At the ver- beginning o/ the lesson, the teacher as*ed st!dents i/ the-
*ne hat research as and i/ the- had ever done research be/ore #he
lesson as introd!ced b- teacher sa-ing that the- ere going to be learning
abo!t China toda- and /or the net to ee*s introd!ced the lesson #he
teacher also introd!ced their Co!ntries )esearch >ro7ect A/ter st!d-ing
China, st!dents ere going to be able to research an- co!ntr- that the-
anted to "he e6lained to the st!dents that it as im6ortant to 6a-
attention to ho the- ere doing research /or China, in order to s!ccess/!l in
their on research 6ro7ects ' tho!ght it as creative that the teacher told the
st!dents that the- ere going to be researchers /or the net month #his
seemed to get st!dents ecited abo!t the 6ro7ect and di=erent co!ntries #he
teacher connected this to China b- as*ing st!dents hat the- *ne abo!t
China #his hel6ed connect their 6rior *noledge and transition into the
lesson
#he 6!r6ose o/ this lesson as so that st!dents co!ld learn abo!t
China and ho do research on a co!ntr- "t!dents ere aare o/ hat an
econom- as and hat 6art o/ ?nited "tates econom- consists o/ "t!dents
also *ne that China as on the other side o/ the orld and that it is di=erent
/rom the ?nited "tates ' tho!ght this as im6ortant in/ormation /or the
teacher to go over at the beginning o/ the lesson to ens!re !nderstanding 't
is eas- to /orget that st!dents are sometimes !naare o/ other co!ntries and
6arts o/ the orld M- teacher made this 6art o/ the lesson seem so eas- 't
as eas- to tell that she as 6re6ared and /olloed the st!dent5s lead based

M- teacher ta!ght the st!dents ne material b- reading a nonction
boo* abo!t China called Welcome to China b- Car-n @enner #he teacher and
st!dents read onl- a co!6le 6ages o/ this boo* together #he teacher !sed a
choral reading techni!e here the teacher o!ld read and then the
st!dents o!ld contin!e reading here the teacher le/t o= ' had never
observed this techni!e being !sed be/ore and ' tho!ght that it as ver-
e=ective in this case 't *e6t st!dents5 attention and /oc!s on the teacher and
content o/ hat as being read A/ter the reading and disc!ssion as
nished, st!dents moved bac* to their seats to com6lete their or*sheets
One thing that ' noted as that the st!dents ere able to access the 6ages
the- had read online on their Canvas Moodle%li*e 6ages; mod!le ' thin* this
as an im6ortant move b- the teacher beca!se the st!dents ere able to go
bac* and search /or the in/ormation i/ the- had /orgotten it
#his lesson as 6robabl- one o/ the shorter lessons that ' observed
thro!gh m- 'M. to%ee* e6erience #he teacher didn5t necessaril- close
the lesson she 7!st had them transition their things to the lang!age arts
lesson "he e6lained to me a/ter that "ocial "t!dies is given little to no time
/or instr!ction so she s!ee9es it in the best that she can ' thin* is ver-
res6ectable beca!se some teachers do not even tr- to teach "ocial "t!dies at
all ' believe that the st!dents ere able to learn a lot abo!t China in a short
6eriod o/ time
&hat ' too* aa- /rom this lesson that ill im6act m- /!t!re "ocial
"t!dies teaching o!ld be that ' ant to teach lots o/ hands on and
interactive m!ltidisci6linar- activities ' ant st!dents to be e6osed to hands
on and virt!al activities, as ell as non%ction tets that are 7!st im6ortant '
