I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year and a very enjoyable holiday with your families. A special welcome also to our new Kindergarten students and their families who embarked on their educational journey yesterday. All students have been allocated to their classes for this year. Please contact me if you have any concerns. We welcome the following new teachers to our staff: Mrs McGrath Year 3, Mrs Shorrock Year 2, Mrs Bishop Kindergarten, Mrs Pullen who is teaching Kindergarten for Term 1 while Miss McLennan is on leave. We also welcome Mrs Warren who is working on the Primary Campus as a Student Learning Support Office (SLSO). We have listed the staffing organisation on the next page. We are all looking forward to a fantastic 2018 following on from our excellent year in 2017. Again this year we are able to offer extra support staff across both campuses which will assist our students reaching their individual educational outcomes and support our staff with the implementation of quality teaching in every classroom in our school. Our outstanding Facebook page will again be available for our school community to access and celebrate the many wonderful achievements of our staff, students and community throughout the year. At the end of last year we received a very positive email from the ‘Got It Team’ on the success of this excellent program at our school. The Got It Team have asked if they can use our school as a model for other schools who are now accessing this program. Below is a snapshot of the email I received. “The dedication, passion for learning and having the children’s best interests always at the forefront made working at SGPS a very enjoyable experience. We had fantastic outcomes and feedback for the Program to develop further.” -An optimum learning and nurturing environment for both students and staff. i.e. school playground was always happy, playful place with lots of activities. -SGPS observed to manage challenging behaviours to a very high standard with individual child plans and dedication form the school team to collaboratively improve the children’s outcomes. To work hard to reduce segregation of children and suspension. -School culture of high commitment to team work and capacity building of staff. -Culture of high quality communication with other agencies -Principal and school observed to offer equal opportunities to all children, all children are highly valued and their strengths developed. -Fantastic office administration staff who were very helpful and made us always feel welcome. -A welcoming staff room” Thankyou to everyone involved in this program. Tomorrow we are holding our House Captain elections. Good luck to our students who are going to nominate for these positions.

Principal’s Report

Welcome back to our school community and a special welcome to our new families to our excellent school. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year and a very enjoyable holiday with your families. A special welcome also to our new Kindergarten students and their families who embarked on their educational journey yesterday.

We have listed the staffing organisation on the next page.

We are all looking forward to a fantastic 2018 following on from our excellent year in 2017. Again this year we are able to offer extra support staff across both campuses

which will assist our students reaching their individual educational outcomes and support our staff with the implementation of quality teaching in every classroom in our school. Swimming Carnival On Monday 12th February our Primary students and students turning 8 years from the Infants campus (who are capable swimmers) will be participating in the Swimming Carnival at the Grafton pool. All Primary students are required to attend and our carnival will offer formal swimming races, novelty races and activities for non-competitive swimmers. A permission note has been sent home today and needs to be returned with the $6.50 to classroom teachers. We are looking forward to a fantastic day. Our thanks to Mr Newman for organising this carnival. Our school will be at the forefront of many innovations again this year. One of these is our implementation for our parents of the SKOOLBAG App. This App will improve communication between home and school and make contact much more accessible for our parents. We will be informing parents over the next couple of weeks on how to access and use this fantastic new resource. Going home arrangements Infants students have received a note asking parents for going home arrangements. Just a reminder to our parents on both campuses to please send a written note if your child’s going home arrangements change. Last minute changes can be advised by a phone call to the office. Infants students leaving by the back gate (Kelly Street) must wait inside the gate to be collected by a parent/carer or older sibling – they cannot leave by themselves. Primary students will wait with the teacher on duty at either the Bent Street or Hall gate. While we always have staff supervising students waiting to be collected we appreciate parents being prompt when collecting students at 2.55pm. Please contact the school if you have any concerns as we encourage our parents to communicate on a regular basis and my door is always open if required. Have a great week Mr Peter Hickey - Principal

Cubs and Lions Band It is so exciting to begin the year with the joy of music. The band program at SGPS begins with rehearsals for Lion’s band in Week 3. We have an excellent partnership with the Clarence Valley Conservatorium who provide expert tuition in flute, clarinet, saxophone, percussion, brass and bass guitar. Thank you to all of the families who have paid their ‘one off’ band fees for the year. Instruments will continue to be allocated to students who have paid this week. There are spaces available for students wishing to learn the guitar. Please see Ms Grayndler or the office for an application form. Watch this space for more news about The Lions and Cubs progress and upcoming events. Ms Grayndler - Band Co-ordinator Clarence Valley Conservatorium Single Lessons and Ensembles are up and running at the Clarence Valley Conservatorium for 2018. Our tutors are experienced educators and performers on many instruments, we also has a growing Drama studio. We work with beginners, enthusiasts of all ages and those embarking on a professional career. Past students include professional musicians and actors performing around Australia and overseas. Please visit our website www.cvcon.com.au, like us on Facebook or ring 6643 3555 during office hours for more information on enrolling in one or more of our programs.
