Our Mission North Hills Community Outreach is an interfaith-based organization

addressing the needs of people in crisis, hardship and poverty.

We’re Growing On May 31, 2019 we officially moved into our new North Boroughs Office in Avalon.

In fiscal year 2018-19, NHCO provided 30,407 services to

3,612 local families in need.

NHCO opened its first Bellevue satellite office at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in 1997, and then moved to AGH Sub-urban General in 2001.

“The advantages of moving our NB office and food pantry to Greenstone UMC have far exceeded our expectations! We are more visible, more accessible and more integrated in the community - and staff, clients and volunteers all are thriving in our new warm and welcoming site, ” said North Boroughs Outreach Manager Nancy Jones.

This October we invited the community for an open house and tour of the new location.

“It was wonderful to share our mission and vision with everyone who attended our North Boroughs Open House - and to show off our new space which enables us to serve more families with compassion and respect,” Nancy added.

In Memory of Ruth GrahamOur beloved volunteer, board member and cherished friend passed away on October 27, 2019.

District 1 Difference Maker Award WinnerCongratulations to Volunteer Maresa Saunders

“Ruth was truly a blessing to NHCO and to all of us who had the privilege and honor of working with and knowing her.

She embodied the spirit of NHCO and our mission in our communities,” - Sharon Wolf, Executive Director

Her warm, bright smile greets visitors when she volunteers at the front desk in our Millvale Satellite Office. Her quirky sense of humor puts the "fun" in fundraiser.

During the summer of 2018 when a destructive flood washed through Millvale, her get-it-done attitude helped bring relief to many of the victims. For her volunteerism during that difficult time, Maresa was given the District 1 Difference Maker Award by Allegheny County Councilman Tom Baker.

Working under intense conditions, Maresa helped distribute cleaning supplies and donations while comforting the flood victims with compassion.

“I just wanted to help those that came in. So many had lost everything,” Maresa said.

Ruth joined our board of directors in January of 1994, and served as Vice President from 2000 - 2002 and President from 2002 - 2004. She became Board Emeritus in 2008. She also served on several board committees, including Food & Emergency Services, Special Events & Fundraising, Strategic Planning, Community Relations, Fund Development and Development & Communication.

At our Allison Park Office she donated her time at the food pantry, and assisted with office duties.

Among her many accomplishments as a volunteer, she coordinated gift wrapping for customers at Northway Mall in exchange for donations to NHCO. And she helped supervise 200+ NHCO volunteers at the 2007 US Open at The Oakmont Country Club.

Food and Emergency Service Food insecurity and general financial hardship are the top two reasons people sought help at NHCO.

NHCO responded to two disasters

We assisted 329 families affected by flooding in the following ways:- Cleaned out and sanitized basements - Placed fans and dehumidifiers to dry out basements- Replaced furnaces and other appliances- Repaired a sewer line- Provided utility assistance- Provided gift cards for household items

We assisted 30 families affected by a fire by:- Providing gift cards for household items and clothes - Opening our food pantries to the victims.

Through a variety of services, NHCO helped

to live healthy and safely in their homes.

We provided

12,140 services for our seniors, including:

Support and Resources After an individual’s emergency needs are met, our resource programs help with job searches,

education assistance and legal help. We also refer clients to other agencies and programs for additional support if needed.

Transportation Assistance Program NHCO sells donated vehicles through auction and uses the funds

to help low-income families and individuals with transportation needs.

323 people received

transportation assistance in one of the following ways:

- Financial assistance for car repairs- Insurance payments- Car payments or down payments- Bus passes- Gas cards and fees for ride sharing services- AAA membership- Car seats- Individual consultations and referrals.

David could not bring his newborn baby home from the hospital until he had a safety seat for his car. Through our Transportation Assistance Program, we were able to buy David a seat so little Jackson could come home.

5,222 pounds of organic produce was harvested from NHCO’s garden and distributed to our three food pantries
