    SolidWorks Electrical

    Installing SolidWorks Electrical

SolidWorks Electrical installation files are available on DVD-ROM or via download. Theyprovide two distinct software installations:

    SolidWorks Electrical

    SolidWorks Electrical 3D

This document details the installation of SolidWorks Electrical in either Standalone or

    Client Server modes.

Please note that regardless of whether a Standalone or Client Server installation type has

been selected certain processes will be the same, namely if a new SQL instance is to be

installed, or if an existing SQL server has been detected. To reduce the size of the document

links have been provided to common procedures.

    1. Configuration requirements

1.1. SQL data serverSolidWorks Electrical includes SQL Server 2008 Express in the installation; this is used to

store of the program intelligence, manufacturers parts, library symbol descriptions etc.

1.2. System requirementsWindows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 (x64 only).

Memory (minimum): 2GB of RAM, 3GB for Windows Vista.

Hard disk (minimum): 3GB free space, (for data, server or standalone) + 200MB for the

    application.

Important note for Microsoft Office 2010 users: The 64 bit version of SolidWorks

Electrical is not compatible with Microsoft Office 2010 32 bit, when installed on a 64 bitmachine.

To run SolidWorks Electrical (64 bit version) with Microsoft Office 2010 you must have the

64 bit version of Microsoft Office 2010 installed.

(Please note also: Microsoft Office is not required to run SolidWorks Electrical software.)

    1.2.1. SolidWorks Electrical 3D/Professional

In order to ensure that you have valid system requirements please refer to the page:

SolidWorks Electrical is compatible with SolidWorks version 2013 and higher.

SolidWorks Electrical 3D does not require SolidWorks Routing, (or Premium), to be

purchased separately unless you intend to design piping and tubing.

    Installation instructions

    Fundamentals

To successfully complete the installation, it is essential that the Windows session is run withfull Administratorprivileges.

The "Standalone" installation allows the user to run the software on a single workstation. The

databases will be installed locally and are not shared. The "Client Server" installation allows

users to share data (symbols, catalogues) so that several users can work on the same

    projects data set.

The client server installation must be run on the computer identified as the "Server".

When using the downloaded installation run the "Install_sw-e" file. Running the exe file will

unpack the contents and automatically launch the installation.

Note that the data should not be installed to a root directory, (C:\ for example). A unique

directory should be used to store the data, (C:\SolidWorksElectricalData for example).

Additionally the SolidWorks Electrical data should not be installed into the same

    folder as the SolidWorks data.

The Setup program automatically recognizes the operating system language and will switch

the installation interface to that language. It also detects the presence of any previously

installed SolidWorks Electrical on the computer and adapts the interface accordingly.

Agreement/RegistrationOn launching the Setup program, if no existing instance of SolidWorks Electrical is located

on your system, you will be prompted to accept to the software license agreement. Check on

the Accept check box and click the "Next" button to continue.

Enter your contact information, and serial number then click the "Next" button to continue.

Installation typesThe "Standalone" installation allows the use of the software on a single workstation. The

components necessary for the operation of the software will be installed locally on the

workstation where the installation is run.

The "Client Server" installation allows the use of the software through a company network.

The data is stored on a server, which allows several users to work simultaneously on the

same projects. Data, (libraries, projects, etc.), is installed on the server and is accessible to

all users on the network. The application is then installed on each workstation that

SolidWorks Electrical will be run on.

Select the installation mode, "Standalone" or "Client / Server".

Click the "Next" button to continue.

Standalone installationSolidWorks Electrical requires an SQL database to store data. The Setup program will

automatically detect the presence of an existing SQL on the PC and the installation interface

will automatically adapt to provide relevant install options, if an SQL server is detected the

checkbox option will be Add SolidWorks Electrical databases to an existing SQL Server; ifno SQL server is detected the option will be SQL Server Express 2008.

Client / Server installationThe client server installation must be run on the computer identified as the "Server". If this is

not the case, quit the Setup program and restart it on the "Server".

In "Client / Server" mode, the workstations will share the same data, (projects, symbols

libraries, catalogues). The application should be installed on all workstations from which

    SolidWorks Electrical will be run.

The "Server" will contain all the program data and will host the "collaborative server", this is

necessary for the exchange of data between workstations.

Note: The workstations will only be able to access the data when the collaborative server is

running. The use of a workstation as the server is prohibited.

SolidWorks Electrical Client / Server installation mode is carried out in two steps:

The first step is to install the required databases on the server. The Setup program thenextracts the files required to perform the client installation, this folder can be shared on a

network and the install data it contains can be run on the client workstation. This has the

advantage of including all the SQL and collaborative server data applied during the server

    install.

SolidWorks Electrical requires an SQL database to store data. The Setup program will

automatically detect the presence of an existing SQL server on the PC and the installation

interface will automatically adapt to provide relevant install options, if an SQL server is

detected the checkbox option will be Add SolidWorks Electrical databases to an existing

SQL Server; if no SQL server is detected the option will be SQL Server Express 2008.

    Installation without installing SQL Server:

In the case that there is no access to the SQL Server, (it is located in a datacenter for

example), the installation will be carried out as follows:

    1. The installation will be carried out from the server where the license server will be installed

    2. Do not select the Add SolidWorks Electrical databases to an existing SQL server

Installing on workstations in "Client / Server" modeThe following section covers the completion of the Client/Server installation, the Setup

program extracted the files required to perform the client installation, this folder can be

shared on a network and the install data it contains can be run on the client workstation. This

has the advantage of including all the SQL and collaborative server data applied during theserver install.

The server half of the installation contains the databases for symbols libraries, projects,

and catalogues etc. if this installation has not been carried out on the network, refer to

Installing Client / Serveradditionally the collaborative server should be installed.

Before being able to use the software it is a requirement that the license(s) be enabled. This

can be done at any time through the License Manager.

The server installation automatically generates a directory containing the files necessary for

installing the client. This directory named "00installClient", and should be shared.

Users must have the Read - Write privileges to this directory.

Frequently Asked QuestionsI cannot install SolidWorks Electrical on an existing SQL Server database.

When installing on an existing SQL Server, the Setup program requests a login and

password, verify that you have full "Administrator" rights on the SQL Server database before

    running the installation.

When the connection is established, the installation program launches a script that creates

the "TEW" user and the tables necessary for the operation of SolidWorks Electrical. The

script can be run manually if the automatic installation fails.
