Dear Member
What a fantastic run of shows we have had so far, with wonderful lines of
South Devons demonstrating great strength and breed character!
A breed championship hat trick was achieved by Laity Farms against tough
competition – firstly at Devon County, then in the National Show at the Royal
Bath & West, and thirdly at the Royal Cornwall Show – with Z Polkinghorne
Indiana. To top that, it was a great delight to see Oliver Laity win his age
section of the Society’s Young Handler Competition in the National Show, to
then go on to win the overall Young Handlers section at the Royal Cornwall!
Following on from last year’s interbreed successes, more excitement was to be
had at the Royal Cornwall when the South Devon pair came in as Reserve in the
Burke Trophy! This is a highly commendable achievement, rarely to be had – and
is for the second year running for the breed, this time with different animals
from different breeders.
All exhibitors are to be congratulated in the time and effort taken to bring
such great cattle to shows, promoting not only their own herds but also the
breed which is of benefit to all members. Results of major shows that have
been held to date are inside.
2
The 6th National Show was another great success, with 95 cattle exhibited, and
plenty of spectators. Photographs are on the website, and a report follows
below. Planning for next year’s Show will start very soon, so no let-up!
Unfortunately we had to cancel the recently arranged Poll Group Meeting at
Arncliffe Farms, Northallerton, but the evening EBLEX meeting went ahead
with some South Devon supporters in attendance, and proved to be an excellent
opportunity to demonstrate the performance, docility, and polling ability of
South Devon cattle. The meeting gave a resume of the findings of a heifer
nutrition project based on three separate holdings, focussing on selecting and
managers for calving a t 2 years of age.
The breed’s Performance Championships will take place in a month’s time at the
Livestock Event, NEC, Birmingham, and a catalogue will be put together shortly.
Please ask if you would like a copy, and download your free ticket details of
which were enclosed with the last newsletter to come and support our
exhibitors.
A good sale was held at Exeter recently on behalf of the South Devon Cattle
Breeders Club, with a total clearance – the second in the same month!
At last there are signs of the beef price slide coming to an end. The fall has
taken everyone by surprise (but perhaps not retailers and processors), but
hopefully now the much talked about shortage of supply will kick in and help
producers gain a margin.
Thank you to all of you who have generously sponsored the Race for Life, in aid
of Cancer Research UK. Liz and I, and my daughter Emily will be taking part at
the Westpoint run in July, and hoping to raise close on £1000 – with your help!
With my best wishes
Caroline

THE 6TH NATIONAL SHOW OF SOUTH DEVONS The Royal Bath & West, 27th-30th May
After the end of nearly ten months’ work, it was a real delight to see the
unfurling of the National Show, with cattle coming from far and wide to
compete for the prestigious awards passed on from the Royal Show.
Before the Show officially opened, members and guests were treated to a
lovely barbecue at Higher Farm, Shepton Montague, by very kind invitation of
Robert and Christina Dimond. Assistant chef and helpers were Jan & Angela
Coward, and Mark & Felicity Stanley-Smith. It was a beautiful sunny evening
and we sat in the garden against a backdrop of Robert’s fine looking South
Devon cattle. A perfect way to start the Show!
***
When we first mooted the idea of a National back in 2009, we did not foresee
just how successful it would become; each Show has been unique, with a
different venue each year, and always an excellent display of show cattle in
terms of both quality and numbers. It has proved an excellent way to promote
ourselves, and to give opportunities around the country for breeders to exhibit
at this top Show without always having to travel long distances. It has also
raised the standard to a new level each time, with line-ups of even size, shape,
and strength.
Results of the judging are given below. Society Chairman Mark Thomas, was
kind enough to judge the classes, and also the Young Handler Competition, for
which we are most grateful. Our President Diana Rusher was at the ringside to
help present rosettes, along with a number of our sponsors. There were 25
exhibitors, and all of whom are to be congratulated and thanked:
A & C Farms (Rutland); Acorn Farms (Devon) R W & S M Bostelmann (Staffs); O Brewin (Leics); A Brookes (Cornwall)
M E & T E Broome (Leics); Mr & Mrs R Clemens (Cornwall) R J Dimond (Somerset); P R Eustice (Cornwall); R A Ford (Leics)
M Giles (Somerset); W P & S L Harper (Devon); R V Hartshorn (Shropshire) Mr & Mrs J A Hopkins (Somerset); Laity Farms (Cornwall)

