Solar exhibition materials box for RWIII – guideline and manual
(by Michael Götz, freelance solar trainer, and Retze Koen, GP Switzerland) Version: 28/02/14
1. Prologue: The Brazilian experience
In 2012, the RWIII was presented to the Brazilian public in three harbours with a series of open days. During the first two events, a solar cooking and energy demonstration was prepared in front of the ship (next to the waiting line for the visitors) while the same exhibition – in an extended form – was moved to the people's summit of 'Rio+20'. The result surpassed all our expectations: The solar cookers and solar 'objects' attracted a very large number of visitors and innumerous photographers and media people. The positive image of solar energy shown through examples in everybody's reach combined perfectly with the 'striking power' of the new ship and the 'demanding' messages of energy campaign. An example which definitely should be copied in other places wherever 'large public events' happen near or on the ship.

RWIII and solar cooker: a perfect match for media people.
2. The solar exhibition materials box ('solar box')
Based on the Brazilian experience and years of work in the promotion of solar energy1 as an example of the energy (r)evolution, we therefore prepared a box with solar exhibition material, keep it on the ship and readily available for the energy campaigns2 of any NRO where the ship stops and participates in a public event. The advantage of sharing the material is to reduce the organization time and cost for an event (and the danger of demonstration material arriving late because it usually has to be ordered abroad).
2a) Benefits for the campaigns
The main message of most energy related campaign is fighting environmentally unfriendly and dangerous energy sources (stop coal, stop nukes). The experience has shown that a negative
1 http://wave.greenpeace.org/system/files/solar_promotional_activities_collection1.pdf 2 Of course its use is not limited to energy campaigns. Also Forest-, Climate or Coal Campaign, volunteers coordinators, or even the ships crew are invited to use the material if it fits into their work.
message is much easier to be communicated if it is combined with a positive example ('there are friendly solutions'). Of all renewable energies, solar energy is the easiest to be demonstrated on an event or information stand, as it has an incredibly wide range of applications from very small to very large scale. It is important to realize (and communicate) that these small gadgets aren't the solution of our energy problems, but they symbolize it and proof the feasibility (which we demand on large scale from politics and economy to apply). The message of small gadgets arrives easily to the people as they are at everybody's reach. In order to organize a small solar energy demonstration, a certain number of tools and devices are needed. We have now the experience to propose the most impressive ones and advice on how to make the best use of them. Of course it would be nice that every NRO has its own set of materials, but the budget might not be available. We therefore prepared this box with proofed demonstration material and make it available to all campaigns and events along the path of RWIII. As the material is already on board, the organization of a solar energy demonstration is much easier and quicker than if all material has to be bought, send or made for an event. We not only save time, but also money and paperwork. Another important side of the medal is, that through the solar kitchen people can touch, see, smell and taste solar energy ;-).
2b) Benefits for RWIII
The main benefit for RWIII is the 'boosted media impact'. The solar cookers are a photogenic foreground for pictures of the Ship and give the 'Warriors' a sympathy bonus. It also helps the local or national campaign to present itself.
2c) Concept of use
Whenever the visit of RWIII to a country is announced, the Global Campaign Leader sends this PDF guide and manual about the box to the Ships Unit, and to the Energy Campaigner and to the Volunteers Coordinator of the local NRO. This PDF invites you to combine your event or the organization of an open boat (if this is planned) with a solar energy demonstration. In doubt, you can get help from an International Solar Team, coordinated by GP Switzerland. Contact: [email protected] or: [email protected] If a larger event is planned, a number of experienced people is available3 to help organizing the solar demonstrations and train the involved volunteers beforehand (solar trainings are available from ½ day to 3 weeks). The choice of which expert to send is influenced by geographical distance, language and available time. The local “chief “(Energy Campaigner, Volcoord or the Logistics Dept.), is responsible for receiving the box, use it in a save and responsible manner, clean the objects after use, put everything back into the box and hand it over to the crew after the event.
