PUBLISHER’S LETTER

It’s one of those, “Is that the time already?” moments.

July is here and we seem to have been out and about non-stop since winter ended – just as well we like a good party!

As you will be able to see in our ‘Who’s In Who’s Out’ section (from page 60 onwards), we aren’t the only ones. My oh my, you do love a good time, don’t you, readers? From World Cup fever at everyone’s new favourite Irish bar, Slainte, through Tyga’s session at Aqwa Mist to the Miss Gibraltar pageant at the Rock’s famous Queen’s Cinema and Nikki Beach’s annual White Party, the residents of the Coast have risen to the tough challenge of enjoying themselves and we were there to catch the action as it unfolded.

Now, where’s that packet of Alka Seltzer?

Another person who has never made any secret of being partial to a bit of a party is Lily Allen. She did try to give up life in the limelight but – let’s face it – that was never going to last. Following the collapse of Lucy In Disguise, the fashion company that she set up with her sister, Sarah Owen, Lily returned to the recording studios. “New ideas!” said the fans. “Needs the money, more like!” claimed the cynics. Whatever the motivation behind Allen’s new album, Sheezus has already proved popular with critics and fans alike and the resulting singles, ‘Hard Out Here’ and ‘Air Balloon’ attracted maximum airplay and made their mark on the charts. For the moment at least Lily Cooper, Allen’s domestic alter-ego, seems to have been put on ice while she allows her more controversial, pop diva persona out to play again. Turn to page 18 for our encounter with this talented, occasionally irritating, but never boring star.

If Lily Allen is capable of creating a storm then just imagine how many heads will be turned by the new Lamborghini Huracán? Our lucky resident petrolhead, Ian Kuah, had the opportunity to take Avenida Ramón y Cajal, 7 - 29601 Marbella

this streamlined beauty for a spin and proclaimed it “a pretty wild ride.” Well, no surprise there; Lamborghini has gained an enviable reputation over the years for producing the world’s finest sports cars so it was no wonder that the Huracán has been attracting great notices. Autocar has already dubbed it “the most important car Lamborghini will produce for at least the next three years and, as such, will sell in vastly higher numbers than both the uber-machines from Ferrari and McLaren combined.” No wonder our Ian was so enthusiastic. Read all about it on page 116.

Her other half might have been halfway along the Amazon river filming a BBC documentary, but Mrs. B has been energetically pursuing her business interests - well, someone has to keep the money flowing in to Chateau Beckham! The woman formerly known as Posh Spice has been one of the most recent surprises of the world of fashion, which has long been considered something of a closed shop so, whatever your opinion might be of her lack of technical experience, it cannot be denied that she is punching well above her weight and winning praise from industry insiders such as designer Marc Jacobs and editor of UK Vogue, Alexandra Shulman. Read our feature about her latest career on page 52.

The next couple of months look as though they will be even more full of parties, launches and openings than June and the Society team is more than up for the challenge. Maybe we’ll see you out there somewhere?

Till next time…

Scottish author John Niven reflects on his various encounters with the bold and beautiful Lily Allen

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

18

When I met

LilyAllenLilyAllenBy John Niven

When you listen to Lily Allen’s new album it sounds just like that sharp swipe;like a decade of experience, heartbreak, joy, mischief, pain, trouble and fun: the whole of your twenties wrapped in sleek, brilliant pop music.

Page 19: Society Marbella July 2014

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT

19

‘This is trouble,’ I thought, the first time I saw the girl coming. She was hopping across the sunlit backstage area, dressed as a blue pixie, laughing. Her eyes were like black, bottomless saucers. A man said something rude to her and she turned around, smiled sweetly, and then tore him to pieces. I had no idea who she was – she was just this fizzing cocktail of innocence, fun and abuse. It was at Bestival, on the Isle of Wight, in the summer of 2006. She was barely twenty and, as it turned out, she had just recorded her first number one. The next time I saw her was after an awards ceremony, in a pub in Mayfair. I knew who she was now. Everyone knew who she was now.

She was sitting at a table surrounded by men in expensive suits. There was iced champagne on the table but she looked sad and faraway, like she was being forced to play a game she wasn’t interested in anymore. It was the winter of 2010 and a lot of life, a lot of experience, had happened to her in the four years since I first saw her. I saw her again, recently, across a crowded London restaurant. She was talking, emphasizing a point she was making with a sharp swipe of her hand. She looked happy, clear-eyed, her perfect white teeth bared in a smile. She was twenty-eight now, a wife and a mother of two. When you listen to Lily Allen’s new album it sounds just like that sharp swipe; like a decade of experience, heartbreak, joy, mischief, pain, trouble and fun: the whole of your twenties wrapped in sleek, brilliant pop music. On Sheezus her talent lies not just in mentioning that women get periods in a pop song, but in gleefully mentioning it three times in the same line. And all of this while the lyric goes about its business of dissecting exactly why women in music are automatically assumed to be in some kind of bear pit with each other.

Then you listen to L8 CMMR, which is not so much about a party

guest, or someone slow to latch onto trends, but about your

lover’s lack of powers in the bedroom and your

face lights up as you realize that there is

much here that will offend all the

usual people. And

so what? As the late Sid Vicious said, ‘I’ve met the man in the street. And he’s a ****.’ And then I saw the girl again, on my television. She was singing ‘It’s hard out here for a bitch’ while pretending to hop across the screen like a little bunny, like she was doing at Bestival, all those years ago. Like you never see any of those other women do, in their race to be the sexiest, the raunchiest, the nastiest one on the block. And I thought – wow. Somehow, after seven years in this terrible racket, this sausage factory of the soul, she never lost sight of herself. She’s a wife and a mother and a Global Recording Star (as they say in America) and somehow, still, she’s that saucer-eyed 20-year-old pixie, galloping across a field. She kept her innocence. I must ask her how she did that sometime.

John Niven is a highly acclaimed Scottish author and screenwriter. His books include ‘Kill Your Friends’, ‘The Amateurs’ and ‘The Second Coming’.

Maleficent Angelina Jolie is cast as one of Disney’s most memorable villains, Maleficent from the classic Sleeping Beauty. Motivated by revenge and a strong desire to protect the land over which she presides, Maleficient casts a cruel spell over the king’s newborn daughter Aurora. As the child grows older, she is caught in the middle of a fierce battle over the forest kingdom. This film, which showcases the sinister side of Disney, is set to be a huge hit this summer.

Fast & Furious 7In the seventh instalment of this action-packed film series, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson and Michelle Rodriguez are placed in danger when Ian Shaw (Jason Statham) vows to seek revenge for the death of his brother. The film marks the final appearance of Paul Walker, who passed away last year while the film was still in production.

HerculesThis upcoming American adventure film is based on the graphic novel, Hercules: The Thracian Wars. After completing his legendary twelve labours, the Greek demi-god Hercules, played by Dwayne Johnson, has his life as a sword-for-hire tested when the King of Thrace and his daughter ask him for help in defeating a despotic warlord.

Dawn of the Planet of the ApesAs the sequel to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the story of how simian Caesar presides over the land following the fall of human civilization continues. A surviving band of humans threatens the nation of genetically evolved apes as both sides enter into a bloody battle to establish earth’s dominant species.

Step Up All InThe next chapter of Step Up is located in the glittering showbiz setting of Las Vegas. This could be the hit dance movie’s biggest success, since all the stars from the previous Step Up films come together as one for their toughest battle yet, striving for a victory that will define the rest of their lives.

Listen. Watch. Read. Listen. Watch. Read. By Amber O’Shaughnessy

One Lavender Ribbon by Heather Burch

Disillusioned with the world after a bitter divorce from her husband, Adrienne Carter leaves

The self-titled electro-quartet has caused stirs of excitement

amongst music critics in the past few months. With a sound that is fresher than fresh and an emphasis on forgotten 80s disco melodies, Clean Bandit stormed into the charts with debut single ‘Rather Be’ back in January this year. The fastest selling single this year, ‘Rather Be’ features lots of instrumentation including a violin, piano and a slow bass and set the tone for the sound of the album New Eyes, which was released several months later in May 2014.

Each of the four band members is a Cambridge graduate, two of whom met in a string quartet while studying at university

her life in Chicago for a new start in Southern Florida. She takes residence in a dilapidated Victorian beach house but, while starting renovations on the property, finds a tin box hidden in the attic containing heartfelt letters from a WWII paratrooper to a young lady who used to live in the house. Adrienne can’t help but become absorbed by their story; as she unravels the secrets of the letters, she is forced to question whether she is really that ready to give up on her own true love. An emotional and gripping read, it is impossible to remain unmoved by the charming characters and storyline of this Heather Burch novel.

