SOCIETY MARBELLA and summer go together like Jose Mourinho and Chelsea, so you can imagine how much we are looking forward to Marbella’s silly season.

July and August means that it’s time for some brilliant live music. This year Michael Bolton will be visiting Marbella and, prior to his concert at the city’s famous Puente Romano on August the 1st, we feature an exclusive interview with the Soul Provider himself. Whether you only know some of his singles or are a dyed-in-the-wool fan, you are certain to learn something new about this talented singer, via his recent chat with our very own Nicola McGeorge.

On a similarly musical note we are also looking forward to the arrival of international R&B star, Ne-Yo. Next month he will play superclub, Aqwa Mist, a gig sponsored by the La Sala group, which is also co-promoting Michael Bolton’s concert.

This is also the time of year that the celebs arrive in Marbella – and who would have thought that we would be playing host to the mercurial Guns N’ Roses frontman, Axl Rose?

It’s the social season from now until the autumn, so you can look forward to seeing some of the Coast’s best shindigs recorded in our bumper Who’s In and Who’s Out section. Go on, get out there and party – you know you want to!

Deborah Mitchell, beauty expert of choice to royalty and A-list celebrities, has built up her business empire from very modest beginnings and is now one of the biggest names on the scene. She spoke to Society Marbella about her famous clientele and offered some tips which should interest our female readership.

On a slightly more macho note, our resident motor expert, Ian Kuah, test drives the latest Jaguar F-Type. And, as part of their epic journey from Gibraltar to London, our favourite hooligan petrolheads, the Top Gear team, were spotted test driving an Audi R8 V10 Spyder, McLaren MP4-12C Spider and a Ferrari 458 Spider around Banús. Are we jealous? No, not at all...well, maybe a little bit.

Have a great July, folks!

Until next time...Andy Clark

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

This month SOCIETY MARBELLA talks exclusively to Michael Bolton

18

Is it true that you actually started off in a Rock band?Yes, complete with long hair, leather pants and no shirt. My first few albums were actually released when I was with my rock band, Black Jack. I’d made unsuccessful records as the lead singer in the band Joy, as solo act Michael Bolotin, and as a member of Blackjack. My teens and most of my twenties were spent in determined pursuit of a career as a rock n’ roll musician and singer. As a single guy I was all about the music and not the money. I was focused and driven, and adamant that I would sing the way I wanted to sing and play the way I wanted to play. I didn’t think you could be a true artist and live and work any other way.

What inspires you?My inspiration comes from different sources, in different ways. At home, the love I have for my girls and family and the heartbreaks that all families experience speaks to me. I live on a lake, and the view is breathtaking. Sitting on my own patio, enjoying my home on the rare occasions I AM home creates the perfect backdrop for writing. Inspiration can be found anywhere. For me, it includes the joy of creating music, to treasured moments with loved ones, to giving back to others. Finally, people who have persevered to pursue and achieve their dreams inspire me. Although there are many others, some included later in this interview, some other authors and individuals who have inspired me are Mahatma Gandhi, Socrates, J.C. Michel Montaigne, Alexander Pope, John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Toni Morrison and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Ain’t No Mountain High Enough...

The legendary singer, songwriter and humanitarian, Michael Bolton, has sold over 53 million albums worldwide, received more than 100 million views on YouTube and has 7 Number One singles under his belt, cementing his reputation as one of the most successful musicians of our time,

In this moving, exclusive interview, the Grammy-award winner talks to Nicola McGeorge about working with Lady Gaga, performing with Ray Charles, his life-changing experience with Luciano Pavarotti and his fight against human trafficking, domestic violence and poverty.

You have met many celebrities over the course of your career. Who were the most interesting? Have you ever been star-struck?There are so many… among my favourites are Luciano Pavarotti, Ray Charles, BB King, Aretha Franklin and most recently, Smokey Robinson, Valerie Simpson and Martha Reeves. My friendships with Joe Di Maggio, Bill Clinton, Coretta Scott King and so many others are among the highlights my career has afforded me. I have to say, appearing with The Lonely Island Boys was an experience I will never forget. As far as being “star struck” – absolutely! In addition to the above mentioned: Princess Diana, Bob Dylan, Jose Carreras, Montserrat Caballe, Placido Domingo and Nelson Mandela, are a few who come to mind...

You met your hero Ray Charles, what was that like? The student finally meets the master (in most of my interviews, I’ve expressed that Ray was, and continues to be, my single, biggest, vocal influence). We hit it off immediately and performed together on a few memorable occasions. Several years after meeting the master, I was invited to induct Ray Charles into the Jazz Hall of Fame. You can imagine how thrilled I was when asked to perform ‘Georgia’ with Ray for the 1991 television special 50 Years of Music Making: A Tribute to Ray Charles. I nearly lost it while standing onstage with him at the piano for that performance. He was such a powerful influence and teacher for me and for countless other performers, especially with his masterful back phrasing.

Inspiration can be found anywhere. For me, it includes the joy of creating music, to treasured moments with loved ones, to giving back to others.

Tell us the story behind the stunning ‘How Am I Supposed to Live Without You.’ Well, the power of the song comes from the fact that was written from a true place and at some point in everyone’s life they are going to experience something similar. Even if it doesn’t apply to their primary relationship, we all have to cope with our losses in life and that’s what makes us human beings. So the common denominator in the song between my audience and me is the emotional resonance. This song was a hit twice: first for Laura Branigan in ‘83 and then for me on the album Soul Provider in ‘89; still, to this day, I point the mic out into the audience in Thailand, Argentina, China, South Africa, Iceland, Poland, Italy and they sing me the words and I mean ALL of the words, verses and choruses. ‘How Am I…’ is one they still embrace because everyone’s been there on one side or another of the song if they’ve lived at all. Something in the song resonates melodically and thematically in such a way that it just gets under your skin and stays there. We have fun with it live, because we encourage people to sing it to me in the audience and then we all join in. It’s still such a powerful, moving experience when I think back to the beginning when, as a pre-teen, I had just one dream: to make music and sing.

In ‘83, Laura chose to record ‘How Am I Supposed to Live Without You’, which was released as her second single. Her version climbed to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary list and spent 22 weeks in the charts. Laura’s recording of ‘How Am I…’ was playing on radio stations everywhere. The fact that a song I’d co-written was soaring up the charts lifted my spirits because, at the same time, my own single ‘Fool’s Game’ was losing steam. Laura sang, ‘How Am I…’ as a pop ballad, very much

as I’d performed it on the demo. I’d written quite a few love songs already, along with a ton of rock songs, so I was comfortable with them, even though I hadn’t recorded any myself. I am most proud that the genius producer, David Foster, once wrote that ‘How Am I…’ was one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and that this song brought me, as a singer, to the attention of the label and the public.

You became an Internet phenomenon after your Jack Sparrow video. How did that feel?A former agent introduced me to these crazy guys. They wanted to do something with me, but the first few scripts they sent were pretty raunchy and I just did not think I was ready to shock my audience to that degree. They kept re-writing and collaborating with me until the infamous Jack Sparrow skit fit and ultimately worked. It was hard to get though the video and music ‘cause these guys are so freakin’ funny. We misbehaved, but I would love to work with them again and we are planning to do so. The characters I played appealed to me so much because most people do not get to see the funny and playful side of me. I am a hopeless joker. I was in the studio working on my last album and we’re all in Pro Tools so there are computer screens everywhere and three or four guys were glued to a screen and they were definitely not working on the music. They said, “You gotta see this!” and it was The Lonely Island boys in ‘Dick in the Box’. It was hysterical and of course the guys in the studio went looking for others and, in short order,

we found Natalie Portman, which is another sick and shocking Lonely Island guys brand piece of comedy. Very, very funny stuff! If you had only seen the lyrics Andy was pitching to me earlier you’d know what a relief this version was! Andy has no reservations when it comes to an all-new low level in the dialogue. Some of it was immediately laugh out loud freakin’ funny, too, but I couldn’t go there. This one is definitely an out of character quote for me at the end of the song but it’s perfectly in character for Pacino’s masterpiece portrayal of Tony in Scarface, which of course is one of my favourite films and the most interesting character that Al has brought to life. I wish they had let me do more speaking in this one; maybe next time. And, yes, it’s a relief to have fun in the skin of different characters and to just have a moment where you can say f*** it, let’s have some fun with this.

