Near-Term Charter Work Items (12-18 months)

(1) Green Storage Metrics—Identification and development of metrics by which energy consumption and efficiency can be measured for the purposes of supporting development of energy-efficient products, end-user customer evaluation, and regulatory standards development.(2) Establish a method for results collection against the green storage metrics.(3) Green Storage Standards Development—Once a set of metrics are developed and socialized, the development of benchmarks for storage technologies can be identified and advanced.(4) Create customer and vendor education materials in the value of, and process for, efficiency measurements.(5) Provide technical recommendations to standards-setting organizations, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders regarding the technical benchmarks for analyzing the impact of storage on the environment.

Longer-Term Charter Work Items (18-26 months)

Operational Measurements—Identify the requirements for exporting energy measurements to external management systems. These requirements shall be made available to the SMI community for further work.Standards for power consumption interface controls – development of standards for instrumentation interfaces (such as throttles and thresholds) that enable active control of storage system energy consumption in real-time.Other Technical Work items would include technical white papers,reference models, seminars, and other efforts that would provide a technical foundation to those who are addressing the environmentaspects of digital storage and technology in general.