HOT OFF

THE PRESSThe Vacationers by Emma Straub

This makes for the ultimate holiday read as Straub’s novel follows the lives of the Post family who travel to Mallorca for a two-week break. All the promise of a relaxing vacation in the sunshine soon deteriorates as cracks in the family unit begin to emerge. Childhood rivalries, bitter factions and old humiliations all rise to the surface as the tale of family secrets and jealousies unfolds. Once you start reading The Vacationers, it is most difficult to put it back down.

Mr Mercedes by Stephen King

In a tale of good and evil, Bill Hodges is shaken from early retirement to return to the field and find the killer who murdered a crowd of people in cold blood. As a crowd of desperate unemployed people line up for a spot at the job fair, ruthless Brady Hartsfield charges through the crowd in his Mercedes, killing eight individuals and severely injuring fifteen. Hartsfield will strike again unless Hodges catches up with the insane killer. Fast paced and full of suspense, this novel has ‘Stephen King’ written all over it.

and their classical music expertise really comes into play on the album. Current single ‘Extraordinary’ for example opens with a lone cello before the digital beats of the song ensue – the interaction between the strings and the dance music sounds are a match made in heaven.

This album is scarily current – every track is like looking through a window into the modern city, capturing sounds of technology, traffic and chatter in a way that is clever and irresistibly listenable.

The Only Way is MarbsLong-standing Marbella regulars Gemma Collins, James Argent and Lydia Bright, along with the rest of the TOWIE cast, arrived in Marbella last month to film a special episode of the hit series The Only Way is Essex. The reality TV stars ate at exclusive restaurant La Sala in Puerto Banús before Jessica Wright got up on-stage to sing with Michael Bublé tribute and Sala signature act, Peet Rothwell. The cast spent their days tanning and drinking daiquiris at the Coast’s premier beach clubs, La Sala By the Sea and Plaza Beach. Some of the TOWIE guys spent an evening at Irish sports bar Slainte to watch England’s first World Cup match against Italy. No doubt the cast partied hard and all the drama from their holiday here will ultimately play out on our TV screens.

JLS star JB is set to become a father later this year, he tweeted the news last month writing, “‘Mrs @ChloeSGill is soon to become Mummy Gill!!!!!!!!!!!! Hehehe #jbnews #babygill #excited #cantwaittobeadaddy” with a picture of his pregnant wife Chloe.

The Return of Cherylto the X FactorWith the words, “It’s official. Cheryl is back” music mogul Simon Cowell announced to his nine million Twitter followers that the feisty Geordie will be making a return to the 2014 X Factor. The addition of Cheryl to the judging panel marks her third appearance on the talent show after acting as a judge from 2008 to 2010. In an official comment, Cheryl said, ‘’I’m very happy and excited to be returning to The X Factor. I’m inspired and ready to find new talent and potential pop stars. It’s going to be a fun series.” She then tweeted this photo from the last time she was involved with the show –

strangling Cowell with the caption “GUESS WHAT!!.. I’m baaaacccckkkkk!!!! #iMayActuallyRingHisNeck #XFactor2014”

Cheryl will be joined by former Spice Girl Mel B, X Factor veteran Louis Walsh and Syco Entertainment owner Simon Cowell for the eleventh series of the popular talent show.

Kimberley Walsh, former member of Girls Aloud, is also delighted to be pregnant. Her fellow band members are said to be excited about the birth of Walsh’s tot. In her OK! pregnancy diary, Kimberley wrote “Nicola said in an interview that she cannot wait for me to have the baby so her and Cheryl can go crazy buying presents.” The soon-to-be father of the child is Kimberley’s long term partner Justin Scott.

Everyone’s Talking About

Katie Price is also heavily pregnant but in unhappier circumstances. The glamour model is due to give birth next month to a child with Kieran Hayler who, it has recently been revealed, had been having a full blown affair with Price’s best friend Jane Poutney. Katie announced news of the sordid affair on her Twitter account. We wish Katie all the best with her imminent pregnancy in what must be a difficult time.

It seems celebworld is getting broodier by the day, with

constant pregnancy announcements

filling our Twitter and Instagram feeds.

It all started off fine, with Max tweeting photos of his holiday villa and he was spotted with two stunners at Sintillate Champagne Party and relaxing by the pool at the Puente Romano Hotel. However, it all kicked off after Michelle apparently banned Max from coming to her table at the Sintillate at Pangea Nightclub.

Max decided to vent his anger on Twitter: “T**t. ‘Don’t let him in... Soaps don’t have that power kids. Embarrassing. Is that fame? S***. Better chase that one”, the Daily Mail alleges. He later took to Twitter to tell his 1.3 million followers: “Shouldn’t vent things on twitter. Apologies.”

And if we still didn’t realise how loved up the pair is, the ex-TOWIE star tweeted that, “If you can’t rave with your girl it ain’t gonna be. Couple that raves together stays together #FACT.”

Banús. And it looks like she can’t keep away from the place as she was back again in Marbella after her show at the Gibraltar Love Festival, spotted having a well deserved rest at Ocean Club.

Following his outstanding performance at the Miss Gibraltar competition, a triumphant Ray Quinn was still basking in the glory at the after-party at Boyds nightclub. Pictured here with his wife, West End actress Emma Stephens, the pair danced the night away before heading back to The Sunborn, their home for the night. We loved his tweet “Woah! Monkeys in my room.” Now that‘s a proper Gibraltar experience! Also attending the festivities was Miss England (left) who flew down to The Rock to sit on the board of judges for the Miss Gibraltar competition. Kirsty Heslewood seemed equally enamoured with Gib, tweeting, “Ready for dinner with the minister of culture tonight! Had a lovely day in Gibraltar so far and played with monkey. Love this!! Thank you so much for having me. What a beautiful country.”

Guests were delighted to find themselves being serenaded by British singer-songwriter Lee Ryan at the international launch of Heritage Media, Executive Producers, with offices in the UK and Spain. He performed some of his most famous songs at the private black tie event, but the biggest cheer was for Blue’s ‘One Love’. A newbie to Marbella, he stayed for two days at the luxurious Hotel Villa Padierna, where he enjoyed a game of golf on the award-winning course. Ryan, who is a member of the British boy-band Blue has, with his colleagues, sold over 14 million records worldwide and has had three Number One hits in the UK. During his time on the Coast, footlball loving Lee was also spotted enjoying the World Cup action at Slainte.

Another celeb who can’t seem to stay away from us is Marvin Humes, former member of JLS. He was last here at the end of April, partying with the other lads on JB’s stag do. This time it was all work and no play as he hit the decks at Sleek Nightclub. According to those in the know he was the best celeb DJ ever to perform at Sleek. Not sure if Snoop Dogg will be too pleased to hear that!

CelebsCHECK-IN Who would have

thought that former Pop Idol star, Gareth Gates would be a keen golfer? The British singer, who is now making a name for himself in the West End, has apparently played all over the world, including the Sultan of Brunei’s private golf course. A regular participant at charity golf matches, Gareth took part in a competition at La Cala Golf Resort, before performing at the charity ball.

Joey Essex and his girlfriend Sam Faiers seem to have rekindled their romance if these photos are anything to go by. Wearing matching neon swimwear, the couple couldn’t keep their hands off each other while strolling along a deserted beach in Marbella. We totally LOVE Sam’s neon green Mazzy bikini from Agent Provocateur, not so keen on Joey’s very tight Versace trunks, though.

Gordon Ramsey is back again. He has been spotted at Gaucin, just inland from Estepona and also with his film crew in Puerto de la Duquesa. He spent time chatting to tourists and locals while filming a taste test, in which members of the public passed judgment on samples of food from an ailing restaurant. Since these photos hit the papers, the press have been trying to find out if Mr Ramsey has had a hair transplant, as his locks are looking particularly lustrous. Now who is going to be brave enough to ask him?

Keeping up its reputation as the place to see and be seen, celebrity sightings are coming thick and fast this summer at La Sala restaurant in Puerto Banús. Pictured here dining with his pretty model wife, Ellie Penfold is footballer Jermaine Jenas. currently signed as a central midfielder to Queens Park Rangers. Following an injury earlier in the year, the 31 year-old player is taking time out while still under doctor’s orders.

And another famous face making an appearance at La Sala Banús is Belgian celebrity chef, Yvann Janssens, who made a name for himself in the Belgian TV show, Mijn Restaurant. Now heading up fine dining establishment Condacum te Kontich, at La Sala Banús the celebrated chef enjoyed an evening of fine food and wine with friends.

