Being incarcerated himself in one of the notorious Maximum Prisons he invited the Leadership Programme called ‘The Responsible Individual’ (TRI) to be a part of his way forward in life. The programme was designed by author Karina Andersen to develop leaders in a world full of challenges. Franklin started the programme and soon after aspired to join her in training to inspire others to follow a life of responsibility with challenges he himself have over-come in the inmate population. Soon came the guidance and peer facilitation of the programme for up to 2500 inmates with the aid of radio, moving from Maximum Prison Facilities to Medium Prison Facilities and Youth Prison Facilities, guiding inmates in the responsibility of change, with the tools of ‘The Responsible Individual’ and SmilingOne's Circle of Change Approach (COC). His expertise stretches all the way from music development to support for parolees eager to change their directions in life, to various projects in the community. Much of Franklin’s current projects in the Nyanga, Elsies River and Ocean View areas are joint ventures with parolees and community members who have invited the Leadership Programme of ‘The Responsible Individual’ into their lives. Since 2009, Franklin Esau SmilingOne Change Agent has been part of an exceptional Leadership Development Programme that has been introduced by Karina Andersen, Author & Founder of the SmilingOne Foundation, to several Prisons around the Western Cape.
