O ver the last few years, coloring books have become highly popular, as people

of all ages have re-discovered the joys and meditative qualities of coloring. It is

also a great way to show off your creative impulses!

Promoting creativity is what South Orange Public Library is all about. When

we were putting together our second annual Makers Month this March, we

knew we wanted to host a coloring event. Then we figured: Rather than use a

book of someone else’s illustrations, what better way to tap into the creativity

and talent in our community than to ask our patrons (and staff) to contribute

the artwork?

So what you hold in your hands is the first South Orange Public Library

Coloring Book. We are thrilled about the variety of illustrations we received

and in what directions our contributors went in – from faithful replicas of the

library to striking images of nature…and plenty of dragons!

We are also celebrating 150 years of library service in South Orange this year,

and throughout this coloring book you will see fun facts about SOPL.

Thanks to everyone who donated their time and creativity with a picture so

everyone who picks up this coloring book will have a fun time.

Celebrating 150+ years of library service in South Orange is looking back and engaging in the present – but is also about building for the future…

Q. How is our library relevant? What is its place in the community?

A. Five core library services:

1. COMMUNITY COMMONS

The library will be an anchor for meeting & gathering. Inviting, neutral, public space

has the capacity to inspire all generations, individuals, and groups: that space will

heighten the nature of civil discourse and engagement within the community.

2. COMMUNITY RESOURCE

The library will provide, programming, service opportunities, & resources for

community members at various life stages. The community will be enhanced

and enriched by the library’s resources, spaces, and programs which support

community organizations, local businesses, and lifelong learners - from the

earliest learners, to academic students, to community members pursuing

individual interests & aspirations.3. CENTER FOR CREATIVITY

The library will provide resources & spaces which encourage & support creative endeavors.

The cultural and artistic richness of the community will grow in depth and range through

opportunities for individual and collaborative exploration and communication; the currency

of invention & imagination will be freely and readily available at the library.

4. INFORMATION FLUENCY

The library will support all kinds of literacy & assure access to evolving forms of information &

diverse materials. The community will be enriched with access to a broad range of resources

spanning health, e-government, business, and recreational & cultural topics and issues.

Evolving technologies & shared expertise will extend value & timeliness to the community.

5. LOCAL HISTORY

The library will provide & nourish a unique collection

of materials and resources that chronicle the life,

culture, & times of South Orange and environs.

The first dedicated library building, now the Connett Memorial Library, opened in 1896.

In spring 2013, the library began

an afterschool Minecraft program.

SOPL staff ended up writing a

short manual for other libraries

with interest in setting up a

similarly collaborative program.

And, on alternate Mondays, a good

time continues to be had by all.

In 1968, the current library building opened to the public.

South Orange Public Library provides access to 80,518 print books

in the library, 14,766 e-books for download, and a

nearly unlimited number of books available through

interlibrary loan from other NJ – and beyond – libraries.

In 2015, on average, more than 500 people used the library

EVERY DAY.

In 1894, South Orange Library received its first catalogue-case.

The shelf-list (arrangement by subjects) was completed;

3,000 author and title cards were written.
