Thank you for your interest in joining Smile Train’s Student Ambassador program (SA). The SA has become an essential part of Smile Train’s family and we’re excited for you to learn more.

By becoming a SA member, you are helping Smile Train continue to empower local medical professionals to provide 100%-free cleft repair surgery and comprehensive cleft care for children around the world. Every five minutes a Smile Train sponsored cleft surgery helps a child in need and with the Student Ambassadors’ support, we will help ensure every child that comes through our programs receives the quality cleft treatment they deserve.

On behalf of our Smile Train team and the one million (and counting) children we have helped, I thank you again.

With best wishes,

Susannah SchaeferCEO

About Smile Train

Smile Train is an international children’s charity with a sustainable approach to a single, solvable issue: cleft lip and palate.

Smile Train empowers local medical professionals with training, funding, and resources to provide free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children globally. We advance a sustainable solution and scalable global health model for cleft treatment, drastically improving children’s lives, including their ability to eat, breathe, speak, and ultimately thrive.

We use the “teach a man to fish” model focusing on training local medical professionals to provide quality cleft treatment in their own communities. Those medical professionals then go on to train other medical professionals creating a long-term, sustainable system.

As a result of our efficiency and with the help of our donors and partners around the world, Smile Train has supported more than one million cleft surgeries since 1999.

We Support Comprehensive Cleft Care With Your Help

Children born with clefts often need more than just surgery. They may also need dental care, orthodontic treatment, speech therapy, and psychosocial services. Where these services are available, we do everything we can to make them available to our patients.

SA Membership FAQ

What does it mean to be in the SA program?

Being in the SA program means being part of a group of likeminded individuals who are invested in spreading awareness about cleft treatments, promoting Smile Train’s cause, and providing forever smiles for children around the world!

“The Student Ambassador program is a journey of self-discovery. I was born with a cleft lip and had never met anyone else with a cleft lip or palate. I like that we are all connected and working together to help others.” - Sandhya Murugavel, Smile Train Student Ambassador

Who are the SA Members?

SA is comprised of a diverse group of high schoolers across the U.S. who are bound together by one common thread: their commitment to Smile Train. Our members have varied backgrounds, interests, and stories. Each SA member brings a unique perspective to the table. That is what makes this such a strong and engaging group.

Some SA members have a personal connection to cleft, either being born with one themselves or having a friend or family member who was born with a cleft. However; many of our members support Smile Train because they believe strongly in our ‘teach a man to fish’ model, or are interested in global healthcare and the social good sector.

Joining this new group is a great way to create friendships and support Smile Train’s programs. We encourage high school students interested in becoming a part of the group to reach out to [email protected] to learn more.

“The SA program helped me build networks with my fellow Smile Makers.”- Kayla Coriz, Smile Train Student Ambassador

Why should I join the SA?

As a SA member, you will change the world. You will become a part of Smile Train’s community by helping Smile Train empower local medical professionals to provide cleft care and you will also spread awareness about cleft. You’ll get exclusive Smile Train updates from our Programs staff and partners in the field. You will also have the ability to change lives. You will see the result of your work and understand how amazing it is to be a part of a nonprofit.

“When you see the smile you helped create… there is no feeling like it. To know you truly are making a difference warms your heart in ways you couldn’t imagine.” - Juliana Wells, Smile Train Student Ambassador

How do I join the SA?

Applications will become available each summer for one month and can be accessed at smiletrain.org/SAapplication.

If you have expressed interest during the year, a Smile Train representative will send you a notification when the application season opens.

The application consists of questions about basic information and a few personal essay questions. These questions are designed for us to get a better understanding of who you are. We want to see your ideas, thoughts about fundraising, and who you want to become as a young philanthropist.

“The program has made me aware of the community around me and all the people who want to support a cause that is important to me.”- Richard Kim, Smile Train Student Ambassador

What can I do while I wait for the applications to be available?

If you are interested in joining but the application is not yet available, there are still many ways that you can get involved! You can begin by designing an initiative based on your unique interests and resources. Contact [email protected] to help you get started.

