Introduction
This is a sequel to Report 65, with further information on languages of theNorth Omo and South Omo areas.1
During the week of September 11–18, 1994, two excursions were under-taken to the area southwest of Karatte (Konso) town. The language area of Tsamay lies west of the Xonso Wereda, the language area of Ongota is asmall spot in the Birayle Wereda, and the language area of Irbore consistsof a few settlements in the east of the central Hamer Wereda. Since the dryseason had begun, these areas were relatively easy to travel in.
The Ongota and Tsamay data were gathered in the area of an agricultural
project called the Birayle Project, and the Irbore data were gathered inIrbore town. In both cases, Oromo had to be used as intermediatelanguage.

Sketch Map I shows the administrative boundaries of the Xonso, Birayle, and Hamer Weredas, where the languages of this report are spoken.

An earlier version of this report appeared as “Second Survey of Languages of theGawwada, Tsamay and Diraasha Areas with Excursions to Birayle (Ongota) and Arbore(Irbore)” Survey of Little-known Languages of Ethiopia (S.L.L.E.) Linguistics Report 20,October 1994. Addis Ababa: Institute of Ethiopian Studies and Summer Institute of Linguistics.

Map II sketches the linguistic neighborhood of Tsamai, Ongota (Birayle),and Irbore (Arbore). From this map it is obvious that Hamer and Oromoare the languages of wider communication for both Arbore and Omgota(Birayle). This is also largely true of the Tsamay people, although they arecloser to Dobase and other forms of Gawwada.
Gathering of Sociolinguistic Information
More information on this survey has been given in the previous report(S.L.L.E. Linguistic Report no. 19). It is planned to provide furthersociolinguistic information in Report no. 25 or 26. Some basic informa-tion on sociolinguistic aspects was obtained in several interviews on thetrip of September 1994. In addition, Dinote Kusia is attempting to gatherfurther sociolinguistic information west of the Dullay river(Tullaya/Woyto) by means of additional questionnaires and with the helpof a multilingual student from the Hamer area.
The Word Lists
The word lists of Arbore, Ongota, and Tsamay were gathered in the fol-lowing way: Dinote Kusia led the interviews with representatives of therespective languages. He recommended and selected speakers for the var-
ious language sessions, and he acted as interpreter (through Oromo)where necessary, providing encouragement and explanations. RalphSiebert took care of all technical aspects of the work. He also worked out