Also spotted in La Sala Banús this week was international football player Stephen Hunt, currently signed to Ipswich. The

Irishman, who has represented his country in the “beautiful game” since 2007, has played for Ipswich since last year. Hunt, who previously played for Hull City and Wolverhampton Wanderers, loves to spend time in Spain. He enjoyed dinner with friends at La Sala Banús during a brief vacation.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Gemma Wood, is the Head of Counselling & Psychotherapy at the Medical and Psychological clinic, Cortijo Care, based in San Pedro.

Being able to offer someone a moment of happiness, can end up offering them a lifetime of hope.

It is an honour to be introducing what will be an ongoing diary, giving you an insight into the recovery of one of the bravest women I have ever had the privilege to meet. When I first met Claire I was shocked. What was this beautiful, highly intelligent woman doing here? When will I learn to stop judging a book by its cover? Underneath it all was someone to whom we can all relate. Someone who was struggling to cope with everyday life and needed professional help. The most incredible thing is that now that Claire is on the right path; this amazing woman wants to help others by sharing her story with you.

The opportunity to be part of Claire’s journey has been an honour and a privilege for all of the team at Cortijo Care. Today is an especially proud moment to start to share her story, as she reintegrates into society.

When Claire arrived at Cortijo Care three months ago, we witnessed a broken-hearted lady who had been suffering in silence for a long time. The team was able to offer her intense in-patient care, psychiatric support, medical assistance and many forms of psychotherapy groups, one-to-one sessions and eating disorder care.

This was the beginning of Claire’s journey with us.

As a team, the first stage of care consists of two main areas:• Building a relationship of trust with the

individual.• Helping to nurture the willingness of

each person to be open to what we offer and to assist them with their own process.

For weeks Claire was not able to hear nor accept that the improvements she was making were due to her own ability, believing that it was down to the Cortijo Care team. Only three weeks ago, Claire accepted her own journey, efforts and, most importantly “this walking illness” as she described it, was not who she IS. Claire’s acceptance of being ill has evolved over time but she has also accepted that her illness is only PART of her. She has discovered that she has many other facets that will help her in the future.

In order to record her progress Claire kept a diary during her stay at Cortijo Care.

If you had told me three months ago, when living in the UK, that today I would have been putting a deposit down on a rental apartment in Marbella, I would have thought you were crazy. Not because, “It’s the start of the season and prices will double!”; it was because three months ago I was admitted to the Cortijo Care Centre feeling like no-one could feel as low as me.

After struggling for so long with depression, extreme anxiety and, subsequently, the eating disorder bulimia, my life had become unmanageable. Not that I acted like it was; no one else had a clue. I had become a pro at acting like everything was just great. I had the dream job, dream car, dream handbag. Yet, beneath my perfectly blow dried locks was a person who felt unbearably low and suffered horrible panic attacks. I felt like a fraud. The appeal of suicide was growing within me and the anti-depressants the GP had hastily prescribed did nothing.

A psychiatrist, recommended to me by a friend in strictest confidence, (she practically whispered the details over the phone, as if the subject of mental health was not fit for polite discussion) gave me two choices: Ignore how utterly helpless I felt, orEnter into psychiatric, residential care.

Hmm....

So, full of fear, I flew to Málaga to check into the Cortijo Care Centre. I expected a sparse hospital environment but, instead, found a building that looked like a beautiful home and a welcome I’d only expect from friends. The professional team there worked together to get to know the real me. Even I wasn’t even sure who I was; I just felt like a walking illness.

After my stay I’m moving to Marbella because I’d like to continue finding out about who I am, whilst being near the ongoing support offered by the centre. It’s amazing how first class therapy and psychiatric support can make you realise that recovery is possible and the world awaits. Maybe this part of the world will offer me a great new start?

using natural and organic ingredients, combined to work in synergy for an instant anti-ageing effect.

Bee Venom Eyes - Containing Manuka Honey, renowned for its soothing and healing properties, it works to control muscles around the eyes for immediate lifting, tightening and firming.

After Soother – A universally soothing product: apply after waxing, electrolysis, shaving, bug bites, and sunburns. Leaves skin silky smooth and hydrated.

This is a subject very close to my heart and something I truly believe in. What you put on your skin eventually ends up in your body. Certified organic and natural beauty products are made with ingredients that are grown free of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified organisms. They also don’t include harmful additives such as petroleum waxes, fillers and artificial chemicals. Simply put, they are completely healthy and natural, synthetic alternatives are not.

Gone are the days when you had to wade through an incense-filled fog to get your hands on natural beauty products, which didn’t work as well as high-tech potions. Nowadays, most high-end natural brands on the market have evolved from patchouli oil and hemp seed, incorporating luxurious new formulae which provide results without sacrificing your health.

Here are my recommendations:Oskia - Georgie Cleeve founded OSKIA after witnessing first-hand the skincare benefits of MSM, more commonly known as the ‘Beauty Mineral’. A natural form of organic sulphur, MSM boosts collagen production, promotes circulation and helps decrease inflammation for a brighter, younger looking complexion.

Bedtime Beauty Boost - Luxury in a jar. I love it because it’s light, yet rich in nutrients. Containing vitamins and age fighting ingredients such as apple stem cell and hyaluronic acid as well as milk peptides, it brightens and improves the appearance of pigmentation, which is a common problem when living on the Coast.

Get up & Glow - A deliciously lightweight, revitalizing and energising serum which increases cell respiration and ATP energy to brighten and enliven skin. This serum is so rich in nutrients that it can be used on its own in the summer. It can also be used on top of make-up, which is why it can be found in many pro make-up artist’s kits.

Renaissance Mask - Designed to increase cell turnover, boost radiance and packed with OSKIA’s trademark blend of beauty-boosting nutrients, this luxuriously-textured exfoliating mask leaves the complexion smoother, more refined and illuminated.

THE ROCK STAR of Nails

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Manicurist to the stars, Liza Smith, whose client list included the likes of Miley Cyrus and Queen

of Style, Mrs Beckham, is now working with Golden Tarts to bring celebrity inspired treatments to Marbella. When it comes to nails there is no higher authority than Liza Smith. A CND Education Ambassador and British Nail Professional of 2009, she has more than 25 years of salon experience and was nicknamed The Rock Star of Nails by the one and only JLo. Come on - how cool is that?

Liza can be spotted working backstage throughout Fashion Week, initiating future trends on campaigns such as those by Tom Ford, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Burberry, while her work has been seen on the covers of Vogue, Tatler and Harper’s Bazaar. As for her client list, let’s tick off the heavyweights: Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Minogue, Naomi Campbell (who said, “I want to thank Liza Smith for always giving me ‘beautiful nails’ - no-one does nails like Liza”), Kate Moss and Sarah Jessica-Parker to name but a few. With many of her celebrity clients spending time in Marbella, and not being able to be in 10 places at once, Liza wanted to find a talented team of therapists who she could take to the next level. She wanted peace of mind and the knowledge that they could provide the same standard of service. After scouring the Coast she found the perfect match; a salon that was setting trends, producing beautiful ‘in vogue’ nails and offering exactly the style she was looking for. Hence the collaboration between Golden Tarts and Liza.

“Liza spotted something in us,” explains owner Sarah, AKA Golden Tart. “We will be her face in Marbella. Liza has been giving the GT team one-on-one training, passing on her lifetime of knowledge and skills. Not only can we now offer celebrity inspired CND treatments, she has also taught us how to produce show-stopping nails in a very short time frame. As we know, celebs want to be in and out of treatments in as little time as possible, yet still expect high-end results. We can now offer them a superior service.”

While Liza was training the Tarts this month, she took time out of her hectic

schedule to give SOCIETY MARBELLA an exclusive interview.

What have been your career highlights?Being voted Nail Salon of the Year three times in the last three years and being voted Best Nail Care Specialist by Vogue. Another was attending the Oscar Lounges this year, and working with Miley Cyrus during the European leg of her tour. Now that was fun!

Favourite celeb clients?I enjoy working with many clients, though Victoria Beckham is always a particular joy to work with.

Future nail trends? The nail look of the season from A/W14, was Sister by Sibling (now just called Sibling). It was a huge hit with the press. We created medium-length almond nails, painted them jet black, then applied a matte top coat. Lastly we used a blood red to paint a glossy French tip. The contrast of the matte and gloss finishes epitomises the A/W14 trend for clashes of textures. As you would expect, autumn trends sway toward rich tones and I predict rich reds and teal and olive green being the colours of the season.

