The BBQ put on by the Oriental Band prior to the parade was a lot of fun and the food was very good. Illustrious Sir George Wohlleben did the grilling along with a little help from our HP & P Don Lane. Thank you to all who brought the food. I hope you all attended the Legion of Honor Drill Team’s “All You Can Eat Spaghetti Feed.” I’ll tell you what, if you did not get enough to eat, it was your own darn fault! The food was outstanding! Thank you to all who attended. Lady Marilyn’s “Fas- cinating Ladies” luncheon. One of our major money makers for the year is com- ing fast. It is our 2 nd annual “Bluegrass on the Green” festival August 23 rd , 24 th and 25 th . The committee un- der the leadership of our HP&P Don Lane has been working very hard to make this a big success. This year is going to be huge compared to last year! There is talk that there could be around 5,000 people in attendance over the weekend. The publicity has been great from our bluegrass committee. They, along with the bands that will be performing at our festival, have been spreading the word everywhere they go. We are expecting a lot of people from out of state who follow the bluegrass bands. We have some really popular bands head lined by Kenny and Amanda Smith who are award winners from the Mid-West. We hope many of you will come and support our festival. Please vol- unteer to help, and come to the festival to show your support for our temple. Our Blue Lodges play a very important part in in- creasing our membership and we continue to visit a lodge once a month. In April we visited Alki Lodge in West Seattle. It happened to be the official visit of our Grand Master and he was very impressed with how many Shrine Masons were there. We had around 35 Shrine Masons in attendance. This month we will be visiting Crystal Lodge in Marysville. Noble Larry Bronner is spearheading this monthly event, so please contact him and let him know if you will be attend- ing the meeting. Crystal Lodge meeting will be on Tuesday, May 7 th at 7:30 pm. Remember to keep active in your own Lodge, too. Karen and I look forward to visiting your clubs and units in the future. Until next month, take care and we will talk to you soon. Change is in the air. It comes quickly, without warning. Are you ready for it? Changes come in many forms, from things we can control to those we cannot. Reality often dictates the direc- tion we must go. Our Shrine has recently experienced rapid and unforeseen changes. A recent audit of the Nile finan- cials shows we need to change or we will need to look else- where for our Shrine to meet. At the current expendi- tures rates, we can only last 3 more years if we do not find additional fundraising income. Your elected Di- van have cut expenditures through personal expense, office hours and reduced employee pay. We look at everything and everywhere we can to keep this prop- erty. We are losing the battle of retaining our member- ship because of Black Camel visits. We welcome new members coming in but not seeing any gains. Have you noticed that many of our new members have families? If we expect the Noble to attend, we need to change the way we operate and embrace the family unit and offer child care. Involve that Noble’s Lady by creating interests within your unit. Your man cave is shrinking. Our facility is large enough to accom- modate all who ask the question HOW CAN I HELP, regardless of their gender. For example, at the Nile Easter egg hunt we had females dressed as a Clowns helping the Clown Unit. What a joy it was to see how much FUN that Unit had that day. Change, ask yourself, are you a Shriner committed to the principals in Shrinedom and can function as such no matter where we meet and stay true to the Shrine hospital for children? Or are you so entrenched in a piece of property that serves only a few and is draining our pockets towards financial crises. Well it’s a bitter pill to swallow, but someone has to tell you the truth, even though you don’t want to hear it. We once met in Seattle. Our Seattle property was taken for the World’s Fair so we move to the NileCountry Club. It is now time to look at our options again. There are several ideas floating in the air. No matter what direction we decide, together there will be those who will disagree and refuse to open their eyes and mind. We are past the tipping point. We can fix this problem by downsizing and have a financial wind fall for the future. We can control our destiny. The question is, will you allow a change to happen? Do not panic! At this point there are no plans to sell and your Divan is doing everything to keep this place in proper working order. I write this article so you are all aware that change is a real issue we must face. “There is no God higher than Truth.” - Gandhi Craig Jacobson, Brother/ Noble/ Chief Rabban Spring is a great time at the Nile. The activity level al- ways picks up dramatically in the spring and summer months, and this year is no exception. We started last month with the La Conner and Oak Harbor parades, the First Lady’s luncheon and our last presentation of the Pote’s Insider Cruise to Alaska. This month we have even more exciting activities for you. The Pote’s call parades this month include the May 11 th Sequim parade, the May 18 th the Bremerton parade and on May 25 th we have the Bellingham pa- rade. You don’t have to be an active member of a Nile unit or club to march in a parade; just show up with your fez and join us in the fun. For parade start times and form-up locations give our Director of Uniform Units, Nick Nichols, a call at 206-310-8040. Speaking of parades, we have two parade units that need drivers for their mini-motorized parade vehicles; the Truckers and the Mini-Bikes. The Truckers have four trucks that need drivers and the Mini-Bikers have about a dozen mini-bikes that need riders for our pa- rades. These vehicles are a great deal of fun to operate and add significantly to the presence of Nile Shrine in our parades. If you would like to operate one of these vehicles, please contact the unit presidents. The Direc- tor of the Truckers is Robert Clark, 360-675-8186. The Captain of the Mini-Bikes is Howard Wise, 425-245- 3289 or 425-774-9611 ext. 213. On the business side of Nile, better than average weather has yielded good March and April Golf Course sales volume. This has helped our cash flow significantly. This month we will be receiving 40 new golf carts to replace our aging and troublesome fleet of rental carts which we will lease at a significantly lower rate than we have paid in the past. The new carts promise to be more trouble free and easier to service than the ones we have had for the past three years. As you may have heard, our Greens Superintendent, Noble Davis Korsmoe, decided to retire last month. Davis helped build our golf course and has been its Su- perintendent for 43 years. Much of the beauty that is our Nile Golf & Country Club is directly attributable to his skill and tireless effort. We will miss him greatly. He will continue to be available for the next few years to consult and assist our new Greens Superintendent. Out new Greens Superintendent is Pete Echols, who will be joining our staff about May 1 st . He comes to us from Simplot Corporation. Pete is well versed in golf course operations. He has constructed several golf courses and has been Superintendent at several others. We are fortunate to have found such a qualified person to take over the operation of our facility. Be sure to welcome Pete when you see him around Nile.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION···Potentate Continued from page 1 INTERESTED IN A

