GREETINGS

Welcome to our Fall 2021 Arts and Culture Catalog! As kids start school and families return to their year-round routines, we are excited to offer lots of opportunities to build art into your week. From weekend workshops to after-school programs, evening classes and weekday happy hours, we hope you’ll find something that strikes your fancy – and entices you to stretch your creative muscles. At the Community Center, Fall is also a time for community celebration, and for honoring shared traditions. Join us throughout the month of October to explore the beautiful art and culture of Día de los Muertos, a time-honored celebration of loved ones who have passed, with deep roots in Mexican and Mexican-American communities. Then, mark the start of the December holiday season with us at our 3-day Winter Market, which will include our 10th annual Fine Craft and Art Sale as well as lots of fun activities for visitors of all ages. Both celebrations offer an opportunity to come together and connect with neighbors, near and far, through the power of creativity and arts. And that, ultimately, is what our work at the Community Center is all about. We hope to see you this Fall, whether on our campus or out in the community, and we look forward to cultivating a vibrant, creative community with you. In gratitude,

Every six months, an artist comes to live and work at Sonoma Community Center to take their pursuit of ceramics to the next level. Through immersion and community outreach, the resident artist gains technical training, teaching experience, and the opportunity to have a solo show in Gallery 212. Learn more here.

This semester, we welcome Gabriella “Gabo” Martinez as our new Artist in Residence. Gabo will be helping run the kilns, teach, and make a new body of work that will be shown in Gallery 212 in December. Gabo was born in Tarimoro, Guanajuato, Mexico and is inspired by her indigenous Mexican culture and her research into Native American visual traditions. Gabo works with terracotta clay, sgraffito technique, and vibrantly colored slips. Her pieces recall imagery of the Mexican towns where she spent her summers, and evoke the artist’s ongoing reconciliation of civilizations, languages, and generations.