Was it fun to dress in drag?I must say, though, that the Erin Brockovich character was a little

shocking for me, because I looked just like my mother - only she is prettier, way prettier!

What was it like working with Lady Gaga?I received a call from my record company representative who told me that they had a young artist who was a great songwriter and would soon release an album. Her name was Lady Gaga. Since I hadn’t heard of her, I asked them to send me some MP3s of her music. One of the first I listened to was ‘Just Dance’. The first verse and chorus convinced me that this girl was headed for big things. After meeting her, I knew she would be huge. Fortunately she’d grown up with my music and loved it. It was a pleasure to write with her and even better to hear her sing her ass off, working on variations and different parts of the song we created and I loved what I heard so I said, “let’s write” and that night we met at a studio in West Lake studios in L.A. We hit it off immediately and wrote from eight at night till 6:30 the next morning the first time. I was very impressed with her ability to sing right in front of me and with the control of her voice, her lyrical ideas and her extremely high levels of energy. We worked the next night from eight till about four in the morning and finished the song in London. I wasn’t surprised when her album came out and was wildly successful and I wasn’t shocked when she became the hottest artist in the world so quickly. Gaga is amazing, constantly reinventing herself and executing her next vision. She’s a true artist. In the early days I told her that we needed to slay people with this song. She shot right back with what would become its title: “You murder my heart!”

Tell us about performing with Luciano PavarottiIt was a life-altering occurrence. My knees were shaking the first time we sang at rehearsal together in Modena, Italy. Later, the performance was a major televised event that drove my album to Number One and established me in Italy. The concert also paved the way for my study of opera and the subsequent recording of my arias album, My Secret Passion. I have included arias from this CD in every show, anywhere that I perform in the

world. Luciano and I repeated our duet on the David Letterman Show

in the U.S. Luciano’s zest for life was contagious - he and his

incomparable voice literally changed mine. Singing

with Luciano in Modena inspired me to the point I studied Italian, trained my voice, recorded an aria CD that remained on the classical chart for weeks, shot a TV special in an opera house is Catania, a Christmas Special with Placido Domingo and performed again with Jose Carreras - and still perform an aria or two in

my shows to this day. Still, when performing with any

or all of these great tenors, it is an amazing and humbling

experience. I have been blessed in my career, though

and think that everyone is where he or she is supposed to be.

What makes you laugh?I am a shameless jokester. For so many years, many people did not see this side of me, but it is definitely a major part of who I am and I have so much fun revealing that to my fans. A huge perk is that I have a whole new set of fans as a result of the comedic side. I love great comics from Joan Rivers to my good friend Rodney Dangerfield and many others. My brother, Orrin is hysterical. My two grand-daughters are very funny and of course, most of my friends are close to crazy and we laugh a lot together.

What or who is the most precious thing in your life? That’s an easy one - my daughters and precious grand daughters. I have a grandson on the way, and I am sure he will steal my heart as well, but for now my girls are my life.

What is the silliest thing you’ve ever read about yourself? There have been so many, but probably that I required blue M&M’s before I would go on stage

Do you have any pre-stage rituals?Yes. Approximately 15 minutes before I take the stage I empty out my dressing room and do vocal warm ups. Then, a pre-show huddle with my band and crew to wish us luck and a kick-butt show

What can we expect from your concert at the Puente Romano in Marbella? Our show consists of an entire journey through not only the hits everyone knows from my career but the songs and music that inspired me as a developing artist. We have the opportunity of a lifetime to perform R&B, pop, classical, blues and rock and roll in the course of an evening, not to mention big band standards We’re blessed with a great audience who tend to appreciate the range of music influenced by artists that I loved in my younger days, from Ray Charles and Otis Redding to Luciano Pavarotti as well as Bob Dylan and BB King. I have a few new players in my band and an absolutely amazing singer who will be performing quite a few duets with me. I will also be featuring a few selections from my latest album that has been released in the States, which is spurred by my childhood love of “Hitsville USA”, in other words, Motown. We have added a few songs from the new CD, which consists of songs that were not only loved in the U.S.A, but also around the world. Motown is feel good music that is in the DNA of everyone who loves music: songs like ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ and other classics. I have a few surprises for the audience as well, but in general, you can expect lots of great music, an amazing band and a lot of fun because my Spanish fans are among the most energetic in the world. Their enthusiastic participation always feeds my band and me and we end up just about setting the stage on fire.

What do you love about Spain?Everything. The generous people, the beautiful geography and antiquity, the food, the gorgeous women and, of course, the nightlife; I just need to get accustomed to the hours - shutting down during the day and one a.m start times in clubs!

The Sala Group, the promoters of your concert are also working with Ne-Yo this summer. Did you enjoy working with Ne-Yo?Ne-Yo is a gentleman and one of the most talented artists around today. We had a lot of fun.

What are you listening to now on your iPod?My IPod ranges from John Mayer to Otis Redding. from Billie Holiday to Lady Gaga, Sade to Eric Clapton with Cream or Clapton paying tribute to Robert Johnson. We all have our early influences. I have Bob Dylan tracks and Nickleback albums on my iPod and in my car.

Which new artists have impressed you? There are so many artists I listen to and enjoy. My playlists are diverse and include all types of music and a wide range of singers. I recently collaborated with artists from all over the world on my previous CD, One World, One Love but there are so many amazing artists with whom I would love to work, we probably don’t have room here to list them all.

Your charity work is very important to you, why is campaigning on behalf of women and children at risk so close to your heart?Early on in my career, I dedicated a portion of my record sales to help children in difficult circumstances, so my sense of responsibility to give back to others came early on in my career. With my success came many requests from other artists and organisations to perform at benefits or help in some way. Much more was needed so, in 1992, I formed the Michael Bolton Foundation - now the Michael Bolton Charities - to help children and

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

women at risk, especially those affected by poverty and domestic violence. I got more deeply involved with this issue because I have three daughters and now two beautiful grand-daughters. I feel outraged by the scourge of violence committed against women in America, as well as globally and so, of all the access that my career has afforded me, this is probably the most important. The Michael Bolton Charities is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and we plan to continue expanding for many years to come. We will renew our efforts in the area of domestic violence, as well as sex trafficking and other human and civil rights. Women are experiencing violence and abuse everywhere in the world and now we are seeing a most disturbing rise in human trafficking, which is modern day slavery. Though primarily the work we do is in the United States we are expanding the reach of the organization and our mission to Europe and Asia. I believe all leaders in politics, in business and influential community leaders need to come together to find the means to put an end to this unacceptable problem.

Kim Kardashian and Kayne West

welcomed their eagerly awaited baby into the world last month…the

baby girl, who is said to look exactly like Kim,

came a month early after Kim started having

contractions. Originally due on the 12 July, Kim had

planned a caesarean but proved she wasn’t too posh to push when the baby was

born naturally on the 16 June. Weighing 5 pounds,

the baby’s name has caused much speculation.

Although no official announcement had been

made when SOCIETY MARBELLA went to press,

certain members of the media in the US were able

to obtain a copy of the birth certificate and the

baby’s name was revealed to be North, sparking

surprise and ridicule from Kimye (Kim and Kanye)

fans. The baby does not have a middle name so it is believed she will be

known as North West, with the family calling her Nori

for short.

Talking of babies, the Duchess of Cambridge is due to give birth this month and although the Kardashian baby was highly anticipated, the hype surrounding the Royal baby will be ridiculous. Although the Royal couple have yet to announce the sex of their first baby, it’s widely believed that it will be a baby girl as Kate hinted when speaking to well-wishers that she was accepting gifts for her ‘d’ before suddenly changing it to baby, sparking the belief that the baby will be a girl.