MOTORCYCLE CLUB?There seems to be interest in forming a motorcycle club at Nile. A minimum of 10 Nobles are required in order to form the club.

If we form a Motorcycle Club, we would have monthly meetings, money makers, rides, social enents and per-form in parades (without special maneuvers).

Ladies would not be able to ride in the parades with us, but could participate fully in all other events as passengers or as drivers.

Anyone interested in starting a Nile Motorcycle Club, please contact Dave Brady at [email protected] or at 425-481-0159. We will meet in June at Nile to assess the level of interest and plan the club’s formation. Check the June SWN and emails for more information.

A number of us receive telephone solicitations every year from persons purporting to be Shriners who are soliciting money for a charity. Please note: Neither Nile Shrine nor Shriners International currently use tele-phone solicitations for fund raising. It appears that the calls may be made by a commercial telephone solicita-tion company (a phone room) that contracts with Beni Hassan Temple #64 AEAONMS out of Lynnwood. Beni Hassan Temple is part of Prince Hall Masonry. Their charity work has nothing to do with Shriners International or with Shriners Hospitals for Children. Just for your information, a commercial phone room normally works on commissions that range from 50% to 70% of the money they generate, so less than ½ of the money donated ever gets to the charity. At Shriners, 100% goes to operate our philanthropy.

Membership is an ongoing concern both here at Nile and for Shriners International. To date, in 2013 Nile has had less than 10 new nobles join our ranks. We need your friends to join Masonry and the Nile. See-ing Nile continue to prosper and grow is everyone’s responsibility.

May 7th, we are going to make our Blue Lodge visit to Crystal Lodge #122 in downtown Marysville. Lodge convenes at 7:30pm. No fez please, just bring your masonic apron. Be advised, there is no meal prior to lodge, so please plan accordingly.

Our Nile May open meeting takes place on May 8th. The evening will start with Zem-Zem at 5:00pm. La-dies and guests are invited. I hope to see you there.

Director of Uniformed Units

by Nick Nichols

April showers bring May flowers and hopefully a little warmer weather and sunshine. With 3 parades, May is always a busy month.

The 118th Sequim Irrigation Festival Parade is on Sat-urday, May 11th. Form up at 11:00 am and the parade starts at noon. Olympic Peninsula Shrine Club has ar-ranged for lunch at the Masonic Center following the parade. They have also arranged a dinner at the Baja Cantina for those who arrive Friday night.

The 65th Annual Armed Forces Day Parade in Bremer-ton is the following Saturday, May 18th. NOTE: The parade route has changed due to a new island at the intersection of 4th and Warren Ave. Staging is 9:00 am at Olympic College and the parade starts at 10:00 am from Evergreen Park and heads south on Pacific Ave ending at 6th St. Lunch following the parade will be at the Elks Lodge located at 4131 NE Pine Road in East Bremerton.

Finally, the Bellingham Ski to Sea Blossom Time Grand Parade is May 25th. We’re number 42 in a long list of entries. Form up at 11:00 am and the parade starts at Noon. Same route down Alabama finishing at N. State and York. Lunch following the parade is pre-pared by the Northwest Shrine Club at the American Legion Hall, 1688 W. Bakerview Road.

Details and changes will be provided the week prior to each parade by Nile E-Grams to all the heads of Units and Clubs. They, in turn, should forward a copy to their unit membership.

Let’s have a great turnout for the May parades. Remem-ber, we are all about the Shriners Hospitals for Children and make ourselves visible in the eyes of the public.

Calliope

by Bob T. Wilson

The Calliope Unit performed in the La Conner and Oak Harbor parades in April, and now we have pa-rades in Sequim May 11th and Bellingham May 25th.

The unit is in the process of selling the Moonwalk, or Bouncy House. Funds from the sale will help the Cal-liope unit finances.

The Calliope unit is great and well received and liked in parades. It is also a great unit for Nobles to partici-pate in Nile activities. For those still working it does not take up a lot of time. The unit is always looking for new members. Please contact our Secretary, Noble Bob O’Brien at [email protected] to request a petition to join this great unit.

Director’s Staff

Since our last writing a tremendous amount of work has taken place at the 2nd Section (Director’s Staff) building. We fondly refer to the location as the “shack.” Our kitchen is coming together with rear-ranged counters, cabinets, stove and griddle. Drywall has been put up and getting closer to final painting. Still to come are fixing the exhaust, putting up shelving and work on the floor tiles. Special thanks to George Young who single handedly covered the exterior west wall of the kitchen where there used to be a shutter that was never used. Thanks George. Great job! Can’t even tell that there used to be something there!

