On with the Tech Session…. Dan Dempsey was the first “in the fish-bowl” for the morning. Dan is a “Glassman”, which is also his email moniker, and he began by explaining the characteristic differences in fiberglass over the C1 years. Dan then got into body sanding, paint striping, body strengtheners, cleaning prior to paint, and on and on. The moreDan talked the more questions arose. Clearly, painting a C1 is not for the novice, if you want to get it right.

(right) John (Little John) Englehardt, who spoke at tech session #1 about C1 seat construction, continued with a discussion on rubber

weather stripping for sealing doors, trunks, and other locations. John is extremely knowledgeable with materials as his business is contract work with automobile companies for show concept cars. He continued his discussion with noise reduction, heat sealing, old glue removal and reapplication. John has a business called Interior Concepts and his knowledge is extensive after working in this field for many years.

After lunch, Steve Clifford was the third speaker of the day. Steve covered topics concerning C1 bell housings and the changes of the C1 years, followed by a long discussion on the C1 clutch linkage configuration and operation, specifics mounting details on the starter interface onto the various bell housings and completed the day with the starter connection to the battery and the support strap which connects between the starter front and fastens to the engine block.

Steve provided the audience handouts describing the various components of the clutch linkage. The handouts depicted the removal and installation of the large spring on the linkage and the adjustment of the linkage to properly use the spring with clutch pedal operation. This topic brought many experiences (story’s) from the audience on the removal and installation of this large spring. The removal process can be dangerous but using a proper technique makes the task very simple.

Jim Lundal was the final speaker of the day. Jim’s topic was formulated around his personal experience and how a problem was discovered and repaired. The topic was a review of the C1 engine starting electrical circuit. Jim had diagramed the starting circuit separately, after removing all the other circuitry, which tended to simplify the presentation to the audience. Jim also provided a handout to the audience and he explained the circuit component by component along with the simple diagram. The problem Jim had repaired, was a 15 year problem of difficult engine starting. This problem had finally got to the level of not driving the car for fear the battery would “drag” down the before the engine started.

Jim also explained the solenoid internal functions and how wear can contribute to additional starting problems.

Calendar of Coming Events in our Area:(So. Cal. SACC Events in Bold and Italic Print, NCCC Events in purple)

The SCSACC Tech Sessions are organized by membership chairman, Chip Werstein, and are an extremely popular forum to learn about your C1. These meetings have a informality and for many, are what belonging to SACC is about, spreading the knowledge of these cars, networking amongst members for parts, learning who to ask for technical knowledge and determining recommended vendors to perform work.

No question or experience is to trivial for listening and discussing. This type of open forum was stressed over and over to make all attendee’s comfortable. Everyone wants to keep these jewel’s running and to “Save the Wave”.

Thanks is extended to Chip Werstein, Littlejohn Englehardt for the use of his business facilities and Jim Lundal for obtaining the chairs and food for the session.

More on C1 Rear Springs!Following our initial Tech Session, and Chip Werstein’s “rear spring description”, SCSACC member Wally Carroll located two rear springs for his 1960 C1. Wally’s is a late (July 1960) car and the springs depicted indicate the spring part number to the left and the dates to the right. These two springs have part numbers 3751438 and the date is (28E0) May 28, 1960. As noted by Chip, these numbers are not visible when when the springs are installed. Wally Carroll’s car had replacement springs which provided the incentive to locate the correct items.

Tech Session Gratitude!!

Newsletter & Tech Advisors.Rt. 66 Travelers

A contingent of SACC travelers have been negotiating Route 66 from Chicago and were met by several local Chapter members as they entered the So. Cal. Area. The meeting went well with 9 cars on tour and 6 local cars joined in SO CAL. There were 3 cars from Vancouver, BC, 4 from the Seattle area and 2 from New York. The group traveled from the Northwest area to Chicago beginning of Rt. 66 and have been driving the route for a week, or so. More coverage will be made on this meeting in a January Newsletter.