After revealing details about her double mastectomy a couple of months ago, Angelina Jolie now wants genetic testing for the cancer gene more ac-cessible according to long-time partner Brad Pitt. Pitt disclosed to Good Morn-ing America that Jolie was feeling positive and back to normal after the procedure but wanted more women to have access to the testing to enable them to choose their own fate as she had done. The A list actor was also on the show to speak about his latest movie World War Z, which he said he made for his two sons, Mad-dox and Pax, who thought it was really cool to have a dad playing a zombie.

After two years of trying, it seems Cheryl Cole has finally given up her dream of cracking the US and dropped the creative management team who were helping her – namely Will I Am and his partner Seth Friedman. Although she no longer needs his help breaking the American market, Cheryl and Will remain friends and will no doubt be collaborating again in the future.

It seems the Jackson family will never really be able to move on from Michael’s death. Last month, his daughter Paris was so devastated to learn that she wasn’t full siblings with her brother Prince (all of Jackson’s children were conceived with a sperm donor), that she tried to commit suicide. Thankfully the 15 year old wasn’t successful and was soon said to be recovering at the hospital. Paris was told of the news to prepare her for the on-going court case in which the Jackson family are suing AEG, the concert firm, for $26 million as they believe the firm is to blame for the pop star’s death. The court case has already taken many bizarre turns including evidence ac-cepted by the judge from Jackson’s ghost! The CEO of AEG, Randy Phillips submitted evidence that his friend Brenda Ritchie (ex-wife of crooner Lionel) had a supernatural encounter with Michael who claimed that his death was an accident. It really is a wonder the jury members could keep a straight face when the evidence was entered in court!

Society Marbella bringsyou all the gossip and glamour straight from Hollywood

Dannii Minogue has spoken recently about her long ago affair with Simon Cowell and has admitted that the relation-ship left her hurt and upset. Although the former pop star went on to star as a judge alongside the media mogul in The X Factor, she revealed that it was Simon’s issues that broke their affair and the whole thing left her feeling confused. The former judge also spoke about former rival Sharon Osborne rejoining the judging team at The X Factor - saying that although she wished Sharon well, if she bumped into her, she’d turn around and walk the other way.

Society Marbella brings you the best of this month’s action, horror, romance and comedy.

Cast: Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi

The ConjuringThis upcoming super-natural thriller is sure to be a hit with fans of everything para-normal as it centres on a family who are experiencing disturb-ing events at their farmhouse in Rhode Island. Cast: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor, Ron Livingston, Mackenzie Foy

Grown Ups 2The follow up to the 2010 com-edy Grown Ups, sees comedic heavyweights including Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, and David Spade reunite for more mayhem and hilarious antics. The German supermodel, Claudia Schiffer and her director husband booked into a private villa in the Marbella Club with their three children. She was spotted dining in the OId Town, the MC Cafe and the Marbella Grill. Claudia and Matthew were also snapped watching their brood playing tennis at the Puente Romano.

Guns N’ Roses star, Axl Rose enjoyed his stay in Marbella so much that he prolonged his vacation by an extra week. The singer even surprised guests of the 5-star hotel at which he was residing with an impromptu performance of Knocking on Heaven’s Door. Jealous much!

Jermaine Jackson has been seen partying in two of Marbella’s most exclusive venues. The Jackson 5 member started his night in Newscafe, before moving on to superclub Aqwa Mist. He also made a guest appearance at the SOS Animal gala at Villa Padierna Palace Hotel.

Top Gear hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May were filming part of their latest series in Puerto Banús. The trio were test driving an Audi R8 V10 Spyder, McLaren MP4-12C Spider and a Ferrari 458 Spider. Locals will be familiar with the sight of tourists photographing the supercars in the port, so it was great to see Hammond and May keeping up with tradition and snapping away on their mobile phones.

The former X Factor judge, Tulisa, was seen partying at Ocean Club. However, wearing a pair of giant Christian Louboutin stilettos, a bikini with the slogan ‘Don’t mess with my style’ and sporting a tacky Lucky You tattoo on her groin, is a far cry from the glamour puss she was six months ago.

This past month has seen a touch of glamour returning to Marbella, with a host of A-Listers deciding to pay us a visit; though if a certain pop star isn’t careful she will soon be heading into the Z List category.

Untangle MeIf, like me, your hair has more knots in it than a Boy Scouts’ training camp, then you will love the Denman D6, a wet-to-dry detangling brush that’s now available in a rainbow of shades. It’s not just ideal for teasing out tangles, but great at invigorating the scalp every time you wash your hair. The candy bright colours are hot additions to the bright neon shades of Spring/Summer 2013. All in all it’s the must-have secret detangling weapon for every girl’s (or boy’s) bathroom. denmanbrush.com

You Old SpongerKonjac Sponges have really got me excited – well, it doesn’t take much, does it? If you haven’t already heard of them, today is your lucky day. Your cleans-ing routine will never be the same. Konjac is extracted from a potato-like plant in Asia and has been used by the Japanese for over a century, to deep clean and nurture their delicate skin. Naturally alkaline and loaded with an alphabet of vitamins and minerals, these gentle sponges exfoliate, soften and stimulate blood flow, whilst maintaining skin’s pH balance and eliminating all traces of surface grime. What’s more, they’re sustainably pro-duced, so they’re good both for your complexion and the planet. konjacspongecompany.com

I am loving the Infrared Dryer, which combines the benefits of infrared light, anti static and Ionic technology to deliver speed, shine and a frizz-free finish. Douglas explains, “We’re all short on time, but it’s impor-tant that this doesn’t make the hair condition vulnerable to harsh drying processes in the daily race to get out the door. I wanted a dryer that combined that reduction in drying time with a unique combination of protective technology for a healthy, sleek finish.” Need I say more?erroldouglas.com

Not To Be Sniffed AtThis is a superb scent from Serge Lutens. The opulent coppery gold of the Ambre Sultan liquid doesn’t prepare you for the jagged herbs of the open-ing. My first impression upon sampling was a very herbal, medicinal vibe which immediately hit me upon application. I have to admit I was afraid the spice might be a tad too much, However, it gradually settled into a very warm and aromatic herbal dry down. The scent has a very pleasant and tolerable sweetness without becoming cloying or headache inducing. If you appreciate Serge Lutens I think this is one of his best.sergelutens.com

THE QUEEN BEETherapist-to-the-stars Deborah Mitchell is known for using only natural, organic ingredients in her Heaven Skincare range and has earned a worldwide reputation for excellence, attracting many celebrity fans includ-ing members of the Royal Family. In this exclusive interview, she talks to Nicola McGeorge about Victo-ria Beckham’s fight against acne, Camilla Duchess of Cornwall’s botox alternative and how Kate Middleton achieved that wedding day glow.

THE BEAUTY BAROMETER

What is so special about the Bee Sting facial? Its dramatic results shock people. For-merly facials were either relaxing or they achieved a gradual improvement. After one bee sting facial clients see a radical change in their face shape and complex-ion, yet it’s still a relaxing treatment.

How much did the Duchess of Cornwall becoming a client change your life? She is a wonderful client and her transfor-mation using Heaven Skincare and having regular treatments has had a positive ef-fect on the image of mature women. She is a style guru for natural beauty, proving surgery or Botox is not the answer.

How did you feel after hearing that Kate Middleton had been given Heaven Skin care to use before her wedding day?I think the Duchess of Cambridge is beauti-ful and knowing she had been given Heaven Bee Venom and other products was a real joy for me. I feel very privileged to be in the position I’m in, treating mem-bers of the Royal family.

Why did you get involved with the beauty industry?I had acne and I thought if I learned about skincare I could treat the condition, as great skin was vital for my modelling career. As soon as I started treating people I had the strangest feeling I was home. That feeling has never left me; it’s just continued to grow.