As you may have noticed, Nile has had trees removed. It has really opened up the picnic area. A tree in the parking area just outside the shack has been removed. The stumps are being removed and the areas where the tree was will be surfaced to match the rest of the parking area. Jim Butler and Dave Ramich are leading this project.

With the coming of dryer, warmer weather there is much to do including putting up the tents and clean-ing and treating the canvass. The larger tent will be put up soon by a crew of Nobles and volunteers. We will also be painting the interior panels for the Haunted House, organizing the lean to, performing golf cart maintenance and expanding our game room space on the 2nd floor. There is plenty to do so if you are inter-ested in lending a hand please contact anyone in the Director’s Staff. You can join our unit by contacting anyone of us.

The Director’s Staff sells firewood to raise money. The price is $200 a cord and we sell half cords, too. If you are interested contact any of the members in the unit.

It sounds like we work all the time and, yes, we do, but we also appreciate each other, enjoy having good meals together and like to have fun together.

Fun On Wheels

by Glenn Bailey, Wagonmaster

Our first campout of the season at Midway Park in Chehalis, WA was very successful. A big THANK YOU to George and Suzanne Young for organizing.

Our campout at Hidden Village RV Park in Lynden, WA (north of Bellingham) will be hosted by Peter and Esther Damm, May 23-26. If you haven’t yet signed up contact Wagonmaster Glenn Bailey at 206-365-8003 as soon as possible.

Don’t forget the 2013 Challenge. Be the first to sign up a guest or bring in a new member RV’er and receive a specially selected gift chosen by your Wagonmaster. Talk to your friends, fellow masons and neighbors. Let them know they are welcome to join in for fun and good fellowship.

We are anticipating the imminent arrival of triplets to the Bailey clan. By the time you read this they should

be at home, nestled snug in their cribs. An announce-ment with further details at our next meeting.

Spring is officially here – flowers are blooming, birds are singing and the R.V. parks await the arrival of our rigs. Show your enthusiasm and spirit for the Fun On Wheels group. Attend one of our outings. With increased participation comes increased fun and FUN is what keeps us young.

Our monthly dinner meetings are held the second Thursday of each month in the Red Room at the Nile. ZemZem is at 5:00 pm with dinner at 6:00 pm. If you would like to attend our next dinner meeting, please contact Dick Sellevold at 425-776-1670 no later than Saturday, May 4th.

Nobles and Veterans: May flowers have blossomed and your LOH is in full stride. Your May parade schedule: 11th Sequim form up 1100.18th Bremerton form up 0830.25th Bellingham form up 1030.

Mark your calendars for: 12th LOH pancake breakfast 0800-1200.27th Memorial Day at Tahoma.

Let’s have a good turnout, “Semper Paratus”.

Shurtah

The April meeting saw 30 dedicated Shriners fellow-shipping over a chili dinner and plenty of libations.

We reflected on Past High Shire Reeve Jim Vey and his medical condition and on Daniel Van Mill’s daughter who was seriously injured in a skiing accident.

Our treasurer reported that funds are in place to sup-port plans for the Summer parade season and our booth at the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe.

The Shurtah continues to persue the return of MMA and amateur boxing. These two events were popular and we look forward to bringing both of these draws back to Nile.

Our treasurer has filed a theft complaint with the Mountlake Terrace police department regarding our missing trailer. If anyone knows of the whereabouts of this trailer, please contact the treasurer.

Noble Blair Schaufele reminded us all that on June 22nd the Nile Shurtah will host the first annual get to-gether of the Shurtah Units of Bellingham, Spokane, Portland and Vancouver. This is a couples event and dry camping will be available for RVs, and campers.

We read the membership petition of Robert F. Sluder and will vote on his membership at our May meeting.

We look forward to seeing all of our members at our May 1st, 17:00 hours stated meeting. Former police of-ficers who are Shriners are welcome to attend.

Men’s Golf Club

by Arne Ringstad

The Men’s Golf Club had its first meeting of 2013 with a very good turnout of about 35 members. Tim Karas and John Cohn provided the meal and it was a wonderful rib dinner enjoyed by all. This was my first meeting as President and it went about well as I ex-pected. A number of issues were brought up but since we did not have all of the information the club mem-bers needed to vote on these issues they were tabled until the next meeting. We did vote unanimously on donating $5,000 to the general fund of the Temple. We had three members of the Divan present including the Potentate who spoke about the golf club and its mem-bers and hoped we will have a great golfing season with excellent weather.

I got to pre-read an article by our member Dan Boren and it reminded me of why I joined Masonry and the Shrine. Be sure to read his piece on page 7. We tend to have heated discussions around the Temple which I think is healthy for everybody but every once in a while we all need to be reminded why we are all here in the first place, Dan’s article did just that for me.

The course is drying up and playing better and I have seen an lot of public play in the last few weeks. That is indeed great news.

The planning for the Nile Men’s Golf Club annual golf Tournament is under way and entry forms are in the pro shop. We need everybody to come out and to encourage all their friends to do the same on July 13th.

Ladies’ Golf Club

by Toni Oien

The ladies division is looking for new members. Any-one interested in hearing what the club is all about is welcome to contact me, Toni Oien, Assistant Cap-tain at 425-486-3538 or Captain Mary Jo Toivola at 206-367-3712. Come and give us a try. We are a great group of ladies and have a lot of fun.

