SO¢ AMERICAN · Hale Center Junior High and Middle School recently were awarded a grant from Wal-Marl The grant was the second in as many years for Hale Center Schools. Through the generosity of Wal-Mart Hale Center Junior High received $2595 from the Wal-Mart Educational Grant. The grant money will . be used to continue the upgrading of the Junior High Library. Last year, Junior High Principal Speck Cox applied for and received $ 1000 from the grant to initiate a three step course in improving the Junior High Iibrary/learning center. With last year's grant and malChing funds from the principal's fund, an IBM computer and monitor, printer and player were added to the Iibrary/learning center. Also included in last year's purchase was software that included a complete GroiJIer.. Encyclopedia, Thesaurus, Dictionary, Atlas and mammals. . . He W08 born in Bloss()m and moved to Hale Center from Pelersburg in 1957. he married Mary Stephens on May 25, 1957, in Hale Center. He W08 a relired fanner and worked for Stapleton Pump Co. and Herny Tire Co. in Plainview until his retirement in 1989. Following hi. retirement, he operated T.L. 's Lawn Mower Repair in Hale Center. He Was a member of the First Baptist Church.

A son, Hubert. died in 1978. Survivors include his wife; two "lIlS,

Larry of Dallas and Terry of Coppell; " daughter, Susan Belyeu of Hale Center; a sister, Eva Bell of Scrivner of Abilene; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Don Maddin. "' roy Brown, Charles King, Uavid Rowell. J.C. Bourlaml and Keith Pryor.

last week 30-36 to the Crosbyton Chiefs. The Owls were victims of several unusual plays which allowed the opponent to stay in the game in which allowed the opponent to stay in the game in which normally they would have been in deep trouble.

In the 1st quarter the Owls drove Ihe baJl well but fumbled on a sweep, the ball was caught out of the air and returned 50 yards for the Chids first score 6"().

The Owls came back on the passing of Danny Aguirre. Runningof Jeronimo Luna, and Jeffrey Martinel. The Owls make it 14·6 on a 48 yard pass from Aguirre to Matt Thomasoverthemiddle. The defense held and the Owls returned 10 offense.

Danny Aguirre again weill to the air to R.J. Luera for a 32 yard pass play. JefCrey Martinez added the extra point to lie the score 14-14.

On the ensueing kickoff, the Chief runner gol 10 Ihe outside arad went the diSllmce Cor aTD; Chiefs 22-14 over the Owls.

Showinga lot of character, the Owls

fought back and the Ihe next drive after an interception by Danny "guirre Jeffrey Martinez went over from 7 yards to make it 22·20. The extra poinl was good by kronimo Luna and it's a tic game at 22·22.

With little time before the half Danny Aguirre hit Man Thomas for a 55 yard gain but he was touched at the 2 yard line with :02 left in the half. TheChiefs were at Ihis point in Ihe game after being pounded by the Owls defense to only I first down in the first half but to have 22 poinlS. The ChiefS. look the opening kickoff and drove 60 yards for a score to make il 30-22.

After a fumbled punt, the Chiefs score again in the 3rd quarter to make it 36-22. The 4th quarter rolled around with the Owls trailing by 14. A couple offumbles recovered by Abel Luna and Shawn Ray and another interception by RJ. Luera gave the Owls life. Matt Thomas the Owls big T-End caught anotherT.D. andJcffrey Martinez added the extra point 10 make it 30-36.

The game was exciting and well excuted at times: ' Shinning for the Owls were Aguirrc the quarterback who threw for close to 200 yards. Malt Thomas and R.J. Luera catching the bell and Jeronimo Luna always pounding out the runs up the middle. The Owls relum this week to face Petersburg and .• , hopefully cut out a few cosily mistakes. •.