3. Content and size of the box
The box contains solar cookers and cooking accessories (pots, ..), a hot water collector model, solar lamps, a small solar pump and various small gadget plus some tools for experiments with children and youth (lenses, ..). The detailed list of devices can be found in the appendix.
The size is 80x60x61cm and the weight 40kg.
3 The budget of sending someone has to be found for each event separately.
The complete material. Small solar gadgets.
4. Role of the ships crew
The ships crew stores the box between uses, hands it over to the local responsible before and receives it after an event. If the crew itself organizes a public event, they are of course allowed to use the material in the same way as the responsibles from a local NRO.
5. Hints to prepare your event
The demonstration material is ready to be used. To be most interesting to the public, 3 to 4 trained volunteers4 should be taking care of the stand and the visitors (2 on rainy days when only the solar gadgets can be explained, but no cooking can be done).
From your side, you should bring a 'pavillon' tent or a large solar umbrella, a tablecloth with the colour of your campaign, GP information material, water for drinking, cooking and cleaning, sunglasses, sunlotion, hats or caps, food to cook, salt and spices, coffee, tea and sugar, a clean cloth for drying dishes, some spoons and forks for cooking5 (check the manual of the solar cookers below for more 'what you should bring'). Two or three foldable tables are helpful (one for cooking, one for the gadgets, one for the smaller cookers). According what you cook you might need cups, napkins, small plates, etc, to serve it. Try to be cooking something all the time when the sun is strong and distribute small appetizers of your cooked food to the public. You can serve espresso and tea as well.
Be ready for strong winds (typical in a harbour). Bring some clamps, strings, scotch tape, scissors, etc., to fix everything against being blown away.
Count about 2 hours to set up all material. Drink a lot of water when working in the sun.
One or two volunteers can explain the solar gadgets and cookers while the others do some cooking and talk to people. Tell the volunteers not to spend all time discussing technical details, but lead the discussion to the goals of Greenpeace and your campaigns. We are not solar material salespeople but want to proof that the solution is ready and working. Still, it is a good
4 i.e. with a good knowledge of solar energy. 5 What you find in the box: A knife, a cutting plate, a stainless steel mixing bowl, 3 tupperware containers for food, one spatula for the frying pan, 3 small glasses, 1l stainless steel Thermos, one black pot with lid, one glass lid, a frying pan.
idea to have a photocopy ready of the 'yellow pages' of the city ('solar energy') and a list of internet links.
On the first day of your event, when the ship arrives, it will take some time to get the box out of the ship (the ship has to be cleared by customs, etc.). This is quite frustrating as at this time photographers of the media are taking pictures. Have the tent, tables and maybe some additional gadgets or cookers from your office set up and ready before you get the box. Insist on getting the box out quickly
6. Hints for explaining
You might decide to expose the solar material to all visitors 'freely' or you might have groups of people passing every few minutes which need a short talk before they enter the ship. For the latter, the following 'script' has proofed useful in Mexico:
• Introduction: GP is running energy campaigns (against dirty energies), but we also show solutions, renewable energies are ready. Saving energy is the cheapest and greenest energy.
• Show solar fountain, direct use of a panel (keep panel covered until this moment) • Solar solar gadgets which use a battery to keep on running at night (lamps and phone
charger) • Talk about larger options: Show picture of solar roof. • Show remaining solar gadgets and toys (grasshopper, etc.) and explain that we show small
examples of solar devices (at everybody's reach), but we demand large scale from governments and companies.
• Solar cooking: Explain parabolic dish (with some food cooking), camping cooker for tea, small parabolic for espresso (sometimes offering on or two small cups to the group). Explain that you can make solar cookers at home (show picture).
• Explain solar hot water with small model, show picture of commercial model.
In Mexico, the speech was split: one volunteer talked about solar electricity, another about solar thermal.