What has been the key to your success?Firstly, I never really see myself as that successful, although I do have to give myself a little pinch when I think about my 230 Heaven spas worldwide. I never feel as though I’m working and I love helping people and solving their skincare problems. When I developed a cure for my acne it was an amazing feeling, because I knew how low I felt with spots. The phone call from Victoria Beckham to thank me for my Age Defiance cream was one of the high points of my career

Victoria Beckham has been very open about her troubled skin due to PCOS, which of your products does she use?Age Defiance and Bee Venom

Why did you take the holistic route? Spiritualism, believing in good thoughts and healing is just who I am, it runs in my family. Choosing organic ingredients was again the only way truly to help the skin. Heaven is a results driven range, every product works straight away.

How has the beauty industry changed over the years? The frozen, puffy face is out of fashion now

because so many comedians are ridiculing it. The natural alternatives which do work such as the Heaven Bee Venom and a few other good ingredients are changing the world of beauty.

Why did you decide to make your own product range? Because I’m allergic to parabens and chemicals in products, so this pushed me to make my own range. Now Heaven Skincare is one of the world’s most sought after ranges and there are still no real alternatives to chemical free products that achieve visible results.

Describe your product line.An organic results driven brand. No com-promise to perfect skin.

Which are your bestsellers? Our best sellers are the quick action keys to perfect skin: SOS oil for allergies and tis-sue repair, Age Defiance for plumping out lines and treating acne and psoriasis, Bee Venom mask for a natural Botox alterna-tive, Bee Venom Eyes for puffiness and fine lines and Divine cream with orange oils for sun damage and pigmentation.

What inspired you to create the Bee Venom Mask ?I caught sight of my reflection in the mirror and thought I looked old. Not wanting to use botulism poison (better known as Botox) I began working on an alternative natural bee tox. Clients were immediately astounded by the transformation of their skin. I, too, was pleased with the results.

Text by Nicola McGeorgePhotos by Ruth Jones

For the past six months I have not been able to part take in much exercise due to poor health. The problem was that the less physi-cal activity I did, the worse I felt.

Not exercising not only piles on the pounds - though I have been eating healthily to avoid this – but it also puts you at greater risk of suffering from a stroke, heart disease and cancer. Inactive people will also feel less en-ergetic, less motivated and might also suffer from disrupted sleep patterns. Exercising not only lowers stress levels but also has a proven effect on our mental state, so much so that doctors now prescribe exercise for milder cases of depression.

I finally decided I needed some expert advice from someone who specialised in rehabilitation after long periods of illness, in-activity or major surgery. It was time to bring in a personal trainer.

I have never experienced a personal train-ing session before, so I couldn’t help pictur-ing some Arnold Schwarzenegger wan-nabe barking orders at me and ending up in so much pain I wouldn’t be able to walk for days. Fortunately Paul Isaacs is the total opposite! When he was based in the UK, local doctors would send him any patients in need of rehabilitation, weight loss or those in general need of improving their fitness. He really knows his stuff.

As I love being outdoors, especially on the beach, Paul suggested we have our first session there. The great thing about Paul’s services is that he brings all the equipment to you, so if you are not comfortable in the gym or prefer the privacy of your own home, he can adapt the training to your needs.

“Many people still have this image from the eighties of having to spend hours pump-ing heavy weights in the gym,” Paul grins. “Those days are gone. I use strength and conditioning techniques that you can prac-tise on your own without bulky and expen-sive equipment.”

Paul began the session by asking me to fill out in-depth forms about everything from my goals to my food habits to help him get an insight into who I am. He really likes to un-derstand his clients before devising a target-based exercise and nutrition programme.“I am not going to make your life hell,” he promises. “If I take away everything you love, you will never stick to it. If you enjoy a drink and eating out, then you can still do this, but in moderation. I am not here to judge, I am here to help. But, we do need to be realistic, especially with rehabilitation. It will take time. I am not Paul Daniels, if you expect to get fit or drop four dress sizes in a week, it’s not going to happen.”

Paul explains to me that when he takes on a new client he sees it as a journey for two people. He believes it’s an honour to be invited into his clients’ homes, seeing them when their guards are down. Yes, ladies - that means seeing us without makeup first thing in the morning. I love the fact that he is on call 24/7. If you are going through a bad patch, or feel the cookie jar is calling, you can give him a call and ask his advice. He has even been known to take his clients food shopping. Now that is dedication.

“I have seen everything, from an immensely obese 18 year-old to an anorexic old lady and it’s not all about losing weight either. I have an 85 year-old client with Parkinson’s who just wanted more independence, to be able to get out of bed, dress himself and move around.”

Now for the actual exercise part; after watching me perform a sequence of stretches to assess my coordination, posture and stability, Paul moves me onto a series of squats, lunges, sit-ups and press-ups, mixed with short bursts of cardio. As we move onto weights he chuckles: “This is for the underarms. There will be no bingo wings on my watch.”

We finish off with boxing. Paul asked me to imagine I was hitting someone who had re-ally annoyed me. Well, that was it. I was off and confess that I REALLY enjoyed it!

After a few stretches, I waited to hear Paul’s verdict and was totally surprised by his com-ments. Apparently I am much fitter than I think I am and I have just got myself stuck in a routine. I also have amazing flexibility. Yes, I am grinning like a Cheshire cat writing this. He recommended high-intensity interval training, an effective alternative to tradi-tional endurance-based training, which I have done for the past 10 years. When it came down to my nutrition Paul actually believes that I am being too strict on myself and advised allowing myself two ‘fat days’ as I call them. I LOVE HIM.

For the next few days I did ache, which was expected, as I had used muscles that I didn’t even know existed. I was astounded that, after only one session, my posture had noticeably improved. I do not put my name to many things and am very careful about what or who I endorse, but I cannot recommend Paul highly enough for any-one looking to improve their life. Whether you want to get back into your favourite jeans, improve your fitness, need rehabili-tation or even want to reduce your stress levels, I know it’s a bold statement, but he really can change your life.

NOW THERE’S SOMETHINGTO SMILE ABOUT

THE ONE TO WATCH

Marbella’s Cosmetic Dental Clinic is now offering a totally new concept: short term orthodontic treatment with white braces, otherwise known as the six month smile.

Are you one of the millions of adults, 15 years and older, who are unhappy, self-conscious or even embarrassed about their smile? Many adults spend their entire lives covering their mouth when they laugh, smile or talk because they imagine that metal braces are their only option.

However there is an effective, safe and affordable cosmetic solution sure to suit your lifestyle. The new technique employs the latest dental technology to correct your teeth quickly with clear – and there-fore, unobtrusive - adult braces. The key components of the treatment are the continuous, gentle force that is employed and the primary focus of repositioning the most visible teeth.

The newly opened Costa Cosmetica Beauty Salon in San Pedro has em-braced an international retail perspec-tive by designing a unique space with the emphasis firmly on client satisfaction. The dedicated team has been hand-picked to make customers feel a million dollars and offers an old school customer service, ensuring every visit is one to remember.

THE CONCEPT“When we set about opening our first sa-lon our philosophy was simple - to create an inviting space with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where clients feel at home,” the owners reveal. “Our background is in the health and beauty sector with over 30 years experience in retailing male and female fragrances worldwide. Leading interior designer, Andrea Böck founded Ambience Home Design S.L. in 2002. Since

Ambience opened its doors on the Coast, she has worked on an extensive number of residential and commercial projects with the focus on luxury villas and apartments, show-flats and boutique hotels.

“Our main objective is to grasp and fully understand each of our clients’ visions for their homes,” says Andrea. “From a simple renovation to a complete makeover of a property, every detail is carefully looked at in order to achieve not only a unique design scheme, but also to incorporate a functional layout that makes a beautifully decorated home easy to live in.”

For Andrea a great way of finding inspiration comes from travelling to various exotic places, learning

about new cultures, and enjoying the different colours, textures and natural beauty that make up individual lifestyles.

“We are in constant contact with new suppliers and we visit fairs throughout Europe, Asia and Africa to find unique pieces that we can use in our projects. Because of this, we stock a wide range and diversity of products and luxury designer names that enjoy working with our design studio.”