The golf clinics held in March were a success. We were given helpful hints on pitching, putting and reminders of the rules of golf. All the ladies wish to thank our professionals Joe Korn and Tasha Garma for their instructions and helpful hints.

April 2nd brought our first competition of the season and our first tie of the season. The winners for the Monthly Medal for April with net 69 are: Elaine Cohn Kathy Hall

The monthly medal competition also includes low putts and we also had a tie for that. The low putts of 36 for the April Monthly Medal go to: Elaine Cohn Barbara Scott

Congratulations to all the winners!

Eastside Shrine Club

by Jim Hart

The Eastside Shrine Club met for lunch at the “Big Fish Restaurant” in Kirkland in March and at the Nile’s #19 Bar & Grill in April. There were nearly 30 in attendance each time and we do have a good time. We are still looking for both new and old “Eastsiders” to join us for lunch. Come on out!

The Club did not participate in the Bellevue Arts and Crafts Fair last year. Since other Nile activities are oc-curring at the end of July this year, it appears the Club cannot field enough volunteers to man a booth at the Fair. We will keep in touch with Fair management and hope that in 2014 we will have a good location and suf-ficient volunteers to man a booth. In the meantime, we will keep an eye out for other fund raising possibilities.

The Club wants to give a big “Thank You” to the many visitors from the Renton and West Seattle Shrine Clubs that attend our meetings.

See you at the May 22nd lunch meeting at the Big Fish Restaurant in Kirkland.

Kitsap Peninsula

Shrine Clubby Al Dillan, secretary

“Gentlemen, Here comes the month of May”. Sounds a lot like “Ladies and Gentlemen, here come the Shriners”, doesn’t it? That’s because that is what you’ll be hearing this month as the parade season opens. Kitsap Peninsula Shrine Club did open with a parade in March in Bremerton for the St Pat’s parade and that was a great dress rehearsal. Now we start putting our best foot forward. Here’s the schedule for May:

Saturday, May 4th - Stated Meeting @ Bremerton Elks. Zem-zem - 2 pm, meeting - 3 pm, dinner - 4 pm. Reser-vations: Scot Sageser - 692-6550, Al Dillan - 394-7796

Saturday, May 11th - Irrigation Parade, Sequim. Meet at Masonic Lodge for coffee, Doughnuts, etc. for transportation to form-up area. Call Parade Chairman Carl Fleischmann 779-1327 for times.

Saturday, May 18th - Armed Forces Day Parade, Bremerton, 9 am form-up (State and 4th St), parade starts at 10:00 am, 11:00am Hamburgers-on-the-Patio at Bremerton Elks

Viking Fest Parade, Poulsbo, 1 pm form-up, Parade (6th Ave and Fjord), parade starts at 2 pm. Note: You may park your cars at Al Dillan’s home before the parade, as in years past.

NorthwestShrine Club

by Ron Fine, President

Oh my goodness it’s Spring time again. Tuesday, May 7th will be our monthly dinner meeting at Jeckyl & Hyde Deli and Ale House, 709 W. Orchard Drive. Menu for the evening will be: Roast Beef, Roasted Little Red Potatoes/Gravy, Veggies, Caesar Salad, Rolls Coffee, Tea & Dessert. Cost is $17.00 per person. Contact Noble Ron Fine for reservations at 360-676-5747 or [email protected]. Deadline is Thursday, April 25th.

We had 27 out of 32 reservations for our last dinner. the 5 missing Nobles will be billed as per our rules, as we had to pay for those dinners. May 25th is our annual Hamburger Feed at the American Legion Post #7. We need all the help we can get, plus if everyone helps out by bringing a Raffle prize that would be great we need a total of 20 prizes. Noble Greg Cory asked that I print an article he wrote to all members and Ladies:

The Shrine Club appears to be getting smaller and that is not good news. We as club members need to take some action to increase our membership. Any and all suggestion are appreciated and we welcome them all. One thing is to quickly update our website. It’s a good source for people to find out about us. We need someone who is skilled at this. The news letter will let us know about our speakers and other activities that are going on. Hope to see you on Tuesday, May 7th. Our speaker will be talking about ID Theft.

RentonShrine Club

At our March 7th stated meeting President Dick Brandon welcomed 27 members and guests. We had the pleasure of the Potentate and several members of the Divan and their ladies visiting our club. We also greeted some members from West Seattle Shrine Club.

The flyers for our picnic on August 11th were handed out and all guests were invited to join us. We need everyone to RSVP to Dick Brandon or Dick Gerber so we can be sure to have enough hamburgers and hot dogs on hand.

The Potentate mentioned that the Greeters have a 14 passenger van that units can be rented for $100 plus fill the gas tank.

NILE SHRINESTATED MEETING APRIL 10, 2013

Prior to the official opening of the Stated Meeting, we were entertained by Noble Donald E. Moore. He made a presentation entitled “Masonry in the Movies.” It was amazing how many films or books have subliminal or orchestrated items regarding the Masonic rituals.

Stated Meeting of Nile Shrine was opened at 7:44 p.m., in the usual manner Noble Larry J. “Mr. Micro-phone” Gillespie was the Marshal

For the evening. He introduced the Divan in reverse order:

Recorder: Richard D. Syson Treasurer: III. David E. Ramich, P.P. Oriental Guide: Gale H. Kenney High Priest and Prophet: Donald E. Lane Assistant Rabban: David M. Brady, Sr. Chief Rabban: Craig A. Jacobson Potentate 2013: Illustrious James L. Hutchins

The Honor Guards for this evening were:

Nile Calliope Unit Nile Chanters Nile Truckers

The Legion of Honor presented the colors and lead in the pledge of Allegiance.