Why did you decided to collaborate with golden tarts? We were looking for a dynamic brand to take our nail service forward. Golden Tarts is on trend and fashion forward, therefore complementary to the LS Nail boutique, as we both share the same vision.

What will golden tarts now be able to offer the general public? The Tarts will be able to offer celebrity inspired treatments exclusive to their salon, providing a luxury service and specific looks inspired by current trends on the catwalk.

So where is Liza off to next? Touring with Miley Cyrus. Of course she is!

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Fitness and fun for all the family

We all know that we need to exercise if we want to stay healthy, but all

too often our virtuous plans come to nothing, largely due to lack of time, but also because many of us feel more than a little intimidated at the thought of all that gleaming machinery and those buffed bodies.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a friendly place where the whole family could go to enjoy a range of healthy and fun activities?

Fortunately there is such a place; Glow Wellness & Fitness on Puerto Banús’s famous Avenida Playas del Duque contains all the equipment that the dedicated gym bunny could possibly require, but also offers a fabulous range of general fitness activities from water polo, weight training and kick-boxing to Pilates, aerobics and flamenco classes.

With most families on a permanent time-saving mission, the philosophy behind Glow is bound to appeal. Since a full range of professional trainers is on hand, why not leave the youngest members of the family in expert hands and enjoy some time out, either pitting yourself against some very hi-tech equipment or enjoying an aerobics class with some friends? With the whole family in the same place you can stop being a taxi service for a while and join in the fun.

In the past few months the Glow team has been working to ensure that the gym provides a five-star experience to its clientele. The new pool and spa area also contains comfortable dressing rooms and a further touch of luxury in the shape of Turkish baths and saunas.

The spinning room – an essential feature for most serious fitness fanatics these days – has been extended and fitted out with brand new TOMAHAWK bikes and equipment that can offer audio-visual sessions with 6.1 surround sound.

The Glow team has also developed a variety of fitness classes such as ‘Cardio Free style’, ‘Body Power’ and ‘Toning’. If that sounds a little too high impact, why not try an Aqua Tono session instead? This gives quick and effective results and is great fun.

inevitable cries of, “I’m BORED!” start, there is an easy solution.

For families who are especially adventurous there is plenty to do outside the gym as well, from kayaking to paddle surfing. These sessions take place at Puerto Banús and are suitable for all ages. It’s the perfect opportunity to spend some time together outdoors and enjoy the best of the summer weather.

Glow also has its own shop, where you can pick up the right gear for every activity from aerobics to Zumba, plus

everything in between.

The newly revamped cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner to eat in or to take away and the menu has also had a makeover, with new products for sale, including healthy artesanal breads (some of which are gluten-free) containing nuts, cereals, olives and seeds and home-made and bespoke cakes.

Why not drop in and see for yourself how you could achieve that inner and outer Glow this summer?

Tel: + 34 952 908 507 [email protected]

With the beginning of the summer holidays particular attention has been paid to the youngest members of the family. In July and August Glow will be offering intensive courses for children in areas such as swimming, dance and kickboxing, so when the

Victorious THEFASHION DESIGNER

SPICE UP YOUR LIFEVictoria Beckham first entered the world of fame as no-nonsense, sultry and sexy Spice Girl, ‘Posh’. The girl group’s debut single ‘Wannabe’ exploded onto the music charts in 1996, reaching Number One in the UK and 29 other countries. The Spice Girls went on to dominate the pop music scene throughout the 1990s, selling over 55 million records worldwide. They broke all precedents, being brash, louder than life and cheeky. Victoria Beckham as Posh Spice, however, was slightly more demure than her fellow band members; she embodied sophistication and elegance, always appearing in black mini dresses and sporting a well-kept, dark-haired bob.

A FASHION INDUSTRY FORCEThese early days in Victoria’s professional career were perhaps a sign of things to come because, following the breakdown of the Spice Girls in 2000 and a brief stab at a solo music career, Ms Beckham became widely acclaimed for her work in the fashion industry.

Victoria’s initial encounter with the world of fashion and accessories came with her collaboration with American denim brand Rock & Republic, designing her own limited edition collection of jeans called VB Rocks in 2004. These jeans became the ‘it’ item of clothing and allowed Beckham instantly to set her mark in the industry. Following the success of the fashion line, she launched her own denim label - named ‘dvb style’ - in 2007.

Once in a while, the celebrity status of a specific individual ricochets out of control and they achieve fame of global proportions. That person often incites a cult-like following: Victoria Beckham is one such individual.

“When someone like Marc Jacobs, who is so influential, gives you the stamp of approval - that was a big deal for me.”

53

STAMP OF APPROVALThese preliminary fashion ventures laid the path open for Victoria to progress her career further. Beckham made contacts in all the right places, collaborating with Roberto Cavalli, Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz and Marc Jacobs. In a move that

he admitted would be perceived as an odd choice, Marc Jacobs chose Beckham as the face

of his Spring/Summer 2008 campaign. In a joint interview

with Beckham in the Bergdorf Goodman Magazine in 2009,

Jacobs explained: “Fashion is about risks, and I think that both of us work very, very hard… as people who challenge and who take chances and are willing to push the envelope and who refuse to be categorised by what other people think. That’s one of the main attractions of Victoria.” In the same interview, Beckham credited the choice with helping to change people’s preconceptions about her: “When someone like Marc Jacobs, who is so influential, gives you the stamp of approval - that was a big deal for me.” The mum of four was firmly establishing herself in the world of high-end fashion design and, in the process, was successfully shedding the cheesy pop-band image that had shadowed her since the 1990s.

Victoria Beckham’s own fashion label debuted during New York Fashion Week at the Waldorf Hotel in 2008. The launch was an outright success, with pillars of the fashion community commenting that the range was “desirable” and “classy”. The line’s very first season consisted of a select number of 400 dresses, which added to its exclusive appeal, despite each piece retailing from £650.

A PASSIONATE PERFECTIONISTFollowing the success of her first fashion label, VB launched a second, ‘Victoria by Victoria’, at Harvey Nichols in January 2012. By this stage, the 40 year-old’s fashion credentials were progressing from strength to strength, with Vogue observing that it was the confident simplicity and artful use of colour of the designs that made them so unique. “She takes conventional dresses and makes them stand out,” said British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman. Beckham’s designs continue to be chosen by high profile celebrities such as Michelle Williams, Gwyneth Paltrow and Blake Lively for their red carpet appearances.

Being named one of the UK’s most influential women in BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour 2013 Power List, Beckham continues to enthral and fascinate her so-called fashion bunnies and the rest of the world. Speaking at the Vogue Festival in April 2013, Victoria said, “You have to be prepared to start at the bottom and work up.” Plucked from obscurity to join the Spice Girls, Victoria has refrained from becoming another has-been celebrity from the 1990s, making her mark on the cut-throat world of high fashion. She announced early in 2014 that she would open her first stand-alone store on London’s Dover Street later in the year: this is undoubtedly one of the star’s most prominent achievements to date and is testament to her strong work ethic and commitment.

“She takes conventional dresses

and makes them stand out,”

Alexandra Shulman.

SUNBORN SUMMERLOUNGE PARTY

The SOCIETY team flocked to the Sunborn superyacht hotel for their debut Summer Lounge party, where Hans Niemi, Olivier Six and Tiernan Redmond invited a bevy of glamorous guests and dignitaries onboard for champagne, supper and entertainment. On arrival guests were serenaded by a string quartet, whilst Sarah Howard was on hand on the upper deck, singing sizzling summer tunes. Post-dinner, guests were awed by the on-board magician, while party-goers hit the Sky Bar to get down to the grooves of the resident DJ, which probably explains why no one toddled home before midnight.

HOME COUTURE

There’s never been a truer saying than “a house doesn’t make a home”. A property can be furnished to the highest standards but it won’t ever feel like a home if you fail to include your own style in the aesthetics of the residence. A simple and effective method is doing this through statement pieces: these are items with which you will have a

97

connection, whether they conjure up a memory or simply lift your mood. These statements are evidence of your personality and taste that will help to transform a house into your home.

The beauty of statement pieces is that they can be diverse and can either compliment or contrast with your

interiors. They can be objects collected on your travels or saved up for over the years, but they will all have a story. These items are the soul of the house, statements that can make a person look twice, giggle, blush or smile in appreciation but, more importantly, they always mean something to you.

Good lighting is an investment and can easily transform a room. Statement chandeliers and pendant lamps can easily be used to create a mood and decorate a negative space.

Stepping away from the more ornate, classic chandeliers and looking for something with a contemporary twist seems to be all the rage.

