabling instructors to enrich courses with more analytical exercises, the product is contributing to a better overall education for AST students.

In the theory classroom, Paul can use the Sympodium to easily coordinate his digital resources – from PowerPoint software learning modules to Internet sites – and simplify his preparation process. “My prep time is decreased,” says Paul, “but what that means is I still use the same amount of prep time but I do more things – for example, I can prepare extra diagnostic quizzes.” Thanks to SMART’s product, instructors have more hours to concentrate on delivering material in a thoughtful, compelling manner.

AST classes now progress at a vigorous pace, with videos, projected images and diagrams. The new technology products also keep instructors fresh and enthusiastic. “All the things I can do on the Sympodium – the ability to switch between applications, show and expand images, draw on them and highlight on them – keep things moving at a speed that keeps the students’ interest level high,” explains Paul. “And maintaining student interest is crucial for learning. But because I’m teaching in a way that I find quite exciting, I also get enthusiastic about what I’m doing. So it’s rejuvenated my teaching.”

Randy Paul’s enthusiasm is infectious. As more and more SAIT faculty catch on to the AST department’s success with the Sympodium, interest in the product is spreading across the campus. “It’s innovative instruction,” SAIT’s Vice President, Academic, Gordon Nixon, says about the use of SMART products in the AST program. “Now other instructors

from the trades programs are saying to their deans, ‘How do I get one of those?’”

Part of what makes Paul’s success with the product so appealing is the competitive edge it gives his students. “The bottom line,” says Paul, “is that our students will come out with greater understanding of diagnostics, thanks to the Sympodium. If you’re starting off, and you have the experience of someone who’s been in the trade for 10 or 12 months, that’s a huge advantage for the employer and for the individual.” For the students learning the complexities of the clutch in Paul’s lab class, career paths are promising – fueled by technology, dedication and achievement.

SMART Board interactive whiteboards in over 75 classrooms at its central campus in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, and 32 at the west campus in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Servicing 30,000 credit and noncredit students from varied backgrounds with an average age of 27, the college wanted to diversify its teaching methods and improve course offerings to create more flexible learning environments.

Largely as a result of professor demand, the integration of nearly 110 SMART Board interactive whiteboards has happened in little more than five years. In 2000, Hofmann returned from an educational technology conference convinced that she wanted a SMART Board interactive whiteboard. Hofmann was initially given an electronic whiteboard but found it difficult to use. Two semesters later, she was successful in her quest for a SMART Board. “February 2001 … February 14 was the exact day. And it was a sweetheart of a day!” The trend she started hasn’t slowed down since. “By the end of that semester, everybody wanted one…. There is a big difference between electronic whiteboards and SMART Boards,” says Hofmann.

Susan Hauck, Director of Instructional Technology and self-described technology evangelist, notes that the large-scale demands for training on, support with, investment in and integration of SMART Board interactive whiteboards started from the ground up. “Every budget cycle, we go out to the faculty and academic administration in general and ask about their technology needs for the next year. Invariably, each year, the thing that seems to float to the top is that they want more SMART Boards,” she explains.

Montgomery County Community CollegeIntegration of SMART products helps build flexible learning environments

In smart classrooms equipped with PCs, projectors, DVD players and VCRs, the interactive whiteboards and Sympodium [now known as SMART Podium] interactive pen displays help instructors create dynamic learning situations that encourage active student engagement.

When teaching multimodal learning styles in flexible environments, Hofmann videoconferences between the central and west campus and also to a local high school. Students write directly on the interactive whiteboard at one campus and participate in real time. “I can get students who are at the remote site to write, and then students who are face to face can see it. So, it is truly interactive.”

Students share her enthusiasm for the integration of technology products. Richard A. Golden, a math student pursuing an associate of science in business administration degree, says “the college is getting better and better at using the technologies available by designing and structuring classes that make learning the subject easier than ever.” As someone who is also raising a family and working part time, Golden appreciates the flexibility the technology has given him – “the opportunity to further his career ambitions and earn a college degree.”

Math student Kathleen Sapio says the “visual aids are really the key to helping one to understand the more difficult problems, and the study materials that were made available were terrific.” She praises the “strong starting point for the next algebra course and additional math courses” that she developed through the use of integrated technologies.

Whether students learn through distance education or in the traditional classroom, they will find the pedagogy to suit their needs at Montgomery County Community College (MCCC). The college offers open admission to students and prides itself on providing a cutting-edge educational technology environment that will prepare students for the current technology-based workforce. “I think what the college is trying to do is to provide different modalities to address different learning styles,” comments Mathematics Professor Roseanne Hofmann. The SMART Board interactive whiteboards enable professors to offer more streamlined lessons. Using SMART Notebook software, Hofmann and other math professors can write or type in the lengthy problems ahead of time, and recall and revise for future use. “When the students come in, you can just say, here’s the problem, let’s read it and then start to pick it apart, instead of waiting five minutes for the problem to be written on the board,” explains Hofmann. Rather than spending all their time writing notes, students can relax and participate more fully in the class. Class notes are then saved and posted on Blackboard Academic Suite™ or on the professor’s website for students to review.