The Chanters gave an outstanding rendition of the National Anthem.

The Legion of Honor then posted the flags. The Chanters, and the Legion of Honor flag team were then dismissed with thanks.

The Honor Guards were then dismissed with many thanks from the potentate.

The blessing for the evening’s festivities was delivered by Noble E. Jeffrey Craig, Chaplain.

Potentate III. James L. Hutchins, opened the Nile Shrine Stated Meeting with the assistance of the Ori-ental Guide, Noble Gale H. Kenney.

The Past Potentates in attendance were then intro-duced: 1988 Gordon B. Anderson 1994 III. John G. Lien 2000 III. Gerald “Jerry” Seldon 2001 III. Carl L. Alexander 2002/2003 III. Guest Past Potentate: 2012 III. Walter Woodward, Afifi Temple, Tacoma

The Potentate noted that the minutes from the last meeting were published in the Smile with Nile he asked for a motion to dispense with the reading of those minutes. It was moved, seconded and passed.

A visiting Noble from Mabuhay Temple was intro-duced, and the Potentate with the Divan greeted them and thanked him for being at our meeting.

Petitions: One was read for Bro. John Wesley Sepolen and voted upon, he was elected and will be contacted.

The Black Camel list was read by the Recorder and a prayer was given for those Nobles who have passed on to the Great Architect of the Universe. There were eight Nobles from Nile and our Chaplain gave a fine prayer for those who have departed from us.

Financials: The Treasurer read the report for the Nile and gave the status of the accounts. Copies of the draft audit were available at the tables for those in atten-dance. Questions were asked and answered as posed.

Old Business: A vote was taken to remove Section VI in its entirety from the By-Laws of Nile Shriners. It was passed unanimously. The Board of Trustees will be replaced with a viable and active committee.

Masonic Lodge Visitations: The next visitation will be to Crystal Lodge 122 in Marysville on May 7th, lodge convenes at 7:30 p.m., and there is no meal prior to lodge that evening.

New Business The repair of the HVAC cribbing over the Gold Room was presented. The monies for the repair were request-ed to be taken from the DAD Fund. See attached bid resolution.

The Blue Grass Fund Raiser was held at the Maltby Community Center on March 16, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00

p.m., the HP&P reported a good turn out and funds received were turned over to the Treasurer for deposit.

The Potentates Inside Passage Cruise for Nile is sched-uled for August 14th.The final presentation of the cruise information will be on Sunday April 21 at 2:00 p.m.

DAD Fund (Dime a Day) needs donations to be sent to the office to keep up with building repairs and we also need the Unit and Club donations. Our budget is very tight in the first quarter of every year. As illus-trated by the request to make needed repairs.

III. George H. Wohlleben announced that Nile will have a “Garage Sale” this fall. He is looking for any donations of goods to help raise money for the Nile. Contact him or Larry Bronner if you are able to pro-vide items for sale at the Nile. All goods sold are for the benefit of Nile Temple only.

High Priest and Prophet Noble Donald E. Lane rose to speak about Nile hosting the 2017 Summer PNSA. He is beginning to make plans and have this event at Nile. He needs ALL Nobles to become involved and help make this a memorable experience. The year 2017 may seem far away, but it really isn’t. Contact Noble Lane and volunteer now.

And a reminder: in the year 2015 the Assistant Rabban will be hosting the Winter PNSA at Nile. Different venue, but still needs your help in making it a success.

The Potentate asked to have Nobles Doug MacKen-zie, Larry A. Bronner be brought to the East line. He presented them with Nile Temple Service Awards. The other recipients were not at the meeting and they will be honored in May.

Announcements/ presentations: Noble Dale Good brought greetings from Hatasu Temple, Daughters of the Nile. He presented a dona-tion from Queen Teresa Good for the Nile DAD Fund.

Noble Morrie Olsen announced that the Nile will be holding a golf tournament on July 13th. Coffee and doughnuts at 7:00, tee off at 8:00 pm. Please support this fun event, sign up early and make them have lots of doughnuts on hand.

Noble Steve Kiely announced he will be in the running for Oriental Guide this next election time.

Assistant Rabban David M. Brady announced that the Divan and Nobles are invited to attend a “Blue Lodge Evening” at Crystal Masonic Lodge #122, located in Marysville. Meeting is on May 7, 2013 and it starts at 7:30 pm. This is a Masonic event not a Shrine event, dress appropriately, no fez, and it is not a “sales” pitch for Nile. Just an evening with our Masonic Brothers where we can meet on the level and enjoy each other’s company. Be there or be square.

He gave a generous donation of $500. to the DAD Fund from the sale of his “Shriner Balls”. Plus a per-sonal donation.

Also donating to the DAD fund were: The Nile Mens Golf Club, $2,000. Zem-Zem Unit $1,500.

Thank you Nobles all. This money will assist the Nile in being one of the best maintained Temples in Shrine-dom.

The Potentates remarks: He made a general discussion and included such items of interest to the members;

Noble Davis Korsmoe our 43 year Greens Superinten-dent has retired, we all wish him the best.

He touched on the feeling of Members vs. Divan, he wanted everyone to realize we are all Nobles and Masonic Brothers. There is no you and US we are all one body.

