the island, some even from their homes. #4 was piloted by St. Joseph Island’s own Captain Patrice Maurice Powis-Clement.

This made the viewing an extra special experience for many, especially his friends and family. Hav-ing only vague memories of air shows we weren’t really sure what to expect, especially after a series of unfortunate delays, but the back and forth was all but forgotten once they were finally spotted in the sky.

It turns out the web tracker worked quite well predicting their arrival within a few minutes, you could see they traveled at over 700km from Thunder Bay to reach St. Joseph Island in less than one hour. After a few fly bys over the Land-ing, they then made their way to Sault Ste. Marie.

If you didn’t make it out we can safely say you have indeed missed out and there’s no way around that. Hopefully they will return again in the future but everyone who did manage to keep an eye on when they would arrive seemed to be simply thrilled to have this experience. Captain (Patrice) Maurice Powis-Clement attended the Branch to present a Canadian Forces SNOW-BIRDS framed lithograph released to acknowledge their 50th Anniversary as a flight squadron, 1971 – 2021. Receiving the lithograph on behalf of the Membership was President Comrade Dave Pearse and Comrade John Hooper. An unexpected presen-tation was made by Major (retired) Comrade Dan Campbell to Captain Patrice of a framed picture showing the first aircraft to reach the North Pole, which Dan piloted. The picture first appeared in the Legion Magazine in 1975: Operation Frozen Tucker “The Pole” April 26, 1974. The photo was taken by Comrade Dan! Approximately 25 Legion Br. 374 Executive and Veterans were in attendance.

After many delays, five of the Snowbirds, with Cap-tain Powis-Clement piloting jet #4, did a fly-by of the Richards Landing waterfront on Monday August 23, 2021 at 7:55 p.m. Thank you Captain Patrice for facilitating this fly-by and Comrade John Hooper for your efforts in making it happen.

On August 12, 2021 Hayden and Logan McIn-tosh, two inspiring youth from Newmarket, visited the Branch and surprised us with a do-nation of $151.00! They are the Grandchildren of Comrade Terry Thomson who accompanied them. Hayden and Logan raised the funds by painting rocks and selling them to relatives gathered at a family get together on the North Shore. Patrice, Adrien and Neirdre would like to thank those who made the time to come out and get a glimpse of part of our RCAF Anniversary Snow-bird team (and our #4). He was YOURS for those brief minutes!!

You waited a mere day!!

For our real “Island” family, those homesteaders who grew up with us…you certainly know a days wait is nothing when we waited 10 years to “find the recipe” to create Patrice…!!

You all now can take ownership of the life of a Snowbird pilot (they too felt it was an awful LONG day).

You have experienced what the pilots, techs, support team and families face each day…we all learn to live with last minute changes!

Previously to the Snowbirds, Patrice was instruct-ing on the Harvard.

As a student, one of the perks is being able to plan cross country flights home!

When he had students from the east, I would say, make sure you stop in the Sault for fuel, and I’ll meet you!!

Haha on me…I soon learned…do not bake any treat that cannot be frozen…plans change almost mid air!!!

We as a community have been very very lucky to have the team agree to this little diversion and grace us with their elite flying! Patrice has a gift of becoming one with the machine…no matter what aircraft he flies, or truck or tractor he operates!

I say just go for it and enjoy every second he can as equipment can fail, tractors can roll, your existence may come to an abrupt end, but at least you were doing what you LOVE!

Thank you again for the wonderful show of sup-port, the Legion for chasing down the flyby and a BIG thumbs up, to the Township fire department, who stood by just like a REAL air show! I tell the team continually, we are a very important family with long roots in the community! I’m not sure that line will get us another flyby anytime soon…BUT please, someone…get an application in NOW for next season!
