The New Year. A Fresh Start.A New Beginning.

For me, the beginning of the New Year sig-nifies a time for hope, inspiring you to makechanges or do things differently. It can be an ex-citing time, filled with enthusiasm and anticipa-tion, as we think about our potential for theupcoming year. It is a time of reflection – honor-ing what has happened, what is currently hap-pening, and what is yet to come.

Celebrating milestones in our life such as theNew Year allows us to contemplate our lives in away we often don’t do. Constantly movingthrough life on autopilot, it is easy to get caughtin the daily grind, dragging along week by weekwith our routines and schedules. The New Yearis a break in this pattern. It is both an ending anda beginning. It is an opportunity to stop, reflect, and start again.

As we move into this next chapter of life, itis important to think about what we accom-plished in 2015. A lot can happen in the span ofa year, and I'm sure for most of us 2015 wasfilled with many wonderful experiences, and

challenging ones as well.Take a moment to look back upon the beau-

tiful memories you created this past year. I'm sureif you think about it, there were many. Too often, memories are forgotten and as we get caught upin our routines we lose sight of what is truly im-portant to us and forget about just how lucky weare.

Also – just as important – take some timeto reflect on what didn't go so well, as it is onlyby acknowledging these hardships that we areable to let go of the past and move forward intothe future. The challenges we have faced give usstrength and courage, and in some way or an-other have helped shape us into who we aretoday.

As we look towards the future, embrace itwith an open heart. Honor your past, cherish thebeautiful memories, and be willing to let thechallenging times go. In the words of Brad Pais-ley, “Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365page book. Write a good one!”

Arguably one of the most signifi-cant of the five senses, vision is oftensomething we take for granted, that is,until our eyes no longer work the waythey used to.

As we get older, naturally ourbody begins to age; the eyes are no ex-ception. At first, impairment in visionmight not seem so noticeable, but astime progresses slowly your vision de-teriorates until one day you find your-self waking up and when you openyour eyes it’s as if you are underwater;everything is blurry and you canbarely see your own reflection.

Vision impairment greatly affectsone’s quality of life and ability to enjoythe beauty around us – but it doesn’thave to!

At Newsom Eye, they want youto know that you are not alone. Mil-lions of others suffer from the samedebilitating effects of vision impair-ment. But, there is hope! You canhave NEWsom EYES! Newsom Eyeoffers Cataract, LASIK and GlaucomaSurgery. The Newsom Eye team, ledby world-renowned surgeon T.Hunter Newsom, MD utilizes themost advanced medical laser technol-ogy in the world; even better, theyhave an office located right here inSouth Tampa!

Following in the footsteps of hisfather, who is also an ophthalmologist,Dr. Newsom has had a passion for thefield for as long as he can remember.“I have always had an interest in oph-

thalmology,” says Dr. Newsom. “I’vealways liked working with my hands.Even if I won the lottery and neverhad to work again I would still dowhat I do. I love what I do and thegratification from giving people theirvision back is something I don’t wantto live without. It’s really a unique, special thing!”

Starting with a staff of five, withina year of opening his first location inSebring, Florida in 2001, Dr. New-som, had already began building hisown surgery center as a way to imple-ment the new technology in Cataractand LASIK surgery that he, himself, had helped to develop. Opening hisown surgery center not only allowedhim to help more people, it also gavehim the platform to do more research, which in turn caused his practice togrow at a substantial rate; he recentlypassed a significant milestone – over100,000 patients since opening hispractice 14 years ago!

Dr. Newsom says, “When I firstopened my practice, it started off as avery intimate family business. My chil-dren would often come to work withme; we had a room above the officewhere they would play during the day.Although we have expanded we arestill a family practice.” And, as such, they still abide by the same standardsand dedication to quality customerservice that was implemented day one.“We are really dedicated to makingour patients feel comfortable,” addsDr. Newsom. “The more comfortablethey are, the easier my job is.”

Hoping to one day continue thefamily legacy, Dr. Newsom’s oldestdaughter Madison, already knowswhat she wants to do when she growsup – she wants to be just like her dad!During the summer, and whenevershe has the free time, she can be foundalongside her dad shadowing him andhelping whenever possible. Dr. New-som’s wife, Stacy is also very involvedin the business and has been by herhusband’s side from the very begin-ning.

When looking for an eye sur-geon, experience and accreditationsare everything, so if you want the bestof the best, look no further than New-som Eye! Developing much of thetechnology that is used in his practice,Dr. Newsom truly is a leader in thefield and is among the best and bright-est in the world.

His noteworthy accomplish-ments include:

• Inventor of the Newsom Blade-less Laser Cataract Surgery Technique, and adapting the IntraLase Femtosec-ond Laser for use in Cataract Surgery.

• Principal Investor for the FDAstudy of lenses implanted after cataractor lens replacement surgery.