The possibility of: increase in dues, special assess-ments, or other monetary relief for the Temple. He wants you to think about this, let him know your thoughts, bring forth ideas and work to resolve these issues. Contact him or any Divan member, we need your input.

A reminder about the Masonic Lodge visit to Crystal Lodge.

There being nothing further to come before the Nobility, the Potentate called for a closing prayer by Chaplain E. Jeffrey Craig.

Nile Shrine was closed at 8:43 p.m.

Respectfully submitted: Richard D. Syson, Recorder

I am an introvert.

I say this unashamedly. I feel, in fact, a measure of pride that puzzles my more garrulous friends. It was no surprise to read in “The Introvert Advantage” that, prior to speaking, introverts exercise far more of their cortical regions than extroverts. This gave me a chuckle and did much to explain my impression that extroverts walk around with their mental flies open. We are neither bashful nor aloof. We are thinkers.

Still, I envied the ease with which others made friends. The 25 years since college had left me with a social life that had atrophied at a barely perceptible pace. Old buddies started families or moved away. A divorce, my own career, and years of big-city commuting had left me questioning whether memories of a vibrant circle of friends were merely the first clouds of senility appearing on the horizon. It wasn’t until I picked up a copy of “Pillars of the Earth” that I remembered that my dad and both grandfathers had been Masons, and a grown up fraternity seemed just the ticket. After a year learning my way around the Masons, I joined the Shriners, mainly to access the Nile Golf and Country Club and-- I hoped-- fall in with a regular foursome. This is where a cast of completely lovable imbeciles threw a rope into the shadows and dragged me out into the sunlight.

Ned is one of my favorites, and not just because his handicap is even higher than mine. Militantly cheer-ful, he loves to laugh, and the days are too short to tell all the jokes stashed beneath his fez. After teeing off one morning, I was watching his cart glide toward the 1st green when his left hand appeared, wielding a big, soapy, plastic loop. Dozens of huge, blobby bubbles floated down the fairway with me glistening in the springtime sun. I laughed at the silliness and smiled at how lucky I was to find these guys.

Morrie is crusty and lovable in roughly equal parts. He’s an old baseball umpire and still has that presence. He’s also one of a few people who call me “Danny” and somehow I don’t mind. I once drew a beautiful drive around the dog-leg left #16 and then bounced a wedge neatly over the right edge of the cup, my ball coming to rest a scant 2 feet past the hole. Morrie was just as happy as I was and slapped me on the back, growling, “Danny, you miss this birdie and I’ll kick your ...”

I three-putted. From two feet, dead-level. He had the decency to leave me in peace.

I joined these guys with the modest goal of finding a weekly game, but stumbled into a bunch of kindred spirits. I play with Mac the most. One of the good and gentle people in the world, he grew up in India and has a musical laugh. We share a love of motorcycles and foreign cultures, and never seem to run out of things to talk about. Or there’s Johnny, a retired florist who seems driven to attend to the gastronomical needs of the entire club. Aside from my mother, he was the first person in years to call when I was sick just to ask how I was. Arne, a five-star extrovert with oak clusters, is 80% Mother Theresa and 20% Don Rickles, with a filthy mouth and a Fort Knox sized heart of gold. He’s also the mechanical whiz in the group and with-out his talents many of the carts, not to mention my ‘62 Rambler, would surely stop rolling. Loyd, a strap-ping lad from Amarillo who played defensive tackle

for Lou Holtz, has long horns mounted on the front of his cart, faux cowhide seats, and squeezes an epen-thetic “y” into my name making “Dan” a two-syllable word just like my Texan dad did. He’s a connoisseur of cigars and a reliable counsel on matters concern-ing biscuits and gravy. After a round, he always pulls a chair over for me and, somewhat to my surprise, he seems to enjoy my company as much as I do his.

The problem with really great friends is that you never get to spend enough time with them. Take Bob, for example. We hit it off right away and he addressed me in his booming, expansive voice as “Dan’l.” Years of hard work and play (and in all candor, some measure of intemperance and excess) combined to take their toll on his back, knees, and waistline. But watching him address the ball, you could still see the man who declined a football scholarship to the UW in favor of a baseball scholarship, and who mustang-ed up to retire as an officer in the Marine Corps. In July, I was putting out on #2, a 240 yard, uphill par 4. I heard a dull thud behind me and looked back to see Bob’s hybrid-launched tee shot roll a couple of yards onto the green. Not bad for a guy who would lose the battle with cancer two months later.

Bob called me in early September to ask if I wanted his cart. Thinking he wanted to sell it, I stressed that I didn’t mind the money but I simply preferred to walk. It turned out he wanted to give it to me, and suddenly the weakness in his voice and what I knew of his health added up sickeningly. The doctors had given him an-other month, six weeks max. The next day, pickups and strong backs appeared and the guys moved him from the hospital to the place he considered home. Jerry, the club secretary, dropped everything and moved in, car-ing for Bob right through to his final breath. September 29 was sunny and warm and began not with cleats on fairways but with dress shoes on the lawn of Holyrood Cemetery, surrounding a flag-draped casket. The same guys who had reacquainted me with laughter showed me that they were unashamed to cry at the loss of such a beloved friend. For a few minutes that day, I was sorry I had met any of them.

I called Jerry to thank him for what he’d done for Bob and told him he was my hero. He shrugged off the com-pliment, saying that he didn’t feel much like a hero, and besides, Bob would have done the same for him. Hell, a lot of the guys would have done the same. It’s just what brothers do. From what I’d seen, he had a point.

