What The Dog Knew By Caitlin Gallagher

In my old apartment, my dog would, on occasion, look down the hallway

towards the bedroom, from the living room, and growl, for no apparent

reason. Also on occasion, when I was sleeping in the bedroom

(she slept at the foot of the bed), I would wake

up with her staring intently at the door and

growling. She was a big girl - 140

pounds of Great Dane and slobber.

So I'm there for a couple of years of this,

thinking, ok, my dog has a good

imagination.

Wrong! One night I woke up due not to my

dog growling, but barking for all she was worth.

And not at the door... she was barking straight at

me. I opened my eyes pretty much

immediately, and there was a blur

of light, leaning right over me, very

close - certainly less than six inches

from my face. It was not really

shaped as a person - it more

resembled a person-sized version of a

colourful nebula you might see a

picture of in a science magazine. Three

dimensional and all. I immediately got the distinct

impression that this thing had been watching me sleep. For god knows how

Page 6: SONG OF THE WEEK - St Paul's International Collegeelearning.spic.nsw.edu.au/moodle/pluginfile.php/15/mod_forum/post/... · 1986-10-24 · SONG OF THE WEEK ACCORDING TO ... neighborhoods

long, and how many times before. For all the clarity of that

distinct feeling, I had no sense of what it wanted,

whether it was just me dreaming or just curiosity.

I flipped and jumped backwards to the other side

of the bed, too terrified to scream, and that blur of

light receded and disappeared over the course of

about 3 seconds. My dog was going absolutely nuts.

So, shortly thereafter, I asked the building manager if

anybody had ever died there. She investigated that, and

came back to me a couple of weeks later with a yes, a

woman had died of a drug overdose in that apartment in 1995 12 years

earlie, shortly after having her child removed from her custody because of

her addiction problems.

My dog did still growl at the hallway from time to

time, but I never saw it again. I moved out about a

year later.

I've had other encounters, but this thing was literally

inches from my face, watching me sleep. Getting shivers

now just writing about it.

In a survey of 15 students, many people expressed how things could

be changed at St Paul’s.

The questions asked were:

1. Do you like the idea of a Woolworths being put in the area next

to the school?

2. What is an activity you would like to do more of at school?

3. Do you think the school uniform should be different?

The results to question one were overwhelming, with the majority

liking the idea of a Woolworths going in to the area next to the

school. Many student liked the idea because they want to be able to

get their food without having to walk up the street to Coles! They

would like to have a shop nearby so it is easier for them to access the

things they really want (junk food).

Only one person out of the 15 surveyed, thought beyond their own

needs and disliked the idea. They thought it would be hard for the

smaller businesses in the area (like Pollies Pies) to compete against 3

major companies (Coles, IGA and now Woolworths).

The results for question two (What is an activity you would like to do

more of at school?) showed a more even distribution of responses.

The people expressed their desires for cooking, excursions, sport and

art (music, drama, photography, design) activities.

I think cooking is a great idea, especially being a multicultural school;

just imagine some of the food that could be made in that activity!

I was quite shocked with people wanting more excursions because I

thought we went on lots already. But when I asked their reasons, it

became clear that they meant camps and overseas excursions.

People wanting more sport wasn’t a surprise. The respondents wanted

a big range of sports. Personally I think we have enough sport

activities.

Page 8: SONG OF THE WEEK - St Paul's International Collegeelearning.spic.nsw.edu.au/moodle/pluginfile.php/15/mod_forum/post/... · 1986-10-24 · SONG OF THE WEEK ACCORDING TO ... neighborhoods

I understand where people are coming from when they want to see

more activities such as music, photography and design. It is obvious

our school doesn’t offer much of this yet, but I can’t wait to see

what’s to come in the future!

Question three showed quite different responses. It was surprising to

see the results for “Do you think the school uniform should be

different?” because the majority said no. I was expecting more people

to say yes; but I think when people thought about it, they realised this

school uniform is like any other school uniform – I guess its fine.

The five people who said they did want to change the uniform, said it

was because they wanted two different uniforms - one for summer

and one for winter.

This survey showed a range of different and surprising opinions from

students at the school.

Movie Review by Gloria Li

Zootopia is a 2016 American comedy-

adventure film produced by Walt Disney

Animation Studios and released by Walt

Disney Pictures. It is the 55th animated

feature in the Walt Disney Animated

Classics series. The film is directed

by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, co-

directed by Jared Bush, and features the

voices of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason

Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate,Nate Torrence, Tommy Chong, J. K.

Simmons, Octavia Spencer, Alan Tudyk, and Shakira.

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city and habitat in

neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown. It’s a melting

pot where animals from every environment live together. It is a place where no

matter what you are, you can live there. Optimistic Officer Judy Hopps is the

first rabbit police; she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of

big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Judy wants to prove herself. She jumps at the

opportunity to research a case, partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox,

Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery. At last, they solve the case and they save

Zootopia; it makes Zootopia a better and wonderful town.

