Even though Somers Park tried their best (as always), the Downs managed to pull emphatic wins. We were all determined from start to finish, and our resilience shone through - just like the sunshine. We really enjoyed ourselves and learnt a great deal from the other girls’ superb skills. The teachers were very proud of our hard work, positive attitude and ability to fight to the end. Congratulations to all those that took part. Best of all everyone enjoyed themselves; we managed to score twelve goals altogether between the two year 5 and 6 teams, which was enough to do us proud. We put in a lot of effort and everyone played their own part. Despite our loss, we handled it well and even had lots of fun at the end of the match such as working on our shooting skills. We think we all played amazingly and are practising for the next event.Report by Bella and Mathilda, 6GM Easter Bingo Keep an eye out for a separate letter advertising our first ever Easter Bingo- promising a fun family evening with prizes of chocolate galore!

Dear parents and carers,

Yesterday, we celebrated World Book Day by enjoying a plethora of reading based activities, whilst also dressing up as our favourite book characters. It was great to see such strong engagement with this and the children really enjoyed showcasing their costumes during the procession at the start of the day.

Malvern Vale official opening The official opening of Malvern Vale School took place a couple of weeks ago and this week there is a little write up in the Malvern Gazette. Wheely Wheely Fun Day!

‘Watch out! Wheely, Wheely Fun Day is back on Wednesday 3rd April due to popular demand. For those new to the Somers Park community, Wheely, Wheely Fun Day is a day where children raise money for our link school, Chumbegeni, in Tanga, Tanzania, by carrying out a sponsored cycle or scooter around the playing fields and playground areas of Somers Park.

This year's sponsorship will be focused on supporting the uji (type of porridge) feeding programme for the 100 or so orphans (out of 680 pupils) attending Chumbegeni school, who rely heavily on this vitally important programme.

It can only continue through your continued generosity which has been wonderful and greatly appreciated over the years. So let's get the wheels in motion for a ‘wheely’ big sponsorship drive - or should I say cycle/scooter - on Wednesday 3rd April Wheely, Wheely Fun Day.’- Mr Dowling.

World Book Day From Year 3 ‘We had a fantastic World Book Day. The parade was awesome and then we looked at how to develop characters. We heard a really interesting piece by Nadia Shirren an author and illustrator who wrote 'Billy And The Beast'. Nadia explained that, when she creates a character, she always has a little bit of her character in it and she thinks very carefully about how it might move and talk. She set us a challenge to move and talk as

Malvern Vale Brazil Day We celebrated the Brazilian Rio Carnival on Friday 1st March. Thank you to Juliana Abrantes and José Francisco for helping us learn about The World and teaching us about your heritage and family history. ‘I liked having my mum at school. I have been to Brazil and I like having the coconut that you drink out of there.’ José Francisco ‘I liked it when José Francisco’s mum came in to teach us about Brazil and bought us a chocolate treat. (called Brigadeiro).’ Molly ‘I loved Brazil day because I love learning about things. I liked the dancing and we made flags to wave.’ Brooke ‘I liked eating cheese bread and my mum came to face paint flag colours on everyone’s face for the carnival parade.’ Olivia ‘I liked both of the foods.’ Isla ‘I liked the chocolate. It was yummy.’ Austin

our beasts which we did. It was great fun. Then, we read an excerpt of her book and wrote about why we chose the character we did along with discussing why it is always important to read and why World Book Day is so important. A great World Book Day!’ From Class 4AC

‘We wrote our own stories in the morning

with really exciting openings to hook in our

readers. Then we heard an excerpt from

Sky Song by Abi Elphinstone and used her

idea for a mystery box to pick out curious

items to help us to build a story. We plotted

out a collaborative class story and later we

decided on our own before drawing and

painting story maps to illustrate the

adventure.’

"Can I borrow that book today?!" Evie

"This is the best day. I didn't know you

could paint stories." Fionna

From Class 4NV

‘Our day started with a parade to present

our beautiful costumes. Teachers in Year 4

dressed up as characters from Who Let the

Gods Out and were retweeted by Maz

Evans, the author, who came to school

earlier in the year!

Back in our classroom, we wrote our own

short story with an exciting story opening in

our extended writing books. Before lunch,

we watched a Masterclass from the author

and illustrator Rob Biddulph and we

learned about how an image can tell a

story. We listened to the author sharing his

book called Blown Away. In the afternoon,

we created group stories through pictures

and then presented our stories to the rest

of the class. We had a great day!’

Have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes Chris Hansen

We are often asked by parents how they can help their child’s reading at home. Below is an extract from an educational guidance report which I though it may be appropriate to share whilst we have enjoyed World Book Day- they are particularly useful strategies for developing vocabulary. For those who may like to read more, it’s from this report, Preparing for Literacy: https://educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk/tools/guidance-reports/preparing-for-literacy

From the classroom- A story from Year 2 A long time ago, before I was born, tigers used to cook their dinners. Two days after I was born, I found out my uncle was coming because he had ran out of fire and if he went to the village the people would lock their doors and bolt their windows. He demanded that I go and fetch some flaming fire, so I did. On the way to the village I played with monkeys and splashed in pools and when I arrived there, I had totally forgot what my uncle wanted.

When I walked into the village, I saw an old lady and she gave me some fresh milk that was delicious. Wiping away my milky moustache I saw a boy, he was very nice and gave me some floppy fish it was also vey salty! Next, I went into a straw hut and a girl let me have a snuggly lie down on a cosy cushion. When her mother got back, she gave my fur a beautiful brush.

Soon I had had enough and jumped off I felt terribly tired, so I went into another straw hut and saw a blazing fire. I leapt on a patterned carpet and went to sleep for a long time. Waking up I saw my worried uncle and he told me I was a cat! I remembered what my uncle wanted fire!

That’s why tigers have raw food and you, maybe, live with cats. By Maeve 2AM