Everything from used bottles to motorbike headlamps can create fun and funky lighting and whether a retro, “Circus Circus” inspired wall lamp or a hand blown, turquoise tinted pendant, imaginative lighting is crucial in finishing a room.

Although indirect lighting is great to create a mood, a statement light can be a real eye-catcher, doubling up as sculpture as well as a source of light. Whether you are looking to add romance and soften a look or need a stand-alone funky statement, there is something for everyone. The eclecticism in design enables everyone to find their perfect radiant edition.

We all know that practicality is generally rule number one when it comes to the larger, everyday items but this does not mean that the pieces have to be stagnant and lifeless. A great way to add colour and a bit of glamour is a central statement piece. Many furniture suppliers run limited editions of some very unusual and special pieces that might be just what you are looking for.

The Bell Table by Sebastian Herkner, for example, turns our perception on its head, using the lightweight, fragile material of glass as a base for a metal top that seems to float above it. These hand-blown beauties are made using traditional hand craftsmanship and are available in a variety of different colour

CheerfulCHATTELS

finishes. The Bell, with its elegant curves and distinct design, is a perfect example of that one-off statement piece that has everyone talking.

Soft furnishings can add fun and frivolity to any room - adding a strong pattern or colour can lift a design concept. The use of strong colour does not mean that the design will be garish or the room will be overpowered. Use strong accent tones sparingly – several decorative cushions or one colourfully upholstered chair is a clever way to give your room that kick it needs.

Art is possibly the most expressive item of your interior. Whether it is employed to evoke a debate or express part of your own character, photography, painting and sculpture are items that will be with you for a long time.

Photography can now be printed onto so many different substances that artists are combining photography with a variety of materials. Printing onto metals, such as aluminium, or perpex and adding a liquid gloss finish over the print are just some of the formats that create jaw-droppingly gorgeous collective pieces. Some of the most talented photographers work with art houses and distributors to offer their works in more affordable and creative forms. Graphic designers and illustrators alike are also working with manufacturers offering a contemporary twist on traditional oil on canvas.

Extra large print sizes mean that these items can potentially fill an entire wall and colours can be tweaked to even blend more harmoniously with the colour scheme of the interior. The opportunities are endless!

Motoring author, racing driver and photo-journalist Ian Kuah reports on

the Lamborghini Huracán

Lamborghini’s Gallardo successor sets new class benchmarks

TORQUE TALK

Page 118: Society Marbella July 2014

When the Gallardo first saw the light of day in 2003, it was billed as the ‘baby’

Lamborghini. However, its outstanding all-round performance saw it widely recognised as a complete car in itself, and that initial perception quickly faded.

From day one to lights out a few months ago, Gallardo production totalled 14,022 units. When you consider that Lamborghini’s entire production from its founding in 1963 was only around 30,000 cars, the Gallardo stands as the most important model in Lamborghini’s 51-year history.

Now, an all-new factory in Lamborghini’s hometown of Sant ‘Agata Bolognese has opened to produce the all-new LP610-4 Huracán, which the company hopes to sell in even greater numbers.

Today however, we are at the Ascari Race Resort in Spain to find the Huracán’s limits in relatively safe conditions before venturing out onto public roads. With 26 corners distributed over its 5.4 km length, Ascari is a very technical circuit with elevation changes, a short main straight and a long back straight.

The pace cars are Aventadors, each with one of Lamborghini’s very experienced factory test drivers at the helm. Following Marco Passerini, one of these legendary drivers around provided a very telling picture of the Huracán’s capabilities.

Lamborghini had coned off the first of the kinks on the back straight to produce

118

a chicane that would give us a feeling for the Huracán’s agility and ability to deploy its power effectively out of a slow, tight S-bend.

With a 100hp advantage and much more torque from its larger displacement V12, the Aventador easily pulled away down the long straight bits. However, the Huracán was all over the rear of its big brother in the slower, twistier sections.

It was also clear that the flagship Lamborghini gains a mechanical grip advantage from its longer wheelbase and wider tracks. While Marco told me that he was just shy of drifting the pace car out of every turn, I was exiting about a third of the bends with a whiff of power oversteer. A subsequent conversation with Marco on the comparative grip limits of both cars confirmed this observation.

With its slightly lower levels of outright grip, the Huracán is huge fun to punt around a racetrack. On standard street tyres as our test cars were, it tends towards initial understeer, which you have to compensate for by trimming back entry speed, taking a slightly later turn-in and keeping everything smooth and tidy.

As you progressively add throttle through a bend, you can feel the 4WD system shifting power aft and the back end rotating round. How far it goes is then down to how you use the steering and throttle.

With progressive throttle application, the crisp, naturally-aspirated V10 motor

TORQUE TALK

rapidly picks up revs, its deep, offbeat, primary note building to a spine tingling scream as you reach the point where you choose a near neutral or oversteering exit.

The handling is very user friendly in this respect, the clever diffs and electronics helping the driver on the limit in a fairly transparent way. All this requires a lot of high-speed data transfer capability, and so the Huracán has a FlexRay section within its CAN-BUS network, a first in this segment.

Feeling the limitations of the street rubber, I was curious to know how the Huracán would fare on trackday rubber. “As you would expect, Cup tyres take the handling and grip to the next level,” explained project leader, Federico Foschini. “There is less initial

Page 119: Society Marbella July 2014

TORQUE TALK

119

understeer, and a more progressive transition to oversteer thanks to the stiffer side walls, reduced tread depth and stickier compound.”

At the other end of the scale, It was also interesting to try the Strada (Street) mode on track, but it took less than half a dozen mushy feeling corners before I flicked the switch to Sport and then Corsa for the last two laps.

Lamborghini has placed the Huracán perfectly in its class in terms of looks, performance, handling and interior appointments. It is a completely different kind of car from big brother Aventador, which remains a faster, more brutal and less compromising all-round experience.

That user friendliness opens the doors to new clients, some of whom may never have owned a mid-engined supercar before. With high expectations from owners of super-saloons like the Audi RS6, BMW M5 and E63 AMG, the Huracán is well placed to be that first supercar.

While the dynamic and ergonomic step up is crystal clear for existing Gallardo owners, the 10-year-old design still looks cutting edge in any company today. Only its comparatively firm ride quality and jerky old school e-gear system are

seen as major flaws in today’s more sophisticated supercar world.

Variable ratio steering is a potential can or worms, and I have encountered some pretty awful systems over the years. However, electro-hydraulic systems are potentially more accurate at apportioning variable assistance than hydraulic ones, and Lamborghini’s system is one of the better ones.

With the ability to alter its steering ratio by almost 100-percent, from 9:1 to 17:1, the system delivers the most assistance up to 50km/h to help you in the car park and around town. It then backs off to a less sensitive ratio over 100km/h to reduce nervousness at speed. A party trick is its delivery of tiny, targeted counter steering impulses to help the driver cope with understeer and oversteer during load transfer.

Dubbed the ANIMA, (Adaptive Network Intelligent Management, and also Italian for soul, the system that changes the dynamic character of the Huracán, is operated by a flick switch near the bottom of the steering wheel.

With a choice of Strada, Sport and Corsa, ANIMA alters the engine, gearbox, steering and chassis response,

and thus the cars character and behaviour. ESC can be completely disengaged via a separate button.

In Strada (Street) mode, the Huracán is as user friendly as a car of this type can be. Left to it’s own devices, the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox delivers up and downshifts as well mannered as you would expect from the automatic transmission in a premium family saloon.

Flick the easy-to-use switch on the steering wheel to Sport and ratio changes take place noticeably faster, with the steering and chassis responses also going to a higher level of alert.

Unlike with some rivals, Corsa (Race) mode is not an overly hyper experience on public roads, but is the defualt setting for the race track. As with all such systems, Sport is the best overall compromise for an engaging driving experience on the road.

Suspension is by racecar style double-wishbone suspension with lightweight forged aluminium arms. MagneRide damping is an option. Personally I would have expected them to be standard since active damping is part and parcel of the Huracán’s rivals from Ferrari and McLaren.

While the high quality interior is totally fresh, a very important addition is the long aluminium paddle shifter on each side of the steering column. The spindly plastic VW Group shift stalks were a frustrating ergonomic weak point of the Gallardo.

TORQUE TALK

“It was a question of using the right materials in the right places... Our aim was to make the structure stronger and lighter...”- Design Chief, Filippo Perini.

Page 121: Society Marbella July 2014

TORQUE TALK

The big 12.3-inch TFT screen is black with the ignition off but lights up with big, clear graphics that prioritise the rev counter. You can then quite intuitively scroll through the multiple functions with the buttons on the console and steering wheel.