Red Line Car Show WinnersThe following information was received on the Sept. 25th Red Line Corvette Car Show.Hi , You may have received this already but in case you haven't. Last Sunday, Sept. 25th was the Red Line corvette clubs car show in thousand Oaks. The weather was really perfect and the SACC club had a good turn out. Most of the cars that came placed. Steve and Loretta Conway brought their 1957 trailer and '57 chevy display to form a corvette camp for all of us to relax in and enjoy. refreshments were plentiful. This was really appreciated knowing that he was not able to compete or win an award with his chevy display at an all corvette show. Those that did win trophies were Chip Werstein-1st place, George Tuers-1st place, Steve Conway-1st place, Mike Gibbons new member)-3rd place, John Engelhardt-3rd place, Vic Preisler-1st place, Joel Berk-2nd place, Doug Prince-2nd place, Dave Jacobson-1st place. There was a mix up with the judges tally sheets and in the end Dale Schaum probably won 3rd place. Since the car that won didn't even get judged. OOPS...If I have forgotten someone , sorry, I am just learning names and faces as we are pretty new to the group.Best regards , Barbara Tuers

SCSACC Member Profile.. I asked Chip Werstein to submit a short write up on his interests. The following are his words. Chip is the SCSACC Membership Chairman. (editor)

My fascination with Corvettes goes back over 50 years. In the early 50’s, my father was driving and racing XK120 Jaguars when our neighbor purchased a new Corvette in 1953. It took me 5 years to convince my father to buy a Corvette. When I was 12, he bought my mother the fist of several Corvettes she would own – a 1958.

I purchased my 1st Corvette in 1968 soon after I graduated from college. It was a low mileage ’64 Coupe. Since then, I have owned over 30 Corvettes. The restoration of my 270hp ’57 (pictured here) was completed in February 2002. I pursued this car for 26 years. It was originally owned by a young golf pro in Laguna Beach. After a minor accident in the late spring of 1958, he traded it on a new ’58 Corvette. The car ended up on Moon Mullins High Performance used car lot in Van Nuys in August 1958. It was purchased by a 16 year old high school student. He had the car lowered, added headers, lake pipes, scatter shield, traction masters, chrome reversed wheels, 4:56 posi, Sun Tach, hard top, aluminum flywheel and reversed the 3 speed shift pattern. He then had the car painted by von Dutch. The car was drag raced at San Fernando and Lions drag strips. After only one year, he traded it in on a ’55 Chevy.

The car was then purchased by a young man in the Van Nuys area who owned it for a very short period of time before selling it to his brother-in-law who drove it daily for approximately 4 years. In 1964, the brother-in-law decided to strip the paint off the car. It then sat idle for the next 34 years.

I have owned this ’57 Corvette since 1998. I first heard about this car in 1973 but it took me 19 years to find it. Ironically, it was located only about three blocks from my home. It then took another six years for the owner to finally sell it to me. I have returned the car to it’s original colors and condition. After 41 years and 4 previous owners, mechanically, this ’57 was completely original and had been driven only about 40,000 miles. It has earned two NCRS top flight awards and is driven only occasionally around my neighborhood.

I also currently own a ’60, 245hp, ’61 F.I. and ’62 F.I. I feel certain that there are still more Corvettes in my future.