They are constantly looking for new artists and exhibit their artwork in their showroom. They enjoy an exclusive agreement with French artist, Francoise Nielly, amongst others.

Additionally, they design and make customised furniture which enables them to create bespoke pieces that give the desired effect to the décor.

Their design team works in close consultation with each of their clients, envisioning the finished project through elaborate Autocad drawings, 3D renders, and picture/colour scheme presentations.

Andrea is currently working on several projects in Marbella, an elegant contemporary high-end five bedroom villa in Los Monteros, and has just been assigned to be the project manager for the complete refurbishment of a 900m2 luxury villa in Sierra Blanca.

In the meantime, they’ve just dispatched one of their containers to Egypt, for the completion of a shabby chic private villa in El Cairo, and in the near future they will be working on a boutique hotel in Portugal and a private home in Belgium.”

Inflation in most of the developed world is slowing. One reason for this is that much of the monetary

stimulus provided by quantitative eas-ing has not found its way to where it is needed most: the consumer. In the eurozone, austerity measures have also played a large part in accelerating the drop in consumer prices, especially in the periphery, because of a comprehensive shift that such policies have en-gendered in the relation-ship of supply and de-mand, causing the latter to decline considerably. Annual consumer price inflation rates in Spain and Portugal are currently 1.4% and 0.2% respectively (and may even be over-stated after adjustments for tax increases), while unem-ployment rates, now at 26.8% and 17.8%, are likely to worsen and thus exacerbate the defla-tionary trend. In Greece, where un-employment stands at 27%, consumer prices actually entered deflationary territory in March this year.

A similar trend is evident in core euro-zone states, despite the absence of austerity programmes. In the periph-ery, these programmes, although clearly too severe, have been main-tained largely at the insistence of Germany, whose government has per-haps been more mindful of voter senti-ment ahead of September’s domestic elections than of the fallout of auster-ity not only in the region, but also in its own economy. Such intransigence has helped to establish the preconditions for a eurozone deflationary maelstrom into which, one by one, member states could be sucked. And, while eurozone exporters may be relatively immune from local deflationary forces, they

are threatened by the consequences of overseas ones, notably from Japan, where the central bank has engi-neered a massive competitive devalu-ation of the yen. Deflation is rapidly becoming a global phenomenon.

WAKE-UP CALLInvestors have already acknowledged the threat of deflation. This was most recently evident in mid-April’s slump in the gold price, when it suffered its larg-est one-day drop in thirty years. Gold’s

THE DEMON

IN THE SHADOWS that lurks

Supposedly, one of the many prospective side-effects of quantitative easing is inflation. A significant boost to the money sup-ply, so the theory goes, encourages excess demand and drives prices skywards. While this has certainly been true for many financial assets latterly, the opposite may be said for the prices of goods and services – so much so, that inflation insecurity

is now giving way to deflation dread.

Jesper HertzChiefRepresentativeof NordeaBank inSpain

main investment attraction is as an inflation hedge; given the present muted level of inflation, gold is of diminishing interest to investors. While the prices of other com-modities have shown similar, albeit less dramatic, falls, a potentially ominous trend is developing across the sector.

In the political sphere, it is, ironically, Germany who now seems ready to act against the burgeoning deflationary threat in Europe. In a remarkable policy about-face, the German government is backing away from its insistence on austerity measures for fiscally profligate neighbours and has issued calls for more investment initiatives, especially in Southern Europe, in which Germany itself is offering to play a major financial role. While this uncharacteristic turna-round may have something to do with image enhancement (other

European countries account for two thirds of German export sales),

it nevertheless represents belated acceptance that too much auster-

ity has undermined the goal it sought to achieve. After all, as the Japanese already know, one effective weapon against deflation is the creation of (manageable) inflation, which can best be effected by stimulating de-mand. If Europe’s troubled economy is to survive, growth measures are now imperative.

TORQUE TALK

74

75

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on the Jaguar F-Type

75

TORQUE TALK

TORQUE TALK

I found an old Jaguar concept car brochure in a box in my office recently. It said “F-Type” on its cover, and hailed

from the 2000 Detroit Motor Show. Just over 13 years later, I am sitting in the produc-tion Jaguar F-Type. Better late than never I suppose.

Driving al fresco through villages in the Pamplona region of Northern Spain, the F-Type turns heads. This side of a Lamborghi-ni, Jaguar’s new sportscar is as far from the ubiquitous Peugeot and Seat hatchbacks that populate these rural roads as you can imagine.

Jaguar brought along the Le Mans winning C and D-Types, and the legendary E-Type to make the F-Type’s lineage clear. While the long bonnet, short tail concept has been the cornerstone of Jaguar’s design ethos since Sir William Lyons founded the marque in 1935, it is obvious that the E-Type had the most influence on the new car.

Pure Jaguar in its lines, the F-Type is a thing of beauty. It is bang up-to-date, and ex-actly what most enthusiasts would agree a 21st Century Jaguar sports car should look like.

With a 200mm shorter wheelbase than the XK, the 4,470mm long all-aluminium, two-seater F-Type appears compact thanks to its exquisite proportions and standard 19-inch wheels. However, Jaguar say that its footprint is actually six-percent larger than the Porsche 991 Carrera Cabriolet, whose

shorter nose allows a token rear seat/stor-age area to be incorporated in its cabin.

The F-Type’s beautiful lines and short, boat tail rear end impose its only real downside; limited luggage space. I managed to get my carry-on case and camera bag into the boot, and if you are judicious with squashy bags, you can probably pack a weekend’s worth of stuff in there, but that’s it. Don’t even think of ordering the optional space saver tyre!

The entry-level F-Type tips the scales at 1,597kg, 147kg heavier than the base 991 Carrera Cabriolet, and roughly in line with its extra physical size. The comparison is valid as both cars have aluminium struc-tures and body panels.

Even the entry-level F-Type is a potent machine. Its supercharged 2,995cc V6 produces 340hp at 6,500rpm and 450Nm of torque from 3,500 to 5,000rpm, and makes full use of the standard close-ratio eight-speed ZF Quickshift automatic to find the right gear for every occasion. The stopwatch reports a rapid 0-100km/h time of 5.3 sec and 260km/h top speed.

With tweaks to its ECU and the free-flow Active Exhaust, the 1,614kg F-Type S makes 380hp at 6,500rpm, and 460Nm of torque from 3,500 to 5,000rpm. Top speed is 275km/h, with 100km/h coming up in 4.9 sec from rest.

76

77

TORQUE TALK

Soundtrack is a very important part of the sports car experience, and the Jaguar en-gineers put a lot of effort and imagination into this single aspect of the F-Type.

The 40 extra horses and 10Nm of torque corralled by the F-Type S are down to a remapped engine management system, and lower backpressure from its sports ex-haust system. As with the entry-level F-Type, the spent gases exit from the two exquisite stainless steel end pipes that are centrally mounted in homage to the E-Type.

That said, our base F-Type test cars had the optional Active Exhaust valve system that is standard on the S and V8S models. This system offers more decibels under load from 3,000rpm, with a nice pop, pop on the over-run.

Even with its exhaust in quiet mode, the V6 makes enticing ear candy on full throttle. The entrance tunnel to the Navarra Race Circuit proved to be a superb echo cham-ber in which to test this, and a full throttle blatt in second gear quickly proved the base F-Type’s credentials as a top-notch tunnel car!

Listening to the S on track, the top note as the cars howled down the pit straight was strongly reminiscent of the old straight-six XK motor that powered the F-Type’s three ancestors.

The V8 S has an altogether larger voice, underlined by the thunderous bass note that only a bent-crank V8 can generate. With 495hp at 6,500rpm and a muscular

625Nm of torque between 2,500 and 5,500rpm, the V8 S blasts to 100km/h in 4.3 sec and on to 300km/h. Incidentally we were told that all three F-Type variants have electronically limited top speeds, so all will actually go faster than the official numbers.

On the way, its more conventional look-ing quad exhaust pipes deliver a deep roar, overlaid with a rasp from its resona-tor boxes as revs build. While not as deep chested as the AMG V8 or even the XKR-S, its soundtrack has a distinct character of its own.