MOVIE PLOT

The movie ‘Deadpool’ is a story about a guy called Wade Wilson who had lung

cancer and couldn’t be healed. He left his girlfriend Vanessa because he didn’t

want her to watch him die! A mysterious recruiter from a secret program

approached Wade, offering an experimental cure for his cancer. At first, Wade

said no but then after thinking about his girlfriend, he wanted to live on; he

decided to undergo the secret ‘procedure’. At a laboratory, he met a villain

called Francis, who used Wade for experimental purposes. However, the way

Francis did it is very cruel and really hurt Wade. When it came to the final

experiment, Francis put Wade into a giant box with no oxygen where he was

unable to live for long; his skin ripped off and he looked really ugly!!! Later

Wade used his newly discovered ability to get out of the laboratory in order to

go back to see his girlfriend. But then he decided that he was just too ugly so

he tried to figure out how to get his normal face back. He had to force Francis

to give Wade his face back again. Wade began his REVENGE JOURNEY by killing

people one by one until he got to the big boss, Francis. However, Francis was a

step in front of him and kidnapped Wade’s girlfriend to lure him and kill him.

Of course, Wade was really angry and gathered his friends to help him get his

girlfriend back. To be continued…

Going to get your L’s? Going to get your L’s can be hard, considering all the pressure of school,

friends, family and outside of school activities.

Learning to drive can be a worry for parents considering all the news about

young drivers crashing their cars – but you can ease this by starting to drive

slowly and not trying to show off in front of your friends. To get your license

you need to be 16 years of age. It is best to do your test after your birthday; if

you don’t get through, you have to wait 7 days before you can go again! In the

ACT you have to be 15 and 9 months to get for your test.

Before you go to do your test, you need to do an online safety

course; if you need help finding it, here is the link:

The test is unlimited. To be able to go for your driving test you need

to score 100%, which isn’t very hard to do.

3. Pass the Driving Test – get your provisional P1 (red) licence

4. Hold your P1 licence for at least 12 months

5. Pass the Hazard Perception Test (HPT) – get your provisional P2 (green) licence

6. Hold your P2 licence for at least two years (24 months)

Movie Reviews by Lola

‘Steve Jobs’ takes place behind the scenes,

just minutes before the launch of the

Macintosh in 1984. We see Steve Jobs

(Michael Fassbender) debating the

importance of the computer saying “Hello”.

Throughout the movie, all three product

launches were shown, including his failed

company – NeXT. Steve Jobs always wants to be in control, (in large part, an outcome of his

childhood where he knows his biological mother willingly gave him up for adoption). That

control often places him at odds with those around him, about which he doesn’t care as long

as he gets what he wants in the end!!

Michelle Darnell (Melissa McCarthy) is the “47th wealthiest

woman in the world”. In the year 1975, a five year old girl

is dropped off at an orphanage by a family that adopted her.

The nun in charge tells her there will be another family that

will want her. This happens a few more times before

Michelle decides she doesn’t need a family! A few years

later, Michelle is one of the richest women in the world with

millions of fans. Michelle soon gets arrested and thrown

into jail for insider trading and loses all of her money and

fame. Michelle then has to live with her assistant; together

they start a Girl Scout business which Michelle soon sells to

take all the money for herself. She eventually gets the

company back.

These are year 10 responses to what is important in life.

School Must be a Good Environment by Yvonne

Writers say: “The environment is a haven of mind.”

Painters say: “The environment is a source of inspiration.”

Educators say: “The environment is an invaluable asset!”

When we walk in our tree-lined campus, you will feel relaxed and happy! As we study in

elegant surroundings, you will feel comfortable.

But I found some uncivilized bad habits in school, on the stairs: bags, peels, scraps of

paper… why? Some students even see garbage on the ground, but do nothing. But we must

do the little things. Students, let us act together to keep our campus beautiful!

Are We Losing Our Health? by Sorin

What is the most important thing in our life? Families? Friends? Or money? The answer is

none. There is a more important thing, and without it you can’t do anything.

I think it is health. However, many people are losing it and they don’t even realize it. These

are the people who smoke.

In China, many teenagers start to smoke, but it’s a very bad habit that’s hard to quit

(especially when you are under eighteen). According to the research, people who are under

eighteen find it harder to quit than adults. Every year about 5 million teenagers are going to

start smoking – that is terrible!!

How can we get healthier? We must get a better food balance and eat more vegetables and

fruits, and eat less meat. We must not forget to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner and not

eat anything after 10pm. Also we must take plenty of exercise. This way we can basically

keep our health.

When we become healthier, it becomes a personal strength. We need do more exercise,

and keep doing it every day. When we become stronger we might not get sick and that

would be great!

That is why we must keep our health every day!