Female Champion was the winner of the cow class owned and exhibited by A & C
Farms, and bred by Mike & Sarah Kettlewell – Upper Norton Nazerene, a four
year old cow by Welland Valley Hanbury 11. Reserve Female was a home-bred
heifer from A & C Farms, AI Langham’s Cornflake, a two-year old heifer by AI
X Mutterton Ashton Bitter (former National Show breed champion).
Male Champion was Z Polkinghorne Indiana bred and shown by Laity Farms. This
five year old bull by Woodhayes Illya 2 is homozygous polled, and we can look
forward to seeing more of his progeny follow him into the show and sale rings.
Another polled bull, Z Welland Valley Trident 3, top price at Bristol in 2013 and
shown by Bill & Suzanne Harper was Reserve Male Champion.
After due consideration and a build-up of quiet excitement around the ring, it
was Indiana that Mark Thomas tapped out as his overall champion.
In the Interbreed classes, Laity Farms’ Z Polkinghorne Indiana was narrowly
beaten into Reserve place in the overall Supreme Championship by a smart
Murray Grey cow – but a very commendable result for the South Devons
nonetheless. Malcolm Broome achieved success with his yearling Welland Valley
Claudia 12, taking Best Native Heifer.
***
The AWARDS DINNER was held in the evening and members and guests
enjoyed very tender and tasty South Devon beef generously provided by Johnny
and Sam Ward from Mells Park, followed by strawberries, meringues and cream
– all delicious! Diana Rusher kindly presented the Cups and Trophies to the
show winners and thanked all who had helped put the Show together.
***
Grand Parades were held on the second and third days, and a representation of
South Devon exhibits headed by the breed champion led the main group of
cattle – what a proud sight!
Our own dedicated South Devon parade took place on the third morning in the
cattle rings, and followed a particularly violent down-pour of rain which might
have deterred other breeds from coming out! We filled the rings with 40
cattle, parading the bulls first, then the cows and heifers before lining them up
to give the many spectators the chance to enjoy a most impressive sight of
powerful, quiet red cattle displayed in front of them. Thank you to all who took
part – it was worth it!

Whilst it was disappointing not to have enough entries to be able to stage the
main part of the Young Handler Competition - the younger section was well
supported with seven 11-15 year olds, and they were put through their paces by
Mark Thomas, facing up to the challenges in a highly professional and competent
manner. Well done to all the participants, who each receive some merchandise
including a personalised polo shirt.

A message from Jessica Merrifield (Debbie’s daughter):

encouraged me with my first real show experience, can I say a VERY BIG
THANK YOU. It made my show very special indeed. Best wishes, Jess

BREEDPLAN ‘INTERNET SOLUTIONS’
Following a visit to the office by Murray Scholz from ABRI last month, there
are a few things you might like to use to better navigate ‘Internet Solutions’
which is the Breedplan database part of our website.
- In the ‘animal search’ function you can now select for myostatin status based
on the variant (either nt821 or F94L) as well as the number. So the ‘Select
If’ drop-down menu includes a choice of ‘0’; ‘1’ nt821; ‘1’ F94L; ‘2’ nt821; or ‘2’
F94L
- In the top menu the ‘Semen Catalogue’ option is fully functional, and you can
see all the AI bulls that are currently published in our Semen List, together
with pedigrees and EBVs which are updated each month. However, if you
would like to receive a paper copy please just ask
- If you submit registrations or performance records on-line please note that
you do not need to close a batch when you finish a logged-in session. Just go
back to it when you next log in, and keep on adding. It is easier for us to
administer one bigger batch, than several smaller ones!
- If you have not yet used the Mating Predictor facility but would, for
example, like to see how a sale catalogued or AI bull would perform with your
females, then just log on using your ID and password (ask the office to set
you up if you don’t already have same). Select Mating Predictor from the top
menu, then enter the ID of the bull under Sire Identifier. Make sure the
Dam Status is marked ‘active’ and that you also click on ‘my ownership’
against Dam Ownership Selection. Then just click search, and the following
page/s will show you the likely EBV outcome of matings using this bull with
your dams, and the percentage of inbreeding coefficient. You can refine the
search on the first page as you choose.

AND FINALLY … (Apologies to all men, I couldn’t resist this one!!)
When Dan found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly father
died, he decided he needed a woman to enjoy it with.
So one evening he went to a singles bar where he spotted the most beautiful
woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away.
"I may look like just an ordinary man," he said as he walked up to her, "but in just
a week or two, my father will die, and I'll inherit 20 million dollars."
Impressed, the woman went home with him that evening and, three days later,
she became his stepmother.
Women are just so much smarter than men.