Although the steeply raked front screen has approximately the same angle as the Gallardo’s, the relationship of the driver to the A-pillars, and its profile has changed for the better. Where I had a partial visibility blind spot going into left hand sweepers in the Gallardo, no such problem exists with the Huracán.

The structure is largely aluminium. Carbon-fibre is used for the rear bulkhead, centre tunnel and the aft third of the side sills, and bonded to the aluminium monocoque. The body panels are mainly aluminium with some composite parts.

“It was a question of using the right materials in the right places,” explained design chief, Filippo Perini. “Our aim was to make the structure stronger and lighter, and we achieved a torsional stiffness of around 30,000 Nm/degree, a 50-percent improvement.” At 1,422 kg (dry) the Huracán is 10-percent lighter than the Gallardo, and weight distribution is 42/58 percent front/rear.

“Using more carbon-fibre as on the Aventador was not necessary to achieve our target numbers of weight and stiffness, and in any case would have taken us beyond the cost limits set for this project,” he said.

While the drag coefficient is about three-percent better, of more significance is the 50-percent greater downforce achieved without any moveable aerodynamic aids. “We did a huge amount of work in the wind-tunnel to reach our goal of a simple and pure shape without wings or big spoilers,” he explained. “With no motors to move things we also saved weight and complexity.”

The result is a taut and modern design that still carries all the trademark Lamborghini styling cues, but is less blatantly angular than its predecessor. I stop short of using the words ‘more rounded’, but it is in fact a visually softer design.

The 5,204cc 90-degree, dry-sump V10 motor with variable valve timing is an evolution of the Gallardo motor with the same under-square 84.5 x 92.8mm bore x stroke dimensions. A lot of the internal components have been uprated or more finely honed, and the compression ratio is an amazing 12.7:1.

Fuelling is by a dual-injection system using IDS + MPI. This combination of direct and multi-point injection is required to meet the Euro 6 emission standards.

The IDS half provides better start-up fuelling and top-end power, while

Page 122: Society Marbella July 2014

122

TORQUE TALK

MPI provides indirect fuelling into the manifold for better economy and emissions at low crankshaft speeds. Both systems work simultaneously at medium speeds and engine loads. Overall control comes from the Bosch MED 17 engine management system.

The high-revving V10 produces 610hp at 8,250rpm and 650Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. Significantly, 75-percent of peak torque is available at just 1,000rpm, making this an exceptionally tractable motor.

Sheer grunt is not this motor’s only strong suit. Response is a vital part of the sporting feeling in such a car and the engine is able to achieve a faster ‘tip in’ than the Gallardo, which means it can gather more revs in a shorter time for better throttle response and a livelier feeling.

The seven-speed LDF dual-clutch transmission comes from Graziano, and shares its bell housing with the S-Tronic unit in the Audi R8. However, the internals are different as the gear ratios are bespoke to the Lamborghini.

The power-to-weight ratio is an impressive 2.33 kg/hp. With Launch Control engaged, the Huracán will spin all four wheels for a second as it blasts to 100km/h in 3.2 sec, 0-200km/h in 9.9 sec and on to its top speed of 325km/h.

The multi-plate clutch that looks after power distribution normally runs with a 30/70-percent front/rear power split.

But it can send up to 50-percent of peak toque to the front axle, and 100-percent to the rear if needs be.

Sitting on 8.5J and 11.0J x 20-inch lightweight alloys shod with 245/30ZR20 and 305/30ZR20 Pirelli PZero rubber, the Huracán has space for massive brakes too. These are 380 and 356mm diameter vented ceramic discs clamped by six-pot calipers in front and four-pots at the rear.

The Huracán may be aimed directly at the Ferrari 458 and McLaren 12C/650S, but it has a completely different character from either. Using active damping (an option in the case of the Lamborghini), all three ride very well for their genre, offering a level of daily use refinement that was unheard of just five years ago.

Crucially, like the Porsche Turbo S, the Huracán’s all-wheel-drive system makes it an all-weather supercar, a clear advantage to potential clients in some markets.

Over its ten-year life, the Gallardo spawned a long list of variants, some just rear-wheel-drive. Lamborghini told us that the Huracán will see a more normal four year + four year cycle and a few more highly focused derivatives along the way. One thing is certain though. With a car this good as the starting point, we are in for a pretty wild ride.

What’s in a name? For those new to the marque, Ferrucio Lamborghini was the wealthy owner of a tractor manufacturing company in Sant’Aga Bolognese, down the road from Ferrari’s perch in Modena.

The story goes that Ferrucio was very upset by the unreliability of a Ferrari he owned and had a big falling out with Enzo Ferrari over it, telling him as they rowed that he could build a better car.

Ferrucio’s star sign was Taurus, the bull, hence the raging bull that appears on the crest of his marque. After his first two cars, the 350GT and 400GT, Ferrucio adopted the monikers of famous fighting bulls for subsequent Lamborghini production models.

However, as bull fighting is not an Italian sport, those names are actually Spanish. Huracán, (pronounced Hoo-rah-can) is Spanish for Hurricane.

O ver the past few decades various long-haul destinations have established themselves as firm

favourites with European travellers and few attract visitors like Thailand. There is something about the landscape and culture of this remarkable country that regularly wins over new fans who then become the next generation of repeat tourists.

However, for those of us who lack the time and/or financial resources to return every year but desperately wish to relive days on the beach in Ko Samui or those crazy nights in Bangkok, there is always the consolation of Thai cuisine, which these days can be accessed in most decent sized towns in Europe.

Be warned though – not every restaurant that purports to specialise in Thai food is capable of going that little bit further to produce dishes that are truly authentic. We inhabitants of Marbella are very lucky to have a decent range of excellent restaurants that produce superb Asian cuisine, yet few are better placed than Naga Thai to attract locals and tourists alike.

The team’s generously proportioned premises are located in the popular Centro Cristamar, near El Corte Inglés in Puerto Banús, which has guaranteed Head Chef Prasar Jansong a reliable mixture of interested passing trade and dedicated Naga Thai clientele.

Prasar, who hails from the city of Trang in the south of Thailand, is especially influenced by that region’s traditional cuisine, which favours spicy dishes that owe their origins to Malay, Indonesian and Indian food. Naga Thai’s take-away and catering services offer customers alternative ways of enjoying its menu at home or at a special event.

We have visited Naga Thai several times since it first opened its Puerto Banús operation in 2005 under the ownership of Carl Vincke and have never had a bad experience, a feeling that was only reinforced by conversations with local enthusiasts, who have taken the restaurant to their hearts as a reliable source of tasty Thai dishes.

The place was buzzing when we arrived for our meal - not that there is anything

unusual about that. We found a table outside the restaurant and settled down for a serious session of people watching; there are few places on the planet that deliver quite as many interesting sights as this part of Marbella and the season was beginning to deliver the annual influx of tourists, many of whom seemed to be out and about looking for the most promising restaurant.

The menu alone is enough to give lovers of Thailand a Proustian rush but, coupled with the fabulous aromas emerging from the kitchen, we could not wait to flag down a waiter and place our orders.

Our starters consisted of the Satay Gung (Grilled Prawns Satay served with a glorious Peanut Sauce and Pickled Cucumbers) and the Pho Phia Thod (Fried Spring Rolls with Glass Noodles, Carrot, Mushroom, Spring Onion and Coriander). Both of these choices represented what is so wonderful about Asian cuisine: subtlety of flavour and brilliant combinations of textures that constantly surprise and a dedication to using only the freshest of ingredients.

Selecting our main courses was not at all easy, given the many delicious dishes

on offer. We eventually ordered the Pla Thod Samun Prai (Fried Dorada with Thai Herbs), the Shu Shi Kung (Grilled King Prawns with rich Red Curry Sauce and Kaffir Leaves), the Nuea Yang Chao Wang (Grilled Tenderloin with Royal Thai Green Curry), the Ped Som (Crispy Duck with Orange Sauce Thai Style) and the famous Naga Thai Geang Phed Ped Yang (Crispy Duck in Red Curry with Coconut Milk, Tomato, Paprika, Courgette, Pineapple and Grapes). If you think that you ‘know’ crispy duck because there’s this quite decent Chinese restaurant just down the road that you like to go to sometimes, believe us – if you haven’t experienced the wonderful things that Chef Prasar does you really have not lived.

