Arista 18704 Post modem diva Annie Lennox shows that there is life after the Eurythmics on her first solo album. As the title indicates, the album is a showcase for her exceptional voice with its memorable tunes and rich production. Includes the songs "Why" and "Walking on Broken Glass." The CD contains an extra cut.

The Power of One Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Elektra 61335 Fans of Paul Simon's Graceland and the band Ladysmith Black Mambazo should certainly enjoy this new soundtrack album. Filled with South African rhythms, beautiful vocals and the a capella harmonies of the Bulawayo Church Choir, this album also features a guest appearance by Teddy Pendergras. This score, written by Hans Zimmer and orchestrated by Bruce Fowler, is also exceptionally well recorded.

SMOKEY'S CORNER Howdy, everybody! What you see here is volume 1,

number 1 of a planned quarterly newsletter which we here at Smokey's Records plan to put together for the benefit of you, our friends and customers.

Remember when we started to do mail­order a few years back? Well, we put together several catalogs and updates chock full of information. They took a lot of work to put together, and now, sadly, they are for practical purposes, obsolete. Especially the part about LPs! Don't expect that we can still get them for you. For the most part, we can't. And we can't maintain useful catalogs which represent an accurate image of what we carry and what we can sell to you, either.

Thus, the newsletter becomes our voice; the message-bringer concerning the music we carry. Of course it won't list everything--it can't! But remember our stock is large and our staff is here to serve you. If we don't carry something, let us try to special-order it for you. If you don't live nearby, rest assured that our mail-order lives; write or call; our staff will be happy to help you.

As a first edition, this newsletter is mostly devoted to listing new releases. Please note that this list covers highlights going back to the beginning of the year, and highlights they are: there's lots more in stock here at Smokey' s. Also, the upcoming new releases may or may not be in stock by the time that you read this­-if you would like to order one of them anyway, that's fine. We'll send your copy as soon &Sit arrives.

As we proceed with this newsletter, I'll make this column sort of a sounding­board where I'll be making comments about all sorts of things.

As always, this store has been built up through a dialogue between you, the customers, and us, the staff here at Smokey's Records. Your likes and dislikes, wants and desires , and your comments are always appreciated. Two of the most requested out-of-print albums have finally been reissued: Lucinda Williams self-titled debut album and her EP, Passionate Kisses. Originally on Rough Trade Records, these.have been unavailable for more than a year. With her powerful yet beautiful voice, Lucinda is reminiscent of such top singers as Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Fans of modem country, rock and folk should give these a listen. And don't forget to check out her new album, Sweet Old World.

Levellers Levelling the Land

Elektra 61325 Mixing acoustic and electric instruments, The Levellers have a highly energetic sound which combines postmodem rock with a Celtic lilt. "The violin often replaces the electric guitar in lead solos and breaks," says guitarist Simon. "Jon, our fiddle player, is quite an inventive guy--he makes great noises." The political nature of their songs are often charged with a passionate anger and while a lot of their material deals with the U.K., most of the themes are universal. "The issues that are wrong in England are wrong everywhere," says lead vocalist Mark. Levelling the Land also includes "One Way," a song heavily played on the radio.