More than just being significantly faster in a straight line than its V6 powered siblings, the V8 S also feels more planted and stable

on the road. This is not to say that the V6 versions do not, but rather that the extra mass in the nose makes the V8 S feel more grown up in the way it goes down the road.

When you start to push really hard howev-er, the substantial extra power makes the V8S a much harder partner to tango with as you approach the limit. With the safety systems loosened off, its back end can be lit up with surprisingly little effort.

Massive torque coupled to the F-Type’s relatively short wheelbase are the key to that exuberant streak, and you have to be on top of your game if you intend to flirt with its darker side.

Pure Jaguar in its lines, the F-Type is

a thing of beauty... what a 21st Century

Jaguar sports car should look like.

78

TORQUE TALK

Apart from its lusty torque delivery and big horsepower at the top end, the most im-pressive thing about the supercharged 5.0 litre V8 is its willingness to rev like a smaller capacity, short stroke, naturally-aspirated engine.

Despite its larger displacement, which means heavier reciprocating components, and the fact that it has a belt-driven super-charger in tow, this motor feels ‘light’ to the throttle.

The way it whizzes smoothly to the redline in each gear ratio gives the impression that its internals have low mass, and it always feels eager to deliver sparkling response to any demand for power in any gear.

The eight-speed auto used across the board is the perfect partner for both en-gines, delivering shifts that may be fractions

of a second slower than a dual-clutch unit, but feel more than rapid enough on road and track.

The trick is in the software, which never hesitates, delivering fast and smooth up and down shifts. If you are picky, you could say it is not always 100-percent on the ball if left to its own devices, but if you use the paddle shifters, the result is consistently as good as it gets.

The direct feel of the gearbox is also down to the fact that it locks up in each ratio once the torque converter’s first gear work is done. Only the V6 S has a Dynamic Launch Mode function, the massive torque of the V8 S precluding the use of such a device.

Having oodles of torque on tap at low crankshaft speeds is always useful, and you

can drive the 1,665kg V8 S everywhere one gear higher than you think. It takes third gear at 50km/h very well, and will even pull away smoothly from this speed in fourth if you so wish despite a taller final drive than the V6 models.

From 1,500rpm, the thrust is palpable, beyond that it is just plain strong, and builds rapidly with revs. On the fly, you will find you can use one ratio higher than in most normal cars, so tractability is a strong suit.

While early blown Jaguar straight-six engines had a fairly obvious supercharger whine that some owners consider part and parcel of the performance car experi-ence, this supercharger is dead quiet until you hit 5,000rpm. And even then there is only just a hint of its scream in the cabin. In the main, few would guess that the engine had a blower strapped to it, just that it is powerful, responsive and eager to please.

The inherent grunt of the larger capacity helps here, and while the V6 and V8 are brothers in Jaguar’s modular engine family,

7979

TORQUE TALK

the V6 engines’ forced aspirated status is a little more obvious.

The relative bore x stroke of the V6 and V8 motors are a big clue here. The 84.5 x 89.0mm numbers for the V6 make it slightly under-square, while the 5,000cc V8’s bore and stroke of 92.5 x 93.0mm make it practi-cally square, and therefore an inherently fast revving engine.

Although it has much more grunt, the V8 motor is actually in a softer state of tune. Its 9.5:1 compression ratio is low by today’s standards, and one whole point below the 10.5:1 of the V6.

The weather was decidedly iffy on my rotation and it began to shower on the first day’s cross-country route. Driving through a village, I had to use the powered hood’s ability to open or close on the fly up to 50km/h. This takes all of 12 seconds, which is pretty good.

Luckily the rain had abated by the time we reached the track, and as I approached the tunnel at the Circuit, I dropped the roof on the fly to experience the exhaust note up close and personal. Wow!

Driving the more powerful V6S on track was the first chance to see what the F-Type can really do, and it quickly proved itself to be willing and able. The extra power is very apparent, but more so in the mid and top sections of the power band.

The F-Type immediately feels lighter, more agile and more together on track than its bigger XK brother, which handles well but feels all of its size and weight.

It also means that the F-Type does not monster its rubber as fast on track, so its grip on the optional 20-inch wheels, shod with standard street Pirellis, does not go off as quickly.

The big brakes also have to work less hard with the lighter car, and proved very im-pressive in both versions. They convincingly hauled off big speeds both on the road and at the Navarra Circuit, where two of the bends are approached in fifth and sixth gears respectively, before braking.

In high-speed bends, the F-Type is reas-suringly stable. Boasting an impressive 18,000Nm/degree torsional rigidity, its stiff bodyshell, and the well judged suspension attached to it delivers very good body control, while the optional 20-inch tyres on my S test car provided huge levels of mechanical grip.

The result is that you can actually carry more speed into the faster, higher gear bends than you initially think, so you need to experiment, building up to the very high limit.

Many front-engined, rear-drive cars suffer from understeer going into slow bends. Overdrive the F-Type by carrying too much speed in and it will too, but trail braking to settle the nose and get the weight onto the front while turning-in, I found a lovely balance between the front and rear ends. Going in just below the limit gives you the leeway to adjust your line up to the apex, before rolling into the throttle.

The trick is in the software, which never hesitates, delivering fast and smooth up and down shifts.

TORQUE TALK

On the road, I immediately liked the F-Type’s power steering for its nice weighting and perfect connection with the chassis turn-in rate. It does not need a great deal of lock to do hairpin bends, and feels just right.

This was underlined on track, where the steering proved absolutely spot-on through every kind of corner, and I found myself intuitively applying the right amount of lock from the very first bend.

Speaking to the engineers later, I was told that despite the mass exodus to electric power steering systems by many manufac-turers to eke out that last bit of fuel econ-omy and emissions, Jaguar elected to stay with a variable ratio hydraulic system. Considering the number of average and a few bad electric systems out there, I am glad they took that decision.

With the suspension of both V6 and V8 models in Comfort mode, I felt that while the V6 version is comfortable and reassur-ing on its 19-inch wheels, there are times

when you feel just a hint of enough initial vertical resistance in its front end to make it borderline firm in the way it reacts to short, sharp undulations.

Despite the larger 20-inch wheels, required by the larger brakes, the extra engine weight in the nose, and the revised spring and damper settings of the more sophis-ticated Jaguar Active Ride Control make the V8 S subjectively feel more settled and composed. This makes for a more comfort-able drive over distance.

Limited slip differentials are standard on all F-Types, the mechanical unit on the V6 models having a 23/26 percent locking action on acceleration and over-run. The V8 has Jaguar’s electronic differential as fitted to the XKR, but with bespoke control software.

As a driving machine, the V8S is probably a bit too full on for prospective owners who do not have much experience with very powerful rear-wheel-drive cars. In terms of raw character, the best way to describe

it is probably along the lines of a TVR that went to finishing school to have its man-ners honed, and good build quality and reliability added.

That leaves the F-Type S as the pick of the bunch for overall balance. It is fast enough in a straight line, makes a great sound, and feels pretty much fully resolved dynami-cally.

On that basis, the F-Type S is the best drivers’ car Jaguar has ever made, and continues to impress as you dig deeper and deeper into its talents on both road and track. Importantly, it also saves you a significant chunk of change over its V8-powered brother.

However, no matter which of the three F-Type variants you own, at the end of each journey, you will close the door, and look back with a glowing sense of pride that this gorgeous sports car belongs to you. That in itself is priceless.

Last month, internationally renowned artist Alicia Czerniak a resident of Marbella opened her art exhibition at the Art Gallery of F11 Immo Car Gallery in San Pedro de Alcántara.

Approximately 200 visitors came to catch a glimpse at the latest creations of Alicia and were quick to snap up some of the exhibits.

After taking an international tour with her work through many cities, including three museums in Japan, Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima, exhibitions in China,

Beijing, Paris, Austria, Belgium and many other countries, this well-known painter has now returned to Marbella.