Fitting all these dishes onto our table was quite a difficult task but, oh, so worthwhile. We were all impressed, not only by the authenticity of the whole Naga Thai experience but by the range of flavours that Thai cuisine delivers. Do not be afraid to be adventurous, for Thai food rewards those who make the

decision to roam into areas that they do not normally stray.

With a rice pudding lover in the party (no, really – she obviously has no bad memories of school dinners) we decided to try the Kao Neaw Ma Muag (Sticky Rice with Mango) for dessert. Put aside all thoughts of traditional rice pudding or even the more imaginative Spanish sweet rice creations, this was just superb and was the perfect end to a wonderful meal.

Whether you have never been to Thailand or are an enthusiastic regular visitor, Naga Thai will have you booking your ticket to Phuket. Book a table today – you will love it.

A ll respectable bodegas have a wine, which is considered their best, most well known

and well regarded. Such a wine would be their “First Label” or Premium Brand - usually expensive and made in restricted quantities.

These bodegas also produce a so-called “second label” wine, which are less expensive, of high quality and far more readily available.

Some of the best value wines in the world often come from a well-known producer’s second label. These wines are made from the same vineyards and by the same talented winemaker, they are always of high quality and offer great value for money when compared to the most heralded wine of the bodega.

At D-Wine you can find and enjoy a collection of the best seconds from Spain; very high quality wines produced by some of Spain´s leading winemakers and selling for a fraction of the price of their first label releases. Come and enjoy a taste of excellence at a very reasonable price.

Julio César Garcia Valdés is one of the sommeliers at new wine bodega and fine dining restaurant, D-wine. Every month he brings SOCIETY Marbella’s readers insider knowledge and wine recommendations. In this issue, he tells us about ‘second label’ wines, which boast unbeatable quality and taste at a lower price point than the more renowned wine labels.

Have we mentioned how much we love the summer season? Well, perhaps a few million

times, I suppose - but who can blame us for our enthusiasm when this is the time of year that we have such a wide choice of brilliant restaurants?

One of our current favourites is Del Mar, which opens its doors from June to September. Part of Puente Romano’s Beach Club, Del Mar is the perfect place to enjoy a light lunch in relaxed yet elegant surroundings. The décor has been heavily influenced by the restaurant’s surroundings and features loads of über-attractive white decking and driftwood, which adds an organic feeling to this very comfortable and welcoming establishment. Taking a leaf out of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s book and uniting the interior with the exterior has been a

master-stroke; sitting at a table in Del Mar really does feel like a natural extension of enjoying the beach.

Naturally a great deal of attention has been paid to ensuring that the menu perfectly reflects the beach house ethos and offers dishes that are fresh and full of flavour, yet sufficiently light to allow diners to enjoy the afternoon on the beach. What can be worse than feeling overfull, bloated and unable to appreciate your surroundings?

Page 129: Society Marbella July 2014

Word of Del Mar’s fish and seafood influenced menu had already reached the Society offices from several trusted sources and we arrived at the restaurant determined to sample as many of these dishes as possible. The meal that resulted was one of our most memorable food tastings, mixing dishes from the Starters and Fresh Mediterranean Fish and Seafood sections, which went some to prove that Del Mar delivers the best beach-side experience.

We started with the Lobster and Melon with Thai Dressing (which tasted as glamorous as it looked) and the Grilled Split Jumbo Prawn. There is no finer Marbella moment than enjoying seafood while enjoying some of the best views of the Mediterranean, especially if you are planning to swim in it as soon as you have recovered from lunch. The fresh ‘just caught’ flavours were magnificent, the Thai dressing enhancing, rather than masking the lobster.

The Artichoke, Avocado and Asparagus Salad, although an ideal light lunch in its own right, made an excellent accompaniment to the Seared Red Tuna ‘Taco’ with Sesame Seeds, Rocket and Terriyaki Sauce.

Hearing that Sushi was available we also ordered the Salmon, King Prawn and Tuna Nigri – a good decision, since the delicate raw fish contrasted wonderfully with the Seared Red Tuna that we had just eaten.

Our final main dishes were the California Roll, which consisted of Crab, Avocado and Cucumber and the King Prawn Tempura Roll which also contained Crab and Avocado.

To complete this feast we ordered three desserts: White Chocolate Mousse, Lemon Tart and Strawberry Pavlova. We know that Del Mar’s Dessert Menu will be a big summer hit; after all the healthy fish and seafood it is impossible not to yield to temptation. These three dishes will delight anyone with a sweet tooth.

Del Mar is a winner on every front – the clientele on the day that we visited incorporated everyone from young couples with children to well-heeled senior citizens, a tribute to its friendly, laid-back ambience, not to mention its delicious food.

Whether you are looking for a great place to meet a business contact for lunch or a top quality restaurant with beach access, Del Mar delivers perfection from décor to dessert.

The Wonders

MEANT TO BE…We were young, crazy and care free at 17 years old. We knew of each other through friends and in the few times we would bump into each other I would sometimes get a wink and a smile and he would get a little wave back. Who would have known that 17 years later, I would be married to him!

Bhavesh and I met again after some years at a fitness centre and we recognised each other straight away. We started to meet up as friends and realised that we shared the same interests how-ever our friendship drifted slowly

apart and we became quite busy in our own lives but we would call each other now and again over the years just to catch up until one day we decided to meet, enjoying each others company so greatly we began to spend more and more time together before falling completely and utterly in love.

Two years later, we had been well acquainted with each other’s fam-ily and friends and we had been on a few holidays together and we were definitely ready to take the next step in our relationship. It was just a case of him popping the question. Last September we

went to Cuba and that was where Bhavesh proposed to me. We were on a tiny island off the south coast of Cuba and on our last night on the island (we were due to fly to Varadero the next day to continue our holiday), Bhavesh had booked us a table at a restau-rant. When we arrived, I was sur-prised to see that he had arranged for us to dine in a private cabana that was beautifully decorated with candles, flowers and white curtains that were softly blowing in the breeze. During our meal, we were serenaded with beautiful Spanish love songs. At this point he told me that he did this for me

because he loved me and he just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing girlfriend and so I still had no clue what he was about to do.

It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precau-tion as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amaz-ing times we had been through together over all the years we had known each other. He then sud-denly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I turned around to see what he was pointing at, and as I looked down, a light shone on to the rocks where there was a sign that read, ‘Marry Me?’. I then turned back around to see that Bhavesh had got down on one knee! He told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life and more with me

and then he asked me to marry him - my response was a mixture of laughter and tears, and of course, I said ‘Yes!’.

We went back to our table where we finished off our champagne, when Bhavesh told me he had another surprise for me! What could possibly be better than this? I thought he may have booked us in for a spa day or he would take me shopping… No. He had booked us both in for a skydive! Fancy being proposed to and then kicked out of a helicopter at 12000 ft... romantic at first, daringly devil-ish to end.

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme through-out. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a desti-nation close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

I wanted a wedding with a dif-ference and I loved the idea of our closest friends and family all coming to celebrate our wedding abroad and also enjoying a holi-day at the same time. We decided to have a three day event, with the first being the mendhi night. The second day was a leisure day at the Crowne Plaza Estepona with golf and spa in the morning, a pool party in the afternoon and a dinner in the evening and the last day was our big day - with the Vedic Hindu ceremony in the

morning, the blessing ceremony in the afternoon followed by cock-tails and the reception party into the night. All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own.

I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pil-lars surrounding the amphithe-atre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chup-pah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combina-tion against the sunlight and the greenery.

After the sounds of the Span-ish guitar and a few champagne cocktails later, guests were ushered to the reception on the outdoor terrace surrounded by olive trees with suspended Chi-nese lanterns and wicker hearts. Surprises for our guests, and our selves, were ‘wow’ factors starting with flamenco dancing, speeches and performances from our loved ones to large glow sticks on our entrance, a live bongo player over a UK DJ spinning the best beats and then a firework finale.

Real Weddings

Michael and Melanie married in a elegant

two day celebration surrounded by their

family, friends and son, Dexter.

CONFETI48

TrueBlueOUR STORY…Michael and I met through work-

ing and living in Marbella, in the Real Estate sector about 8 years ago. I was working for a property developer and Michael for a renowned Real Estate company. He was professional, charming, polite and had a very kind way about him, with a hint of mischief in those blue eyes. After a few years of not seeing each other, we bumped into each other again and decided to meet up for coffee or in my case tea, and hence forth became good friends. We were work-ing for different companies by then and we would meet up to chat, laugh, tell each other our woes over a bit of lunch or din-ner. Michael was my sounding board and confidante. We really enjoyed each others company, everything was easy and uncom-plicated. One day shortly after one of my birthdays, (not telling my age of course) we met up as normal and things changed, ‘we kissed’ and Michael and Melanie was born.

