EXPERIENCE

WHAT IS IT? We are an interdisciplinary team dedicated to Social Architecture and Engineering. We employ our creative energies, knowledge and idealism by en-gaging developing communities.

We focus on sustainable and equitable design of the built envi-ronment ranging from buildings, urban design/planning and infra-structures.

Over recent years, a small but active micro-generation of Harvard GSD students have worked collaboratively and progres-sively to re-engage their design education with real communi-ties outside the studio. Much of this work has emerged from the student group Social Change and Activism (SoCA), a hori-zontal organization of GSD students committed to proactive social change. SoCA provides the infrastructure and network of like-minded students to pursue ambitious projects that bring quality design to local Boston communities and beyond. Recent design projects incubated by SoCA include a teen cen-ter in Lowell, Massachusetts, a library installation in Bos-ton’s Chinatown, and a community center in Capetown, South Africa. SoCA also supports design education for Boston-area youth through the Design Initiative for Youth program for 8th-graders and summer Project Link program for high school students.

The work of SoCA is part of the larger project that Quilian Riano has termed ‘critical activism’: a new wave of design-ers that--while conscious of both modernism’s failed utopian origins and post-war idealism--continue the search for alter-native models to architectural practice. Today, students and young designers believe once again that “design can change the world,” contending that participatory design is a tool for shaping not only form, but also interrelated political, social and economic systems and processes. By sharing recent projects by SoCA and other GSD students that leverage design toward social equity, Dk Osseo-Asare and Quilian Riano will offer through ‘Dispatch from GSD’ a primer on how to be a so-cial revolutionary without burning down your design school.

multi-scalar solutions from collaboration

pre-fabricated tent is strong enough to resist hurricane but has a light structure

beer crate and canvas foundation for the tent is used

layer of sand and gravel for initial foundation

tent is converted to a roof structure. The canvas or tarp can be fully enclosed

walls, windows and a door can be built when more resources are collected

roof structure is anchored securely to the foundation to prevent lift

concrete is poured over the layer of sand and gravel

Proper roof, possibly out of corrugated metal can replace the tent when needed

PHASE 2

PHASE 3

Meanwhile, the parcels adjacent are layered with concrete float-ing foundation

When foundation has been laid, the tents can move in . More permanent settle-ments can occur.

The construction of the JIRR is a negotiation of topography, political boundaries and economy. It divides the communities and legal-political boundaries.

The tollway not only separates the physical urban fabric of city, it is also dilineates the sub-district boundaries of the city. The sub-districts (kecamatan) are adjacent to the tollway which meant that the negotiation of the space under-neath the tollway will either have to be a contes-tation amongst both sides or something larger - the city itself.JORR
