With fantastic snorkelling sites just a short boat trip from the resort and the helpful tuition of the activities staff your guests will experience close encounters with an amazing array of coral. The islands fringing reef showcases 1,100 species of fish and 340 of the 350 known species of reef coral. Located only a ten minute boat ride from the property, a cluster of approximately 90-100 Giant Clams is a must to explore. These incredible animals are estimated to be around 30 years old and have a fascinating story. Activities Manager, Mark Reggazoli considers it a 'must' for every guest on the island to experience these natural wonders and even teaches non swimmers the art of snorkelling. Mark says it is enormously satisfying to see people experiencing this activity, often only once in a life time. In addition to the snorkelling available daily at the resort, there are excellent dive sites available for the trained diver and the resort does give instruction in 'Discover Scuba Diving'. The channel at the southern point of Orpheus is believed to host the reef’s largest range of soft corals. The fathomless wonders of the Outer Reef are just a 40 minute boat charter away. As well as the above activities the tide line at Orpheus is also fantastic for beach combing and high tide viewing. A myriad of sea creatures can be discovered at close range at low tide and in the evenings from the jetty you can glimpse various types of rays resting in the shallow waters. All in all everything you want to see on the Great Barrier Reef can be enjoyed at Orpheus Island. Recently there was daily sightings of whales on their return journey to the colder southern waters. However whatever time of year you decide to send your clients to the reef they will find welcoming, experienced staff dedicated to ensuring experiences not found anywhere else.
