ADVISOR’S COLUMN—A HEALTHY CHAPTER

Carol Toussie Weingarten, PhD, RN, ANEF

HEALTHY was the theme of the April, 2013 convention of the National Student Nurses’ Association, and “healthy” well describes SNAP-Villanova. The chapter begins the 2013-2014 academic year true to goals of education, professional development, service and the formation of networks and friendships and committed to excellence. The 2012-2013 academic year had many achievements. Meetings featured educational programs with such outstanding speakers. State and national conventions brought large groups of SNAP-Villanovans to Nemacolin, PA and to Charlotte, NC to meet and learn from nursing’s current and future leaders, to participate in vibrant Houses of Delegates and to meet potential employers and others in the Exhibit Halls. The chapter’s Resolutions and Legislation Committee produced an outstanding “Joining Forces” resolution, passed at both state and national levels and “rocked the vote” with an effective nonpartisan voter registration drive. Villanovans served on the state and national Resolutions Committee and were again elected to the state Board. Villanova served as a mentor chapter to students at Harcum College, as they formed their own chapter in 2013. Harcum students attended meetings and the state SNAP convention with Villanova, and the relationship that evolved has become the model for the state SNAP’s new “Adopt a Chapter” program.

SNAP-Villanova’s service projects included mass vision screening at the McDaniel School, monthly projects at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House and work with the Special Olympics, Dream for Eileen 5 k event, the Coach Andy Talley Bone Marrow Donor Drive, and the College of Nursing’s Discover Nursing project for high school juniors. The chapter’s achievements were recognized by state awards for Chapter Excellence, Advisor of the Year, and Newsletter, by the NSNA’s designation as one of only 14 national “Stellar Schools,” and by awards from Villanova University for “Most Philanthropic Project, shared with the football team for the Coach Andy Talley Bone Marrow Donor Drive, and for Advisor. SNAP-Villanovans again won scholarship awards for excellence from the state SNAP and the NSNA. The 2013-2014 academic year promises the continuation of the projects and planning that define excellence for the

chapter and the beginning of new initiatives that bring continued growth and member involvement.

One key factor underlies all the activities, achievements and awards: SNAP-Villanovans themselves. Generic, “alternate,” and BSN Express students are united in SNAP-Villanova, one of the most diverse groups on campus. Through SNAP-Villanova, enduring friendships at Villanova and beyond are formed among people who might never have had the chance to know each other well. As the new year begins, SNAP-Villanova welcomes the incoming BSN Express, transfer and freshmen students. Along with returning members, they continue the legacy of the newest alumni whose leadership, succession planning and mentoring have ensured that SNAP-Villanova stays in every way…..healthy.

LEAD WORSHOP REVIEW

By Meghan Long and Marianna Cesareo, Co-Athletics Liaisons

This past March, Meghan Long and Marianna Cesareo attended the LEAD Workshop hosted by the Student Nurses’ Association of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This workshop is primarily designed for freshmen and sophomores of SNAP and is designed to enhance their ability to lead and show them how nurses are leaders in and out of the hospital. SNAP members across the state attended this annual event and all were eager to learn about how to be better leaders as nursing students. Many speakers at the workshop were Villanova graduates, such as

AnnMarie Papa, DNP, RN, CEN, clinical director of the emergency department at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), and Cindy Schmus, MSN, RN, CRNP, a nurse practitioner at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Lecture topics included different kinds of leader personalities, information on what resolutions are, cultural communications and health care legislation. It was very inspiring to see these Villanova nursing alumni and others have such important leadership roles in nursing. They also had lots of enthusiasm for the upcoming leaders in SNAP. Attending the LEAD Workshop was informative for both Meghan and Marianna, and they hope to pass on what they learned to their fellow SNAP members and classmates in nursing school. Villanova plans again to sponsor chapter members to the next LEAD workshop in March, 2014.

NSNA CONVENTION IN CHARLOTTE

By Emily Neiderhauser, SNAP Vice President

The SNAP Villanova Delegation traveled to Charlotte, NC at the beginning

of April to attend the National Student Nurses Association 61st annual

convention. Twenty-three members of SNAP Villanova were in attendance

at this exciting event and Villanova nursing student’s really put their best

foot forward and were outstanding participants in the resolutions hearings

and identifying strong candidates to represent student nurses at the

national level. The theme of this year’s annual convention was the healthy

campaign: healing, enlightening and loving the healthy you. The opening

night began with a fun Zumba party to get all nurses in attendance up on

their feet! Throughout the resolutions hearings and business meetings, the

president played various videos to get us moving and be healthier nurses.

The SNAP Villanova Resolutions Committee authored and presented the

resolution, Joining Forces: (Check the actual title of the resolution). The

resolution passed with an astounding 99% approval from the nursing

student delegates across the country. This resolution is on its way to the

White House because of its incredible cause and the efforts of the

Resolutions Committee. The convention was filled with wonderful focus

sessions, inspirational keynote and endnote speakers, and was truly

inspiring to all nursing students. The SNAP Villanova delegation is so

thankful to our advisor Dr. Weingarten, who presented focus sessions about her experiences as a civilian

volunteer at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, and President Ashleigh Morris who made

this convention such a success! We are looking forward to next year’s annual convention in Nashville, TN.

wheel, skip, or prance with us to Nashville, site of the 2014 NSNA convention.  SNAP-Villanova is supporting NSNA's theme,

Healing, Enlightening, And Loving The Healthy You (HEALTHY) by encouraging everyone to be active each day wherever s/he is!