Explanation of Requirements

Funding Two Smiles

The $500 fundraising requirement can be raised through hosting an event, securing a partnership with a business or collecting personal donations from family and friends. Share with potential supporters that millions of children with clefts around the world live in isolation, but more importantly, have difficulty eating, breathing, hearing, and speaking. Cleft repair surgery is safe, and the transformation is immediate. Don’t be afraid to get creative! Organize a run/walk, have a bake sale, or anything else you can think

of (See page 10 for more ideas). Remember, $250 is all it can take to change a child’s life.

Fundraising Events

Fundraisers are organized events that SA members mastermind, plan, and execute within their own communities. This can be an in-person fundraiser at school, places of worship, or an online fundraiser. SA members practice organizing initiatives, mobilizing friends, raising funds for a philanthropic cause, and being incredibly proud of the result!

Throughout the program, Smile Train staff will suggest fundraising campaigns for SA members to join. For example, every October, Smile Train participates in World Smile Day®, a day created by Harvey Ball, the originator of the smiley face logo, who believed that everyone should devote one day each year to smiles and acts of compassion throughout the world. Ambassadors who sign up to host a World Smile Day® event receive resources and guides to make it successful. We’ll invite Student Ambassadors to participate in this and other global campaigns.

Educational Programs

It’s important for SA members to understand how Smile Train’s programs fit within the context of the larger global health community. SA members host educational programs so their community can learn more about our medical programs and innovative projects in education, training and comprehensive cleft care.

Member Collaborations

All SA members come together to network with each other during conference calls, share via a closed Facebook group, and bond at the SA Annual Summit. Student Ambassadors get to know each other, hear directly from Smile Train representatives about our programs in the field and brainstorm at the Conference calls.

The Facebook group provides a hub for members to connect with one another, show off their latest success, and plan meet-ups. The Summit is a weekend long conference providing a chance for Ambassadors to get an insider’s look at Smile Train’s headquarters, work through a real business case study, virtually meet surgeons and patients and sightsee the Big Apple. A portion of expenses will be covered as a thank you.

Write Web Stories

We want the world to know about SA’s successes! Ambassadors are asked to write a short story about their event as a way to spread ideas and show-off their hard work. It’s important for others to see someone so young making such a big difference. Check out this example: smiletrain.org/stories/skating-for-smiles

Member Profiles

SA members are some of Smile Train’s most important advocates. We are proud of their involvement and are happy to feature their accomplishments, so we list members on our website.

Each board member has a dedicated profile on the SA webpage including their own online fundraising page. SA will be able to customize the copy, graphics and videos on their page and will be given a personalized URL that can easily be posted and shared with their contacts. Fundraising pages allow SA and supporters to keep track of amounts raised on an ongoing basis and is a fun way to engage SA’s community of friends!

Smile Train staff will provide instructions for setting up fundraising pages at the start of the program and are available for one on one help if needed.

Smile Train’s Impact

The Economic Impact of Cleft Lip and Palate Treatment

Leveraging data provided by Smile Train, in December 2016, researchers including experts from Harvard Medical School published a study on the economic benefits of Smile Train’s programs in the British Medical Journal Global Health. Report findings show that each cleft repair surgery conducted by a Smile Train medical partner at an in-country hospital not only improved a child’s health, but also boosted individual economic well-being and global economy by up to $20 billion.**BMJ Global Health - Economic valuation of the impact of a large surgical charity using the value of lost welfare approach Daniel Scott Corlew, Blake C Alkire, Dan Poenaru, John G Meara,

Mark G Shrime Published 12/8/16 - http://gh.bmj.com/content/1/4/e000059

The study shows that for as little as $250, the approximate cost of a single cleft repair surgery, Smile Train’s local medical partners are able to provide children with an opportunity to live a healthy, happy life, and in turn, significantly boost individual and overall economic well-being. This research confirms that providing essential surgical care, especially cleft lip and palate surgery, not only improves health outcomes in developing countries, but also provides a massive economic boost. Study results are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal around health, as it reinforces the role access to health care plays in overall global development.