The SMART Board is compatible with many third-party software packages. Hofmann uses a graphing calculator and supplementary homework packages, such as MyMathLab and Eduspace®. She integrates the SMART

Board and SMART Notebook software with ScreenWatch™, which lets her capture and record the audio, video and notes for the entirety of her lectures for students to review online. New polling systems allow her to quiz and gauge student understanding before moving on to a new topic, and she is testing the new Senteo™

[now known as SMART Response] interactive response system because of its seamless integration with existing products. To equip its new Advanced Technology Center that opens in fall 2008, MCCC also has ordered 13 of the new SMART Board 600i interactive whiteboard systems with integrated projectors, and 2 more 690 series interactive whiteboards.

MCCC’s faculty look to SMART to provide innovative and fully integrated technology products to meet the needs of an ever-growing and changing student population. Both Hofmann and Hauck feel confident

is SMART – the SMART Board interactive whiteboard and Sympodium [now known as SMART Podium] interactive pen display, to be precise. The university has 163 classrooms that are enhanced with SMART products, including 127 that are fully equipped with a Sympodium, a SMART Board interactive whiteboard, Internet access and other technology tools. In fact, given the proliferation of technology-enabled classrooms on the Knoxville campus, Burke believes it would be impossible for a student to get through a course of studies and not be exposed to SMART products.

The first SMART Board interactive whiteboard appeared on campus in 1998, and now, some 10 years later, SMART products are the norm. Burke maintains that it was the inherent flexibility found in this technology that led the university to standardize. He explains, “The reason I supported our standardization on SMART Technologies is that I think giving our instructors the ability to interact with visual materials reinforces the memory of students…. Many learners need that visual.”

When instructors and professors use these SMART products to their fullest potential, students win. Using SMART Notebook software, instructors can organize their lectures, notes, visuals and other materials – by doing so, they become free to concentrate on instruction, capitalize on teachable moments and more readily monitor student response and understanding.

For example, John B. Riley, a professor of agricultural economics, uses the Sympodium to better demonstrate calculations and graphing to his students. “The Sympodium is a great tool to have in the classroom. I make

SMART products enable professors and instructors to easily annotate and mark-up their presentation materials during lectures, a feature they particularly appreciate. Art history instructors, for example, use digital ink to point out specific details on images of paintings or other works of art.

“The SMART Board and the Sympodium allow instructors to use richer media, and that is very important,” explains Burke. “About 50 percent of the instructors I’ve trained seem to be most appreciative of the fact that they now have the ability with the Sympodium to take whatever they’ve done in class, including their in-class annotations, and package and post them to their course website for their students to access at any time.”

This access allows students to review, study or catch up on their own time. Knowing an instructor will be posting lecture notes and presentations frees students from specifically focusing on note taking during their classes and enables them to concentrate on the presentation. They can unreservedly ask questions or take part in discussions.

An ever-increasing focus on student-led presentations has also meant a high level of student support for technology-enabled classrooms. As a result, the University of Tennessee created two practice presentation classrooms where students use the same SMART products as their instructors, preparing presentations

on the very equipment they will encounter in the classroom. Giving students the opportunity to actively hone and sharpen their technology skills makes their transition to the world after college that much easier.

Burke explains, “We try to associate our technology with real-world applications. We’re not doing technology because it’s cool – we’re doing it because it helps our students and staff communicate in the 21st century. A lot of our focus is on us supporting the tools that allow better communication.”

That focus is paying off for the University of Tennessee. It was ranked in Kaplan Publishing’s latest guide to colleges as one of the nation’s top 25 cutting-edge schools. Additionally, in its 2008 America’s Best Colleges ranking, the U.S. News and World Report placed the school in the top 30 percent of national public universities.

“Technology provides us with a whole tool set of rich media elements that we would not otherwise have. We believe that visual imagery enhances learning and supports retention. So, the visual aspects of SMART technology products are very important for reaching our students with different learning styles,” says Burke. He adds, “The communicative aspects of technology, the ability to reach beyond the classroom, to time shift, the ability of your students to go back and review that material multiple times before the midterm – those things are important. The technology supports teaching in that way. If you start with good teaching and you add good technology, that’s when you fly.”

SMART’s interactive whiteboards is a county-wide phenomenon.

In 2007, Laramie County Community College was tied for first place as the most tech-savvy mid-sized community college in the country by the Digital Community Colleges Survey conducted by the Center for Digital Education and the American Association of Community Colleges. It’s this kind of achievement that draws students and faculty to LCCC.

“Our number one ranking is celebrated in our marketing materials, including advertising, print materials and student recruiting. Enrollment has increased 36 percent in the past five years, and student surveys have confirmed that marketing our cutting-edge technology has played a valuable role,” explains Don Myers, Audiovisual Technician at LCCC.