-Segmented Bifocal IOL-Light Adjustable Lens-Softec HD IOL for Blended vi-

sion•First surgeon in the world to im-

plant Aphakic Artisan™ intraocularlenses in a patient with megalocornea.

• First surgeon in the US to im-plant FDA approved bilateral AphakicArtisan™ intraocular lenses.

•One of only two surgeons na-tionally recognized for “Surgical Ex-cellence” in cataract and implantsurgery awarded by the American Col-lege of Eye Surgeons.

• One of the first surgeons in theUS to surgically implant both theVisian™ and Verisyse™ phakic ion-traocular contact lenses.

There are many things to con-sider when choosing an ophthalmolo-gist. In addition to accreditations andexperience– which Dr. Newsom clearlyhas – technology is another importantaspect. At Newsom Eye, Dr. Newsomand his colleagues use only the mostcutting edge and newest laser technol-ogy available, allowing them to pro-vide the most outstanding surgicalresults. It is also important to notethat their surgical center is AAAHCapproved, which is significant in that itshows their continued dedication tomaintaining the highest national stan-dard in sterility and safety.

LASIK patient Jennifer Miller,MD writes, “As a physician, I dependon seeing clearly every day to effec-tively perform my job. For years I havebeen afraid to trust anyone with thesurgical correction of my eyes. When Ilearned about Dr. Newsom and hisstate-of-the-art facility and latest tech-nology, I knew at last I had foundsomeone I could entrust with my vi-sion. The entire experience was posi-tive – from the pre-operative exam, the day of procedure, and the post-op-erative follow up. By the next day, Iwas restored to perfect vision and feltgreat. I put my confidence in the best

By Matt SelbyLast week I had the pleasure of

meeting with local author Betsy Mac-Donald to talk about her new book,The Vulnerable. A true story, The Vul-nerable is an intriguing book aboutBetsy’s autistic brother Michael, whosuffers from Asperger’s and her jour-ney to reconnect with her family andhelp Michael escape a tortuous rela-tionship with a couple that was sup-posedly caring for him; when all thewhile, they were taking advantage ofhim, abusing him, and even poisoninghim. They were slowly attempting tomurder him and make it look like anaccident just to gain his inheritance.

The Vulnerable has all the mak-ings of a Hollywood thriller, but like Isaid, this is unfortunately a non-fic-tion tale. Speaking of Hollywood,Betsy says she is meeting with somemovie producers that sought her outafter reading The Vulnerable, so ascreenplay may very well be next.

During our interview Betsy de-scribed to me some of the horriblethings that these people did to herbrother; it made my stomach flip flop.I can’t imagine how anyone could livewith himself or herself after commit-ting such heinous acts; manipulatingan autistic person for their own per-sonal gain. It’s absolutely disgusting,

Local Author Publishes The Vulnerable,an Intriguing Non-Fiction Novel About

Saving Her Brother From True Evil

and when I asked Betsy what her ulti-mate goal was in telling her story shereplied, “I just want to make peopleaware of what can happen to the oneswe love, especially those who may be-come vulnerable without the rightpeople in their lives. I want to helppeople see that they need to make aplan, especially if they have a child ora loved one with autism. I want peo-ple to really think about what couldhappen to that person if they weren’taround, that way they can prepare andhopefully prevent something terriblefrom happening, because once it’s toolate there might not be anyonearound to protect them.”

I don’t want to give too much ofthe book away, but I am happy to re-port that Betsy has saved Michael andhe currently lives with Betsy and herhusband locally. I personally have aclose friend, whom I’ve known since

high school, who has Asperger’s sothis story really hits home for me.Betsy says, “Knowledge is power. It ismy wish that by hearing our story, maybe one person’s life can besaved!”

Betsy MacDonald’s book TheVulnerable is for sale at Amazon.com.Betsy is a psychiatric R.N. holding po-sitions as a Mental Health Director, where she lectures the public andhealth agencies. She also served asDirector of Nursing at a hospital andhas counseled and evaluated youth inschool settings. Betsy MacDonald is anationally published author with non-fiction cover stories. This true mysteryhas clairvoyance, hauntings, and gut-wrenching emotion, as it takes thereader on a journey to crack a family’scode of silence.

They haveshown unending patience with bothan infant who cries frequently and anenergetic two-year-old boy – not tomention all of the students they workwith each day. They have an unshak-able faith in God, which is how they

get their strength each day. Most recently, Bennett was

found to have moderate hearing lossin his right ear and profound hearingloss in his left ear. His hearing losswill require assistive hearing devicesfor both ears – which insurance doesnot cover. These are just some of thedifficulties children with 18q Dele-tion Syndrome tend to face, alongwith a possibility of autism and otherdevelopmental delays. With each spe-cialist visit comes fifty-dollar co-payplus additional, medical costs.

of the worry off of their shoulders byproviding them with money for Ben-nett’s hearing devices, as well as all ofhis other current and future medicalcosts.