Whether it was Bob’s untimely death or simply the end of summer, I cannot say, but October and November weren’t right. Life felt like that first round after the greens are punched, like nothing would ever roll fair or hold a true line. Yet, by December, there were the stir-rings of planning for our May week in Sun River and the club tournament in July. Next Spring there would be one fewer bulbs coming up in the garden, but the cherry trees would again blossom and the sun would rise in the east as it has for countless millennia.

God willing, I will once again cheer the gently-drawn drive and curse the short putt with my new friends, passing many warm afternoons of bad humor and good whiskey from our little tree house above the 18th green.

And I’ll try not to think about the years wasted before I found these guys. Who doesn’t love a sandy par?

MESSAGE FROM THE IMPERIAL POTENTATE

GARAGE SALE HELP NEEDED

by George Wohlleben, P.P.

Nobles and Ladies:

We are planning the 1ST ANNUAL NILE GARAGE SALE for September 14th and 15th in the Nile picnic area. We need your help to make this fund raiser a suc-cess. Assistance and expertise is needed in the follow-ing areas: Donations Advertising Transportation Pricing On site salesAll income from this event goes to the DAD fund.

Please notify Larry Bronner (360-658-8304 or 206-321-7539) or George Wohlleben (360-652-4026 or 206 890-6211) if you wish to participate. Thank you for your assistance which, as always, is vital to make this Nile event successful.

Dear Fellow Nobles,

It is almost time to “SEND IN THE CLOWNS” at the 139th Imperial Session in Indianapolis. Our Shrine clowns will lead the parade, and provide great fun for the crowds. We hope to set a Guinness World Record with the most clowns in a parade! The Lady Shrine Clowns will also be participating to help set the RE-CORD!

We’ve attended several meetings and seminars lately – here are some highlights:

The Sports Seminar, held March 3- 6, featured guest speakers Hunter Cannon and Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham. Hunter is featured in some of our promotional materials and is a patient at our Northern California hospital. His remarks proved to us, once again, that obstacles placed in our way are merely challenges to be met. Imperial Sir Dale Stauss, Chairman, and his TEAM presented an inspiring program, enjoyed by everyone in attendance. If your game/event wasn’t represented, make sure the manager or leader attends next year.

Next we attended the Oriental Guides and Assistant Rabbans seminars, which were held at the Airport Marriott in Tampa, Fla., March 7 - 14. This training program has evolved considerably since the first one I attended some ten years ago, and has become a pre-mier leadership conference. Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder, Chairman, and his TEAM provided training for the many nobles and ladies in attendance. If you’re AR or OG was unable to attend, sign them up for next year. This training has been proven to strengthen temple operations time and time again.

Next on our agenda was attending Hejaz’ Potentate’s Ball in Greenville, S.C., which gave us a great oppor-tunity to socialize with Hejaz nobles and ladies. Also attending were the divan members of Jamil and Omar Shriners, and their ladies. It was wonderful to see so many South Carolina Shriners supporting one anoth-er. We thank you, Gary Parsons and Lady Barbara, for the invitation.

Next on our travels was a return to the Sunshine State.

Florida Shriners have a unique opportunity to extend hospitality to “snowbirds” enjoying a respite from the cold weather. Sahib nobles and ladies welcome many northerners to their Thursday luncheons in Sarasota. Our visit on March 7 was no exception. We were welcomed warmly by Illustrious Sir Bill Zurlo and his lady, Stacey Lee, the divan and their ladies, along with club and unit representatives. The 250 people in attendance enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship and brotherly love.

The Potentate of Egypt Shriners, Tom Robinson, and his lady, Trish, also welcomed us warmly to their Oasis in Tampa. We noticed a few fezzes from northern jurisdictions around the room at the Egypt temple, too. Some came down to visit for a few months and decided to stay. Isn’t it wonderful to have the opportu-nity to continue your Shrine activities when you move to a new area?

You’ve heard me speak of partnerships with many transportation providers throughout my years of service on the Imperial Divan. Southwest Airlines has a special place in my heart as my son, Paul, is a SWA pilot. Another noble, Martin Tennant, a Nemesis Shriner, also flies for SWA. We may have other SWA pilots in our midst that we are unaware of – we thank all of you for the work you do! On a recent visit with SWA CEO and President Gary Kelly, the four of us explored other partnership options. Hopefully, we’ll have more to report in a future message.

A second partnership opportunity is being explored with the Disney organization. On March 18, Imperial Sir Doug Maxwell, Gary Bergenske and I, along with staff from Leo Burnett, met with Disney World repre-sentatives to explore possible options. We are hopeful it will lead to a positive outcome for all parties.

It is exciting to be part of a groundbreaking ceremony, especially when the children who have received treat-ment and/or are receiving treatment at that respective hospital are involved. About 12 Patient Ambassadors from the St. Louis Shriners Hospital took the stage, and the microphone, and acted as the emcees during the groundbreaking ceremony for the new St. Louis hospital at 2 p.m. on March 20. It was a cold, windy day, but the children’s enthusiasm warmed our hearts.

The hospital will once again be part of the local B.U.L.L. Session Charity Event, to be held September 9-10th. The B.U.L.L. Session is one of Oregon’s largest charity events, contributing more than $4.6 million in just 22 years.