SACC NATIONAL CONVENTION-Carlisle, PA (August 21-25 2005)“It’s official, we are now the SO. CAL Chapter of SACC” (factoid: There are 6 SACC Chapters and So. Cal. Is the largest,

73 members and 97 cars)John Costales and Bruce Fuhrman attended the 2005 SACC Convention in Carlisle, PA and received our Chapter banner at the annual banquet from the SACC President Noland Adams. The turnout was quite good with approximately 100 people attending. The entire event was hosted by the Mid Atlantic Chapter. We also found out that there is new Arizona Chapter which becomes # 6. The Mid Atlantic Chapter did a great job setting up the convention with driving tours to Gettysburg, mini car show, tech sessions, Chinese auction, lots of raffle prizes and lots of nice awards. The final day was Thursday and the Carlisle Corvette show and auction started on Friday continuing through the weekend. If you have never been to Corvette Show in Carlisle we highly recommend it. After seeing the prices bid at the auction Bruce had to come home and increase his insurance coverage on his ’54! One of our members from Colorado brought a beautiful white ’55 that was just restored and was judged as a 98 point NCRS car. It sold at the Carlisle Auction for $130,000.There were several topics discussed at the General Meeting that were considered noteworthy; SACC Board was unanimously re-elected.The next National meeting will be held at Truckee, CA , 31 July- 6 August 2006, just prior to “Hot August Nights”. The 2007 National meeting will be held in Bloomington, IL. It was suggested that SO. CAL Chapter be considered as the host for the 2009 National meeting. We received a newly released copy of the SACC Policy Manual. John Costales brought it back and will give it to the Chapter Secretary (Larry Pearson) for future reference.SACC has a master insurance policy which covers us on Chapter sanctioned events, tours, meetings, tech sessions, etc. In order to assure we have coverage for each event it must be published in our Newsletter or a flyer. The SACC Treasurer Larry Richter [email protected] 320-274-4241 (Washington State) should be notified in advance so he can place the event on his list of all SACC Chapter activities which is supplied to the Insurance carrier each year. This should be done by our person sponsoring the event. It was also pointed out that the Chapter cannot sell alcohol at any event or their insurance is void.Ken Amrick, the ON SOLID GROUND Editor, requested people to send him technical articles since he is running low. After much discussion about judging at SACC Conventions it was decided to leave everything as is with no judging, just wash and show. Some members were proposing a NCRS “type” judging. It was unanimously voted down. National SACC Logo: The Natl. SACC retains all rights to the SACC logo. By itself, it may only be used with permission of the Natl. Board. However, individual chapters may add their chapter identification to the logo without requiring Natl. SACC approval. The intent is to allow our chapter to modify the Natl. logo (as we have done) such that it can be used on chapter apparel which we sell, distributed flyers and the like.

The 3 pictures, 1 – 3, were taken at the SACC National Convention of a ’55 which was purchased at the Carlisle auction for $130K, by a SACC member. $16,250/cylinder 1

The last SCSACC tour was to Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Valley with its beautiful scenery, to retrace the “Sideways”movie trek. Now this latest planned tour, picked a gorgeous day on Malibu Beach. What’s Next, how can we keep making it better?

SCSACC Vice President John Costales organized this picturesque spot and groups of C1’s converged from all over the So. Cal. Area to meet and enjoy the day. The selected spot was the parking lot of the Paradise Cove Café, a short distance north of the Malibu settlement. This location has been visited by many movie people over the many years of its existence, and, this is also the site where Jim Rockford had his mobile home for the “Rockford Files” TV series. Anyway, this is what someone told me, so I hope it is right.

After arriving at 10AM, or we would lose our parking spot, a couple of hours was spent kicking tires and meeting other members. Around noon time everyone drifted into the Paradise Cove Café and got a meal. Afterward, more kicking tires and everyone departed to their corner of paradise (home). It was a relaxed day and everyone got to drive and talk cars which was the purpose for the outing. Thank you John for your organization. Most of the participants didn’t know that this place existed.

Going to Malibu….And nobody brought a Surfboard!

Reportedly, this is the location that the “Rockford Files”trailer was parked.

“The Beach Scene” before noon. The arrivals claim their spot of sand.

Sand n’ Surf Continued…….When the call went out to convene for a group photo, several were missing because they got another call, “Nude girl on beach, with no tan lines”. When this group of guys did arrive, they did confirm it, but nobody had brought a camera to supply the SCOOP Newsletter.
