aperture cresta study of self-sustaining micro-ecological systems in aspect-driven architecture

This project is centered on the idea of creating semi-subterranean microsystems, or pores, in a park-like setting to preserve cur-rent ecologic habitats, introduce new habitats, and adaptively reuse the site to make a defi nitive connection between nature and its historic heritage.

A chief focus of the project is the idea of autopoiesis, which is a form of productive landscape system capable of reproducing and maintaining itself. The idea of a self-sustaining habitat with minimal maintenance is benefi cial to most communities. A series of porous, triangular landforms with strategically placed apertures can help to create spaces that can be both occupied and educational.

There are three additive landforms (upland microforest, lowland light bridge, and iparian subterranean cavern) which rise out of the topographic landscape and become interesting nodes within the park.

CRESTS + APERTURES were created to examine conditions above and below the ground, as well as how light could fall into a space at a variety of angles. This was the key exploration in examining the idea of micro-habitats.
