The goal of the dispersion phase in the paint making process is to mechanically separate pigment particles by high shear and stabilize these pigment particles for optimum performance. Properly dispersing and stabilizing pigment particles will help improve the light scattering for better hide and a tighter, more durable coating. If not properly stabilized, the pigment particles in dispersion will re-agglomerate over time and thus provide lower gloss, poor hiding and reduced durability.

Dispersant

OROTAN™ Dispersants keep particles separated over time.

The mechanical breakup and separation (deagglomeration) of pigment clusters

to isolated primary particles.

Dispersant molecules play an active role in this phase. The role of a dispersant molecule is to prevent re-agglomeration of dispersed pigment particles over time; this is key to developing a high-performance, durable coating for any surface you want to protect.

The OROTAN™ Dispersants family includes both the polyacid homopolymer and polyacid copolymer types.

As-supplied pigment is agglomerated.

Grinding reduces agglomeration.

Surfactant Recommendation

Application Benefit

SurfactantDow surfactants include some of the most familiar anionic and nonionic products in the industry, known worldwide for excellent emulsification and dispersion. They are used by formulators of paints and coatings for pigment wetting, film leveling and pigment stabilization.

Exterior Applications

Over the years, Dow scientists have compiled extensive data from Dow exposure sites confirming the benefits of using ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer in exterior coatings. In particular improved resistance to dirt pick up, reduction of mould and algae growth and superior color retention are the main benefits observed on numerous wood or masonry exterior coatings containing ROPAQUE Opaque Polymer.

Interior Applications

The lower levels of TiO2 and extender in paints containing ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer provide less loose particles available to abrade the paint film. The lower binder demand of ROPAQUE Opaque Polymer vs. TiO2 particles also leads to enhanced mechanical properties including scrub resistance. The overall effect improves washability.

• Increases titanium dioxide (TiO2) efficiency through spacing and offers increased light scattering.• Very low binder demand due to spherical shape with low surface area.• Effective cost / performance balance.• Improved dirt pick-up resistance in exterior coatings.• Improved block resistance for interior coatings

Opaque PolymerROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer is an advanced polymeric opacifier engineered to improve the efficiency of TiO2. It offers paint application and performance improvements, lowers the consumption of TiO2 and reduces the cost of all types of water based paints.

Consistent Product Quality

Dow’s long experience with opaque polymer technology has enabled the development of robust production processes leading to consistent product quality. The particle size distribution for instance is key, and a narrow distribution leads to maximum light scattering efficiency.

1 Manufactured without the use of Alkyl Phenyl Ethoxylate (APEO) surfactants.2 Formaldehyde is a ubiquitous material in our environment. Currently there is no accepted regulatory or industry

definition of “Formaldehyde-Free.” Therefore, we purposely refrain from using the term “Formaldehyde-Free.” However, for the products, we do not intentionally add Formaldehyde or Formaldehyde generators.

3 Manufactured without the use of aqueous ammonia.