As of August 26, 2013 there are 228 days until April 9, 2014, the start of the NSNA convention and 801 miles from Villanova University to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. For those starting August 26, that’s 7,026 -8,782 steps, about 3.51 miles per day,  based on 2,000-2,500 steps per mile.

You'll get there "sooner" if you continue onward to reach the healthy recommendation of 10,000 steps per day. (Check estimates of number of steps per mile, based on your height for a more accurate number.)

If you live farther than 801 miles from Nashville add your miles and "call for us."  If you live closer, come back and "meet us."

Whether or not you attend the convention, plan an activity that has a virtual destination of the convention.

See you in Nashville!

You can log your miles on walktonashville.wordpress.com and check for progress updates. OR keep your own record.  Whatever you choose, be active!  (Questions about the website? Contact Vera Shaw ([email protected])

THE EXTERN EXPERIENCE

By Karley McBreen, SNAP Ronald McDonald House Co-Chair

During the summer of 2013 I had the opportunity to work as a Nurse

Extern at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for 10 weeks on 9-

South which is a Neurology and General Pediatric floor. Jenna Lindsay

was the RN who worked as my preceptor throughout the program. As

my preceptor, she was committed to making every minute of every

shift count as a learning opportunity for me.  Working in a partnership

with Jenna allowed for me to gain a deeper understanding of how to

provide high quality, family-centered care in addition to learning about

various diagnoses, medications, and much more. However, all

members of the healthcare team were very enthusiastic about having

Nurse Externs on the unit and every provider was excited to teach

and show me something new. For instance, a physician allowed me to

observe a Lumbar Puncture, and nurses invited me to classes they were teaching on CPR and restraints.

Throughout the program I found it very beneficial to be able to apply information that I learned in the

classroom to the care I provided in the clinical setting yet at the same time it was very interesting to hear

of a new diagnosis. For example, over the course of the summer I cared for a patient with Guillain-Barré

syndrome which was covered in class, but I also had patients with Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis

which was a new diagnosis to me.

Furthermore, the Nurse Extern Program at CHOP provided a day during the program to listen to a guest

speaker discuss Autism which greatly expanded my knowledge in that area, especially as it relates to

providing quality care to patients with Autism. The second half of this day we worked as a team with the

other Nurse Externs on our unit to form a poster of research articles and information on a topic relevant

to our floor. Since the floor I worked on was a Neurology floor, our topic was Epilepsy, therefore we found

information regarding different classifications of seizures, the link between Epilepsy and Autism, common

medications used for Epilepsy, in addition to information about the Ketogenic Diet. The Nurse Extern

Program also provided the Nurse Externs with a day to observe a different unit at CHOP. I was able to

tour and observe at Karabots Pediatric Care Center located in West Philadelphia. It is a CHOP primary

care facility and throughout the day I learned about the different programs offered at this center in

addition to becoming more aware of the various opportunities available to nurses and nurse practitioners.

As the program came to a close, the majority of Nurse Externs were asked to continue working at CHOP

as either a Sitter or Nurse Technician which is a fantastic way to maintain skills learned over the summer

and build new skills throughout the academic year.

Page 7: Snapshots Fall 2013

Overall, I could not be more grateful for having such an incredible learning experience at CHOP this

summer as I feel that I have gained an immense amount of knowledge and experience in pediatric

nursing. It is because of our Villanova mentors like Dr. Weingarten that nursing students have the drive

and confidence to step out of our comfort zone and immerse ourselves in a new learning environment

filled with opportunity to grow as individuals, leaders and professionals during our journey to become a

Villanova Nurse.

PSNA LEADERSHIP SUMMIT MAY 2013

By Meghan Long, Co-Athletics Liaison

This past spring, I attended the PSNA Annual Summit at DeSales University in Center Valley,

Pennsylvania. Due to Hurricane Sandy last fall, the Summit was re-scheduled to May 2013. This time

interfered with my SNAP-Villanova advisor and PSNA member Carol Toussie Weingarten’s return to

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. I attended the Summit in her place and represented

SNAP Villanova. I met with PSNA members on the board such as Chief Executive Officer Betsy Snook,

and president of the PSNA Christine M. Alichnie. All of the members I met were very welcoming and

willing to share their experiences in nursing with me. The Summit focused on the nursing dynamics in

the hospital and how we can go about resolving conflict between fellow nurses. The educational sessions

were very informative and showed me that we as student nurses have the power to change the nursing

atmosphere in the hospital for the better. While nurses today are strong leaders and advocates for their

patients, we can still work on how we handle conflict when it arises in the hospital. We as student nurses

have the opportunity to not only improve the atmosphere between nurses, but ultimately improve the

patients experience in the hospital.

NSNA LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP 2013

By Liz Long, Legislative Coordinator and State Board Member, and Meghan Long, Co-Athletics Liaison

This past July we had the opportunity to attend the 2013 NSNA Leadership Conference at the Mount

Sinai Medical Center in New York City. We met student nurses from Maryland, Connecticut, Florida,

Georgia and some of our fellow SNAP members from Pennsylvania. The presentations focused on the

missions and goals of the NSNA and how we as student nurses can improve our state and local chapters.

SNAP Villanova’s award-winning faculty advisor Dr. Carol Toussie Weingarten did a presentation at the

workshop about developing a healthy relationship with your chapter advisor. After Dr. Weingarten’s

presentation, there was an additional presentation about the legislative opportunities in NSNA. We

learned that student nurses can have a voice through resolutions are presented at NSNA Convention.

Overall this workshop showed how the goals and vision of the NSNA are accomplished through state and

local chapters.