7. Detailed description of all material
Foldable parabolic solar cooker COOKUP 200 by idcook.com 6,5kg
Setup: The cooker is in a large golf bag6. Follow the instructions in the bag, it might take you an hour if you do it for the first time. (Experienced people need 15 minutes). Treat the mirror sheets with care! Work in the shade..
Use: You can cook and fry on this cooker, but it will take longer than on a regular kitchen range. There is a black pot for rice, vegetables, pasta, etc. and a frying pan for eggs, fried banana, toast peanuts etc. Use the glass lid so that people can see the dish (but always use a lid, else it will take much longer!). It is much more comfortable if you use sunglasses. The cooker is not strong enough to make pop-corn.
Find the right orientation: Spot the dish towards the sun. There are tree ways to find the perfect
6 The bag and the instructions are missing.. the manual to set up the cooker is available as PDF.
orientation: a) watch the 'flames' (reflection) on the pot and direct as many of them on the pot b) check the shadow of the pot and cover the centre of the dish with it (easy to see if the reflector is a bit dusty..) c) put a stick through the hole in the plastic part on top of the dish, it must be perpendicular to the dish. Move the dish until the stick does not make any shadow any more.
In the end: Clean the mirrors only with water and a drop of dish washing liquid. Use the yellow microfibre towel. Never use anything 'scratchy' on the mirrors! Take everything apart an put it back in the golf bag.
What you need to bring: The food you want to cook, stuff to serve it (plates, napkins), dish washing liquid, water for cleaning.
Parabolic espresso maker From sunsationalcookers 2kg
Setup: The cooker is completely ready in the box. The espresso maker is in a cardboard box.
How to use it: Fill the espresso maker with coffee powder and water, place it in its holder in the centre of the reflector and orient the reflector towards the sun.
How to find the orientation: Check the bolt on one side of the dish and orient the latter until the shadow of the bolts head is as small as possible.
In the end: Clean the mirrors only with water and a drop of dish washing liquid. Use the yellow microfibre towel. Never use anything 'scratchy' on the mirrors! Clean the expresso maker.
What you have to bring: Coffee, clean water, small cups, sugar, cream, ...
Camping solar cooker Lightoven I (lightoven.de) 2 kg
Setup: The cooker is in a black 'ORTLIEB' bag. Unroll both mirror sheets. One folds lengthwise and is stabilized below it using the plastic triangle which you find inside the pot. The other one is bent and attached with 'velcro' points to the base.
How to use it: Direct the cooker towards the sun. If the spot of sunlight falling through a hole in the reflector falls on the green mark on the sticker, it is perfect. (Unluckily, it cannot be perfect if the sun is high up at the zenith in tropical zones).
Fill the cooking pot at least ¾ with a liquid (it serves for water, tea, soup, noodles, ..) and clip it into its position in the centre of the reflector. It will be boiling within ½ hour more or less. The (meat-) thermometer sticks in the transparent lid and indicates the temperature.
Be carful: Never use the pot if it is less than ¾ full with a liquid, else the plastic might melt. It only works well with liquid food.
In the end: Clean the mirrors (if needed) only with water and a drop of dish washing liquid. Use the yellow microfibre towel. Never use anything 'scratchy' on the mirrors! Clean the special cooking pot and put it back (the plastic triangle and the thermometer fit inside the pot) into the small bag. Roll the two sheets around the small bag, fix them with the strap and put everything back in the 'ORTLIEB' bag.
What you have to bring: Clean water, food you might cook (soup, tea, noodles, ..), a dish to serve it.
Solar collector model Made for Greenpeace 5 kg
Setup: The model is in a large cardboard box. Connect the 'monopod' according to the picture. Hang the bottle to it and connect the lower outlet of the bottle to the lower inlet of the solar collector. Connect the higher outlet of the solar collector to a hole in the plastic bottle. Direct the black side of the collector towards the sun.