As one of the nine beneficiaries of this event, the hospital provides a number of silent auction packages. Last year we spent time asking for community support with items for the silent and oral auction. The extra time spent proved to be well worth it, with a $32,000 contribution from BULL that was used towards the purchase of the EOS machine.

We are asking for your help this year with auction package items. Below is a list of items that are needed by July 26th in order to complete auction packages for this year’s event. If you can assist, please contact Pat Grennan at [email protected] or 503-221-3458. Thank you!

Imperial Sir Doug Maxwell and Lady Patricia, Impe-rial Sir Dale Stauss and Lady Cheryl and Imperial Sir Jerry Gantt and Lady Lisa accompanied Lady Jan and myself to the event.

That evening, our group of officers and ladies was hosted by the Moolah divan and their ladies. The auditorium was filled with nobles and their ladies from various clubs and units. We were especially impressed with the monies given to Potentate Patrick Hensley for the temple’s transportation and hospital funds. We learned this is a normal occurrence at their stated meetings.

Our visit included a tour of the facility, which is a re-modeled former junior high school that was purchased by the temple in 1988.

Members of the South Atlantic Shrine Association met in Greensboro, N.C., on March 22 and 23 for their mid-winter meeting. North and South Carolina officers of Rotary International also happened to be gathering in the same hotel. A chance meeting with Rotary International President and CEO Ron Burton presented an opportunity to share ideas on member-ship growth and retention.

Next, we attended the Treasurers meeting. There is a difference between attending the OG/AR Leader-ship Conference and attending the Shrine Treasurers Association annual meeting. The Oriental Guides and Assistant Rabbans are new to their positions. Many of the treasurers have been in their positions for a year, or two, or more. They are just as eager for new ideas and have an interest in learning what is on the hori-zon. IS John Cinotto assisted me with the Installation of Officers. IS Doug Maxwell, IS Jack Jones and IS Jim McConnell also addressed the Treasurers. First Lady Jan presented an update on her program, “The Miracle of a Single Seed,” and information on the upcoming Imperial Session to the ladies in attendance. From the laughter coming through the dividing walls, she must have shared a story or two.

Our next report will contain visits to Tangier, Boumi, and Abou Saad temples, MASA meeting, Spring Board meeting, PR Seminar, FSA meeting and a visit with Sudan Shriners and their ladies.

Please continue to keep Membership as the “TOP Priority” for your temples, clubs and units. Remember the best way to recruit from Blue Lodges and the gen-eral public is by telling your stories and being willing to listen. Also keep in mind that mentoring those who join us will keep them with us.

Yours in the Faith, Alan “Al” W. Madsen, Imperial Potentate

MASONIC OUTREACH SERVICESby Mary Craves-Hollands, Director

(Part 1 of a 3 part article)

Because so many of the members of the Masonic Frater-nity and their spouses are veterans or spouses of veter-ans, your Masonic Outreach Services staff would like to present a three part article on VA benefits these members may qualify for now and as they age. This is Part I.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs census estimates, there are approximately 13 million veterans and their single surviving spouses age 65 and older. Comparing this to a total of 41 million Ameri-cans 65 and older, veterans and their single surviving spouses represent about 1/3 of the senior population. According to VA about 42% of all veterans are 65 and older. This percentage will continue to grow as the bulk of the Vietnam veterans - the largest cohort - are still younger than age 65.

Senior veterans are typically in receipt of four cash income programs from VA. Two of these programs - Pension and Death Pension - are paid to veterans and their surviving spouses who are non-service-connected disabled. The other two of these programs - Compensa-tion and DIC - are paid to veterans or surviving spouses due to disability or death from service connection.

The pension benefit commonly referred to as “Aid and Attendance,” are twin benefits which provide cash pay-ments to veterans who served during a period of war or to their single surviving spouses. Pension helps to cover the cost of home care, assisted living and nurs-ing home services. Pension is also available to veterans or surviving spouses with very low income who do not have long-term care costs. Cash income payments from Pension range from about $700 a month to a little over $2,000 a month depending on the type of claim and the medical rating involved. Most people

CLUB NEWS···don’t even know of the existence of this benefit. VA does not advertise it and as such many eligible people never apply.

It is unfortunate that this Pension has been misnamed “Aid and Attendance.” “Aid and attendance” and “Housebound” are actually additional monetary allow-ances provided with Pension if the recipient of Pen-sion monies needs the regular aid and attendance of another person or is considered housebound. The mis-nomer creates confusion because Aid and Attendance assistance allowances are also available for service-connected disabilities (Disability Compensation) and to a spouse of a service connected disabled veteran. Also, an Aid and Attendance allowance is available to a surviving spouse of a veteran if the surviving spouse is receiving DIC (Dependents Indemnity Compensa-tion). There are about 16 different monetary levels of Aid and Attendance or Housebound allowances avail-able with non-service-connected and service-connected disability programs for veterans or their surviving spouses. Approximately 308,700 senior veterans will receive Pension in 2013 and 171,000 of senior veteran survivors will receive Death Pension in 2013.

Your Masonic Outreach Services has been offering assistance in applying for the Aid and Attendance pension for two years now. We are familiar with the Fully Developed Claim process and work with an Ac-credited VA Agent to get these applications completed and submitted to the V.A. Having a Fully Developed Claim can often shave months off the waiting time for the Veteran in need of this pension.

If you would like further information about this pension, please contact Masonic Outreach Services at 206-878-8434/1-800-820-4630 Ext. 101 or [email protected].