The award is a testament to the kind of forward thinking that seems to have always typified Wyoming, and especially LCCC. The largest community college in Wyoming, LCCC has 26 rooms designated as SMART classrooms. Equipment includes a SMART Board interactive whiteboard and projector, a computer, and VCR and DVD players. The college also has 20 SMART multimedia classrooms that feature all this, as well as an AMX control system that controls projector operation and a document reader, bringing their total count of SMART Board interactive whiteboards to 66.

LCCC is not the only Laramie County institution to standardize on SMART Board interactive whiteboards and other SMART products. The schools in

For Detention Captain Bill Long, the choice of a SMART Board interactive whiteboard was a natural one because he had used one when he was employed as an instructor at LCCC. In his current position, Long primarily uses the detention center’s SMART Board for training recruits to the sheriff’s department and for public relations and public education programs. When he or his colleagues are not using the interactive whiteboard, he finds personnel from other departments are eager to use it for their own work.

Kara Gann knows people are quick to convert to SMART products. As the information technology program administrator at LCSD, Gann has watched the adoption of SMART Board interactive whiteboards in each of the district’s 33 schools.

During the early stages of LCSD’s SMART project, Gann and other decision-makers toured Laramie County Community College to see their SMART classrooms in action. Gann says they chose SMART Board interactive whiteboards because of SMART Notebook software, which is especially designed with teachers and students in mind. She explains, “We looked carefully at other interactive whiteboard products and could not find other software that was as comprehensive as Notebook software.”

Wyoming is a state of many firsts. It was the first state in the union to grant women voting rights and privileges, and Wyoming’s Laramie County was the first in the country to have a public library system. As is often the case when a new idea is introduced, others follow suit.

Such has been the situation when it comes to the introduction and adoption of SMART’s educational technology products in Laramie County. After Laramie County Community College (LCCC) purchased its first SMART Board interactive whiteboard in 1999, it underwent what might be called a technological revolution, and now adoption of

As a result of standardizing on SMART products, LCSD teachers are on the forefront of making ICT a vital part of educating the youth of Laramie County. Maureen Young, Technology Integration Specialist in the county’s South Triad Elementary Schools, believes using SMART Board interactive whiteboards along with document cameras, DVD players and SMART’s AirLiner [now known as SMART Slate] wireless slates, “helps to reach different modalities, thus improving learning for all students.”

Those tremendous gains are being realized on a county-wide basis because of the decision to standardize on SMART Board interactive whiteboards and other products. As a result, learning is improved for students from kindergarten to college. Such forward thinking is proof that Wyoming is at the top of the class, driving change and modeling innovation for the rest of the county.

of an overhead projector. From his lectern he writes in digital ink on his lecture slides, which are projected onto a large screen at the front of the room.

“I use the Sympodium to teach all my classes,” says Hubbard, who has had the product for three years. “I use the digital pen to freehand notes during class. Once we are finished for the day, I easily convert the notes into a PDF file and post them to the Web. Students find this extremely helpful. It eliminates the need to furiously scribble notes.”

The ability to use digital ink was one of the main reasons Instructional and Information Technology Manager Joel Caughran decided to purchase the product for UGA’s chemistry department. “We had some professors who were still using overhead projectors to teach how to solve organic chemistry problems,” Caughran says. “They would have to rummage through previous projector sheets to illustrate their points, and some sheets would get lost. If they were using the rolls, the notes would get smudged. We saw the Sympodium as a good solution to this.”

Caughran also found that professors who were using more current teaching tools, such as PowerPoint software, were limited because they could not easily add notes to their prepared material. The Sympodium now enables them to do exactly that.

The Sympodium is also flexible, so professors at UGA can use many different types of resources in their lectures.

“It simplifies the way that I deliver material,” says Hubbard. “I paste full color pictures and graphs into slides and then mark them, using the pen to illustrate important points.”

Hubbard teaches large classes that each have about 150 pre-medicine, pre-pharmacy and science majors. His material must suit the needs of students studying a variety of subjects. He also needs to reach a large audience effectively and reduce his preparation time. For Hubbard, the Sympodium solved all these issues. “I can make general templates for my students to print out beforehand, and then they jot my notes onto the templates during class. The Sympodium has increased the speed and volume of information that I can teach without sacrificing my students’ ability to follow along and comprehend,” he says.

Hubbard’s remarks are echoed across the department. Caughran says, “Professors feel like their lectures are going further because students don’t constantly have their faces in notebooks. They can pay attention and just write down important concepts, knowing they will get the notes later, when I post the PDF file on the Web.”

Now almost every lecturer in the department is using the Sympodium, and Caughran is happy with the investment. “Because our resource dollars are limited, we have to be careful with them. I am quite pleased with how this investment has worked out.”

You can tell there’s something different about the students in Dr. Richard Hubbard’s lecture and lab classes at the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens, Georgia.