Use: Fill everything with water and be sure to get all air bubbles out of the hoses. The 'thermosyphon' will start working and heat the water.
In the end: Disconnect the hoses and the monopod. Put everything back into the box and protect it well with 'bubble plastic'. The metal stand and the plastic bottle can be outside of the cardboard box.
What you have to bring: Water.
Water fountain OASE PALERMO 2kg
Setup: The pump and its solar panel are in the original box. Fill the red plastic 'pool' with water, place the pump inside, connect the solar panel to the pump and place the pump in the sun.
Use: Fill some more water from time to time as it spills outside the 'pool'. The people will learn quickly that the pump stops as soon as you shade the panel – one of the best educational tools we have..
In the end: Dry everything and put it back in the box. If the pump is in the centre of the box, there is exactly the space left on top of it for the panel and the box closes well.
Small PV gadgets:
They can be placed on top of the box (bring a nice tablecloth).
Solar lamp BARRACUDA
Solar lamp BEAR
Solar phone charger P1100
Setup and use: Put all solar electronic gadgets in the sun to charge the batteries. Most of them have also a handle to charge when there is no sun. (Actually, there is no need to leave them for hours and hours in the sun if no public is around. The batteries of all gadgets have a longer lifetime if they don't get hot for too long time.). Strange: The mains switch of the radio is at the bottom side, almost hidden.
In the end: put all small gadgets in the large 'tupper' box and the large lamp (BEAR) in a cardboard box.
Solar CD spinner ExSol
Wooden airplane Iws solar
Solar grasshoppers Ebay, China
Setup and use: Stick the CD on the axle of the motor which is inside a wooden block and leave the panel next to it. Connect the 'helix with solar cells' (from the 'tupper') to the wooden airplane model (outside the 'tupper'). Set a grasshopper on a serving plate or the lid of a 'tupper' box (it stars moving around).
In the end: All small gadgets go into the large 'tupper' box, the airplane outside. Disconnect the CD with care from its motor and connect its solar panel to the wooden block with a rubber band. Disconnect the helix of the airplane with care.
Set of 9 slides about solar energy7
ExSol, Greenpeace
Use: These 9 laminated A4 sheets show examples of the major categories of solar energy use: PV gadgets, independent PV system, grid-connected PV, home-made hot water system, commercial hot water system, solar cookers for education/kids, solar cookers for the family, solar cookers for 'food processing' and very large kitchens. They can be used as examples when solar energy is explained to visitors.
Energy card game ExSol
Use: Study the complete description in the separate PDF. It is not a fun game, it is a tool to discuss household electricity use and measures to reduce consumption. It can be used if you have to do a workshop with a group of people during 30 minutes. Leave it in the box if you don't 'play' it, there is no use leaving it exposed to the public.
'Solar Art'
Setup and use: You find 3 lenses and 3 sunglasses in the flat big 'tupper' box. The idea is to burn pictures, names, etc, in bits of plywood, leather, .. It can entertain a group of kids for 15 minutes. A trick: it burns much easier if the name is written first with a pencil on the plywood.
Take care: Kids have to be supervised all the time and always have to wear ultra strong sunglasses or sunglasses with extra layers of black plastic (we use 'car window darkener sheets' from a car tuning shop, there is a bit of it in the box as well).
Do not expose this material unless someone is supervising the

activity.
What you have to bring: Bits of (FSC) plywood, shingles or waste leather.
8. How to get everything back in the box
Everything fits well into the box if you start by putting the golf bag (parabolic cooker) first, then the plywood protective wall and the expresso cooker in one corner and the water collector model in the opposite corner. Then everything else in boxes or protected otherwise. Place the 'ORTLIEB' bag (camping cooker) last on top.
How to fill the box: first the 3 largest elements, then all small ones, finally the black ORTLIEB bag.
Take the box back to the Rainbow Warrior III and hand it over to the responsible person.