Michael proposed 2 months later, on the last day of an amazing cruise holiday, with a beautiful ring. It was a wonder-ful surprise and before we could even start planning the wedding, I was pregnant.

CONFETI 49

and the wedding date, given to all the ladies turned out to be a real treat and also proved to be an excellent memento for our friends and family.

OUR MOST TREASUREDMOMENTS…It is hard to select just one

moment from our wedding day as each and every minute was perfect. However when I entered the church and Julie-Ann our soprano singer began singing Ave Maria my heart melted. She also dedicated a song to us dur-ing the reception dinner, which created a very special memory for Michael and myself. I think the funniest moment had to be when my mother was doing her Flamenco dance and Dexter de-cided he couldn´t be without his grandmother, ‘Abu’ for even one moment so he decided to join her on the dance floor! Above all, having everyone we love and cherish together for two whole days ultimately made our wed-ding everything we could have ever wished for and more.

OUR VISION…Spain holds a very special place in our hearts as we have both lived here for many years and our son Dexter was born in the Costa del Sol Hospital. Our vi-sion was to share our wedding and this special time in our lives with our loved ones. We knew we wanted to get everyone all together and for our nearest and dearest to be a part of our initiation into married life and in addition, for some, who had not yet had the pleasure, to meet our darling son.

We chose Villa Tiberio as our location as it is decorated with such wonderful gardens and fountains. A simple colour scheme of just off-white and pale blue was selected, which perfectly complemented our simple and elegant vision. We adorned the main table with blue crystals and chose invitations, place cards and a stunning seating plan in the same hues. The pale blue Spanish fans, embellished with our names

Real Weddings

Our love story began when Jake

struck up a conversation in a queue

for the cashpoint in London! Sadly

the timing was terrible, as he had

just booked a three-month ‘Boys

Only’ trip to South America. How-

ever we kept in touch, complete with

astronomical phone bills until Jake

send me a plane ticket (much to

the annoyance of his friends on the

trip,) and suddenly South America

became our own romantic holiday

Jake and Laufey celebrated their timeless nuptials at the eternally stylish Villa del Mar.

and the beginning of the rest of our

lives. Jake proposed in a restaurant

in Paris in 2010 then a few months

later I fell pregnant with twins hence

our wedding plans got put on hold

for a little while.

My vision for our wedding was sun,

sea, flowers and glamour. I really

wanted to get married outside, either

on a beach or somewhere sur-

rounded by beautiful blooms in the

At the Water’s Edge

sunshine. About three years earlier

Jake and I (newly engaged) were

walking down the Marbella beach

front and decided to go for a drink at

The Marbella Club beach restaurant.

We then had a little walk through the

hotel grounds and I instantly knew

that I had found the destination of

my dreams. The hotel’s private villa,

Villa del Mar is beautiful and holds all

of its charm from the 1950’s. I could

visualise all the glamorous parties

that took place there in the past and

that’s how I visualised my wedding;

classic, glamorous and timeless.

Initially I had a very different idea of

how I wanted my wedding, I thought

I wanted more of a hippy relaxed

feel to everything but as soon as I

saw the venue everything changed.

The entire wedding was perfect but

I would have to say the most senti-

mental moments were the speeches

and, of course, the ceremony.

Seeing all of our family and friends

together and knowing that they had

all flown in from across the world

was amazing. The fact that they all

enjoyed themselves as much as we

did was truly the icing on the cake.

This month SOCIETY Marbella was invited to attend the Official Press Conference for the presentation of Gitano - the up-coming show of world-renowned flamen-co dancer Joaquín Cortés.

Joaquín has not performed for some time so he has vowed to make this summer’s show his most spectacular and ambitious production ever, involving a crew of over 40 people including 17 onstage musi-cians. His good friend Giorgio Armani has designed all of the dancer’s costumes.

Gitano, which will last just over two hours, is very much Joaquin’s own production. Cortés, who is famed for his ability to fuse flamenco with other distinct forms of dance, will bring this variety of musical styles to the show in July. Spectators will be treated to a musical medley of jazz, Arabic influences, South American beats and gospel.

Joaquín Cortés’s Gitano will take place on 25 & 26 July at the Tennis Stadium at the Puente Romano Hotel. All details of the concerts can be found on the official website: joaquincortesmarbella.es Tickets are available at El Corte Inglés and TicketMaster.

As World Cup Fever grips the globe La Sala Group shareholders, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Raheem Sterling, had their first bittersweet taste of World Cup football in the England squad, making headlines in Brazil before enduring the disappointment of leaving the tournament following the team’s defeat by Uruguay in their second game.

Raheem Sterling, 19, the Jamaican born winger, who plays for Liverpool, impressed the football fraternity with a fine first performance in England’s opening match against Italy and was

Sala Group Chairman Ian Radford married long-term partner Claire Strutton last month at Stoke Place in Buckinghamshire, UK. More than 200 guests enjoyed the five-star festivities over a four-day period, which included a trip to Royal Ascot races and a day at Buckinghamshire Golf Club. On the day itself, famous singer Alexander O’Neal entertained the wedding party with his soulful voice before Marbella signature act Masquerade Duo flew in to keep the party going until the early hours.

Sala Group Shareholders Debut in World Cuptouted as arguably the best player in Roy Hodgson’s squad.

Meanwhile, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, 20, who is signed to Arsenal, made an impressive debut for England against Italy, vying for position with Wayne Rooney. Oxlade made a name for himself as the youngest English goal scorer in UEFA Champions League history by scoring twice in his first three games for the club.

As La Sala UK prepares for kick off in Chigwell, Essex in September 2014, Sterling and Chamberlain will be aiming for success in business as well as on the pitch.

The Sala brand has successfully operated in Spain for over five years. With strong links to the world of professional football, Sala Group counts several premiership footballers among its shareholders and the company is considering expansion into the global arena in the near future. Lasala.co.uk

The British café encompasses all manner of

establishments, from traditional greasy spoon to try-hard trendy breakfast bistro. Sometimes simplicity is best. At Neli G’s you will find friendly staff serving up fresh and tasty dishes in a café that is both welcoming and relaxed. It’s one of those ‘anything goes’ establishments – the best kind, in my opinion.

From mother and baby groups to motorcyclist clubs, Neli G’s delivers on everything you could possibly want from a café; milkshakes made with real chocolate bars, freshly baked cakes, fruit smoothies and a full English breakfast, which is served all day, everyday.

After a highly successful first year of business, husband and wife owners Neville

International DJ and radio presenter Jon Besant has left his place of residence in Dubai to spend a

season in Marbella, hosting a drive-time show on local radio station Beach Grooves FM. Beach Grooves specialises in house anthems and floor fillers from the last 25 years and is set to undergo a dramatic transformation in the coming months thanks to Jon’s valuable input. The new drive-time show will air from Thursday through to Saturday from 4pm, beginning on 3rd July and will feature new live broadcasts from local DJs hailing from clubs such as Aqwa Mist and News Café, as well as luxury give-aways from the Coast’s most exclusive venues.

Alongside his radio exploits Jon will also be hosting his infamous ‘History of House’ events at Plaza Beach and Aqwa Mist, working closely with Phil Savage from Ultima Promotions.

“I actually can’t believe what has happened!” Jon tells SOCIETY Marbella, “I had always planned just the one gig in Marbella this summer, but to be offered these opportunities all in one hit, working with people like Phil Savage from Ultima Promotions who I’ve known for many years and Marc from Beach

and Lisa have recently extended the café into the next-door plot. This extra space means that the café can offer a space for private functions such as baby showers, ladies’ luncheons and

workshops such as cake decoration classes during the winter months, whilst continuing to welcome smaller groups and individuals looking for a simple eggs on toast or jacket potato lunch.

From July, Neli G’s will also be open on Friday and Saturday evenings serving food from 6 to 11pm. “The evening menu will feature a lot of rustic, share boards, very much like the style of Jamie Oliver’s restaurants in the UK,” Lisa tells our Features Editor, “food that is wholesome but, most importantly, tasty.” Dishes will include curried vegetable soup, sweet spicy and sticky chicken wings, tempura prawns with mango and pineapple salsa, beetroot cured salmon served on pumpernickel bread, chocolate brownie and meringues served with fresh berries and cream.

Whether it’s the ‘build your own breakfast’ option, which appeals to you, the play kitchenette to occupy the children or the hams, honey-roasted on site, it’s quite simple - Neli G’s is just a nice place to be.