Freedom and spirituality literally burst out of her work. The freedom of a vigorous and gestural brushstroke, which is very representative at the same time.

Her work communicates, expressing the idea of an opening towards the cosmic with an energy that transcends the limits of the canvas.

Through a pure, primary and intense chromatic range, Alicia Czerniak introduces us to her pictorial space with an audacity that almost gives us goose bumps. Her containment and the order of her first works culminate in an obvious manner in a predominance of matter and in a flow and dynamism that are free and forthright.

The variation of paintings still can be seen during the whole month of July at F11 Immo Car Gallery in San Pedro de Alcántara.

PEGGOTTYS

FISH ‘N’ CHIPPerfection

L iving on the Costa del Sol, we are almost stupidly spoiled where great fish and seafood

restaurants are concerned. If you want to find out what an experienced chef can achieve with anything from monk-fish to percebes, you can probably eat at a different place every night and only rarely be disappointed with the results.

However, every so often the idea of a good old slap-up fish and chip night raises its head, so when it does, it’s good to know that we can rely on Peggotty’s to deliver the goods, for this family owned and run restaurant does a five-star fish supper like nobody else.

Conveniently situated in the popu-lar Benavista area of Estepona, the ambience is admittedly rather more sophisticated than the average fam-ily chippy, the ultra-modern interior offering a cheeky visual challenge to anyone anticipating a greasy spoon.

The food, too, is in a different class.

We decided to keep things tradi-tional, opting for the Cod, Haddock and Wholetail Scampi, all served with Peggotty’s traditional British thick-cut Chips – these were no anorexic Ameri-can style fries. The cod was superb, light white and fluffy and encased in a gorgeously crunchy batter. We discovered that the haddock was line caught and of an exceptionally high quality and, like the proverbial pud-ding, the proof was in the eating. It

was delicious and, despite the vast size of the portions, we managed to finish everything. The wholetail scampi, too, was a world away from the dismal offcuts that were traditionally served as scampi in pubs throughout the UK in the 1970s, this was the real thing, as the intensely clean flavour proved.

A few words about the accompani-ments; any self-respecting chippy stands or falls on the quality of its Mushy Peas and Tartare Sauce and these were particularly good, the green of the peas and the creamy tex-ture of the sauce providing still more explosions of flavour.

It is necessary here to state that not all the dishes at Peggotty’s are fish related. Some members of our party

decided to opt for something differ-ent, and can especially recommend the excellent Greek Salad with Feta and Black Olives. Carnivores are also catered for and we all sampled the Southern Fried Chicken served with Chips and Coleslaw and the glorious Baby Back Wholerack of Ribs with the now famous Peggotty’s marinade; these were given a quick blast on the chargrill, which gave them a charac-teristic flame-grilled taste.

A word of caution at this point; pace yourselves if you are a big dessert fan, since the main dishes are so tasty – and so vast – that it takes a great deal of willpower not to present the staff with an empty plate.

After taking a much needed break we did finally manage to conquer an American Rock Slide Brownie and also

COSTA CUISINE

chose a Banana Fritter, served with Cream or Vanilla Ice Cream. These were both prepared with the flair that is characteristic of the Peggotty’s team, who succeed magnificently in taking old favourites and giving them a slight twist. It was like experiencing these very traditional desserts from a completely different perspective.

Peggotty’s is no newcomer to the Coast and has been delighting diners for some time now. If they continue providing food of this quality there is no doubt that they will be attracting new customers for many years to come.

COSTA CUISINE

W ith Summer finally upon us and the promise of long lunches making the days

far more irresistible than the nights, it’s very easy to find yourself in the dilem-ma of where to spend these after-noons. Before I set off to write this food review a friend described the venue to me as... “it is unusual that I repeat myself to a level that I am conscious of boring people to death, but the food is so sensational, I feel it is my duty to let people know!” Hmmm, high praise indeed.

Firstly (and I apologise for this if you are reading) but the aforementioned friend is not usually conscious of boring people to death and secondly, with praise that good, how on earth can anyone meet those expectations?

Well, after spending an afternoon relaxing in the stunning surroundings I can happily report that Sala Beach not only meets those expectations, but ex-ceeds them! Rarely have I tasted Thai food as good as this and that includes Thai food in Thailand! There are other surprises too. I have never cared much for wasabi, it could have something to do with the tiny ball of it I mistak-enly ate a few years ago in its entirety (thinking it a pea) leaving my throat, nostrils and mind feeling as though a small nuclear device had been detonated, but somehow the chicken wonton salad with wasabi mayonnaise managed to completely blow me away. No need to worry, it had nothing to do with the strength of the wasabi but the very fact that I didn’t just like

it, I LOVED it. The delicate balance of the wasabi was enhanced by a subtle sweetness that gave me that ecstatic feeling you only get when you taste something new for the first time.

My lunch guest, not being as much alover of Thai cusine as I am opted forthe signature Buddha burger. One ofthe many international options on themenu. He was in raptures at the sightof the burger arriving succulent with juices- enticing you to take a bite in the same way the drop of condensa-tion on a cold glass on a hot day callsyou to quench your thirst.

Other dishes we tried included prawn shots and the fresh tuna steak which, with its mango dressing was a star dish

in its own right. The combination of the fresh seared tuna with its sesame crust andthe acidic sharpnessof the mango left uswanting more. How-ever this is a menu fullof star dishes fightingfor the lead role on a beautiful stage and being a die-hard des-sert fan I was havingthe same fight be-tween my waistline and the dessert menu.

Purely and unselfishly,as I now understoodmy friends wise words of feeling a duty to pass on the informa-tion, my companions and I sampled the warm chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and strawberry cheesecake served with fresh fruits. Thank goodness we were sharing as I could easily have had an uncontrollable urge to eat both and thank goodness we had the foresight to reserve a bed by the pool where, as my afternoon flowed smoothly into early evening I reflected on what a wonderful but fattening summer this was going to be!

PLAZA VILLAGE Suite Morrocan & Lebanese

The Puente Romano has created a culinary experience as unique as the hotel itself. Last month

saw the launch of Plaza Village which brings together four great restaurants, allowing guests to choose the perfect venue to suit every occasion.

Elegant, understated and well thought out, Plaza Village brings a cosmopolitan vibe to Marbella. The shaded plaza is the perfect location

and the biggest sake menu on the coast. In addition to traditional sushi and sashimi, guests can enjoy more unusual dishes and robata grill specialities. Suite is a place where two worlds meet, evoking the enchanting flavours of North African and Arabic cuisine. After dinner, drinks can be served under the stars in the Plaza with music from the resident DJ until early hours. Those wishing to hit the dance floor can party till late in Suite.

On this occasion we decided to dine at Suite. A hidden gem with a flock of in-the-know regulars this open-concept restaurant offers indoor and al fresco dining. Amid Mediterranean and Middle Eastern décor, guests can enjoy exceptional views of the plaza as they dine on Moroccan and Lebanese specialties. Menu options cover an impressive melting pot of Middle Eastern flavors; assorted mezzes, charcoal grilled meats, various fish platters and rich, sweet

pastries provide a sufficiently varied choice for all tastes.

As we are shown to our table, it took me a few seconds to realise I was actually standing in the old Suite nightclub. Recently renovated, the venue now features glass doors that open up to the terrace, providing a stylish setting for smartly dressed waiters to whisk between buzzing tables of equally smartly attired diners

(it’s the sort of place you’ll wish you’d made more of an effort to dress for). The atmosphere is never less than animated, thanks in part to the extensive cocktail list and also the shared plates of hot and cold mezze which circulate freely.

After hearing that the resident mixologist is in a league of his own (think homemade infusions and unusual ingredients) we asked for his recommendations. Boy, were we in

to relax over a glass of chilled wine with tapas or a light Italian lunch. As the sun goes down, this superb venue offers four innovative eateries in the most breathtaking of settings. At La Plaza - Tapas y Vinos you can try some of the most popular and traditional choices of Spanish cuisine, using the very best ingredients. Serafina is a modern Italian restaurant created by Marco & Carlo Morelli, serving in the historical location of the famous Roman Bridge. Namazake offers various Japanese delights

for a treat. The cocktails really are spectacular – they’re some of the finest concoctions on the coast. There was plenty of play with unorthodox ingredients and flavours, creating cutting edge delights. The Raspberry and Passion Fruit Martini was very Carrie Bradshaw while the Chili and Coconut Mai Tai with a dash of lime transported me straight to Hawaii, where I sat swinging in a hammock on the beach . Yes this drink really is that good.

With perfect timing our first course was served as the Roman Bridge was lit by twinkling fairy lights. Starters of crispy Falafel Served with a fiery Yoghurt Dip made for a great introduction. This was followed by the renowned mezze platter. Silky-smooth hummus was given a kick by a perfect balance of added chilli and spices. It made a good match for lemony Tabouleh and a homely Baba Ghanoush.

For the main course we enjoyed a lip-smackingly good Slow Roasted Shoulder of Baby Lamb, fragrant with cinnamon and cumin and falling off the bone. We then moved onto succulent pieces of Marinated Baby Chicken accompanied by delicate Crepes and a sweet, tangy Orange Sauce.

Desserts were the best we’ve ever come across in a Middle Eastern restaurant, particularly the Haleeb. Rice pudding is a universal dessert, found in many cultures, in different forms, and under different names. However what makes the Lebanese version such a delight is the addition of orange blossom. Sweet, warm, floral with the subtle texture of crushed pistachios… to me, this beautiful rice pudding is my anytime ticket to the Middle East. The whole experience was divine and the staff managed the eating and entertainment scenario with politeness and aplomb. If you like cocktails and a resident DJ with your kafta, this is the place to go.

LENNON ROCKS THE ROCK

Latest news on the coast

SOCIETY PINBOARD

Awesome Premier Events Brings Lennon Exhibition to Gibraltar.

Through a personal narration of life with John and The Beatles by his elder son, Julian and Julian’s mother, Cynthia, visitors witness can witness the full gamut of Lennon family life.

This unique 3,000 ft2 exhibition is illustrated with family photos, personal postcards and the Lennons’ collection of memorabilia, seen outside Liverpool for the first time.

The collection on display includes handwritten lyrics of Paul McCartney’s Hey Jude, which he composed especially for Julian, John Lennon’s Honda ‘monkey bike’ motorbike which he rode with Julian, Julian’s first electric guitar with a plaque

which reads “To Julian from Daddy, Christmas 1973”; and John Lennon’s classic afghan coat.

“John Lennon is an idol to millions of people who grew up loving his music and ideals, but to me he is the father I loved and lost. I hope this exhibition lets people see another aspect of his life and our time together as a family. This collection represents something of great importance to us as it is part of our history” - Julian Lennon

NORDEA OPENS PRIVATE BANKING BRANCH IN SINGAPORETo serve the growing community of Nordic individuals in Asia, Nordea has opened a private banking branch in Singapore. Nordic businesses are growing in Asia and are thereby attracting more Nordic professionals to live and work in the region. The Nordic expatriates in Asia are also staying longer than they used to. Singapore is the centre for private banking in Asia, and Nordea offers private banking services to the growing community of wealthy individuals from its newly opened branch in Singapore. “Asia-Pacific is an engine of growth for the world”, says CEO Jhon Mortensen of Nordea Bank S.A. “To present the growing number of Nordic individuals in the region with the same high quality private banking service as we do in Europe, we have opened a branch in Singapore, thereby making their access to the financial markets easier, more efficient and more secure.”

SOCIETY PINBOARD

POST-SEASON TRAINING

Look who was SPOTTED in La Sala last month! Liverpool Manager Brendan Rodgers and Arsenal’s former midfielder Freddie Ljungberg.

For five consecutive years, Nordea was named the best provider of private banking services in the Nordic & Baltic region by the international financial magazine Euromoney. Nordea is the leading Nordic provider of international private banking services, and the Nordea Group is Northern Europe’s leading universal bank, with around 11 million customers, more than 1,000 branch offices and EUR 224 billion in assets under management. Nordea is one of the leading international banks in shipping, providing a diversified range of services for that sector. We already have a dedicated team in Singapore with strong market knowledge and structuring capabilities to assist clients in several Asian countries. The new branch will be headed by Eric Pedersen, who started as an analyst in the Bank’s Treasury department, and, since 2000, has worked in senior roles within Asset Management and Private Banking. “Besides our reputation for

seeing things from the client’s point of view, Nordea’s financial strength and the retained AA-rating is clearly an added attraction for wealthy clients looking for a safe and reliable private banking partner,” he says. The Singapore team is composed of experienced, senior private bankers with financial market expertise who are supported by highly qualified operational staff. In the team of account managers are Jonas Bergqvist (Swedish), Haavard Farstad (Norwegian), and Kim Osborg Nielsen (Danish).

CLEAN AND GREEN

SOCIETY PINBOARD

Maid to Perfection is the only 100 per cent green domestic cleaning service on the Costa del Sol

Time is a commodity most busy people just do not seem to have enough of these days. Maid to Perfection gives you one less thing to worry about and one more thing to enjoy. Founded in November 2012 by Donna Chapman and husband Markus Winter, Maid to Perfection tailors each cleaning to meet the client’s needs. Available seven days a week, 365 days a year, covering Elviria to Estepona and specialising in holiday accommodation, changeovers and midweek cleans, you are guaranteed a perfect clean every time or the team will come back and do it again for free.

With many celebrity and high flying clients, the Maid to Perfection team prides itself on discretion. “All our employees will be fully uniformed and prepared to take on even the most challenging task,” explains Donna. “We are a drug free work place and all of our employees are fully background checked prior to being offered a position with our company. Above all, the security of your family and belongings is most important to us. We are licensed and insured so there is never a reason for our clients to worry about the maid who will be coming into their home.”

Aside from providing a truly superior cleaning, there are many benefits when

choosing Maid to Perfection. They typically work in teams of two (but there are times when one is best in a home), which ensures the most efficient cleaning in the least possible time. Giving you a clean, safe and healthy home is their first priority which is why they use 100 per cent biodegradable cleaning products which are free from parabens and animal testing, vegan approved and eco-friendly

“Our mission is exceeding our customers’ expectations,” admits Donna. “We know what our customers want. We specialise in doing the little extra things that set us apart from our competitors. For example we always leave a checklist of work carried out as well as feedback and comment sections. We go the extra mile to make your home or office the best that it can be. We have many regular clients booking us for weekly cleans, house moves, home staging and home organisation. Plus we also offer property maintenance and management dealing with key holding, gardening, airport transfers, pest control, pool care and so on.”

With their company going from strength to strength, Donna was delighted when she was recently approached

by a UK film crew who asked if she would take part in a show about the lives of successful business owners on the Costa. So you may just see Maid to Perfection popping up on our screens in the near future

With an eye on quality and an emphasis on customer satisfaction, you’ll wonder why every service isn’t this good.

LAS BRISAS GOLF RAISES OVER 18.000€ FOR CUDECA HOSPICE!

The Royal Golf Club Las Brisas, located at Nueva Andalucia, held its annual charity Golf Tournament on Sunday 1st May in aid of Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice.

The competition began at 09.30am and the golfers played 18 holes before sitting down to a superb luncheon organised at the club restaurant. The holes were kindly sponsored and the players were encouraged to donate generously; all of them participated in the great auction and bought tickets for the grand tombola.

The event proved to be a huge success and, together with the funds raised during the course of the year, a grand total of 18.000€ was raised for the Hospice, which will help us to continue offering our Special Kind of Caring to patients suffering from advanced cancer and support to their families, as all the assistance provided by Cudeca is completely free of charge.

A special thanks to Gina, Kerrie, Lisa, Marilyn, Yve, Josephine, Karen, Susanne, Kristina, Elaine, Thelma, Gigi,

Britt, Nora, Mary and Caroline for all their support and for making it such a special and successful day.
